  • Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said a trip he made to a "safe" part of Ukraine on March 15 was "bizarre," with normal life going on until alarm sirens sounded. Speaking in Prague to RFE/RL's Ray Furlong on March 17, he said "Putin has to be defeated in Ukraine."

I salute my Lithuanian brethren. They were the first to declare (and stand up for) their independence from the USSR, and they joined NATO the first chance they had. My ancestors fled the country due to Russian persecution, and I'm glad to see modern day Lithuanian doing everything necessary never to fall under that oppressive culture ever again.

This guy is spot on. Putin has to be stopped IN UKRAINE. And some in the West saw Putin for exactly who he is. But many, particularly those who found ways to benefit from Putin's kleptocracy, found it inconvenient to see that. So they didn't. And now we are here.

Putin and its movement will definitely end (by his own hand, Ironically) in Ukraine, and not just that (on top of the fact that a failure became a fatal failure), with everything that they did there Putin and its ilk (and the whole collective of the ministers of the regime) will be Internationally tried for war crimes and the crimes against their people.

Maybe its because latvia, poland and the other noisy little baltic states are jealous of Ukraine.
Ukraine is bigger than all of those little meaningless nations like latvia and whatevervia, Ukraine has resources and before the US meddled in ukraine and overthrew a legitimate sitting government Ukraine had one of the smartest work forces in eastern europe.
All the other nato nations are and have always been jealous of Ukraine and they have worked very hard to drag Ukraine down to their levels and but it took help from the US for the west to drag Ukraine down and turn it in to the sad pathetic state its in today. That and the ukraine oligarchs.
Notice how the average person does not want to fight in ukraine, the oligarchs dont want to.
They all know this is all manfuctured by the US, its a pack of lies by the west.

Everybody needs to listen to this man. Very well stated, no nonsense.
It absolutely cannot be overstated how important it is that Ukraine win this battle and win it asap. Is it war? Of course it is, but it is only a battle in a greater war, that is clear. Putin won his battle over Russia first, as all dictators must in their own homes, and he began pecking away at his targets, beginning with the smallest and most vulnerable first - Chechnya. Most of the world misread it, both because Putin timed it that way to test the field, and because much of western journalism icons were being taken over at the time and redirected elsewhere. Chechnya's own regular use of terrorism was easily exploited by Putin, who could then use it to turn his own crimes against them. Then tiny Georgia, largely ignored by the increasingly inept and distracted Western media and politicians, and on and on he went.
Like every violent NPD despot, he will only continue and escalate until he is forcibly stopped. It's not at all good enough to stop him where he is, he needs to lose badly and be pushed all the way back so that he cannot do it again. Anything less than that will only allow more terrible death and destruction, like any other serial violent criminal.

He is right. Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia are part of the JEF - the British led Joint Expeditionary Force - which includes all the Baltic and Scandinavian countries. Unlike NATO we are able to act unilaterally or as a group. Our join naval forces are already in the Baltic. They had an emergency meeting in the UK on 15th March to decide on next action, attended by Zelensky. The next day, the leaders of Latvia, Estonia, and Lithuania were in Ukraine. JEF can act while NATO is thinking. Putin must be taken out.

I am not complaining so much as I am cautioning the entire world that if it is not willing to nip in the bud the actions of Putin now, we will most certainly be compelled to confront him later. And the effects of that will probably be much worse than the risk of starting a WW3 now.
A world that bows to the will of a bully and dictator today, will either become a virtual pawn of that bully and dictator or be forced to fight him later. And as we saw with Hitler, because the world was not willing to confront him early on, the ultimate conflagration that resulted was much worse than it might have been.
Just as a free individual cannot long endure the abuse and domination of a bullying neighbor, so too, the free nations of the world cannot long endure the abuse and dominance of a bully and dictator among them.
Of course, the possibility of nuclear war is paralyzing, and the present fear of that happening is what gives Putin his ultimate edge. He knows this and wants the world to think he is crazy enough to use nuclear weapons. We need to call his bluff by letting him know that the world will even risk nuclear war to save freedom and democracy in the world.
The world not only allowed Putin to exist but did business with him. Now the world must pay the karmic price for its complicity. And that price may be a third world war, which might mean nuclear war.
This is a horrifying thought, but reality does not care what is horrifying to humanity. The world we create and the results of that creation are as they are. If we cater to autocrats, we will have to live with autocracy as the way of the world. Or we will have to stop allowing autocrats to evolve and exist in the world.
At the moment, Ukraine is the center of our universe. It is the focal point and pivot point for our future. What we decide to do there will determine the direction we will take to that future and what that future will be. Will it be a world where freedom and democracy become the way of the world for all humankind, or will it be a world where the dream of freedom and democracy is dead, and slavery and autocracy rule?

@@KemesabeVendigo I never get tired of promoting freedom and democracy. I am a product of that freedom and democracy. Here is a piece I wrote concerning the last few years we've been through here in the U.S.
We Have Come A Long Way
We have come a long way since that fateful morning on Lexington Common, April 19, 1775. It has been a long haul, pulling ourselves through time and space to build and maintain a country that keeps growing in ‘liberty and justice for all.’ It has not always been pretty, kind, righteous, or good for everyone. We have not always followed the right path, or ethical path, or path that everyone could follow. Lady Liberty’s torch of freedom has sometimes been dimmed and nearly extinguished by selfishness, greed, and cruelty. More often than not, mendacity, avarice, and hubris were our primary motivators and not the twin principles of truth and justice.
But somehow we have kept going. Somehow, despite all of the corruption of our values from within and all of the threats to our land from without, we have maintained a system of laws that enable us to rectify the mistakes we make, both with each other and the rest of the world. And no matter how far down we go or how high up we fly, we still find ourselves back on level ground and moving forward towards that ever-receding but always the visible goal of 'a more perfect union.’
This is no mirage that we continue to head towards. This is not a fool’s dream that leads us on to some dark dead end, where we and our country fall down a deep hole and onto the garbage heap of history. Oh, there are those among us who think that our sins are too great or that our dreams are too naive. Their cynicism darkens our path and attempts to lead us onto some plain of despair, where we abandon our founders’ dream, throw away our constitutional map, and wander off in some random direction of disillusionment or self-absorption. They think that some alternative route is the answer to our sins or the fulfillment of our dreams. They think that time and lies have worn out and broken the moral compass that the founders left us.
Ben Franklin’s words ring in my ears now, “You have a Republic if you can keep it!”
And Washington’s refusal to allow himself to be made a king, swells in my memory.
The echoes of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, “that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth!” surround me.
And Franklin Roosevelt’s reminder that “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself!” straightens and strengthens me.
We must not forget what men like these fought for, sacrificed for, and strove to leave us. They did not prattle on with idle chatter, to sell us some cheap ideas and easy solutions to a frustrated and angry crowd of disillusioned and disappointed miscreants. They were appealing to the ‘better angels of our nature.’ They were speaking to our inner character; that deeper nature that contains our conscience; the conscience that tames the savage and selfish beast and allows compassion to temper and moderate our behavior and actions towards our fellow human beings.
What the Founders also left us were warnings not to let ourselves fall into the trap of allowing a would-be autocrat like Donald Trump to seduce us into believing that he has the answers to all our problems and that all we have to do is to let him upend our values and traditions, break all the rules of decency, and run things his own way, free of the encumbrances of government and the wisdom of the ages that has been passed down to us.
We fought a revolution to free ourselves from a monarchy, we do not now need to return to a time when one man dictates to the rest of us what will be, separate from the constitutional laws that guide us. We do not need a wealthy, morally and ethically bankrupt, would-be dictator, and his coterie of retrograde sycophants, to take over the reins of our democratic republic and turn it into a country run by thieves and cutthroats who have very little appreciation or concern for our system of governance or the people that it is charged to oversee for the common good of all.
So, we were standing at a crossroads, and we made a choice, in the fairest election in American history. Now, the future of our country, our system of governance, and the lives of our descendants will return to the path it was meant to follow. And the direction we now take will ensure that our country will continue to grow towards being an even more perfect union. It was, as it always been and always will be, entirely up to us. And our national motto, E Pluribus Unum, will continue to stand.
      JRB
Democracy, with all its variations and flaws, is still the best form of government for the people of this planet. And Ukraine is a shining example of the will to freedom and democracy that lies in the hearts of all human beings, despite your, or anyone else's, derision and cynicism. Glory to Ukraine! Glory to the Heroes!

There must not be a debate about whether putin might expand beyond Ukraine or not. It must not be about should we provoke him. It cannot be about our fear of what putin might do. He has spoken and written on record for 20 years about what he wanted and intended to do. We did not listen, and so here we are now. This is, whether we want it or not, a defining moment for this world. Will we take a step towards leaving our barbaric past behind us, or will we continue on embracing force and aggression at the expense of peace and prosperity.

I 💯 agree with this guy, he's very thoughtful. This disaster is also an opportunity to end the entire cold war era and start a new picture of a unified Europe, but the west and allies have to throw everything they can possibly offer to aid Ukraine. I see it as really unfair that it is Ukraine who gets stuck fighting this cold war leftover and we don't have to.
Also the entire war and its miseries, as well as continued alienation from the west, as this guy said, is the caprice of just one spoiled little man, and he is right now holding the planet hostage because nukes. I grew up so far away in Canada, and yet all of us share this perpetual threat of nuclear war, since I was just a child, like, honestly. Getting so sick of feeling scared!!!!

Also, given the already chaotic situation in Europe on both economic and political sides, it would be unachievable goal. However, we can prepare for democractic transition of Russia, and provide assitance when Russian population try to etablish democractic regime by themselves.

In my opinion, Putin is already as good as dead. I'll be suprised if he is still alive in a couple weeks. The amount of damage he has done to Russias economy and amount of young Russian's lifes he has recklessly wasted will manifest itself in Russia very soon. Still, I'm very worried about what will happen when he is gone. Too many people in Russia won't accept the truth and they will blaim the rest of the world for the misery that their government has caused. Russia won't transition to a democracy anytime soon. I believe Russia is not like a post-WW2 occupied, war tired Germany that you can "de-nazify" and democratize. I fear many people in Russia would simply vote for the next Putin given the opportunity.

Nationalism is a culture and tradition of primitive hate. There can be no nationalism, unless there is an enemy somewhere. If there is not one with tanks and guns, it must be created. Refugees, EU, WEF, liberals, gays... everything goes.
Nationalism was born in an era, when deadly enemies actually did exist, across Europe. WW1 and WW2 are culminations of nationalism. Nazis were nationalistic by the name. It is time to give up destructive nationalism and evolve into something better, until we are all doomed.

@@vihreelinja4743 Indeed, territoriality evolved into nationalism. Territoriality exists even in monkeys, basically most advanced lifeforms on earth are territorial (resources, breeding etc). Nationalism is extreme, evolved form of it. Nationalism is not satisfied with solving a simple territorial dispute, it seeks to destroy entire populations based on their characters - like religion, skin color, moral values etc just because they might one day become a problem. That is what Russia does atm... it prevents something imaginary from happening, Ukraine prospering within EU is danger to their values (Ukraine is not a threat to their hunting grounds etc), that is why Ukraine must be destroyed.
