So who is this complex character who runs one of the landings in the notorious Portlaoise Jail where he is serving a sentence for attempted kidnap and extortion and how can he manage to show to extreme faces to the world.
Nicola is joined by journalist Eamon Dillon to talk about the life, crimes and the oddities of Ireland’s most ruthless terrorist.

I was driving trucks in Ireland at the time the hunt was on for Dessie. Twas great craic, the Guards were scared shitless, not one of them wanted to be the one to find him. We used to give the Guards plenty stick when theyd stop and search. I remember one time being stopped with a container and the Guard asked me what was in it. I said if Dessie is in it I wouldnt like to be you. He went as white as a ghost.
I knew a lad who worked with him on a site and said he was as quiet as a mouse....as old saying goes it's always the quiet ones ya have to watch lol

Dessie O'Hare lives in Slaterock Rd, Netownhamilton...apart from the murders he maimed that dentist which caused disgust amongst so many. O' Hare was no Bobby Sands..he thrived during the Troubles because he could dress up his killings and disguise them as the work of a revolutionary. And then there was guns and this empowered O' Hare. He had more in common with Lenny Murphy of the Shankill Road than with anybody else. They became big and bold when they had weapons. No empathy. He is though a genuine relic from the Troubles. He is from the abyss. He is anathema and how he lives with himself is anybody's guess. I wonder does he ever see ghosts at night ? Perhaps he is just mad

I live 4 miles from were dominic mc glinchey was from in bellaghy co Derry. There is still a road sign for a disused council tip site. Along the road between bellaghy and Portglenone. And it’s full of bullet holes. Put there by mc glinchey. That sign has been there a long time. It makes me wonder why it was never taken down. Maybe it’s viewed as a piece of history ?

We are all products of the environment we grew up in... From the perspective of one of the people who grew up in the "Occupied 6" being daily reminded ever so sublely that you were living in a place that didn't want you.....The manufactured voting system....The racism when gettig a job , getting housing.. lower wages for Catholics all this are daily fact living in the O6... After talking to people from other regions of the world which had similarities of oppression the one factor always comes to the fore....the fact of children from a surprisingly young age realizing how they were differently treated, how their parents were differently treated...father's being victimized by society... Young children pick up on this, forming an internal pact within to fight whatever way possible the injustices they see perpetrated on their parents , their community.....

Just like in London. Police won't help if your skin colour is white for example. They have turned against their own. Things will change, it is our own country. I live 5 miles from tipp town and i always remember my parents talk about him breaking out of tipp garda station and that night my granfather who lived next door on the farm knocked at our house at 1am on a sunday nite i think and told my dad that if he came to our door to just give him what he wants and dont say a thing and gather whatever cash he had and have it ready we got the day off school d following day.😂😂 My mother gathered me and my sister and slept with us worried sick all night we were only 5 and 6 years old. I still remember that night.😂😂😂😂 we are farmers with no ties to anything ever but the fear he had on the country i kinda admire but don't agree with his crimes.

I think I was told one Detective and a uniformed Garda had him. I was in London at the time but the hunt (in general) made it to the UK news. I actually knew the uniformed Guard as I had a relative in Tipp Town and he used to walk the beat. And being young we all knew him. He wasn't long out of Templemore. Poor Guy. Could have been a hero! The Detective should have known better.

So you wouldn't like to be a Guard alone in a rural area unarmed and with bad communication at that time. I you bumped into Dessie you were in bother. The truck drivers in Ireland that time had no sympathy for Guards cause they treated us like shit. We were an easy target for them. We used to laugh at the fear in their eyes when stop and search.
