    I live at the top of the blue mountains in a small village called Mt Victoria. It is the highest point at over 1000m or 3333ft. It snows here every year.
    A 5 min drive down from here is Blackheath where govetts leap and the Grand Canyon are. Another 5 to 10 mins down is Medlow Bath where they got food. About 10-15 mins down is Katoomba with the three sisters lookout. A couple of mins further down is Leura then another 5-10 to Wentworth falls.
    This is most of the “Upper Mountains” area. They are along one road.
    There are so many lookouts throughout this area.

    I grew up in the blue mountains, a town called Springwood the second most populated town after Katoomba.We were in easy walking distance to the town and railway station, it would take ninety minutes to get from Springwood to Sydney central station. We had the gully behind us great views, not so great when we had wildfires around.😊

    Leura is 5 mins drive from Katoomba and the 3 sisters Wentworth Falls is back towards Sydney about 15 mins , Eucalyptus from the trees gives it that Blue hue , The clouds roll in underneath you . Visitors can use the train from Sydney to see a fair bit but the hidden places you need a car and some places a 4WD . It took until 1813 when Lawson Blaxland and Wentworth made it across the mountains to find fine grazing land and off course GOLD . Many an escaped Convict would disappear trying to get away from Sydney town . The Mountains are part of the Great Dividing Range that stretches from the North to The South and runs Parallel with the East coast for 2,175 Miles . Not far from this spot they found the Dinosaur trees the Wollemi Pine only seen in 175 million-year-old fossils . Its now exported world wide for peoples gardens . The 3 sisters walk might be 45 mins but the stairs down and up are the killer its almost a vertical drop , we used to be allowed inside the first of the 3 sisters but they blocked the fence you look over the edge and its a long way down.

    That coffee is a cappuccino which is what you would probably call a white coffee or an expresso coffee with frothed milk, and a light dusting of chocolate or cocoa powder on top. If you just ask for a coffee in most Australian cafes without being more specific they would probably prepare a cappuccino for you.
    The Blue Mountains have a definite bluish hue, mainly because the Eucalyptus forests produce a gas or a gaseous compound or vapour that when in high enough concentrations filters the sunlight to produce a slightly bluish haze. Also when viewing distant scenery it tends to appear more bluish because of the way that light is apparently filtered by the Earth's atmosphere, and in mountainous regions one can often see further than on flat ground.
    To give you some idea of how rugged that country can be the Blue Mountains are just to the West of Sydney and not far to travel to but Sydney or Port Jackson was established with the First Fleet in 1788 and the Blue Mountains were considered impassable by the authorities and settlers until an expedition in 1813 finally found a way through, about 25 years later, because all previous expeditions had failed to find a way to cross the rugged mountain ranges. With Sydney being a convict settlement this meant that whenever any convicts escaped custody the authorities never really bothered to search for them very far West of the settlement of Sydney. The native Aborigines probably knew of ways through the area, and maybe some escaped convicts did get through that way but none officially ever returned to be put back in irons and tell of their journey across the Blue Mountains. The Blue Mountains are not particularly tall, at least by American standards. You would probably only class them as hills but there are particularly rugged and steep in places with dense forest cover and numerous blind ravines

    Hi Tonia, glad you ask questions, because often the narrator assumes you the viewer know the context. One thing ommited is the smell of eucalyptus in the air from the gum tree forests. Also, in Australia, if there is a smoke haze, it means something is on fire. And in the Blue Mountains that's not a good thing.

    • @ToniaElkins
      @ToniaElkins  Місяць тому +2

      True, when you are from the area there’s certain things you just know but when you aren’t you kinda have questions lol. I like that in this video everything was pretty close so you can go to multiple cool areas in a day. I bet eucalyptus smell is really nice!

  • @brettbridger362
    @brettbridger362 Місяць тому

    The white fluffy stuff is mist/cloud. There is a blue haze (that's where the name Blue Mountains come from). This is caused by the high level of eucalyptus oil in the air, from all the eucalypts in the forest. As this oil is highly flammable, this is part of the reason that Australian Bush fires are as severe as they are.

    I visited Blue Mountains / Katoomba just over two months ago whilst on a road trip to Sydney. Beautiful, stunning place. Def competitive to the Grand Canyon. The Three Sisters lookout is 20 minute walk or 5 min drive from the town centre; only thing I was unhappy with was paying $58 for carparking around the town for the day. Jenolan Caves are nearby I went there when I was 9 years old but haven't been back since. If you have heard of a movie called 'Sirens', made in the early 90's, this was filmed in the Blue Mountains too.

    Why theyre called the Blue Mountains: The tinge is believed to be caused by Mie scattering which occurs when incoming light with shorter wavelengths is preferentially scattered by particles within the atmosphere imparting a blue-greyish colour to any distant objects, including mountains and clouds. Volatile terpenoids emitted in large quantities by the abundant eucalyptus trees in the Blue Mountains may cause Mie scattering and thus the blue haze for which the mountains were named.

    This is around my patch of the world. What you were seeing were clouds. However large fires are frequent in the area during Summer. Wentworth Falls to Leura is about a 5 minute drive. Leura to Medlow Bath about 15mins. I've walked down the 900 odd steps to the bottom of the Three Sisters a few times, then caught the Scenic Railway back up. There are some small caves and caverns around this touristy area of the Blue Mountains, however the Jenloan Caves are the large limestone cave attraction, which is about another 90 minute drive from Katoomba.
