    So, going personal theory, the Glyphids ignoring the rival structures because they do believe them to be just native ore. Maybe thats why the Mules and Lootbugs are ignored as well: They are so full of the native ore that they just blend in for the bugs. And I mean, Glyphids have no eyes as far as I can see so they probably navigate primarily by smell. Great to find Miners, basically neglectable for most machinery, the exceptions being Pipes which have who-knows-how-many beard hairs in the connections, and Hacksy who is sitting with the R&D all day and takes on their distinct nerd-y-ness. Dorretta is probably only targeted because of the core, both her body and head are being neglected by the Glyphids... And company.

    I've heard some dwarves saying they believe the rivals to be elves, but I don't think that's the case. If the bots were gathering plants and wildlife data or were specifically stopping us from damaging the ecosystem, I'd believe it, but the bots show no interest in anything like that. Elves have no interest in gathering mass quantities of precious minerals, and I think that the only reason the rivals haven't done as much ecological damage as we have is because they're just scouting now. Plus, just look at them. Elf creations are all smooth curves and natural shapes, not hard edges and stark destruction.
    My guess for who the rivals are? DRAGONS. More specifically, kobolds working for dragons to increase their hordes. Kobolds can be just as crafty as dwarves, and they are known for improvising traps and gadgets with whatever they find lying around, just like the bot building themselves out of the planet's minerals. And, dragons are the only beings I can think of who rival the dwarves for love of precious minerals and gems, but they're also lazy, prideful bastards who prefer to laze around in their dens and let lesser beings do the heavy lifting for them: what better way to do that than autonomous robots? Even the fire weakness makes sense; can't let your minions try to overthrow you, and what better way to prevent that than making them weak to a dragons best weapon?

    FYI, as of this comment; the driller’s new crisper overclock “scorching tide” takes out every robot (except the caretaker) if you can aim well. The nemesis can be a little bit more difficult due to the nature of the shields it produces. Most times it can take 2 shots, solely because of it blocking the shot with a shield.

  • @kengored_og
    @kengored_og 8 місяців тому +6

    Here's what i think.
    The rivals are self replicating bots of a type 3 civilization, sent to modify entire star systems to make them habitable. Hoxxes IV so happens to be the richest planet in the system, so naturally, bots will try to capture it, sending a scout squad to scan the minerals inside the planet, in case they find something useful to build a mega structure, like a dyson sphere/swarm. They are fully autonomous and probably have a mastermind center somewhere in the Hoxxes system, constantly getting data reports from the underground. Early data reports showed that the caves of Hoxxes IV are rich and infested with organics, but not just the Hoxxes ecosystem, also dwarves. For us, dwarves, rival's design seems flawed, but actually, it is just good enough to withstand planets ecosystem. As said in the video, rivals are not armed to counter dwarves with heavy weapons. Their armor is mostly built to counter kinetic damage, aka the damage type most of the animals rely on when the they try to attack something. Would explain why glyphids don't attack rivals, similar to lootbugs. Anyways, since the bots main purpose is terraforming and not combat, they had to adapt, improvise, repurpose. Therefore the nemesis was born. I am afraid that if we fight to much, rivals will reinforce, but if we don't, they will finish the data analysis and send in the workforce, with more troops to guard the mining equipment from dwarves, since we made it clear that we can be a thorn in their side. But even if we keep that balance, i am afraid for what awaits us if we stall for too long and the type 3 civilisation's ships arrive, leaving us no other choice but to surrender Hoxxes IV to them. *Miners! Work hard, mine all the minerals you see! Don't let those pesky robots get any of our stuff, and let's deplete Hoxxes IV of minerals before we are forced out. Let's starve those leaf lovers of resources, they shouldn't have messed with DWARVES. ROCK N STONE!*

    So excited to see you again! Glad to know Long Rockpox (... or the disinfectant fumes) haven't done you in, I was starting to worry a little.
    Now, I'm a sort who likes to consider himself a bit of a robotics nerd (... above many other topics). I, uh, couldn't actually apply that to a degree, which... is sort of obvious why I'm stuck in the same rig as you, and not assembling servitors or intelligent massage chairs anywhere nice. But! My point is, ever since these machines have dug in, I've been utterly fascinated with how they're put together (and how the Dwarves take them apart). I'd like to think I know my robotics, so here's some additional... conjecture, based on my own observations:
    - One theory I can't just drop is that we might have a Grey Goo scenario on our hands. It's entirely possible whatever autonomous infrastructure these machines originally *were* made for has been long forgotten: the entire network of machines is now one big, hungry, collective organism that answers only to itself. It's possible they've swallowed whole planets, if not entire star systems: a simple protocol for "survival & propigation" growing wildly out of control simply due to how fast machines can adapt, and how limitless the potential mechanical design is. They find a system, devour it, devote the last morsels for transport craft, and move on - or perhaps even spread, like a mechanical Lithophage asserting itself.
    - The shredder drones are absurdly efficient, it's honestly a little scary. Their "brains" are basically absent, offloading most of their processing and navigation to their Caretaker Network. They could be hacked because there simply was nothing *to* hack - hence the grenades! Yes, some "malicious parts" had to be cut out, hence why they... uh, rip themselves apart after a while, but it's really easy to just connect them to a handheld computer, like the ones Engineers are always using for their turrets. Obviously there's only enough remaining processing power left to handle a single swarm, hence why spawning a fresh one just... turns off the last swarm, but still. I don't think it'd be impossible to actually get these things to give someone a good shave. Silver lining, y'know?
    - No idea why the bugs just... ignore them. Sure, the lack of bulky batteries means the Xynarch won't try and eat their circuits, but even something as angry as a Slasher just... walks right by. The turrets don't even attack the bugs, either. It's almost comical, two of the worst enemies on this rock, and they're totally happy with each other's presence. It *could* be something to do with their phase warping not triggering tremors, and their overall composition just registering as "not food" to the bugs, but they attack *our* machines... I don't know if it's a coincidence or not. Could there have been initial surveys of biological data? And if so, why didn't they seem to notice us? ... Did they get the data for this place before we even showed up?
    - The Nemesis seems to further my theory that the Rivals are one big emergent entity: its their first devoted counterattack against the Dwarves, and despite being highly specialized, it's... faulty. It's attacks are (mostly) recycled tech on present units. The claws are super-similar to the ones on the Caretaker Platforms, but specialized to crush and maim, removing the laser emitter for a much stronger magnetic actuator (and also, y'know, putting blades on the claws itself). The rest is just the machine making use of knowledge the Rivals have "learned" about the only threat actually present: the Dwarves. What they say to garner attention, mostly. And the ultra-violent, one-track-mind AI onboard just aids it in its specialized goal: the Dwarves are a present threat, eliminate them. Like an immune system or something. I'd characterize an antibody with the same level of vengeance - utter obliteration of its assigned target.
    - ... The real terrifying thought is just how intelligence-based their efforts are. They didn't expect us (and, potentially, the Lithophage). Really, the only true "killer" is the Nemesis, and it's... rare, clunky, and only dangerous up close. We're really just dealing with scouts and surveyors, and their (semi) recent attempt to confront us. If and when we see their actual soldiers... that thought gives me chills. Giant resource extractors, huge swarms that could give the Glyphids a run for their money... Either the Rivals are going to learn *how* to manufacture a better solider, or call in one, or *both* , and I don't know which one I'd prefer. (Though, witnessing an entire mechanical "ecosystem" at full force would be amazing... if it wasn't so eager to vaporize us.)
    - And yes, the Lithophage seems to have them... wary. I'm much more of a roboticist by passion than a biologist, so I don't know if the Lithophage could convert the same nano-alloys that compose the Rival's hulls, but... actually, I should stop there. The visual of an infected Caretaker is too horrifying to imagine, especially if CHX4 could actually learn how to manipulate electronics as well as it does organic nervous systems. Eugh. ... Actually, if they are an independent intelligence... maybe the meteor impacts scared them? Even a Caretaker wouldn't fare well with one of those dropping on them. They're panicked, like an animal hearing a gunshot. Once they collect themselves, maybe we'll see more of them again. That, or they're already plotting some sort of... "next phase", and I'm just being optimistic.
    Otherwise, thank *you* for such a concise summary! (Never would have even thought about their hull composition factoring in for their heat weakness.) I apologize for such a lengthy response, but these contraptions and their designs really do just fascinate me. I'd almost describe their designs as "artansial" if, y'know, they weren't as violent as the bugs. Point is, your appearances are always a treat, thank you for (hopefully) reading my own nerdy babbling, and I'm very interested in seeing you next time. :D

      About why bugs don't attack them, I suspect that rivals simply don't send vibrations into ground
      All of our equipment they attack (Doretta, pipelines, dwarves) send some sort of vibrations which attracts bugs
      Although, I don't know if hacksy makes any vibrations....
      Probably it's just gamer noises that attract them
      Besides that, rivals are machines, so it's obvious they don't emit pheromones, thus not being visible to glyphids unlikely to dwarves
      About the rest, I love those theories
      I kinda don't want to meet infected nemesis myself, or real soldiers of rivals. But we are dwarves, and we will defeat them with rocks and stones!

      I'm absolutely on board with the independent mechanical organism theory too! I loved the way you out it in terms of the Nemesis being an antibody type manifestation in response to us meddling. It just makes sense that the Rivals would be a learning entity capable of utilizing found materials and adapting on the fly to create new units as needed depending on the environment. Scary thought that they could have already used up entire star systems already before they found the Hoxxian system. Would explain why they're so unprepared right now, its likely the other places they've been have been cold barren rocks.

    Thanks once again for your contribution to DeepTube. Geological Survey and Supervision thanks you for the update on the Rivals, and a proper explanation on why we don’t have more stolen survey data.
    A fellow from R&D with a degree in metallurgical science does want to nitpick a bit. I’ll let him on the recording. (off mic) _lemme just shuffle over…_
    “Alright, so here’s the deal. The patterning on the Rival tech’s metal components is actually rather interesting. Given that these are all-terrain, all-temperature systems, they need some pretty unique convection techniques to properly vent heat out of their cores. What you’re seeing there is actually an extrusion of their circuits, which are very… Efficient with spatial use. The core of the machine is actually dedicated to battery storage since the Caretaker net only recharges in bursts for efficiency, as well as comms equipment to maintain connection. This is very juicy stuff, and the specific energy storage medium, one of my buddies told me, is actually a super-concentrated form of battery acid, since it’s rather easy to synthesise from existing geological samples. This acid, however, is extremely flammable, so the fire weakness comes from the thin slats of metal (which as before are direct cooling from the circuits) getting hot and passing it to the battery core, which overheats and explodes. Still, you got a good part of it right.”
    Thank you, Bill. (off mic) remember to get me the two-pack, OK?
    Now here’s the thing. Hoxxes IV is not very rich in silicon, at least from our survey data, so whatever blasted bots decided to drop stuff on our turf are gonna run out of computing strata eventually. They’ll use stuff like germanium to make it go further, but assuming that they came here under the assumption that Hoxxes had enough to keep themselves going, if we keep busting up the bots and (crucially) taking their data storage media, eventually they won’t have silicon to make computers with, and will kinda just fall apart. Now, that will take a monumental effort from the ground teams, but it’ll happen eventually.
    One more thing. We’ve had boatloads of data to sort through ever since the Rivals started prospecting for us, and that means that theoretically, we _could_ get a proper map of Hoxxes online, send down a superior force, and just establish a fortress while we pull motherloads of Nitra and Morkite outta the floor, but the Creature Studies wing of R&D did raise a fairly good point.
    If they’re making Dreadnoughts just because we’re doing expeditions, they’ll make Queens to break the fortresses. And Management wants this to go easy. We do not want to bring the forsaken mess that is a Queen back out of the Hives.
    That’s all for now. GSS thanks you again for the information.

    • @siirvend
      @siirvend  8 місяців тому +3

      If we could reserve engineer their systems well enough we could do much more than simply archive partial information from the data cubes/racks, I'm sure management would like that. Either I have drunk one too many rounds at the Abyss Bar or I encountered a super rare Rival, but I swear on Karl's grave when I first encountered the Nemesis on a Deep Dive it was like a giant mechanical worm, multiple segments that flow as a line through the air in unison like a snake seeking it's pray
    I have reported the sighting to DRG but the management and Ryan dismissed it as me getting too drunk even tho 8 rounds in a row is barely anything troubling and I had a clear mind during the dive
    Resulted in Ryan forcing me to have double the Nitra for a resupply and him also banning Lloyd from serving me any beer for next couple missions, disrespectful for my overtime on past missions
    Haven't encountered that thing since, but I wouldn't be surprised if Rivals would be preparing their next batch of bots while we fight the Rockpox, who knows they might just be upgrading the Caretaker facilities that are still left to make them more deadly, or repairing the failed ones cuz DRG never goes into the same cave twice

    My theory on the Nemesis' strange way of talking even in death is due to where at least I suspect it came from, it is in my belief that the rival company has found and captured Karl who had been spending his time after abandonment wandering the caves of Hoxxes harboring a bitter resentment for DRG a resentment he didnt fully agree with, it was a resentment that had been festering in the back of his mind nonetheless especially seeing how DRG was throwing dwarven lives to the wayside for their own financial gain, eventually being found and captured by the rival company and after probing his mind for any information that could be used to defeat DRG decided to manipulate his complicated feelings towards his former employer and mining brethren and exploit it for a new weapon intended for hunting down and exterminating DRG mining teams and who else better than a renowned greybeard? The rival company digitizing his consciousness and shackling it to the network responsible for controlling all Nemesis platforms on Hoxxes and though the firewalls designed to keep Karls mind contained has proved effective as of the current date it has been noted the Nemesis taking on Dwarven mannerisms both new and old

    It does feel like we were just at the tip of the iceberg with the rivals. The fact that some other faction sent these bots purposely to scope out the area makes me think it's not the end of things.
    The rockpox might be an accidental thing in comparison. I don't think the rivals anticipated this inorganic consuming virus would appear and why they went deeper. Can you imagine what kind of shit would happen if that virus gets into their circuits? I don't want shredder with rockpox swarming us dwarves.
    And this does make me wonder with this new update. The new crawlers are said to be DEEP in Hoxxes. Deeper then we ever thought. And if the rivals went deeper, will we see more bots in Rogue Core? What are we about to find that might explain the weirdness of the planet and possible residents? Cause ain't no way these bugs missed out on some humanoid entity and not try to wipe them out.

    Incredible video! Really like the theories. Id like to share my own if you dont mind.
    The rivals enter hoxxes via teleportation. Its how they spawn, they use phase bombs and teleportation is literally usable via the wormhole special beer. If it can be achieved via beer(albeit very unstable) then surely the tech is advanced enough to teleport rival fleets into the planet.
    Burst turrets mimic bet-c's firing pattern, no tracking. Like you said in the betc video, its designed to deal with threats that run in straight lines like the glyphids. The same goes for shield turrets and the bottom segment of the omen exterminator. This makes me believe turrets are designed to deal with the local wildlife and not dwarves who know to just step aside. Thats also explains why they dont do anything about the fire vulnerability, because its not needed against the primary target.
    The nemesis has 2 different voices. The voice to lure and when it dies are different from the one when it attacks. They also talk differently, "come and rescue me!" compared to "EXTERMINATE DWARF". The latter has no humanity, which is in interesting contrast that might have some implications.
    To add to your theory that the nemesis becomes a control center when needed, you didnt mention it spawns a bunch of phasebombs when destroyed. When it dies at an unintended moment it summons said phasebombs, but maybe when it dies"willingly" it instead summons turrets to protect it while it transforms into a new router.
    Regarding why the rivals are here, maybe they search for something deep in hoxxes? They have barely any interest in the planets minerals, especially now that theres less prospectors. If not hoxxes' minerals, it has to be knowledge theyre after with all the data cells they are collecting. Maybe they didnt go deeper into the planet because of the danger of rockpox, but to get closer to their goal?
    Thats all i got for now, might make another comment sometimes. Once again, amazing video! Looking forward to future content, have a great day!

    I may be late to the party, but I have the theory/head-canon that Rival Tech is run by Dark Elves/Drow. It’s implied by the drink Leaf Lover that DRG’s management is comprised of elves (leaf lover exists to please management) and this elven presence may also seep into RnD and the tech it makes-stuff like M.U.L.E.s and Bosco are dwarven made due to their impractical effectiveness but management still likely influences it. Dark Elves are a literal rivals to elves or in this case the company and due to making the murder robots, their long ears, and other elf traits making them rivals for the dwarves (leaf lovers). As well, dark elves are usually depicted as much more vicious and blood thirsty in fiction (see Dark Eldar for an example) so them making the Rival murder-bots.
    I also have the head-canon that the some of the voice lines of the Nemesis, “by god it’s full of stars” “I have seen things you dwarves wouldn’t believe” and “I see BET-C glitter in the dark,” are as the machine is dying, it’s manipulating code (what has it say stuff like “why couldn’t we be friends” to manipulate dwarves into dropping their guard and blowing up via phase bombs) disrupting and the AI’s conciseness taking control in its last moments as these lines seem like they would not guilt trip the dwarves.

    My personal theory for why the bugs and the Rivals don't interact with each other is noise. Any and all operations we conduct generate a lot of noise, from Doretta's drilling to the Refinery's burst pipe warnings attracting bugs. My theory is that the Rivals were likely collecting info on the bugs, observing that they use sound to communicate and hunt. This led the Rivals to develop their robots to be as low sound as possible, or having any sounds they do have be outside the bugs' frequency. Even then, I think an additional layer of "defense" for the Rivals is the armor. Nothing of our dwarven tech can damage the structure of the Rival bots, only specific weakpoints, so it stands to reason the same applies to the bugs. Maybe the bugs have recognized they can't damage the Rivals at all, and have effectively tuned them out, like the white noise of a fan.
    I also think the Rivals are highly optimized in most aspects, with the exception of heat. While it is much harder to set one alight, the moment a Rival bot does ignite it immediately shuts down or blows up. Their systems must be focused in dissipating as much of it as possible, too, as they only ignite under sustained heat, not short bursts of it.
    I will note, the Rivals have given us at least one cool thing: the Rival Tech framework for weapons. It's super cool to have glowing vents and floating elements, especially because weapon paintjobs have different colors for those glowing elements, too.

    • @siirvend
      @siirvend  8 місяців тому +2

  • @ultmateragnarok8376
    @ultmateragnarok8376 8 місяців тому +4

    Notable is the sound various rival tech makes. You touched on the very distinct noise their entrance always has, giving alert dwarves a moment of warning as the rivals' sensors figure out where they are, which is a great time to do the same and assess the situation as it's changed. The sound is a little distinct depending on size, but usually it's only easy to identify when a nemesis decides to crash the party, as the other sounds come in groups and sometimes in the middle of other combat. And phase bombs, of course, but those are much more predictable due to their sources.
    Turrets, mainly sniper turrets, make a varied humming sound when charging a shot. You'll usually hear this the moment that laser locks onto you, but it can be very helpful to know when the next round is coming without having to look and dodge it, though should you find yourself against a whole cluster of snipers it's better to just get behind something if at all possible. Patrol bots make a very similar sound when aiming their long-range shot, which combined with a similar laser seems to point to them using the exact same system, just crammed into a different shape, though it's interesting that they lack the visible expanding 'wings' that sniper turrets visibly charge up their projectiles with. Patrol bots also will make grumbling, almost grinding sounds when swapping from flight to ground modes, alongside a pretty hefty thunk of metal when they land to start rolling, as well as whenever they hit a dwarf. The counterpart of this is that their methods of defying gravity are far from quiet, emitting a constant high hum, which you can hear starting and stopping from a decent distance away as they swap between modes. Most obviously to a new observer, patrol bots will blare a short alarm right before launching their missiles, which alongside them shifting their components around can tell you exactly when you're about to take a guided explosive if you don't get moving. It's unclear why they actually do that, as it seems to largely be a weakness in this situation, but may imply them to be once intended for use alongside non-robotic forces.
    Prospectors make a whole load of sounds, some of which can be pretty fun to listen to - they actively learn on the field, so while they do run on sight the moment they see a team who's trying to kill them, they won't care if you approach them without firing first - though they also don't care about running into fire in the middle of a swarm and then calling in reinforcements when sitting in front of a firing gun gets them shot. The main noise to listen for in combat is the loud beeping tone they emit when they activate the shield, which while it resembles a sound signifying pain is more likely some form of audible portion of the distress signal, so any forces in hearing range will move to assist it. Even if you can't see it, that sound signifies that it's currently not worth shooting at it and that you need to turn your eyes and guns to the incoming patrol bots and shredders.
    The nemesis sounds both more and less familiar than anything else in the rivals' roster. Broken pieces of stolen speech aside, its propulsion makes a very easy to identify sound, audibly much lower - and less consistent - than other units, while the sound of one digging is not unlike the sound of any other large threat crushing the local environment to drag itself closer to you, though the nemesis remains unique among most of Hoxxes for being the only known threat that digs in combat to fly. Or, well, the only one with multiple sightings, rather than the rare one-offs the planet spits out every now and then. Other than identifying it before you see it - and before it sees you - it has only a couple notable sounds. The shields it fires are predictable, as it will always launch them in response to damage, but they're slow, bright, and big so identifying them by their loud sound is hardly necessary unless you're not looking at the giant death machine for.. whatever excuse you'd have for that. The nemesis will very loudly and passionately scream about the moment a dwarf gets in range, in a voice notably distinct from its lures, which can be a little helpful if you're trying to run, but by then it also may be too late. They always have the strangest things to say right before they die, though it may indeed be a lure - the idea of trying to communicate with this thing, right before it then bombs anyone who got close enough for the attempt.

    Mission Control has stated that the Rockpox Comet arrival & accuracy feels abit "too on the nose"... I think this was the Rivals playing literally dirty with a "dirty bomb". Not to mention other things happened just before Nemi appeared--there was a spike in Bulk encounters & dreadnaughts. Seriously, I had 3 Dread spawn in 3 separate missions in a row. I think Nemis moving around before they made themself known to up were waking them up; using the dwarf callouts no less to rill them up & hunt us down.
    There is one thing that worries me, one line--"I thought we were friends..." Why to I feel DRG made a contract deal & burned the bridge like Nintendo did to Sony so long ago..

      Imagine if Season 5, where we go ultra deep, connects with all that, plus the DRG Rogue Core game being developed.
      R&D found a way to counter and fully undo most of the damage Rockpox has caused, Morkite, their Geodes, when they begin spreading Morkite through the Cave system it buds from, is able to overrride the Rockpox entirely, and it nets a Tidy gain as well, what with the Rigs ever increasing need for Morkite on the daily uses.
      This was only found thanks to the teams sent to deal with the Core gone Rogue in the darkest Depths of those caves they needed to dig through to, and perhaps they found Rival presence seeping into there, a threat DRG wouldn't let pass, but with Rockpox still jeopardizing lower depth operations, the priority was get the Infection out of Hoxxes for good, while also establishing basic Logistical infrastructure to send in supplies and whatever else the Deepcore teams need to do their job and also repel Rival incursions into those Depths

    I don't think the rival robots appeared on Hoxxes IV because they were made there out of local materials. When a wave of rival drones spawns, they appear in a flash of light, as if they are teleported into the cave. I think the rivals have a huge teleporter in their home base that sends drones and equipment all the way to Hoxxes IV.

    "By god, it's full of stars!"
    ...this line scares me. I know it's probably supposed to, but... it really does feel like it's aware of itself. But what would a nemesis know of the stars? An artificial being created in darkness knowing nothing but cold metal, stone, and hatred. Perhaps, in its final moments, as it sends its final distress call, it recieves a message, its first and last glimpse of the sky thousands of meters above everything its ever known. And in its awe of the beauty it sees in the heavens, it can think of but one final message. "By god, it's full of stars."
    And then it summons phase bombs. Or maybe a nearby caretaker does that.

    • @siirvend
      @siirvend  8 місяців тому

      That line is especially odd and a bit sad. If they really are constructed underground on Hoxxes IV that means that it learns about the rest of the universe RIGHT before it dies. I also wonder if the bombs are called to destroy it to prevent us from learning more about them or to euthanize the unit outright.

    my personal theory is that the rival corp is composed of gnomes. elves wouldnt be concerned with hoxxes rocks at all, and goblins wouldnt make tech nearly as refined as what we see in game. gnomes, on the other hand, would definitely want the resources of hoxxes, whether it be for materials or for morkite. additionally, gnomes are too physically frail to go down there and do the mining themselves, but they do have the tinkering ability and hint of insanity to just engineer a few warcrimes to do the mining for them.

    I know that the elf theory is just a theory... A GAME THE-
    But it does make sense, if you look at DRG as a scifi interpretation of classic fantasy... Which it is...
    - "Rivals" of Dwarves
    - Technology is more sophisticated in looks and has more finesse, as opposed to dwarven practical, rough and sometimes duct-taped together
    - Isolationistic and refuse to communicate with others (Implied sense of superiority)
    - Do not get their hands dirty, prefering to send unmanned drones
    - The dichotomy between Send in manual laborers/Use remote drones is similar in philosophy to classic fantasy Dwarf physical/Elf magical
    - (Bonus about the technobabble) their "Specially constructed steel" could be a nod to Mythril or Elven steel
    They're very obviously elves, or at least "Precursors", a sci-fi archetype that is often based on elves
