  • Taking the plunge into the rear tub overhaul. 40+ years of abuse has taken its toll There is corrosion, impact damage, wear & tear and I cant afford the time or money to replace everything thats badly damaged. So heres what I did part 1 of 2. Part 2 to follow - basically painting so part 1 is the fabrication / repairs and replacement parts.

    Gday, it’s definitely a jigsaw puzzle and I’m bloody hopeless at them, once the tub is painted and on then that’s a big step forward, great job mate, cheers

      If nothing else , its a few more square feet to work with as things start going back together ! Cheers Matty, Mat

    We’ve just started on our 110 defender restoration, rear tub is next to be stripped down…..
    Doesn’t look too bad but I’m sure it’ll need loads of work when we get into it!

      usual places on a 110, rust under the cappings in the rear tub and around the mount holes on the front bulkhead (like mine), YRM do pretty much the full set of panels for a 110 tub. Hope it goes smoothly. Mat

    You wont notice the demts when you are driving it Mat, and you will laugh at yourself for being so picky! I know cos i do it too! I would give the underside a thick cost of stonechp, it will seal all the tiny gaps and will act as sound deadening ! Good work young man!

      Still undecided on the 'stonechip' Phil. Ive read mixed reviews, where it can trap moisture behind it after time and accelerate corrosion. Im thinking more along the underseal wax (clear) so I can see whats going on. A ways off that stage though as I will do the entire underside when we are built up. The prospect of the noise in the tin can effect is of concern (to Skye) !

      You wont get damp under stonechip when you spray it on a surface as perfect as that one is Mat!

      I think we are all picky when it comes to things we build or restore. It shows that we care.

    That was a great film Mat, I really enjoyed it. It is really coming along now. Great to see your Daughter and Son helping. When it is finished the pride you have will be justified because you practically built it never mind restored it.

      @@lookcreations I can imagine that it does. I sometimes wonder if my Harrison Mill will ever cut metal. It will though. And you will be coming up to the Highlands with your fishing rods in the back of Clanger soon enough.

      Its a day to day battle: on the one hand I want the finished Landy to look like Ive put some hours in and a good result, on the other I dont want it too nice or I wont want to use it for fear of damage ! Then my tight ar** kicks in and helps resolve matters along the lines of 'can I afford that to be replaced within budget ?' usually no, so can I improve it with what I have in short ish time.... then some time after working on the 'issue' - 'sod it thats good enough its not going to be concourse ! It works out sort of :-)

    it's an old Land Rover, it's never going to look pretty. I'm amazed how much you have improved it. When I visited America years ago I bought some rods for repairing aluminium that only need a soft propane flame but harden up to be tougher than the aluminium itself. I believe that they are the same sort of thing as Lumiweld, though they were nothing like as expensive. For small repairs it might be worth trying some Lumiweld: you can fill holes by using a copper backing to which the Lumiweld doesn't adhere.

    Hi, hope you have a mask on doing that surface prep on Alloy with them power tools as it’s not the kind of dust you want settling in lungs..🤔

    • @lookcreations
      @lookcreations  Рік тому +1

      Ive been wearing a mask designed for dusts and VOC. Finally found one that once its on is pretty comfortable and not a hinderance as long as I dont want eye protection... still looking for mask with eye protection though. Ive also worked out that using a slow running abrasive with #60 grit keeps the dust down and yet is quick. All the best Mat

    Best way to remove the floor pan?

      Drill n grind the rivets out. S3 were held in with pop rivets and a kind of steel bolt n nut - they have to be ground off.
