She's a teenager. Don't know what she did or did not do in her supposed 40 years but she's for all intents an purposes a teenager.
Right? My guess is that she was turned into a vampire when she was a teen and has remained a teen both mentally and physically the entire time. Her "no offspring" policy likely means she has limited "sexual" experience as well, so I don't see how she's "preying" upon Ko when she's (possibly) just as green as he is.

@@statesminds I mean.. if age doesn't matter then why can't it be Middle school age? I don't see the problem here.
My theory is that the writer used to wonder around at night in middle school and wanted to write about it. The apparent wisdom being the authors self-insert. My theory comes from having been a person who wondered around at night in middle school. The idea of making a little vampire romance story about that seems pretty natural.
It's also the age range that Shounen manga are supposed to appeal too.
the sense of nostalgia this anime gives me is unreal.
that would be cool, but the actual reason he came up with is because he listened to call of the night by creepy nuts and based the manga off that

@@seles2880 8.06
I was not even aware of the controversy until I watched this video. I mean I don't even use social media(UA-cam is an exception though) so to me , it never really happened.
So if a piece of media portrays a 50 year old man falling in love with a 6 year old girl, it’s alright because it’s “not real life”??? Ofc this doesn’t apply when the media portrays it in a bad manner (like Lolita) but call of the night does not censure this relationship
@@tazmoir yup, sure its creepy but its not real. It's fiction, a story. Who gives a fuck what's happening in something that's not reality.
@@tazmoir Well that depends. Is the 6 year old girl from a race that matures super fast and the 50 year old man from a race that matures super slow? Magna Carta 2 on 360 kinda did something like that (the girl was 12 and the guy was 200 I think). The thing with fiction is that there's a lot of interesting things that can be explored like that. We're getting too caught up on the numeric age and not the physical and mental age here.
I mean if they were both normal humans so it was a story about an old man and a little girl I'd absolutely be asking some questions but it being fiction I'd want some more context. Actually heck with it! It IS okay because it's fiction! Free speech and the like. I'd think the author would need to be checked up on, but I support their right to make something disgusting and weird.
MAL reviewers in general tend to try and appeal to the most people as possible, even if by doing it they ignore everything that makes the anime good. That’s why most review pages for popular shows on MAL are a shitshow where people try and suck each other off for bashing tiny aspects of otherwise amazing shows.
The reason those two myanimelist reviews are at the top is because rating a review as "confusing" brings it up the review rankings just like rating it as helpful does because the myanimelist review system is garbage. The top two reviews are so high up because everyone thinks they're bad.
Not to mention you have Anime Planet where they almost always features the worst reviews up front that makes up the minority in each of many anime series.
There is also a big problem with this in mushoku tensei and a lot of other anime. This video, some others, and reading the comments reminds me that most of the people on this planet can separate fiction from reality. They can figure out what the authors intent is further than just what it directly shows you on the screen. It just feels like that’s not the case because the minority is very very vocal on twitter and Reddit and the like.
What grinds my gears is how many offended viewers A) cannot separate fact from fiction; and B) cannot understand fiction to be a (safe) place to explore tough subjects and concepts. MT is a great example of redemption and second chances. Two concepts that don't always seem to exist in IRL and it is important to explore that journey. Just like a young man toying with a dangerous life altering relationship with an older woman... Hey fine it's cool. Police your own viewing habits. Police your own kids. I wonder if these people are consistent and complain about Twilight and Hotel Transylvania.
(And i kinda go off the rails here) And I wonder if they view age as an indication of how evil a person is capable. Or in another way how they must view life not in the mess that it is but in a regimented moral landscape in which every person experiences exactly what they are supposed to at every exact moment. Like Rudy would be 50 on earth really means what these people think it means.
I can never understand why so many people point at anime for p3dophilia when cartoons have shown as well such as Total Drama Island, Wakfu, 6teen, and Sym-Biotic Titan.
3:00 "I mean why are they shaped like that"🗿
Manga reader here - having read up to vol 7 so far, i can say that this is easily one of the most relaxing reads I've ever had. I will admit, occasionally I still wonder why the mangaka decided to make the mc so young when he just as easily coukd have made him 17 (he already looks and acts the part), but that's besides the point. Eventually you forget about it and simply enjoy the incredible read
Maybe because of the ending song? I heard that this specific song inspired the mangaka. And there is something in the lyrics about a 14yo boy. Idk just guessing
Yeah it might be the ending song the mangaka based this series from. The lyrics mentioned 14 years old and I guess the author just picked that and ran with it without thinking too deeply
Maybe the "don't know anything about love" isn't as convincing if the guy's 17 years old?
making kou 14 yo enabled author to show him basiclaly growing up
also my man volume 7 is depressing as fuck, how can you relax to that
Because in Japan they have this belief that your morale character changes the most and becomes what it will become from the ages from about 14-18
That's why these characters are these ages, even in anime aimed at older people. Because it's compelling to watch a young person have their morales formed and them to be challenged and grow.
Whether you agree with the depiction of minors in these shows is up for debate and another discussion
Remember the good Ole days of Twilight where the main female character fell in love with a vampire more than 5 times her age and we never questioned it?🙄
Yeah me neither.

Nazuna is different from the other vampires because she was born a vampire and they age differently, she is around the same age as yamori mentally. This also explains why she acts immature sometimes
Good to know
As a woman who grew up in the 1990's-2000's shoujo manga era, crazy age differences are absolutely nothing new to the medium. Most my friends were also interested heavily in hot older celebrities, like Brad Pitt. I'm not sure the impact of nature vs nurture here, so I can't say there is nothing that could hypothetically be done to curb "problematic" attractions or even if stomping out their use in media would make a difference in the way people find others attractive, but I'm also an artist myself and I find the notion of limiting what people should be allowed to express in art (with very few exceptions) to be quite scary.
If you're one of the people who does want to see less of this kind of media, I feel like the _right_ thing to do would be to bring more attention to the real life issues being portrayed. If more people were inherently against age differences in relationships for realistic reasons, I feel more media creators simply would make less of it (particularly non-critical portrayals) of their own volition. Active bans should only really be used when 1) there is significant proof of the harm being done by the media, 2) there are no alternatives to banning it to curb its influence, and 3) the benefit of banning the media to society far outways the limit it would pose on fictional portrayals of the problem of _all_ kinds (including critical portrayals). Otherwise, it's no different than schools and libraries banning LGBTQ+ books based on hypothetically legit fears of unproven, misunderstood, and fear-mongered non-realities.
I'm fine with age restrictions on a platform, trigger warnings, and even reviews intended to inform potential viewers of what to expect lest this one aspect of the media ruin everything good about it (it happens, and it's okay). But a lot of these reviews simply boil down to "This thing is socially unacceptable and it made me mad, so I'm going to drag its score down as far as I can with this review out of spite and justify it with surface-level social commentary", and that... doesn't sound very responsible to me. This is only personal advice, though. People can write whatever reviews they like. It just sits wrong with me. It doesn't feel like a responsible use of the review system.
Also, flashbacks to several youtubers who hated Re:Zero because of Subaru's incellish outburst. A lot of them even finished the story and that moment painted their judgment over like fog on glasses, causing them to take the show in bad faith and miss the whole start of Subaru's redemption arc. Like, hell, people. Who in their right mind thought the show was endorsing his entitlement?
It's sad how people are only talking about age gaps for vampires when it's in something made by Japan. There's an orientalism in how westerners talk about it.
You're an artist? :0 Where can I follow you?
Yeah, a lot of shoujo have age-gap relationships.
I remember watching Kodocha and how it actually addressed that it was problematic, and the characters then moved on.
@@Serocco Can you expand on your point about age gaps and orientalism? I'm curious about what you mean.
Kou is 14 for a very good reason.
Kotoyama asked Creepy Nuts if he can use their song title as a title for his manga and one of the lyrics in this song are something like "I was fourteen". I can't remember correctly and also I don't know Japanese that much to be so specific here but this is the reason
14 is also the age of consent in Japan... it would be like saying I was 16 in most of the US. Although in some places its 17 or 18 with exceptions. Not that Nazuna actually does anything to KO other than bite his neck and give him a peck now and then.
@@Wingnut353 It's technically the federal age of consent across all Japan but the lowest "state" level is 16 or 18 iirc. So effectively its 16 or 18.
@@Wingnut353 it’s sure as fucking shit NOT 14 with like several hundred year olds (or even idfk 20 year olds). It’s 14 w other 14 year olds (I presume no greater than a 2 year age gap, anyway). So uh… Nice argument?

I have this anime on my watch list and I am looking forward to watching it even more now that I saw your video. On another note, you are spot on Echidnut. Anime and entertainment in general is supposed to be there to take us away from our daily grind, an escapism from life itself. There are a lot of people who are unable to do that much less step away and take a look at something from a different perspective. Seems now a days the ability to walk a mile in another person's shoes has just about disappeared for many people out there.
This video was acctualy extremely well written. One of the favorite videos from Echidnut ever, the way you used the irony of human eating and vampire's eating was both funny and well to the point. It honestly baffels me that some people use the morals of current life to judge the morals of fictional characters. I forgot who said this but there's a quote I really like "the character's morals does not equal the writter's nor the story's morals" The same thing happened when mushoku tensei was airing as well.
What's offensive is that I'll never have the opportunity to be drained by Midori

The idea with vampires is that they are immortal, so age is not a number to be fixated on, but the opportunity to juxtapose a person that looks the part of their partner, but has a mindset of a bygone era, giving the story a narrative of a fish out of the water, creating a clash in ideologies, and providing room for characters to grow.
Absolutely love Nazuna! And love this anime. How often do we get vampire romance where the girl is a vampire? It’s way less common than male vampires with human women. If it looks and acts like a teenager, then it is a teenager as far as I’m concerned, specially in cartoons.
You could say the adult detective trying to hit it on with the protagonist is the one interaction that’s morally wrong, but it is clearly done on purpose to show she’s not right in the head.
Most of these people dropping bad reviews seem to not even like anime in the first place, they watch a couple of episodes out of curiosity and then pick the most superficial aspects of the show to criticize, I’ve seen door knobs with better taste in the arts than this sort.
True. I mean, Sophie in My Neighbor Is a Vampire was 360 - but she acted and looked so much like a middle school girl, that I even wondered, why the teachers didn't wondered why such a small girl is there in first grade of Senior High School ;)
And yes, unfortunally Anime has become too much mainstream and now we get all these normies, that don't really understand anime and just make up their normie opinions about it.

My general rule of thumb is that anyone who complains about the ages of characters in fiction should have their harddrive immediately investigated by the police. 9 times out of 10 they usually get arrested within the next year or so for actual real-life kiddy-fiddling. For all I know the remaining 1 out of 10 just managed to not get caught :P
yo echidnut love ur vids man. also this is my favorite anime this season
Can anyone correct me if I’m wrong but for those who’ve read the manga, remember during the arc where it covers the backstory of nazunas mother and well as nazunas birth? Didn’t they say Nazuna couldn’t remember anything past 16 years ago meaning mentally she’s 16. She was also born into her body fully developed right
This is one of my favorite manga and the anime has been just *chef's kiss* Nazuna is the best. My only complaint is why they always gotta make protags so young when not paramount to story. Like tokyo revengers. Why they gotta be in middle school? Haha
It would be one thing if nazuna showed some level of romantic interest, but her participation in the relationship ranges from repulsion to the concept of romance to just trying to have fun with someone she cares about. It's hard to call it pedophilia when the romantic dynamic boils down to that of a toddler saying they'll marry someone as an adult.
Yeah, I find the topic of romance refreshing for this anime.
Nazuna likes lewd jokes, but gets embarrassed when romantic love is brought up.
Meanwhile, Kou learns the difference between sexual and romantic love.
He wants to fall in love, but he's only doing so to become a vampire, which makes me think he's somewhere on the aro spectrum, but I could be wrong.
Where can you watch this show?
I didn't expect a LongBeachGriffy reference
Solid 8 or 9/ 10, will rate it 10/10 to compensate for the negative reviewers who mistook MAL for Twitter
Hello, can you please tell me what is the rating it has on mal and the ranking too, my Internet paccage only let's me use UA-cam, pls
@@seles2880 Rating - 8.06

@@ujjwalgandhi951 thank you so much for this. I really appreciate this thankyou
@@seles2880 no worries mate :)
This show is so fucking good. People need to learn to separate reality from fiction
This is a really well articulated video, but that chocolate cake metaphor is the absolute peak. Possibly the funniest line I've ever heard from an analysis video
Ahh time to wait for another 3 weeks for another masterpiece to be uploaded to this amazing channel
Spitting so much fatcs
Can't wait for your waifu tier list
I had the same concern once i read through to the reveal of Nazuna’s age but… idk it just doesn’t feel like kou-kun is falling for a 40 year old. Things will make more sense if people read the manga up to the part where Nazuna’s backstory is addressed.
That fact that you had to explain that it’s just a show is insane!!
I've instantly liked my boy Echidnut's videos for the past 6 months now, I just know I'm going to enjoy the slapstick humor and spitting truth each time. If I could mail you my likes so you could upload them along with your videos I would 😎🤙
this anime is really good but there are some questionable scenes that had no business in the show. but I think the main problem imo is characters ages in really most manga. I mean I understand why theyre all high schoolers but man its so unnecessary and usually causes some moral debate. for example with call of the night lets say our MC was in his 20s and instead of not going to school he just didnt have a job and bumming off his parents trust fund or something. you could still have the same effect of the people around him always questioning him and no one would complain about their ages.
That would be because author's like to write believable and relatable characters.
MC in his 20s bumming off his parent's trust fund and going through the mental and emotion gymnastics that Ko does is neither believable nor relatable.
Kids go through those phases. Very few adults do.
The highest praise anyone can give to a creator is: "I feel that."
@@HollyArtyFan "very few adults do" my guy you must be 18 because adults very much go through trama, depression, anxiety, and depersonalize all the damn time. theres plenty of american classics about adults going through hard times. The only reason Ko is 14 is because the manga is rated for teen boys, and teen boys in japan are very anti social outside of their circle. so having a manga to self insert into makes them feel better. its the reason why just about every manga/anime is about a kid 14-17 years old
@@walmartnibba4726 As cool as all those things are, they aren't what MC is going through. He isn't going through trauma. He isn't going through depression or anxiety. He's going through puberty. That's the mental and emotional gymnastics Ko is dealing with. Very few adults go through puberty. Ko is getting to an age where his emotions are getting more complex, and he doesn't really understand them. He is redefining his existence, as every teenager does at this stage of their lives, in a much more natural way than a man in his 20s.
@@HollyArtyFan i dont know if youre trolling or what. I didnt say he was going through any of that, I suggested that he should be a young adult and suggested what issues would have been relevant for him at that age for the story to still be as equally impactful.
Of course people here discuss morality in fictional entertaining like it is a big deal instead of actually doing something about real problems, it is just a way to pretend to do something useful that requires no effort whatsover, is like that slacker at the workplace that only mimics working when the boss is nearby; all of these are smoke and mirrors, no substance, meant to be as visible as possible and produces zero net possitive results.
Well, I didn't know I was a slacker because I don't particularly like the idea of a 14 year old dating a 40 year old...
Bruh it's the same here in the philippines with highschool. We even have a song "high school" reminiscing about it.
OMG THAT WAS THE SMOOTHEST TRANSITION TO A SPONSOR I'VE EVER SEEN ON UA-cam JESUSSTT CHRIST I STARTED CRAWLING ON THE FLOOR I TOOK A 5 MINUTE UA-cam SHORT BREAK JUST TO SETTLE DOWN FROM THAT ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL TRANSITION
Haven’t bothered to watch it
Honestly these people are privileged as hell if their biggest concern is a fictional character's age, race, gender etc.
"If humans had to have sex every time we ate food you and i would have died of starvation a long time ago" bro stright up said we get no biches.
Twatter: this anime is offensive, Reeeee!!!
Me: your face is offensive
The OST and the artstyle in this anime is incredible. At times I do feel that the story itself gets kinda dull at times, but I enjoy this anime alot.
I checked that Japan have a 3 year high school so he is a junior high, he would be in high school in the US but it is an anime.
Turn him into the vampire
**Kid can have dreams**
Wasn't Edward in twilight like 100 years older or something?
2:42 "the author just randomly pick a number from 1 to 100"
Lmao 🤣
Sound arguments from Echidnut. Didn't even know this was a thing or that so many people dislike the series I genuinely look forward to most each week.
As a vampire I can say that 40 years old is still very young to be dating. You have to be at least a hundred years old to date.
call of the night is sth i'll watch at night.. it's so chill and the music is a banger
