Explaining 3 New Problems with my Porsche Cayman 981 😬😬

- Its going to cost around £3,000 to repair the Cayman. I handed the keys to my 2013 Porsche Cayman 981 S to Porsche Centre mechanics and this is what they found 😬😬
Its a 2013 Porsche Cayman 981 S with 20" Spyder alloys finished in white. It has 63,000 miles and at the time of this video i have owned the car for 1.5 years.
This is of course if i wanted to continue using OEM sports exhaust. I will need to weigh up my options, it seems a shame to have to change the whole expensive sports exhaust for the sake of a seizing butterfly valve.
This video was made before the car was lowered (see my other videos on this car)

Wouldn’t like to reside there, as some would say…😊
Thanks for watching
Ah Lilliput village, nice! 😉
You get what you pay for
Yeah I mean most 10 year old cars will probably need at least something but there is always something with Porsches that’s for sure. Thanks for watching
The new ones also go wrong and it seems even worse saw a 718 GTS video huge repair bill!@@alsatch_ I have 987.2 cayman so far so good lol
Driven mine 7k miles in 2 1/2 months and no issues as well as 24K miles in 12, months and 74K in 8 years and no issues
I had white wheels o a motorcycle years ago. Never again 😂
So hard to keep clean even with the ceramic coating. Nature of the beast I suppose. Thanks for watching 👍
The problem with white wheels is they never match the body. These look cream against the pure white body.
Yeah the colour difference shows a lot more on video and pictures than it does in the real world. If you seen it in real life it’s very difficult to tell the difference thanks for watching 👍
Hairdressers spec’
I’m a builder and I’d drive it
@@pabloalcantara9093 alcantara option ticked too?
@@pabloalcantara9093 nothing fundamentally wrong with a 981 but as any Porsche owner and Porsche dealership will tell you it must be the right spec, colour, interior type, wheels and options, then don’t bugger about with apart from possibly suspension upgrade if you’re gonna ‘track it’
Thanks I guess 😅😅 thanks for watching
@@askiff1415Who wants to listen to porsche dealers and other owners when it’s your car 😂
Boring…
That 944 though ❤❤❤
So tasty isn’t it
I’m inclined to agree - especially now it’s got 405bhp 🎉
Yes, the problems seem like things you could probably take care of yourself. I'm sure the PSE issue is a known problem and someone in one of the forums should know the fix. If the discs are just starting to show a lip, I'd try sanding it off myself or if they need replacing, as mentioned, buy the parts and do it your self or find a good Porsche independent. Coolant leak might be trickier depending where it is and should be addressed before it gets worse. Again, a good independent will be able to address this for much less than the Porsche dealer.
Posh beetle 🪲 😅😅😅
To an extent, more so the 911 though 👍🙌😀
Evolution of a classic. I see nothing derogatory there. 👍
In Britain this is called good weather 😅
Satch : stunningly honest and superb content as ever. It’s not easy to fess up over your own car issues however it’s refreshing that you’ve worn your heart on your sleeve here and I thank you for that. I too have a 981 S and your details about the butterfly valves is interesting ; I liberally spray mine with WD40 Silicone. 👊👍👍
These “main dealers” are a bloody nightmare- you had loads of meat on those discs!!! I Wouldn’t worry about the exhaust sound valve but the coolant leak is an issue. Nice motor though, so much nicer than those ugly Panamera’s!
It’s worth keeping an eye on but yeah I mean these dealers hold these mornings for a reason, in the hope we will book our cars in with them. I do need to pull them out soon as they are starting to squeal when braking, and I’ll put some stuff on the back of the pads. Thanks for watching 👍
Panamera isn't ugly as of 2017
@@drunvert Nearly as ugly as Chris Bangles BMWs
the sport exhaust is on backorder for years at this point. i guess ill keep the stock one.
Can't you just use an angle grinder to grind the lip off the disc?
Beautiful
luv the wheels just done mine in gold! wouldnt worry over the exhaust get underneath and get it lubed with anti-seize as for brakes... design 911 set of disc/pads/sensors £400 fit yourself!
It’s a failure in the cayman and Boxster the coolant leak it’s super common
Thanks. Do you have any more information on what causes it specifically? Thanks for watching
@@alsatch_ all I know is I’ve had 5 Porsches and the Boxster and cayman 987 both had coolant pipe leaks. It’s a crap design by Porsche happens with age
living in a snow/freezing climate. my 2014 has no leaks but im in California the cars here last decades
What needs to be done about the coolant leak? I have the same issue with mine.
That Rolls Royce though ❤️❤️❤️
Tremendous 👍 thanks for watching
10 k in 5 years -
That 944 engine bay was off its head
It’s a mad build but I love it 👍 thanks for watching
Ta - it’s a bit of a labour of love
The owner is off his head too mate... 😂
@@fizzbitt 🤣
So what cost £3000 exactly?
The sports exhaust for this car is around £2,000 then labour to fit, new discs and labour/parts to identify and fix the coolant leak. All comes in at around a £3,000 estimate. Could be a bit more, could be a bit less. Thanks for watching 👍
@@alsatch_ Do you need a new exhaust for the little sticky valve issue? Seems excessive. I don’t think the 718 looks right without the gt4 bumper but the 981 looks great with either.
@@MadelnMachines unfortunately it’s all built into the unit, so you couldn’t just change the butterfly valves unfortunately. It still sounds good with the sport button pressed, but pressing the exhaust button alone is pretty none existent (sound wise) so I can either live with it, or change it. Also, it makes that horrible squeak metal on metal sound every time the engine is turned on and off. Drives me a little bit crackers. Cheers 👍
It probably is worth at least taking it to an exhaust specialist to get a 2nd opinion. I’ll do that before replacing anything 👍
Hi Satch, interesting video. I have a 981 Cayman GTS and the left hand valve linkage has snapped ( due to seized valve) and I think the right one is also on its way out , loud clicking noise like yours. The left side box is getting changed by OPC under warranty but there's a long wait on back order apparently. Love the lowered look and spacers, although I have to say you're probably pushing it in terms of spacer size on the back.
If I hadn't got the GTS I would have probably got an S like you and modified the f"'k out of it haha 😂.
Are your daytime running lights sporadically flashing at 9:05 or am I losing my mind? 🤔
It's just the camera, common effect.
Thanks for watching. Yeah it’s the effect of the camera. Not sure if it’s the frame rate or the hertz setting that causes it but it’s definitely not doing it in the real world. 👍
Personally i think the white wheels looks brilliant, the whole look with white bodywork and black side stripes gives it a bit of a track car look 👍
Thanks Jon. Trackdays in it this summer hopefully if I get the time. Thanks for watching 👍
The extreme close up of my ear was the highlight for me 😂
It’s one hell of an ear though. Never change it 😂
Hopefully the baffles can just be un seized? Maybe thats not possible I don’t know 🤷♂️
You’re right occasionally they can but often it’s too late and if they can be ‘un seized’ it’s highly likely it will seize again. Not the end of the world though
Hopefully with a lot of lubricant it can be changed. The exhaust itself still operates fine, but makes that horrible noise when starting and turning off the engine. Thanks for watching 👍
My sports exhaust is exactly the same. Exhaust button changes the sound but not as much as pressing sport. Interesting.
It’s a little frustrating because I’ve driven other Porsches where pressing the exhaust button does have a big change of the sound. Not the end of the world wonder if there is more of an issue that that. Thanks for watching 👍
@@alsatch_ I think it’s some sort of issue. I’d have thought that it should open both flaps (ooh err) when pressing the exhaust button. I shall do some research with my local specialist and report back 😂👍
@@s10lucky if you find anything please do let me know. Thanks mate 👍👍
It’s normal for sports button to make a big difference to the sound on these cars. Particularly the pops and crackles
Those wheels look fabulous, Al. 👍
Thank you Peter. I do love them. Bugger to keep clean though 🙈🙈 thanks for watching appreciate it 👍👍
That’s a very cheap shot. UA-cam ad revenue for 130k subs is far less than you think. But more importantly, try making half as many videos - no, a tenth as many - then you might have an insight into how much work goes into creating this free entertainment for you to enjoy. Opinions based on ignorance and speculation are worthless.
Couldn’t have said it better myself. 👍👍
Love those white wheels!
Thanks man I love them 👍 thanks for watching
Nice to see you making videos again, yeah Porsche repairs are not cheap to say the least. That Cayman is beautiful, worth every penny to keep her well maintained.
Thank you sir. Yeah love the motor worth maintaining 👍thanks for watching
White on white just works so much here. Exhaust still seems to work ok other than the noise. Nice to see you back uploading Satch 👍 x
Thanks. Exhaust is really nice. Not as nice as my 997 but still good. Thanks for watching 👍
I'm sure i recognise that fella, it's not the PCGB 944 joint register secretary is it?
