Thanks @Badspade! Tested and works much better than Airplay over wifi. Was able to extend display from M1 Macbook Pro to Late 2014 iMac 27 inch 5k. 1920x1080 is fine for my needs. Steps 1) Installed OCLP and upgraded to Ventura on iMac 2014. This channel has a video on how to do it 2) Go into settings of iMac 2014 and search for Airplay and toggle the option to recieve 3) Use a good usb-c to usb-A cable - make sure it supports data/not just charging. I am using an HP cable which has 5Gbps tx speed. 4) Go to displays in M1 Macbook pro, and add the iMac as an extended display. Note: my bluetooth mouse was noticeably slower, switched it to usb wireless and it works fine too.
wonderful. got my new Mac Studio connected to my old iMac 27 2015 at 3840x2160 (4K) which is the same resolution of the Samsung M7 monitor that I use to Mac Studio. No lag at all. Thank you very much.
@@VojtechMach yes, I prefer using Ventura over Sonoma, as Sonoma did not support TDM and Ventura ran better on both my systems. But it all depends on your Mac.
nice to see this working! wish iMac just had a generic HDMI or DisplayPort over USB-C - this would repurpose that gorgeous display well beyond the life of its CPU!
Yeah an HDMI port on these old iMacs would be awesome. Unfortunately apple loves dongles. But I was stoked when I discovered this. I was messing around with capture cards and such.
I am so pleased that you relesed this video. I can now use my late 2015 iMac as external monitor with my Macbook Air M2. I use the iMac with 4K resolution and the screen quality is really good and there is now lag or artifacts. Thank you very much!🎉
Thank you for this video! Now I am also finally able to use my 2020 iMac 27” as an external display without having any lags or artifacts. Until now I used Airplay via WiFi which was not usable at all for my day-to-day job. I just happen to have a USB-C to USB-C cable laying around (the original one from my iPad Air 2020) which I tried after watching your tutorial. After plugging in the cable, I was also able to choose the same resolutions as you were. 3840 x 2160 is indeed not ideal so I am curious to hear if anyone else already tried a better high speed data cable to see if MacOS will suggest more resolution options. In any case, I am already happy with the current results!
So glad it was able to help you! Yeah Airplay out of the box is not great but with a cable it’s actually usable. But I wish we could find someone to hack the resolution options. That would be a game changer for sure.
Unfortunately a thunderbolt cable won't unlock 5k or 1440p HiDPI. But I've managed a good compromise by mirroring an virtual display (see my other comment).
@@BadspadeLive, no problem at all, happy to help. I'm basically using software (BetterDisplay) to create a dummy display and mirroring it @ 1440p HiDPI to my iMac. My other comment goes into further details (it's currently at the top if you sort by newest comments). Feel free to ask any questions :).
Have hooked up my Mac Studio w/ Studio Display and my 2020 Intel iMac via Thunderbolt. While they should have the identical 5k resolution, it does not another problem I have is that even when setting them all up at the same resolution, there seems to be som,e scaling and the display doesn't align properly. So there is definitely some funkiness to it.
I noticed that as well. It is not a perfect solution by any means. But it’s a nice work around and gets the job done. But that’s what you get running unsupported software and patchers. It was never designed to run on those machines. I know there is a display app that can alter resolutions. I am going to play around with that and see what results I can get.
Hellloooo. I've been trying to figure out the best output to my M1 iMac from my M3 Pro MacBook and found a great but not perfect solution: turn off any kind of internet on the iMac. By forcing Airplay via Thunderbolt, this has dramatically reduced lag and image quality distortion from high frame rate content. I have left the internet on my MacBook as this is the used device. I hope this helps people looking for a more consistent connection.
Ok I am gonna try this now. If it works it’ll be the funniest setup ever. A maxed out M3 Max MBP connected to a base 2015 21.5” iMac hahaha!! I so want this to work! I’d love not to throw away the iMac
Wanted to let people know that usb c to thunderbolt adapter is not as good as a simple usb c to a cable. This seems counterintuitive, but apple logic. I had to upgrade the WiFi card on my iMac 12,2 (2011) to a Broadcom BCM94360CD (requires soldering) and upgrade the iMac to Monterey to get the AirPlay to connect to a MacBook Pro 2021 (M1). Usb a to c cable produced results as shown in this video. Was using a usb 3.2 cable if it matters. The ports on the iMac are only USB 2.0. I tried using a thunderbolt 2 cable and the usb c to thunderbolt adapter, both apple brand, and airplay actually only offered up to 1080p on the iMac versus the native 1440p. Wanted to let other people know.
after several trial and error I concluded the artefacts in airplay quality is not a matter of better cable or higher connection ... it seems apple compress airplay in mp4 quality at 40mbps or similar (way below a type c max rate). Unfortunately I think we just can hope for a future airplay ''high quality'' encoding option to get to Hdmi-like experience on airplay
@@gu_u. not sure, with a cable I have Zero artifacts and no lag on my set up, so I am thinking there must be something wrong with the transmission of your particular machines. But it is hard to say, I am sorry you could not find a solution
Did you use the USB cable? This should clear up the artifacts and the lag from airplay. I am not sure why the resolution options are so poor. They definitely need to update that feature. But for now it’s the only solution for these systems.
For clarity this brings back TDM to the 2011-2013 iMacs and even allows it to work when using Apple silicon as the machine driving both screens. For the 2009-2010 to work you need display port or a display port adapter solution?
It’s technically not TDM, this is Airplay which came around in Monterey. But by adding a cable it increases airplay capability. It will also work with an Ethernet adapter out of the M1 as well. So in theory it should work on every iMac. Not the same as TDM since that would give you brightness features and full resolutions on the other computer.
Also it can only run one screen at the moment. Not sure how to extend it to both screens at once without using a capture card for the other screen. As for the 2009-2010, yes a proper adapter should give you all resolutions.
It feels so close, yet so far away. My situation: 1. 2021 M1 iMac 14.14.1 to 2012 iMac 10.15.7. 2. Same WiFi, also connected USBC to USB 3. M1 iMac shows as Airplay display option on the old iMac, but I can't get the old iMac to be listed as an Airplay display option on M1 iMac. I can mirror/extend the old iMac onto the M1 but not the other way around. Any suggestions?

Really love the video and your setup. Quick question. Just bought an M2 Mac mini. I already have an iMac 27" late 2015 5K Retina display. Is there a way to use my iMac as an external display for my new M2 Mac mini. P.S. the new Mac mini is running Ventura 13.5 while the iMac is running Ventura 13.5.1. Please reply. Many thanks.
Sorry for the late reply. Yes follow the steps in this video and you should be able to get it working. If you do not see airplay receiver as an option on the iMac you will need to install OCLP and check the box to spoof for native OS. Then airplay receiver should show up.
So.... would have to install OCLP on my iMac Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2017 to use with my 2024 MacBook Air M3? First time of hearing of OCLP... very wet behind the ears here...

Just installed Sonoma on my Dad's 2017 4K iMac. The resolution options don't appear to change with a thunderbolt 3 cable or a USB type C 3.0 cable. Both the 4k iMac ( w/ Open core) and my 2018 Mac mini( running natively ) are running Sonoma. With either Cable I have the following resolution options for the 4K iMac: 1. 2880 by 1620 ( default ) , 2. 2560 by 1440 (HiDPI) 3. 1920 by 1080 (HiDPI) 1280 by 720 ( HiDPI ). Over Wifi I have the following resolutions: 1920 by 1080 ( default ) & 1280 by 720 (HiDPI)
So the resolution is not changing at all? It stays the same no matter which option you choose? Have you installed any updates. I had another person that said they did the beta updates and reinstalled OCLP and patches and that resolved their issue. I think it was a different issue but it may be worth a go.
@robsavage3296 right but airplay limits the resolutions to some weird options. This was the same for me on my video. The native resolution for my iMac was there but it was fuzzy? It was strange. But it’s most likely because airplay was not designed to run on these machines. But it’s the best we have. I wish we could hack the software and add resolutions to airplay.
@@BadspadeLive currently my favourite iMacs to use as a display are the 2009 & 2010 27 inch models. As all you need is a mini display port cable connected to the iMac. An Apple keyboard connected to the iMac provides you quick access to audio / brightness control. The resolution is 2560 by 1440. These iMacs have pretty decently sounding speakers. There is no operating system restrictions for the computer driving the display. The iMac that is being used as a display needs to be running El Capitan , Sierra or High Sierra. I had my 2015 MacBook Pro running Mojave , Big Sur and Windows 11 all using my 2009 27 inch iMac as a display. I also had an old Dell laptop using the iMac as display.
@robsavage3296 yeah those are great and work with windows. I tried to hook up my 2013 to Windows but the best I could find was an app called spacedesk.
Hi! I just tried to use my 2019 27" iMac as a secondary monitor for my M3 Max MBP via AirPlay and it works just fine, but the image looks kinda blurry. I get the same results by connecting them via wireless or via USB-C. My question is: if I connect them via Thunderbolt 3, will the image quality improve? I woyld have to buy a TB cable so I just wanna be sure in advance. Thank you so much!
Hey there. Unfortunately I have no way of testing out a USB C to USB C cable since the 2013 doesn’t have that port. The image quality should improve with a USB cable. If it’s not it might be that the cable might not have data capabilities
Hi I have a Mac Studio connected to 2017 27inch iMac and am eager to know if the lag got better with a TB cable, as the USB-C to USB-A cable has ever the slightest lag at 1920 x 1080
Yeah unfortunately I don’t have any way to test that out as I don’t have a 2019, I would say make sure it’s not your USB cable. Not all cables have data capability and that might be why it still looks blurry. Are you getting more resolution options with the USB? You can also try an Ethernet cable. It does work over Ethernet as well but you need an adapter for the MBP
What is your Mac Model? If it’s running native software, you may have to install a patch with the OCLP installer. I did another video on this. Airplay 2 MacBook, Use an Old MacBook as a wireless display thanks 2 OCLP, Works on any Year MacBook ua-cam.com/video/pdPo6hfUPqA/v-deo.html

@vicfalc09 I did a video on Capture card, I don’t recall why resolutions I got. Let me find the link, yes you do get that resolution with a card, be careful which card you buy as not all of them work with Mac
I know this isn’t an M machine but I’m working on trying to connect my MBP 2017 to my Late 2013. Airplay only works with mouse and keyboard over air. Can I use the USBA to USBC trick with this or would I need to stick to Tbolt 2/3 in this case? Also I’m running OCLP Sonoma on the iMac and vanilla Ventura on the 17 if that makes a difference.
Yeah the USB cable should work with airplay and that combo, and according to apple TDM should work provided that the host is the 2017, however the native software on the 2017 may be an issue as I think apple nerfed TDM after high sierra.
I can send the iMac 27, 2011 (with OCP) and also an iMac 27, 2017 (without OCP) image to my M1 MacMini, but how can i send the M1 MacMini image to these iMacs ?
From the Mac Mini you will have to add a display via airplay, if you have sharing enabled on the Mac mini you can screen share to access the Mac mini and set it up if you don’t have a monitor for it. The 2017 may need OCLP, but with airplay you can only use one monitor not two,
Hi, thanks for this explanation. It works fine on most of my systems, but from my 2013 MacPro to my 2014 iMac 27” both running Sonoma with OCLP it shows a distortion bar at the top of the iMac Screen. The other way around from the iMac to the 4K monitor on the MacPro it works fine. Both mac’s are connected via thunderbolt 2, Ethernet and Wifi. Someone any idea what could cause this?
I know the 2014 was kind of an anomaly. I don’t think that year supported native TDM so airplay does not support the best resolutions. I wish we had some programming knowledge and find someone to give us more resolution options. Even. From MacBook to MacBook it would give me black bars on top and bottom on certain resolutions. Just the nature of the beast.
I tested that yesterday, and you do not need to login to your icloud account but the computers do have to be on the same network. Also check your settings. Open settings and search for airplay and make sure that airplay receiver is turned on.
How did you get ventura on 2013 imac? Thought this was not supported. I have a late 2015 imac 27" and im looking to use it as a monitor for my MBP m2. Will this work? Thanks a lot
Mmmhh... I have a iMac 2017 on Catalina and a Macbook M2 on Ventura, when I go in the display feature on the MacBook Air and click + I can see my TV but not my iMac... any idea why? They are on the same wifi network
Yes Catalina does not support airplay, you will have to upgrade it to either Monterey or Ventura with OCLP then airplay should be available and then it should show up.
hi, can you test with thunderbolt cable instead usb a - usb c cable? I want to know if using Thunderbolt cable, Imac can reach better resolution. p/s: I have Imac 5k 2017 and i've just ordered mac mini M2 (on my way), so i want to use Imac monitor as Secondary Display. Thanks for this solution!
I actually can not test that. My old macs only have thunderbolt 2 so I would need an adapter and I do not know if it would work. However I have seen other videos of someone hooking up 2 M1s using Thunderbolt 3 but they did not cover resolutions. So it should work and I would be very interested to know what resolutions they receive
I did not test it. But yes it should work the same provided airplay is still available on both systems. Let me know if you get a chance to test it out.

Hi is there any way to use a 2015 5K iMac as a monitor for a windows laptop? Desperately wanting to increase the life of my Mac which is unusable currently. Happy to use any solution
For Windows, I have seen software solutions for this. The Retina displays do not have native TDM built in so your only solution is software. I believe it’s called 5K display.
Alternatively you could install Bootcamp on it and use the windows wireless display feature. That involves activating this feature as well. But it will probably work better than an app.

I think the iMac's Thunderbolt 2 ports are 'Out' only.
Thunderbolt ports are both input and output, unfortunately the 2013 will not work directly with the M1. You can only hook it up via Airplay the way I did. Adapters won’t work for this year model. Alternatively I have heard an Ethernet cable and airplay will work as well from M1-2013.
So I have a 5k Retina 2017 that I want to use as a display monitor for my new M3 Max laptop. The 2017 is on Ventura already, the M3 came out of the box on Sonoma. I see the AirPlay connection on my 2017 but not the other way around, I need it on the M3. Do they both have to be running Sonoma? And If I get my 2017 on Sonoma do I still need to download OCLP?
Hey there make sure both computers are on the same network and they both have airplay receiver turned on. I am not sure if the M3 can use OCLP so if airplay is not there we may need to look into that issue. But the 2017 should show up on the M3
@@BadspadeLive both are on my home network and both have airplay on. I was asking if the 5k 2017 needs to be running OCLP. @user-fz5oh8xk1e yeah you should be able to use airplay with the native OS,s. The older models use TDM and support for that ended with the 2013, so airplay would be your only option. Unfortunately the resolutions might be limited for you.

You are very welcome.
nice to see this working! wish iMac just had a generic HDMI or DisplayPort over USB-C - this would repurpose that gorgeous display well beyond the life of its CPU!
Yeah an HDMI port on these old iMacs would be awesome. Unfortunately apple loves dongles. But I was stoked when I discovered this. I was messing around with capture cards and such.
Really great solution here. Without the USB connection, the lag is very noticible. Now it's almost completely gone
Glad I could help
I am so pleased that you relesed this video. I can now use my late 2015 iMac as external monitor with my Macbook Air M2. I use the iMac with 4K resolution and the screen quality is really good and there is now lag or artifacts. Thank you very much!🎉
One thing. I first had to enable airplay with OCLP as it was not available by default
Fantastic! Hey could you share with us what resolutions you are getting with the 2015? I am curious if it changes from model to model.

@MrsDanielaP I did a tutorial on how to enable this with native software I will send the link in a few.
@@BadspadeLive thank you 🙏🏽
Thank you for this video!
@a.accioly could you explain further? I will search for your other comments
@a.accioly I will check it out.
Have hooked up my Mac Studio w/ Studio Display and my 2020 Intel iMac via Thunderbolt. While they should have the identical 5k resolution, it does not
another problem I have is that even when setting them all up at the same resolution, there seems to be som,e scaling and the display doesn't align properly.
Thanks for the tip . Airplay with a cable is the best solution I have found so far
Ok I am gonna try this now. If it works it’ll be the funniest setup ever. A maxed out M3 Max MBP connected to a base 2015 21.5” iMac hahaha!! I so want this to work! I’d love not to throw away the iMac
This should work with all old iMacs running OCLP and AirPlay
Thank you for sharing the knowledge
after several trial and error I concluded the artefacts in airplay quality is not a matter of better cable or higher connection ... it seems apple compress airplay in mp4 quality at 40mbps or similar (way below a type c max rate).
Thanks Sam! This work but the quality that my 5k iMac is displaying is no longer crystal clear. Why does Apple make this so difficult
Did you use the USB cable? This should clear up the artifacts and the lag from airplay. I am not sure why the resolution options are so poor. They definitely need to update that feature. But for now it’s the only solution for these systems.
@@BadspadeLive thanks Sam!
Of course. Also when you hook up the USB make sure to disconnect and reconnect airplay to make sure you get more resolution options
My situation:
1. 2021 M1 iMac 14.14.1 to 2012 iMac 10.15.7.
2. Same WiFi, also connected USBC to USB
3. M1 iMac shows as Airplay display option on the old iMac, but I can't get the old iMac to be listed as an Airplay display option on M1 iMac.
I can mirror/extend the old iMac onto the M1 but not the other way around. Any suggestions?

@@BadspadeLive both Macs were running macOS Sonoma 14.3.1 were they able to achieve 4K or 5K on the iMac ?

I have no earthly idea why this isn’t working for me. When I click system preferences it doesn’t even have the option to add a display

Alternatively you could install Bootcamp on it and use the windows wireless display feature. That involves activating this feature as well. But it will probably work better than an app.
@@BadspadeLive thanks so much! Do you have any links on how to set this up and what software is needed?

This video does a great job explaining the windows installation solution. It’s great if you are a power user like me and have a dual boot set up

This solution only requires a web browser and should work perfectly
Hello Thanks for this. I have a macbookbpro M1 2021 running on ventura 13.6 and an Imac of 2017 that I want to hook up but I can't figure out how. I can add the display with the + buttons on the Imac (and use the macbook pro as screen... which is useless) but reverse is not possible. I DONT SEE THE + BUTTON TO ADD THE DISPLAY. Its driving me crazy. Am I missing something?
Apple strikes again, they removed airplay as an option on the stock Monterey and probably Ventura on certain 2017 models. You need to install OCLP on the 2017!
@@BadspadeLive thanks I'll try this ... oh gosh and I thought from mac to mac should be straightforward 🤣
I know also you once airplay is enabled you may have to change the settings for it on the 2017. Just open settings and search for airplay receiver.
@@BadspadeLive thanks I' ll update you here once done. It might take time s I have a bad connection and it's always challenging to download heavy files. And if I understood correctly I have to install OCLP and reinstal the OS.
I think you can just install open core over your current OS. What are you running now. I saw a video on this. Don’t install it until I watch it again. I send the link soon
This is really interesting and thanks so much for doing all the work. I have an M1 Mac Mini from 2020 which I use with its own monitor. But I also have a 2013 27" iMac running OCLP Ventura in a different location that I'd love to be able to use as a monitor for the M1 Mac Mini. Will this work? You mentioned 'These restrictions do not apply if you are running OCLP' - does that mean I could connect the Thunderbolt output of my M1 Mac Mini to the 27" 2013 iMac in some way or do you mean by USB data cable? I think the iMac's Thunderbolt 2 ports are 'Out' only.
Thunderbolt ports are both input and output, unfortunately the 2013 will not work directly with the M1. You can only hook it up via Airplay the way I did. Adapters won’t work for this year model. Alternatively I have heard an Ethernet cable and airplay will work as well from M1-2013.
Thanks very much for that clarification. I'll have a go at the ethernet cable route and see how it works out. @@BadspadeLive
Yes! Ethernet does work with Airplay on my two iMacs as well, I just haven’t tried it with the M1 as I need an adapter for the laptop.
From watching your other videos it seems as though the older computer that you want to be the display needs to be running the OCLP. I just didn’t know if that was needed if my computer can natively be updated to the same OS as my new computer. I know a 2017 is a lot newer than the models I’ve seen in these comments so maybe the rules are different. But it is a 5k Retina and I REALLY want to use it as a display as opposed to having to sell it and maybe getting $500 for it lol
@user-fz5oh8xk1e yeah you should be able to use airplay with the native OS,s. The older models use TDM and support for that ended with the 2013, so airplay would be your only option. Unfortunately the resolutions might be limited for you.
@@BadspadeLive understood. I have a thunderbolt 4 cable so if your method works the same I’ll be fine there. I just couldn’t get my 2017 to pop up under the air play tab on my M3, but hearing that they need to be on the same OS I think my 2017 can get on Sonoma without OLCP. I’ll try that first and then if not I’ll still add OLCP and see if that works
@@BlairReid-u3w I don’t think they need to be on the Same OS, I am curious why it’s not showing up on the 2017, you are sure airplay receiver is turned on?
So my 2013 imac is still on High Sierra and says can't be updated anymore so I guess that's why this isn't working as I see you have the old 2013 imac on Ventura which is more recent. So do I need to try to force to old imac to upgrade to Ventura 13.6 for this to work? I have no other computer options showing in my 2021 Macbook Pro Displays setting to chose from like you do.
Yeah in order to get this working you need to install OCLP and Ventura on the 2013. Then it will show up for you.
@@BadspadeLive do you have a vid showing how to install OCLP and update to Ventura on old macs?
@kimcochrane769 yes absolutely. I did a video on how to install Sonoma on my 2012. I would install Ventura if you want target display mode. ua-cam.com/video/CaUPmhzLzhk/v-deo.htmlsi=c3OJWIDlVbRhaLwt
@@BadspadeLive totally doing it now. little scary as I haven't done this before. I'm currently waiting for Ventura to install onto my USB and we'll see if this actually works. so far the "Bytes Written" is still 0.00MB. :)
@kimcochrane769 make sure you back up any data. As this will erase everything
I'm planning to buy a M2 Mac mini and use my 2017 27-inch iMac as the only monitor by this method but I'm worried about a problem.
If I restart my Mac mini, how can I reconnect it to iMac without the screen? Thanks🥲
You should be able to use apples built in screen sharing to access the Mac mini and turn back on airplay. That’s how I would do it.
@@BadspadeLive Maybe use sidecar shortcut output the screen of Mac mini to my iPad first and connect to iMac after is a good solution😹
Access to airplay with no screen is too hard🥲
@@ywentc no look into screen share, I would use the iMac to access the Mac mini and share its screen even though it has no monitor connection. No iPad is needed.
@@BadspadeLive oh, i know what you mean. Thanks👌👍
@ywentc very welcome
