My university dissertation was mostly about gaming being the best medium for horror and talked extensively about Silent Hill. It was more generally about the evolution of the grotesque in media and was part of a performing arts degree, so gaming was somewhat tangential and for some reason I also waffled on about Bo Selecta, so it didn't grade well 😂
The Cyan Man did a "my wife" joke in his playthrough video of the original Silent Hill 2 a couple of years ago. It's really funny and well worth looking up.
whoop. The original was kinda perfect. Yes you can improve the graphics or the fighting mechanics. But you will not be able to capture the original. It is a well put together package. Very similar to how Neon Genesis Evangelion was its own perfect thing. Yes you can borrow from it, but to try and recreate it is annoying tbh. I am still annoyed how they took out the fly me to the moon music on the Netflix version. That was kind of integral to evangelion! When you take it out it makes it more depressing. Those little artistic features get missed from remakes.
Wait. How do you take out the key part of the experience in Evangelion?! 🤦 Probably a music rights issue. But still, that stings It is so true, that it's difficult to recapture that magic it once had. Silent Hill 2 on PS2, that felt fine to me, in that form. It honestly did not need a remake. And the music still delivers the feels and chills
@@kadosho02yeah even Netflix was like “sorry guys we couldn’t get the music rights.” They also got screwed over because someone at Gainax hates the Ocean dub and also the Funimation translations for the new movies so they made Netflix re-record a new dub using a script that they themselves translated and it resulted in just the worst English dub that felt like it was just run through google translate. “Shinji is the third children” is an actual line they were forced to record.
@@Balmong7-y4sI'd be willing to bet that was a call from Japan. No native English speaker with brain cells thinks that should be in an English script.
Hoping I remember to super chat these. 1) favorite RE was Revelations on the 3ds. From what i have seen the remake is well made but is a completely different thing, all about it is like the same as the original but feels off. The original is not perfect but also a work of art impossible to come even near to replicate in quality.
You'll like everything that's remade from the glory days of gaming, because the games nowadays have become so pathetic and boring. I'm not discrediting efforts of the team behind the remake. But it's a phenomenon I'm observing lately. It's happening even with music, movies etc. (the music especially). The music which I thought wasn't that good when I heard it back in the day, all of a sudden feels great when I hear it now on Spotify. Of course, it's because of that nostalgic feeling. But I also feel, it's because of the horrible state every entertainment medium has reached of late...
There is another sort of jump scare. Go to the top of the stairs of the hotel as soon as you get there. I won't spoil it, but it is very cool! It's a brilliant nod as to why Silent Hill 2 is such a great game, to have that kind of detail.
*Spoiler Warning* There's a couple other instances that could be classified as jumpscares: Laura on the piano in the Lake View Hotel's restaurant area, and in the Wood Side Apartments where when the player reaches an intersection of hallways, the sound of a baby crying is played.
Some people will never be satisfied. They could've straight up improved SH2 in every aspect and he'd complain that the pyramid on pyramid head is 3px too tall.
Just think, in the first few Personas you could always control everyone and even give them any available persona that they did not outright refuse to equip. What wild abandon. EDIT: (20 seconds later) Awww, my childhood dog had to wear the shorts once. ... Once.
I mean i personally really didn't like GoW (didnt play ragnorok) and whilst its not the sorst aspect i do feel, the combat is very barebones. No verticality, camera doesn't allow for anything other than fighting what's in front of you etc
I didn't mind combat in 2018, but for Ragnarok, it felt tedious (in spite of or because it was more of the same?). And for the puzzles/adventure gameplay, it shot itself in the foot by making the NPCs eagerly give help (without the option to turn that chatter off). Overall, I kept thinking that I'd rather play 1 or 3.
@@Smeighl he's not wrong. I played every God of War game except Ascension and Ragnarok and I agree with JM8. Might also be due to the fact that just about everything else for the new GoW is top notch in terms of quality, the combat just doesn't meet that same bar because it's already so high elsewhere.
They just dropped his Astro Bot episode in the last couple days I’m pretty sure. I watched it when it came out. Maybe something got it pulled or delisted.
I'm sick and tired of remakes completely changing the DNA of the originals in an attempt to appeal to casuals, i.e. "modern audiences", who didn't give a shit about the IPs previously.
In fairness many people, myself included, were too young to have played Silent Hill 2 when it first came out, and some hadn’t even been born yet. It’s not really their fault that Konami has allowed the series to fade into obscurity and is only now bringing it back because they saw Capcom making bank with the REmakes. And for the record I played the original SH2 a few years ago and I do think it’s better than the remake, though the remake actually turned out better than I expected. Definitely has problems, but it also has a lot of things I really liked.
@@BLZ231 I was also fairly young back then but I ended up eventually emulating the games so I don't think the excuse for newer players quite holds up. If they truly wanted to play it, they would have. I firmly believe that these remakes are for those of us who had no interest previously likely because in their eyes the originals are outdated. That's the crowd they're trying to reel in by "modernizing" these classics, as the rest of us, I assume at least, would have been more than content with a simple remaster with a few QoL improvements. I know I would have.
@@AntiRiku It isn’t quite that simple though, because the original Silent Hill 2 isn’t being sold on any digital or mainstream storefront anymore, and the only way to play it is to either get a second hand copy, which is an expensive hassle, or you have to pirate it. The former is inconvenient, and while Silent Hill 2 is abandonware pirating it is still technically illegal, and when those are your only options a lot of people are going overlook it because they tend to gravitate toward games that are more readily available through official channels.
@@AntiRiku What it comes down to is money. Companies do what they think will make them the most money, and they don’t care if it’s redundant or artistically bankrupt. As usual the problem is unchecked capitalism.
@@BLZ231 I don't think it's so much that it isn't readily available, although it is if you're willing to take emulation into consideration of course which is extremely easy for anyone to get into, but rather that these older titles are viewed as outdated and thus has to be "fixed" so that the reluctant mainstream crowd would bite. I think that's the crux of the problem. If it wasn't then why "modernize" it to such an extent? For instance, RE4 was on every modern platform, if I'm not mistaken, so anyone could have easily picked it up, as I did, but somehow they still felt the need to "modernize" it with a remake.

Went in as someone who beat the original twice and wasn’t sold. From a modern perspective, the game is just boring. The gameplay can be roughly boiled down to “find every door that isn’t locked to find a key or part of a puzzle, then try it on every locked door again. Also monsters sometimes.” The story of the original was fine, but as a game? I can’t recommend it. Give Bloober Team credit: they at least tried to make it a game.
The original was about exploration. Puzzles, and fighting. That is the basic recipe of survival horror. Yes if you have already played it, then it will get repetitive. I would just play the original for its vibe. The camera angles were actually a siginificant part of the vibe. Very much like a movie's camera angles. Alot of effort and artistry goes into camera angles. It is an art form in itself. But really the problem comes down to remakes. Make a new, good, spooky silent hill! (Which is what I assume Kojima was trying to do). People knock SH4, but it definitely makes a good go of what SH2 was about :)
@@Jeremiah59SH4 definitely felt like everything came together, and went in a twisted direction. The characters made it uneasy, the atmosphere shifted in tone. As did the music Still bummed about Kojima's project. It totally deserved to be released, not cancelled.

I mean it will never be as good as the original, but i have to say that the sound design in the remake is outstanding.
Pyramid Head introduction felt like a genuine loss. Muscle flexing rather than the uncanny valley interpretative dance that triggers flight response.
Oh no, Yahtzee is gonna be in the doghouse after this episode lol
But still, that stings
It is so true, that it's difficult to recapture that magic it once had. Silent Hill 2 on PS2, that felt fine to me, in that form. It honestly did not need a remake. And the music still delivers the feels and chills
Finally, someone who gets it
@@kadosho02yeah even Netflix was like “sorry guys we couldn’t get the music rights.”
They also got screwed over because someone at Gainax hates the Ocean dub and also the Funimation translations for the new movies so they made Netflix re-record a new dub using a script that they themselves translated and it resulted in just the worst English dub that felt like it was just run through google translate. “Shinji is the third children” is an actual line they were forced to record.
@@AbbaZappa who the hell don’t, never saw anyone saying the remake could replace the OG

1) favorite RE was Revelations on the 3ds. Played it in small sessions completely in 3d.
2) taking notes in legend of mana on PS1 was fun back when that came out. Before you could easily find the solution to fake language puzzles you had to take notes and do it yourself.
From what i have seen the remake is well made but is a completely different thing, all about it is like the same as the original but feels off. The original is not perfect but also a work of art impossible to come even near to replicate in quality.
The remake is a work of art too
I appreciate a fork turned sidewinder callback.
It's not the best horror "game" but SOMA has my fav horror game narrative by far, even beyond SH2, so that has to count for something!
What jukebox hurt them? is there a meta story to the jukebox? why add puzzles that mean nothing?

You'll like everything that's remade from the glory days of gaming, because the games nowadays have become so pathetic and boring. I'm not discrediting efforts of the team behind the remake. But it's a phenomenon I'm observing lately. It's happening even with music, movies etc. (the music especially). The music which I thought wasn't that good when I heard it back in the day, all of a sudden feels great when I hear it now on Spotify. Of course, it's because of that nostalgic feeling. But I also feel, it's because of the horrible state every entertainment medium has reached of late...
@@Gaskinmoo79It isn't bad, but my God Mary/Maria's VA is terrible, the scenes she's in just feel way too awkward.

There is another sort of jump scare. Go to the top of the stairs of the hotel as soon as you get there. I won't spoil it, but it is very cool! It's a brilliant nod as to why Silent Hill 2 is such a great game, to have that kind of detail.
*Spoiler Warning*
There's a couple other instances that could be classified as jumpscares: Laura on the piano in the Lake View Hotel's restaurant area, and in the Wood Side Apartments where when the player reaches an intersection of hallways, the sound of a baby crying is played.

EDIT: (20 seconds later) Awww, my childhood dog had to wear the shorts once. ... Once.
I don't know how I can take JM8 seriously. The gameplay is the worst part of the new God of War games? For real?
It has a fuck ton of problems they just aren't that noticeable if you blast throrugh it on normal difficulty

Nope it's still up. That's the most recent episode - the Astrobot one.
A lot of people moan about scripts, yet... they can't write better...

Oh so its minor nitpicking. Got it. Lol
Went in as someone who beat the original twice and wasn’t sold.
From a modern perspective, the game is just boring. The gameplay can be roughly boiled down to “find every door that isn’t locked to find a key or part of a puzzle, then try it on every locked door again. Also monsters sometimes.”
The story of the original was fine, but as a game?
But it also made this place even more divided, between the normal world, and the other side. They were not that different after all.

based. nothing beats the horror atmosphere of crispy PS1 graphics.
If Silent Hill 2 is the best horror game ever, then I guess Alien: Isolation isn’t a horror game, because it’s a better and scarier game.
Yes, and the Earth is also flat.
The original version of SH2 was fine for its time. Alien: Isolation. I heard lots of praise about its design. There can be more than one best horror game. Sometimes we need to explore something that makes us uneasy. But it is also smart, and challenges you as well
For me my top five horror games are:
1) Silent Hill 2
2) Condemned: Criminal Origins
3) Amnesia The Bunker
4) Alien: Isolation
5) Soma
Sure, Isolation is scarier... but SH2 is better.
