  • The camera rolls as the Big Phat Band records "Race to the Bridge." For those who insist this band does a lot of fixes in Protools, we offer this. Some superb playing on a vey difficult chart.

    I like how Bob Summers does the trumpet hit with the rest of the section while he's soloing. Now that's a player. Buddy Rich used to say you have to know how to be a sideman, how to be a leader and how to be a soloist. Bob doing all three in one blow there. The great Bob Summers!

    Possibly the WORST Blair Witch job of videography ever to have been filmed BUT, fantastically awesome to hear what's happening audio wise within the room (despite the cameraman's determination to NOT get any decent shots of the brass, UGH!)

      +The Allegro Orchestra Often people shooting coverage will add camera moves that can then be edited in an interesting way in post production. This can be especially important in trying to add a degree of visual interest when covering 18 guys just sitting in chairs. But these moves don't always make much sense when viewing the raw footage like in this clip. The camera crew was there all day shooting, and each guy had to do his best to shoot the focal point of music that they were hearing for the first time.

    • @myorgen
      @myorgen 10 років тому +2

      Mark Howell It's the chord tonality which implies a dominant function, so as written for Bb Trumpet they have these notes from the top down:
      Eb (#9)
      Bb (7th)
      Ab (b13)
      E (3rd)

      +Megan Hallie the close finger position is just something that all sax players should practice in front of a mirror with. If y;our fingers leave the pearls, you can't play fast. I learned this from my teacher, Charles McPherson, back in the late 1980's.

      Man, I have explained this about 50 times on this thread. It was not meant to be a music video, it was just raw coverage, meant to be cut together at a later time. For me, I am grateful we got it filmed at all. Having said that, the video operator clearly was unable to discern what instrument should be the focal point at any given time. That did kinda suck, but we did have another camera going that day.

      Hey Gordon, you guys have filled the void to a new generation that Maynard and Buddy used to occupy. I'm a big fan. You and your band are big heroes today to band kids and other musicians. Have you thought about doing a Maynard Ferguson tribute piece like was done for Clifford, Jaco and others? It could be "I remember Maynard". I mean, you've got the band and the writing chops for it. Just a thought for a future writing assignment.
