I named my daughter Aubrey because of this lovely song, at 5 months into my wife's pregnancy. She died before birth. This song fully describes/explains it all, except she was due in July, not June. It's my daughter's song. "Like a lovely melody, that everyone can sing."

Anyone who has had an 'Aubrey' in their life, in my case it was a Jeanette, will easily understand this song. It guts me every time.

I'm old enough to remember my mom having Bread's greatest hits album, and listening to it over and over again. David's voice is pure and soothing, and this song is lovely yet heartbreaking.

It’s emotional, it’s contemplative, it’s poetry. I don’t know if the left swipe/right swipe generation can grasp it?

It's sad when I see reactions to old school songs by Gen Z-ers and they don't get the message it's conveying. They either laugh at it or dismiss it outright .
I saw at least two of them dislike Drive by The Cars not getting that the song was about an emotionally troubled girlfriend

David Gates and Bread are known for some of the most beautiful ballads and love songs that are so calming and always tells a story. Nice pick Chad. Guitar Man and Baby I'm -a Want You are worth a listen.

I enjoyed your reaction to this song. David Gates wrote this song after watching the movie "Breakfast At Tiffany's" starring Audrey Hepburn if that gives you a little bit more clarity as to what he was trying to convey in this song (ie. "I never knew her but I loved her just the same" and "We tripped the light and danced together to the moon"). The latter could be a reference to "Moon River" which was one of the featured songs she sang in the film. Other great Bread hit songs include "IF", "Make IT With You", "IT Don't Matter To Me", "Diary", "Baby I'm-a Want You", "Guitar Man", and "Lost Without Your Love".

David himself said he just needed a name for the song, and Aubrey fit perfectly.

      Hi Phillcro,
Thank you so very much for sharing and explaining the history and meaning of the song. "Breakfast At Tiffany's" is absolutely one of my most favorite movies. Again thank you, thank you so very much for sharing. Stay safe and healthy, God bless.

David was playing with us in this song. He state's clearly early on in Aubrey that not all song's have a meaning. He liked her name, he didn't know her, because there was never an Aubrey! Don't think too much into it. Bread and David Gates were a band that had many song's with deep meaning's. The writing of David was second to none!

Thank-you! I've loved this song since I was a young teen in the 70's. Tons of people adored this song and trust me, lots of babies were named Aubrey after this one. :) My other favorite of Bread's songs is Diary--it's a song with a twist! I think you'll like it.

I liked that Seventies music so much back then. Agreed; perhaps it was sometimes too sentimental, too bombastic, too emotional, too romantic but then the Eighties came and the music became "cool, reserved, with some distance" often also less complex and symphonic. It was never clear how it could change so profoundly in a short time.

Aubrey is our secret love… we all have our Aubreys. Someone we have fallen in love from afar… we never pick up the courage to say something to our Aubrey… it’s our lost love. A love that never began in the first place… we know that someone but never pluck up courage to tell her.😔

My favorite song from Bread would have to be "If" I think this song is about being infatuated with a girl but never having the chance to actually get to know her possibly because he was to timid and shy to approach her

Chad, I think you are taking it all too literally. I don't think he had her for only a day. It's like when people say it's been "a minute". And when he said he "didn't know her", he meant he didn't know how to get into her heart...etc.

This has one of the most beautiful melodies of any song I've ever heard, but the lyrics are a bit confusing. I think more could have been done with this song, if David Gates had applied it to a more personal, real life situation.

I'm a little late to the party, but...
I think it's not meant to be taken literally...
"I never knew her, but I loved her just the same"....like how you could know a friend or a lover for years, but never understand their motivations.
"She had been mine for a day"...it's expressing having a short amount of time with a person.
Ultimately it's about a love heavily one sided, and the lament of losing someone who no matter what you do, she just can never reach that level of love...he was deeply in love with her, but he couldn't find ways to make her stay.

I met a guy back in 1971-72, we fell in love instantly with each other, and spent the next 12 hours in total bliss, we did turn off the lights and lit candles and danced. I was suppose to go home and gather my belongings and come back to him in June. but i lost his phone number and I never made it back to him. we only had a day with each other... I so wonder if ??

He is in love with a girl that he doesn't really know--- a girl that he, most likely, can never have. He has loved her and admired her from afar. I immediately understood this song when it first came out, when I was nine years old. haha. Keep listening and thinking about it, and it will make sense.
