- The 2024 Suzuki GSX-S1000GX offers a taller, more upright, but more tech-laden sports tourer as an alternative to the existing GSX-S1000GT. The engine is the trusty K5 derived 999cc four cylinder unit which offers sports bike performance but tourer smoothness and flexibility. Showa Electronic suspension smooths out the bumps and a ton of electronics make the GSX-S1000GX the most technologically advanced Suzuki road bike ever built. So how does it stand up as a sports tourer? in this first ride video, I aim to find out.

Great review Tony, thank you. I think Suzuki will do very well with this bike. Some inexpensive aftermarket components will make it nearly perfect. It looks like a top case might not be the best idea for this bike however. Time will tell. Ride safe

Great review, Tony. It really bothers me when manufacturers make bikes where you have to replace the seat and windshield right away. Inexcusable on a sports touring bike. I often wonder if the designers/engineers even ride the bikes like they were intended.
you might give a shot to those 3D mesh thingies. They're cheap, come in bike specific shapes and for me at least, cured all numbness and what not on longer rides. Also, do some squats and build those glutes, that also helps :)
Good point. We designer people have a job to do, and that is to meet the parameters set out in the design specification. Performance, weight and cost for example. All design is compromise. So some buyers will want more features, some lower price, some more power, and some are never happy regardless of what you do. You could put 10 people in a room and they would not be able to agree on the perfect end product. Suzuki has made a specification, designed the bike for a target market, and priced it to make a profit so that they can build more bikes. That is the hard truth. Consumers decide what they want to spend their money on.
3 years ago this was exactly what I was looking for. 3 years ago I bought a 1290S as Suzuki had nothing for me after my 1000XT. Sorry Suzuki, this new GX is a bike 3 years behind the curve, it still doesn't do what my 3 year old KTM does. Suzuki are forever bringing a really nice bottle of wine to the dinner party, after everyone has gone home.

This bike is a cheap bottle of gas station wine. If they had put the 180hp+ engine in it then we have premium wine.
Completely disagree for many reasons. One of them: Suzuki gives you what KTM will never be capable of: Reliable fun and and a bloody legend of an engine!

right and what's the price difference between them? Where I'm now it's 17.400 vs 23.999. I mean the KTM BETTER be better. Also, should we compare Suzuki reliability vs KTM reliability? Sure if you want latest, flashy, trendy, bling bling you go KTM, me I'm a Suzuki boy.

Regarding the wind buffeting under your helmet it comes from the fork. Windscreen is ok. Ive done a 2 hour testride and noticed when you put your hand/arm in front of the hole where the fork is the noice is completely gone. They should have blocked it off just like on the Honda AfricaTwin
For me much more preferable to a big Goldwing or similar. Its a fast, touring bike, not a 2 wheeled car needing a reverse gear to park.
I suppose good value compared to the opposition, too, but hot grips should be standard, yes. As should a centre stand.
I think I've read top boxes and panniers are a no, which would limit pillion touring.
But, although not my thing, I think it's a great bike, and Suzuki are getting a lot right lately.

Comes with side cases for 16k no top box available off Suzuki grips £400 not sure about the centre stand I bet 250+

A pair of cheap mirror extenders, a Givi Airflow screen when it's available, a seat pad and you have the bike sorted, and a set of heated grips, a few hundred quid would sort out those gripes. Great review as always.
Agree strongly. None of these items are show stoppers. Besides, riders live to change things on their bikes, so if everything was already done we would be bored lol
Brilliant engine in a more comfortable spec, it will sell but I prefer my twins or triples for the style of bike.
Great review as always Tony, Top box not an option, no centre stand, no heated grips, no panniers . you can get these extras( not the Top box) at extra cost. They should make more of the 7 year warranty you get if you keep your bike serviced at Suzuki. I also watched your review on the Yamaha Tracer 9 GT + which I am taking delivery of next week!!!😉

Very nice machine. Oddly enough I’d already tagged this as possibly my next bike, I just love the stance and the upright look…. I ride the tiger 1050 sport which has a similar stance, but I have to say it is starting to look dated, but a four cyl, 150hp Suzuki would be a great replacement..

Great review, thank you! One concern I have with the bike is the single narrow headlight beam. I worry that at a quick glance, a driver may mistake the bike as being further away than it is. It’s something that would warrant me caution for the first few months of ownership.

That would actually be a very interesting bike.
Between this model and the GT, I would probably go with the GT because the seat height would suit me better, being only 29" inside leg, plus the less tec for me the better.
Unfortunately, it appears that Suzuki, for some reason, has messed about with the cam chain tensioner design with a lot of folk complaining of cam chain rattle at idle, which puts me off both models. Nice review, thank you.
Hi Tony, great review. Thank you. As someone who’s 189 cms tall, how did the wind deflection improve when you had the screen at its highest setting? Based on the differential between us I can only assume with the screen at its lowest setting would provide less turbulence for me at its lowest setting around the helmet, which is perfect for me. I guess you could always add an extra wind deflector at the top if required. In terms of seat to peg ratio, how much more does this offer over the GT (a bike I’m also considering for my next)? Either way, these need to be blue in colour, however it’s just a personal opinion. And finally, is it worth the extra coin over the GT in your opinion. Both come with rubbish tyres so I’d be specking them with some S22’s from at least the first service. Looking forward to your feedback. Cheers, Marcus.

Hi Marcus, It didn't really make much difference. But as drifterxl12 says it could well be coming up from the forks? I can't say i noticed it though
@@mancavemoto At 50 and someone who has done well over 1000 laps around my old home racetrack being Phillip Island, my pure sport bike days are over (even if I still take a couple out every now and then). Not after a complete bubble of wind protection, just clean air around the helmet as a Goldwing (if they still make them) will be my retirement gift in another 15 years. So, how did it compare to your Africa Twin? As the new 19 inch front wheel edition is another one I’m looking at.
Better wind protection for me on the Africa Twin and the new 2024 model is even better
Suzuki announced this a month after I got my 2023 V Strom 1050 ...errm, road edition I guess (not the DE). I was a bit upset I guess but I think I still prefer the grunt of the V Twin. That being said, I must give it a test ride, at least to see how it is.
Firstly it looks a great bike, but not for touring. Which after all is what it is designed to do..
Heated grips, and centre stand are extras.
Panniers are extra and very expensive.
Suzuki does not recommend that a top box is fitted.
Screen difficult to adjust.
Personally I think the pillion seat is a tad small and sits high.. Therefore the passenger sits way above the rider..
I love Suzuki but to be it's not a true tourer, plus the cost once that you have ticked the option list maybe excessive when compared to the Tracer 9GT+

Looks like the only bike in the segment that's doesn't have a centre stand. The Versys 1000,
Tracer 9GT, BMW S1000XR and the KTM 1290
all have one as standard.
Can't see one as an option and for me it's a deal breaker.
I was looking forward to this bike sadly for me it's a bit of a let down.
Cheers, there is a centre stand in the accessories catalogue, but no price as yet. As you say, It should really be standard on a bike like this
I sold my V Strom 1000 (18 plate) last year and considered a few a options, this bike hadn’t been released at the time but even if it had I’m not sure I’d have gone for it. It’s got the word bland running right through it, just not exciting enough and it’s missing some of the basics. Suzuki do produce reliable bikes (although some of the paint finishes aren’t up to it), naa you can definitely find more of everything for similar money these days.
Got a high price tag with a few extra electronics basically stick with gt version
I hope this new IMU and electronics package finds its way to the 800DE and RE as well. Those bikes really need this stuff.

@@DaleMt09sp nah not really, they're well positioned in the market even with a slightly higher cost. The 800DE at least has been received surprisingly well for an adventure bike on the off road side of the spectrum.
I mean it's a bike that can do what the KTM 7/890 Adventure can do but with a motor that won't fail. Suzuki ha a lot of KLR momentum in this segment, people know what their bikes can do.

Can't help thinking Suzuki are probably a bit late to the party with the GX however it's quite a good looking bike that appears to be well equipped , it also offers riders an alternative to Yamaha"s Tracer 900 GT, Kawasaki Versys 1000 and probably BMW's S1000XR, wait a couple of months and you will probably be able to get a decent discount on one from your Suzuki dealer which will make it financially appealing.

I can see the appeal, a little spendy but like KTM/Husky(Just bought a Norden) no one pays list, give a few months and dealers will be doing decent deals
A lot of money for a lot of tech that I don't desire. The GT version is much more appealing to me, however the more relaxed riding position of gx is a plus.
Would be interested to know from people who have ridden the GT and the GX whether there’s a noticeable difference in the ergonomics’ department. I’m riding a Ninja1000sx, love sports tourers but being 60+ I’m getting increasingly interested in the « Cross-over » segment although, on paper, I haven’t found one that ticks all my boxes: Tracer I found lacking in refinement, build quality and suspension, BMW XR I found too top-heavy and the engine lacking midrange and am curious about the GX but haven’t tried one and it seems to be getting very mitigated reviews…
The GT is a little more aggressive in terms of riding position, but still a little more relaxed than the 1000SX

I love the looks and the reviews of this bike, with one big caveat: the pegs are too high, I think. Maybe someone will offer 3rd party rear sets or lowered pegs, but I think the people that would like this bike, i.e. older geezers like myself (50+), bad or cramped knees start to become a thing to consider when looking at bikes.

Nice review, thank you. I’ve been a Suzuki fan since my first touring bike, a GS850 which I bought in 1981! But it doesn’t seem to me that this bike is really a proper “tourer”. It looks to me like a sports bike that you might take away overnight or for a weekend. It’s been dressed up with a bigger screen than a sports bike, and given panniers that hold a ff helmet, but these a touring bike do not make. Also, I hate the rudimentary front fender, which looks designed to throw all the gunge from UK roads directly into the engine.
My 2019 Versys 1000 SE GT appears to have all the necessary electronic gizmos that this Suzuki has, plus a bigger adjustable screen, mirrors that give a great view of the traffic behind, big comfy seat for rider and pillion, top box, heated grips and a payload bigger than a K1600 (look it up if you don’t believe me). Also a centre stand, surely an essential feature if you’re going to maintain your chain properly on a long trip. I would also suggest that the more upright, high riding position on the Versys is one reason why I’ve covered 16,000 miles now with never a sign of fatigue.
Finally, respect is due to the 150 bhp Suzuki have got out of this motor. But personally speaking, I don’t want or need that much power. The Versys’ 120 bhp has never felt less than I need, and the more important torque is similar to the Suzuki.
So, although I really wanted to like this bike, it falls short of my needs. But as I say, for those who want a sports bike for short solo trips, I guess it could be the answer.
GS850G, and other GS1000G .. brilliant air-cooled shaft-drive tourers ( should bring more shafties back, IMHO)

Very nice but I stopped with bige cc bikes and drive versys 650 which for me is enough on small roads which I mostly drive but thats my choice, I lost my interest in big cc, love also the zx400rr screamer also better and more fun on small roads.
Exatcly, does not matter in which gear you drive that's getting boring at the end.
Maybe too tall for those of us who are vertically challenged. 😬

I love Suzuki but I kind of feel like they're dropping the ball a bit when it comes to their touring bikes. Great to still have inline fours going, definitely, but when a bike designed to go from doing motorways and duallies straight to Wales B roads, ETC, the lack of an easily adjustable screen seems wrong. My 2002 Pan European 1300 has an adjustable screen and having gone from bikes with no decent screens, I wouldn't go back. It's why I still think the heavy weight tourers like the Pan, FJR, K1600, ETC, have a place in this world. On the point of luggage, I can't comment on the GX but certainly on the GT, the boxes are far too wide. On a Wales weekend with my IAM group, the leader had the 1000GT with panniers and they came out probably a good number of inches each side of the mirrors, worse than what my Sprint 1050 was like! If I was commuting with any of the modern Suzukis (especially since I am no longer a fan of top boxes), I'd go for a tail pack instead. Anyways, another great review, Tony!

I still think Kawasaki Ninja 1000 is a better alternative it’s got loads on the touring version,apart from the electric suspension and less than 10 BHP over the Kawasaki,and the extra ground clearance is something and nothing,even though the Kawasaki is years old in its design just a few upgrades over the years Kawasaki for me,,even though I’ve owned 8 Suzukis over many years,
14 minutes of talking and no mention of maintenance intervals, can it take a top box?, cruise control, blind spot detection, cost/value proposition, why buy this vs the GT or 1050 Adv. But you did say then engine was smooth 5 times, so I guess that makes up for it.
Brakes crap can’t get a top box no blind spot and stock mirrors are a blur at 60-70 engine is smooth if it’s in b or c but very tame stick it in A and you’ll get whiplash that and it doesn’t get going properly until about 8500rpm
@terrellgarren7125 It’s first ride review, so if you’re interested in servicing intervals that’s something you’ll look up. There’s a big cruise control button on the right controller, pretty obvious and if I didn’t mention blind spot detection it because it doesn’t have it. Cost value would come when comparing to other bikes. If i'd include all that in a first ride review it would be half an hour long and you’d be complaining the video is too long 🙄 Although there is no OEM topbox I can't see any reference that Suzuki suggest you shouldn't use one?

No good for two up touring as it’s not homologated to take a top box.
People are mentioning this, but I can’t see where that information is coming from. There’s no OEM top box, but there are third party racks and fitting kits
Anyone buying this bike and fitting a top box would need to check with Suzuki. There may be reasons why no OEM box is offered, perhaps to do with stability and handling. I think the Tracer 9 may have a similar issue. Apart from anything else, going against a manufacturer’s recommendation could affect your insurance.
Actually, after some research I realise that all top boxes, including OEM, come with a speed limitation. But it’s still not clear to me why my Versys SE GT came with one fitted by Kawasaki, and why Suzuki don’t offer the same for the GSX S1000 GX. I’m guessing it’s more to do with the image of the bike, which to me is a sports tourer for solo weekend trips, rather than a serious “tourer”.

Too much electronics for my taste
I like it but not the fairing. I'd rather have a triple or twin, though. Too much technology on it, as well. It's a waste of money. Who needs all this tech?
