  • On September 15, 2014 Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band excited a full house of people by playing for nearly 1.75 hours worth of big band jazz music. One of the original Gordon Goodwin arrangements includes a tune called "Does This Chart Make Me Look Phat?" Another awesome sounding chart! BTW... you really gotta love the humor in the many titles of Gordon Goodwin's charts! LOL

Gordon Goodwin's Band never disappoints. Always the best musicians in the LA area, playing Gordon's creative charts.
Always a pleasure to come to UA-cam to see what's new - Thanks Tedv for posting.

It's Dan Fornero on lead trumpet for this song. Their phrasing is similar in a broader sense, but they are so different if you listen closely. Their sense of pitch, their sound, their attack, their shakes, fall offs and kiss offs, are all very different. I like this section sound too. Piercing and fat lead sound with nice cushion of support from the bottom. They can switch without people noticing because Dan is a killing lead player and Wayne is really good at the support role.

@@KazTrumpet Now that you mention it, they do sound quite different. Dan's sound is maybe a little rounder? Probably due to the way Wayne uses compression.

@@Djangolulu Well, they are good at adapting as well, so they can change their sound depending on the situation.
As far as their open lead sound goes, Wayne's sound is wider and smoother in comparison to Dan's sound. Dan's sound is brighter and punchier, and has more edge and pop in the front end of the note.
Check out Vine Street Horns with Dan playing lead. (Phil Collins Band) His sound is the perfect balance of fatness and sizzle. Wayne's sound is very unique. His sound doesn't sit on top of the big band. Instead, it blends all the voices in the band and makes the band sound like one big unit.
