  • On August 17, 2011 Norfolk Southern ran an Operation Lifesaver Special from Manville NJ to Oak Island on the Lehigh Line and back on the Chemical Coast and then the Port Reading Secondary. My dad and I were invited to ride on the train, but when we arrived we were told that one of us could ride in the locomotive on the Lehigh Line, and one of us could ride in the locomotive on the Port Reading Secondary. So in this video you will see some familiar spots along the Lehigh Line and Port Reading Secondary from both the locomotive and the coaches, including Bound Brook, South Plainfield, Union Station, Roselle Park, just to name a few. The crew was very friendly, and gave us lots of information about the two lines we traveled on. The train was pulled by NS GP38-3 5826 in a special Operation Lifesaver paint scheme which was followed by NS 28 "The Powhatan Arrow" NS 29 "The Powhatan Arrow" and NS 26 "New York." This truly was an amazing experience, I am very thankful that I was able to be a part of this extrodinary trip.

    I am beyond jeolous!! I've been in a cab only twice, once as a kid. The whippany museum had a huge open house with conrail loco's, m&e and nj transit. You got to walk thru a GP40 cab and also sit in the Comet I cab. Then second time back in 2006 a employee of a local railroad invited me up into a tunnel motor.

    This is really the best cab ride video I've ever seen. It was nice that you got to see the Chemical Coast Line from an angle where no one but the train crew can see. That speical went in a complete circle didn't it. Glad you were able to ride this.

    Wow lucky man! People don't get cabride offers that often period, never mind the fact it was from the OLS special. This is definitely being added to my favorites.

    This is some really cool footage as few of us get a chance like this. I love the cab chatter as bits of information are tossed about among the occupants. The various engines caught near the end such as the ex- Conrail are all plus's in this video. The gutted passenger car is a nice moment of interest as well. Seeing the train from the outside is the definite ''clincher'' to this video presentation. Way cool! Take care....

    @zdoryan95 Thank you very much! This was my first time ever having a cab ride on this line. Being in the cabs of these beasts is truly awesome.

    Wish I could be invited to something like this. Someday, someday. This is quite incredible, a cab ride on the Lehigh Line, something you don't see much of.

  • @CSXACe

    @SusQ45 Thank you, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Inside the cab is actually a very dynamic environment contrary to what I originally thought. The real treat in terms of power was a UP SD70M which was on the point of an intermodal (not in this video) and two BNSF units that were on an ethanol train. I thought the outside shot would be a nice way to end it, I'm glad you feel the same.

    @ARandall70 Thanks man glad you liked it! It was funny I was wondering why your video looked like you were filming at the floor of the engine, now I see that it was in fact the high hood that gave that optical illusion. That must've been really sweet!

    @bbobs327 While they were in the NYC area for a conference, I had hosted a group of system wide Norfolk Southern Police officials to a tour of the WTC site. Their way of saying thank you was to grant me a ride on the OLS Special. And as I had previously pointed out, permission was recieved from NS supervisors, and all FRA regulations were complied with.

  • @CSXACe
    @CSXACe  11 років тому +1

    Hopefully you aren't considering getting a job with the railroad then! Despite it being welded rail it was nothing like the NEC where the rider doesn't feel anything. I did my best to keep the camera steady throughout the video, sorry it wasn't steady enough for you to watch the whole thing, hope you enjoyed what you were able to watch!

    I could be wrong, but I believe the GP38-3 is rebuilt from a GP50 but is internally a GP38-2. If you were to look at a photo of the radiators on this engine you'd see that the two radiators are farther apart than a normal GP38-2, that space is from the third radiator found on GP50's. Sorry for the week delay in responding, I haven't had power since the 29th.

  • @CSXACe

    @bbobs327 Unfortunately I don't have much more than what is seen on this. I video taped when I could, but for the most part I really just enjoyed the trip. What was filmed in this video is most of the "hot spots" on the Lehigh Line and Port Reading Secondary. The Chemical Coast I didn't take much video of because there really wasn't much to see with the exception of the BNSF power. Anyway I hope what I have in this video will be enough! Thanks for checking it out!

    What is the purpose of cab signals? Are they safer? 765 had to be equipped with cab signals in order to lead the train on ex-PRR in PA. 765 also visited Bound Brook, NJ in summer 1988 to pull 2 railfan excursions to Reading, PA and back. At that time, all the freight main lines through Bound Brook (toward Newark, West Trenton, Phillipsburg and PA) were Conrail owned.

      Tuned? How can ya tune a horn?

    • @robertgift
      @robertgift 9 років тому

      chaosdemonwolf1 A horn can be fine-tuned by adjusting the length of its resonator.
      I tune pipe organs. They have reed pipes which are slightly similar to air horns.

    All NS GP38-3s are rebuilt GP50s, as for any other RR who has "GP38-3"s they can be made from anything as there is no real standard GP38-3 from EMD. Thats why there are all different locos that the GP38-3s came from.

  • @GP9railfan

    @trainmaster101 Who are you to tell me I don't deserve this? I asked you to be quiet because you were talking and the train was coming, not a big deal. There were NS employees that came in and out of that area that morning and not once did they tell me I was trespassing, also there is no sign posted before you walk off the station platform saying that you are trespassing. I have NEVER gotten in trouble for being there and filming there so I honestly don't know what you are talking about.
