FYI technically both the 36V and 40V batteries are exactly the same other than the labelling. 40V is a marketing thing. It’s often done by many cordless tool manufacturers to just beat the opposition in voltage or to round the voltage up to an even number. In this case it’s a measurement of the battery when it is fully charged and measured at its peak voltage for a split second when the tool it’s powering is first turned on before dropping to around 36V. The 36V packs do exactly the same. So you are safe to use either pack in your tools.
Very interesting video. I had a Greekwork's 40 volt battery that went dead and refused to charge. Instead of looking for a reset option, I removed the actual cells from the board. Not a good idea. Now I have great battery cells, but a really damaged controller board that needs replaced. I will certainly look for a reset for any future battery problems... Thanks!
Thank you very much for saving me the cost of a new battery. Maybe you should suggest to Ryobi that they put a reset button on the outside of the battery

I've been lucky, equivalent ones last at least 80% of the time when compared to original. Just a rough estimate - I have 4 areas that I mow my lawns...and generally it takes 2 x batteries...whether is original or equivalent. Based on how lazy I have been, letting it grow too much. I would keep away from any "used" battery. It cost about Au$90 for the equivalent Ryobi original for Au$260...so, even if it's 50% as good, I am ahead. I recently ordered an 8Ah 36V at $95..that will be interesting to see if it does all 4 areas of my lawn(grass)...

If you get a solid orange test light stick the battery in the freezer for 5 to 10 minutes and take it out and try to put it back on the charger. It’s apparently very sensitive to temperature as soon as it runs down.

I just discovered your channel - excellent video and you've got a new subscriber! I didn't catch the name of the screwdriver tool that you used to open the battery though...
Thank you! I have the 40volt on my Ryobi chain saw and have been very happy with it. It sat in my shop for a couple of months and the battery showed two lights when I was ready to use it again. Then it said defective "red/green" blink. After that on the charger then all four lights blinked. Trying what you showed now. No luck it flashed the lights and I then put it on the charger with two lights showing. It still shows defective. I tried again and held the reset for a few seconds and all four leds blinked quickly for a few times. The the two leds showed charge level. Put it back on the charger and still shows defective. Guess I'll try resetting it and putting it on the saw with the two lights and see what it does. Kind of frustrated right now. We had bad weather and I have lots of tree limbs to clear. I'll let you know what happens latter.
I also have the 40v chainsaw,,, it has the feature that me and the battery are out of energy at the same time,, and both needs recharging.. This fix,, has helped a lot of people,, you might need to messura all the cells to make sure all is good... first.
Have you really been using a weed whacker to clear all of your land? Good on you. That's a good amount of work. Guess it might be too high for like a law mower. Need one of those rideable ones :p
@@MyPlayHouse it didn’t work out. I followed every step, but I am not getting the one-time light blink like in your video. Nothing happens, in fact. I do get four light flashes when I press the battery test button. Any other ideas? Thanks!
Great video. I have the same problem. Only used it about ten times then I hired a gardener, but he moved and when I pulled my weed walker out the box again it gave me the error. I may be still under warranty but if not I guess I’ll have to try this. How is the battery lasting so far since the video?
Great video and explanation! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 did the battery ever got into limp mode again after this? I have 4 batteries that all have this right now. Gonna go home and try. Thanks
I will try it out. Harbor Freight in the US has tamper proof torx allens in a set for $7. Even if is doesn't work these screws are becoming common in electronics.
Great video. 2 questions. Do you know what made it spark/shock u? Also, my battery doesn’t do anything when pressing the indicator button…yours at least lights up all four and blinks…do u think this will still work for mine? TY
I clearly shorted something for a split sec. If nothing comes up, you want to measure out the cells, with a multimeter,, make sure there is the same voltages on all the cells,, with in 0.1-0.2 volt of each other. if a cell is low, it needs to be brought up to what the others are at. If the whole battery is low you need to bring it up a bit. The electronic board will cut off if the cells are all way to low,, so you will need to charge directly on the cells. They do not need much,, just enough to reactivate the electronic board again,, and then let the normal charger do the work.
@@MyPlayHouseyou really should do a video showing what you mean here! Would be greatly appreciated. I’m about to start working on mine tomorrow hopefully it’ll work but if not would be nice to know how to do this part too!
My circuit board is a bit different, I see the RST contact but it’s next to five other contacts vs yours with just the 2 alone. They are marked RST, DAT, GND, 3.3 V, CLK which two do I need to touch across with my wire?
Glad you enjoyed it :-) I am danish but have a vacation house in Portugal. To be quite honest,, Denmark is a little better on "Well working systems" but Portugal is close and the weather is a lot better :-)
My battery came from my late grandfather. It was left in the tool for an unknown amount of time, but probably at least a year. Its the 40v version. I dont get any lights when testing the battery with its button and no voltage when tested. I get the red/green flashing lights when i plug it in. Internally my battery looks identical but the resetting did not work. Im wondering if its possible the battery is too dead, and if leaving it on the charger with the flashing red/green will still provide it some charge or if the charger has a feature built in that will not allow it to charge.
sorry this is going to be long...my fairly new ryobi mower wouldn't start. It had 1 battery in it and the other had been charging for a few days. I tried starting again w both batteries and nothing. upon plugging both batteries into the charger, I got flashing red and green on the charger. if I press the button on 1 battery it shows no lights. The other, flashes green then only the 1st and 3rd. i have searched for hours before asking such a long question and found nothing to help me decide if its possible both batteries have issues or possibly the charger?. . Im hoping the fix fixes the batteries but thought Id check to ask if this is a problem you've come across. Thank you in advance.

Seems to have charged even better. Will know how well it works in the next day or two. Now I want to go rummaging for batteries that were tossed out. I’m guessing not many people know this trick. Thanks again!
Worked for me! 🎉 You just saved me 200€ 🙏🏼 Thank you thank you thank you 👏🏻👌🏻👍🏻🙏🏼😊
You're welcome!,, I do enjoy helping and getting this awesome feetback :-)
Awesome, i tried this and it worked perfectly...
Glad to hear that!
Thank you. It didn't long to fix the battery and it was so easy.
I am happy to hear that you got it done,, yes it's not difficult. and lots of the times it does fix them.
Thank you so much, I just had this is exact issue with my battery and your video helped me fix it no worries!!!
Thank You for letting me know:-)
Thank you for the "YT" video and detailed instructions. It work perfectly! Much appreciation 👍👊
Glad it helped!! :-)
It worked just like he said. Excellent! Thanks.
You're welcome! And I am very happy to hear that you got it working! Thank You!
If you get a solid orange test light stick the battery in the freezer for 5 to 10 minutes and take it out and try to put it back on the charger. It’s apparently very sensitive to temperature as soon as it runs down.
Okay,, so it might have become to hot,, and need to cool down a bit before it will charge,, nice to know.
Im going to give this a shot I have a 40v battery that is doing the same. Thanks
Best of luck to You,, I have made a new video, on the same problem : ua-cam.com/video/eApFurP54Ls/v-deo.htmlsi=L_YcC9-xvBIU5yEA
Might help you to see that as well..
Thanks I just sent mine back to ryobi I’ll wait and see if they fix it 🙏👏👏
Yes,, opening it up, might make it difficult to use the warranty afterwards.
Brilliant! worked exactly as how you expained! thank you.
Glad it helped! hope I earned a subscription :-)
Thank you so much, I have the exact same battery and the exact same issue and this fixed it, I managed to lift the sticker off in one piece by sliding a blade under the back of it, I didn't let the sparks out of mine like you did though 😂
Thank You for letting me know!! I like helping,, so it makes my day!!
It can be used as a door stopper when it is bricked😀 It seems the lighting of your kitchen is very high color temperature daylight bulb (6500K ?), sometimes automatic color temp malfunctioned and image becomes blue-ish
Automatic with balances might be slow. :-/
thanks for the video. I had one similar that i got renewed under warrenty, now my new MaxPower stopped working. Do you know if they have the same reset inside? Dont want to open it before i have cheked if warrenty covers it.
I see in the comment that there are different models,, and this does not work on all of them. So chances are slim.
Thank you because you just saved me $129 for a replacement battery
Thank You!! that makes me happy as well. I do enjoy helping people getting more out of your stuff... :-) and $129 is a god saving, that is much better spent on something else!!
@@MyPlayHouse I tried it and.....it worked. 😀
I just discovered your channel - excellent video and you've got a new subscriber!
I didn't catch the name of the screwdriver tool that you used to open the battery though...
Thanks for the sub! the tool is a "security torx"
Totally worked for me. THANK YOU!!
Great to hear! Thank You!!
I am going to try it now. I hope it works. It will save me $125.00. I do have the security torx bit.
Best of luck... hope you manage it.
Tysm, fixed all my batteries....it worked :)
Glad I could help,, and thank you for telling me.. that makes me happy,,, helping :-)
This fix,, has helped a lot of people,, you might need to messura all the cells to make sure all is good... first.
Save the day....didn't even use special tools for the screws, just place bit barely in the surface and carefully unscrew...Thanks it works...😅
Hi @rondamon8004
AWesome Thank You very much! glad you liked the video :-)
Thank you for watching! :-)
Not having ryobi but liked the video
Thank you,, Leonardo🤗 but who knows, maybe you’ll get the chance to help someone else out,, now I know. 🤔
Thank you for the tip; my battery is back :)
Awesome!! I do really enjoy getting these reports back,, and seeing just how many batteries we have brought back to life!! :-) Thank You!
Thank you. I appreciated your video. It will save me a lot of money.
Glad it helped,, and I am also happy to help you save your hard earned cash :-)
nice video, i fixed mine once ryobi sent replacement
Nice 👍 So happy to hear of your susses :-)
Have you really been using a weed whacker to clear all of your land? Good on you. That's a good amount of work. Guess it might be too high for like a law mower. Need one of those rideable ones :p
I bought a lawnmower,, but it’s to uneven ground,, much of it😳
@@MyPlayHouse ah right... The land did look a little uneven... Well keep up the good work!
Dude thank you so much for this life hack.
You are most welcome,, happy to help!!
I liked the video because - good job -. I *assume* it will work. Got my security torx ordered. Thanks.
I have gotten a lot of feedback with people getting it to work,, but also some that did not.
Thank you!
So if I tried this twice and then it will comes up as defective. So, i guess it's definitely defective, right?
Yes I only know this trick for this error,, sorry.
YESSIR! Thanks for the informative content.
You bet! hope it helped you!
I’m really scared to try this 😳But replacing us too expensive. Thank you!!
Good luck!! and look at what you are doing instead of filming :-)
Funniest video and helped me out. You just got a subscriber!!
Glad it helped! and thank you for sharing your success :-)
Thanks for sharing !You saved my life 😊
My pleasurer,, happy to help :-) Thank You, for letting me know!!
Awesome! Worked like a charm!
Glad it helped! and thank you for letting me know.
Well, thank you Sir! Off to buying a security wrench it is 🙏🏼
Hope you save your large expensive battery!! and please do let me know if it works out! Thank You..
People before you has reported this problem to Ryobi, gotten a new battery,, and then fixed it :-)
I just did it and it charged for two minutes then back to defective… I don’t know.
Great video and explanation! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 did the battery ever got into limp mode again after this? I have 4 batteries that all have this right now. Gonna go home and try. Thanks
Yes I have had to reset it again this year.
@@MyPlayHouse I tried on one of mine. It works for 3 seconds then trips again.
Thank you so much. I followed your instruction and I now how a working battery again.
You're welcome! and I am so happy to hear that!!
Great video and it worked like a charm! Keep up the excellent work!,
Thank You very much!!
Thank you for the hack! It worked!
You're welcome! and I am so happy you are letting me know :-) Makes me happy to know I helped someone else fix thire battery.
Thank you for sharing this, so helpful! This worked just as you described.
Hi @noeltreacy
Thank You very much! glad you liked the video :-)
Thank you for watching! :-)
I will try it out. Harbor Freight in the US has tamper proof torx allens in a set for $7. Even if is doesn't work these screws are becoming common in electronics.
Best of luck! Do let me know if you manages,, as in that case you owe me both a like and a subscriber :-)
36v there "40v" here, charger is at 44v 😅
That's awesome you used a bread tie--i used the same one in u.s.
Hi @FixItYerself
Thank You very much! glad you liked the video :-)
Thank you for watching! :-)
It worked!! Thank you so much!!
Thank You,, for letting me :-) It makes my day,, to know that I helped !!
Thanks!!!! It worked perfectly 😊
Glad it helped!
Legend this fixed mine 🎉
Awesome!! thank You for letting me know..
Outstanding video!! Thank you.
Hi @BillLillibridge
Thank You very much! glad you liked the video :-)
Thank you for watching! :-)
Thank you for this! Worked on a US 40v perfectly.
Thank You,, hope I earned a new subscriber :-)
Nice fix Morten.
Thank You,, hope it will help a lot of people.
My circuit board is a bit different, I see the RST contact but it’s next to five other contacts vs yours with just the 2 alone. They are marked RST, DAT, GND, 3.3 V, CLK which two do I need to touch across with my wire?
I would do RST - GND. But I really only know this.
Thanks for sharing👌🏾😎👍🏾👍🏾, I'll have to try this with mine🤞🏿
Best of luck!
Do you place the wire one in each hole, or both in the left hole!?
To reset it,, you need to connect the two holes (It is really the copper on top of the holes, you need to connect together with something metal)
Bravo Portugal the best coutry nice video tanks
Glad you enjoyed it :-) I am danish but have a vacation house in Portugal. To be quite honest,, Denmark is a little better on "Well working systems" but Portugal is close and the weather is a lot better :-)
You're amazing ❤ subscribed! 💯
Hi @GreyDuck95
Thank You very much! glad you liked the video :-)
Thank you for watching! :-)
You might have to charge directly on the cells,, for a bit .. and hope the smart charger will take over after a bit.
Great video, real shocker😂
Tell me about it :-) just to keep me on my toes..
Thank you. Worked for me
Glad it helped! 🤗
These companies that make these shitty, exspensive batteries, should be held accountable for this clear scam!
They do replaces the batteries...
It's not really a scam because the battery has issues if it's going to 3 volt. That problem will appear again so this is a temporary fix.
This helped me. Thank you.
Awesome,, thank you!
sorry this is going to be long...my fairly new ryobi mower wouldn't start.
Øhh I do not know your mower,,, it uses these 36/40v,, is the battery does not do as in this video,, you are better off chatting with Ryobi,,,,,
Worked perfect
Thanx so much 🤟🍻
You're welcome! and thank you for letting me know!! makes me happy!!
What size did you use to open it? Please help thank you.
It was a 10 or 15...
