The introduction of alcohol to poor communities globally, is a problem. Here at home (Southern Africa; Botswana/South Africa) I see the direct negative impacts on our communties. I am in South Africa and alcohol abuse ( within the drinking population) is rampant here, noting that she mentioned it's a small population percentage of drinkers compared to non drinkers ( a fact you conveniently ignored in the first part of the video) and that Europeans drink more. This is a story about alcohol affecting that section of the population which drinks, not the whole of Africa, not Europe this is very clear if you actually paid attention!
I've never heard of a person being classified as a recoverd addict, you're always gonna be classified as recovering addict no matter how long long you been sober, I think that causes people to relapse. That stigma needs to stop.
The whole thing about average alcohol consumption is the fact that I (and many like me; about half the adult population + children) drink maybe 10 beers a year. Which means those already worryingly high numbers are more than doubled! Yikes.
There is a big problem with alcohol amongst the coloured people of the western cape. A large % are susceptible to alcoholism due to their genetic ancestry. What makes it worse is that the wine industry in the region pay part of the wages in wine! I'm sure the industry would like to stop that practice, but there would be a riot. Compounding the issue is that sub standard wine is sold off in plastic bottles - 500ml is sold for about 50c US.

Would you do good if you had the power to do it? Why do we have to beg your Jesus if he has the power to heal? And who told you the people in Africa aren’t praying? FYI, Africa is super religious and yet they remain plagued by multiple problems.
The alcohol industry plays the exact same tricks they have played in Europe decades ago. I think there is value in looking at what Europe did (and not yet did) to combat the alcohol industry, or else African nations get duped by the breweries and destilleries just like the European nations in the past. Don't repeat our mistakes.

@andrewmuigai6573 I'm sorry to hear that. Unfortunately some people get addicted more so then others. I hope you and yours are safe and well. 🙏✝️
@@Bobsbud100 central Kenya is my home town and the population is being wiped out I wish I was able to tackle the menace coz I got an idea of how to solve the problem
Contrary to what the comments suggest, the report makes it clear that the problem is worse in Europe.
Yes, they mention it for two seconds in a 26 minutes video about Africa. Talk of brushing through EU's problems and focusing elsewhere as usual
Hard to say what's worse. There are more drinkers in Europe, average consumption per drinker is higher in Africa. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is certainly worse in Africa. And in general they have a tougher time dealing with the economic and health consequences from alcohol. Also the African alcohol industry is less regulated, adding to both the addiction and the health issues.
@@Andreas-gh6is watch it again. Much more than two seconds. Pathetic
@@MusehanaHif the topic is alcoholism in Africa (a topic that is NEVER covered anywhere in Europe: I'm about 40 and this is the first report I've seen about it anywhere), probably EU shouldn't be the main topic? So pathetic and idiotic commenting. Is this a joke?

Do you think someone under alcohol can think properly?
Google is free, you must look into why people with socio economic issues tend to have a lot of children. Educated yourself on that, you might be more knowledgeable on social issues.
@@LindokuhleSinxadi Well so the children can help with labor. Is that what you mean?
@@Flugs0 no, people who are in poverty or living in low income households tend to have a lot of children. Hence why a lot of African women have a lot of kids compared to women Europe. If a person is living in bad living conditions, they don’t have the same access and knowledge about health practices than a person in liveable conditions. I used to ask myself why are people having unprotected sex, if they don’t want HIV. But the truth is people still do it anyway. People who can afford, they buy mornings after pills and they could easily do an abortion. condoms are free in South Africa, but you can only get them in clinics, or other places. So imagine a poor person might need to go to the clinic every time they want condoms but a wealthy person just buys them at groceries stores or petrol stations. It’s about inequality of resources
It’s very classist to put everyone in one box, without looking at their circumstances. This is why women in Africa need to be more educated, so that they can make better choices. Because education kinda eliminates poverty.
Africa has 54 countries, the headline lumping them in all in together is crass at best, but probably very racist.
Yep
Because it is the continental problem.
@@mashobane6177 I suppose the problem is an African continental problem; after all the white drunks at the golf club in Cape Town share so much with the hidden alcoholism among the Arab minority in the basements of Cairo. Definitively an African issue, especially now that the drunk in charge of the UN is trying to set zero alcohol targets word-wide.
I'm an native african who also regard Africa as a country. We need to unity and treat the continent as a country is essensial for its unification.
@@ManuelJoao-gh3gb Cairo and Windhoek under one government? Sounds like a surefire recipe for totalitarian insanity, because it makes no sense at all. It is like saying that Paris and Delhi should be one country, simply because they are in the same contiguous piece of ground, Eurasia.
Africa lets cancel alcohol altogether....❤❤❤
Together with who ?? … you are on your own
Wait, Africa has 71% of the continent abstaining from consuming alcohol whereas Europe only has 37% of people who dont consume alcohol but the issue is with Africa?
And it's the European-owned companies who make the most profits from pushing their drugs on Africa.
But the 29% of africans who drink consume more alcohol than the 63% of people in Europe who do drink. and because of population numbers, there are more heavy drinkers in Africa than in Europe.
@@babadoom8972 Damn.... Okay okay.... Even though common sense numbers makes that highly unlikely.
Lack of entertainment industry is part of the problem. On weekends, there is nothing else to do if you're not religious
The introduction of alcohol to poor communities globally, is a problem.
Here at home (Southern Africa; Botswana/South Africa) I see the direct negative impacts on our communties.
I think the emphasis should be on the cultivation of entrepreneurship and self awareness in a manner that is culturally palatable to the community in question.
I won't speak about Europe or other continents because 1. They are not my concern 2. Levels of poverty here at home exacerbate the problem.
If it were my call, I'd ban the advertisement of alcohol completely similarly to the banning of the advertisement of tobacco products in both Botswana and South Africa.
This is an incredibly important subject. Thank you for highlighting it. It's crucial to change this attitude towards alcohol for the next generation.
I come from Kenya...and alcohol is a big problem, people die like insects every night just because of drunk driving
Morocco, Ghana, Malawi, South Africa; there are huge differences in alcohol consumption and acceptation. Thus like this it is a nonsensical question.
you forgot to mention that almost half of africa is under 18 years old. (0.65 billion out of 1.37 billion)
the percent of adults who are drinking would have been interesting to know.
not factoring in the age of the population may be why they keep talking like its very small group of drinkers, but it has a big impact on the economy.
1:54 29% of the population in africa could be about half of the adults.
thats why its showing up as a small percentage of the population, but has such a negative impact.
lmfao because all of africa is the same. Northern Africa has mostly alcohol prohibted. And the rest of africa treats alcohol like an appetizer (compare to Italy). Absolutely crazy title. We don't talk about ALCOHOL ABUSE IN EUROPE dont we? top notch report that lost credibility within the first second.
"you have to explain yourself as to why you dont drink" that hit me so hard
Gotta wonder if Africans are worried about alcoholism in Germany... 😉
As a bad example maybe

Mr Creeper. Europe is substantially developed, economically and socially. In Africa alcohol is destroying our social structure from the bottom (children). And eventually there is no growing economy because we are focused on nice time and oblivion.

I knew they would focus on Kenya like it's the only country in Africa
I think its because the journalist is actually Kenyan could be partly the reason.
Liquor stores don’t fail, equally concerning are all the little empty baggies lying around my city.
I've never watched a lying 🤥 news like this before, she knows nothing about Africa, the European 🇪🇺 one weekend drinking alcohol that's more than Africa two months drinking alcohol.
Wow, what drivel! Perhaps it's you who knows nothing about Africa!
It’s not a lie bot. It’s a story about alcohol abuse in Africa, not Europe, muppet
Ill never stop drinking alcohol...even after work im gonna have a couple of drinks😂
Yikes.
Alcohol abuse does not only happen in Africa, but it is a world wide problem.
They compared it or you didn’t use your glasses?
There is a big problem with alcohol amongst the coloured people of the western cape. A large % are susceptible to alcoholism due to their genetic ancestry.
What makes it worse is that the wine industry in the region pay part of the wages in wine!
I'm sure the industry would like to stop that practice, but there would be a riot.
Compounding the issue is that sub standard wine is sold off in plastic bottles - 500ml is sold for about 50c US.

This is not even about racism... In my country Zambia, about 67% of the population come from low income homes which highly contributes to high alcohol abuse. In My country there is a saying that " no matter how broke or poor a person is the will Always find a way to get drunk" it's really unfortunate a lot use alcohol to escape reality

I doubt that most individuals drink because they're depressed these days. Alcohol has become ingrained in Botswana culture, to the point where most consider nondrinkers to be strange.
It's shameful that DW doesn't know that Africa is a continent not a country
Most of our friends and family have been blind when it comes to viewing the danger of alcohol from the right angle. They seem to be drinking on other people’s behalf. Everything is going down with them. I am wishing them a fast recovery for those who decided to face the truth. Otherwise, those that are still blind, I feel pity.
