I bought a Nizo 206 XL last year on eBay. My friends thought it was a brand new super 8 camera even though it was released in 1978. Germans are some of the best engineers on earth.
Great job on the video. Very informative about the history of Nizo. I owned a Nikon R10, Canon 1014 & a Beaulieu 4008 back in my film school daze in the 90s. Back then a technician at Super 8 Sound Company told me; Nizo's Super 8 Cameras were the most reliable. Is there a list of the many Nizo camera models specifications online somewhere to see which was the best to buy for MOS shooting?
@@soundelegy5987 great!! it would be interesting to learn about the features or special qualities of the braun nizos. or how to get the best picture or a certain effect out of it 🙌
Definitely. I felt I needed to do a little product history before diving into practical work. But I've been shooting with them lately so will certainly love to work on a simple an quick tutorial. Thank you for the input! Really appreciate it
@@soundelegy5987 the video is very nice for some background knowledge and makes me want to make a super 8 film. now i really want to use it :)) i actually FOUND a Nizo S 800 on the dumpster!!! the wheels for framerate and the other thing are stiff and the writing is mostly gone but the motor works! im so excited about this!! i have no idea how to make a decent film with this and there are no tutorials for it.. yet ;))
I recently got a Nizo 156 XL It still looks great so it was handled with care but the buttons on the side don't work right at all. First super 8 camera I bought that has such problems and I've bought many over the years. It probably needs a good clean but it doesn't look like it can be easily opened 😢
I bought a cheap s56, it was also almost dead. I opened it, cleaned everything and it started working like new. I'll film how I repaired it and post it on my UA-cam channel
Thank you for this well made and very informative video. I got hold today of a Nizo Integral 10 camera and although I see everywhere online that the Integral models are probably the least favorite Nizo's, I like the design, it works great (except the mic which I don't care about), its motor is so discreet while working and I can't wait to use it.
Thank you! And the Nizo integral cameras are great. The design is very innovative and yeah maybe the knobs are made from plastic but it gets the job done really well. Happy filming!
I owned both an Integral 5 and 7, plus I worked with a 6080 and I loved them all, but they were incredibly fragile, especially the Integrals. I'd be leery of buying one today because there are so few resources for repairing Super-8 cameras, and most repair shops in the US reject you out of hand if you mention you have a Nizo. Still, that Schneider glass and the crisp footage you can get out of them is making it really hard to resist...
My father's S8L is still around here, and it would work for sure. Batteries removed since long to avoid leakage. But using films with it - maybe for fun once (and I would have to use ektachrome rolls of course). Accessories are also there like single-image trigger and cinema light (yah 1000W halogen tube cinelamp that is a beam of a hell when on)
nice solid camera. I am not a fan of the tiny view finder. It makes focusing the picture harder to do and makes the overall experience a little less enjoyable than some other cameras. That being said it has some cool features so its definitely a camera in my collection that I will use for certain uses.
That's very true! It makes you work with the viewfinder pretty much next to your eyeballs which is not very pleasant and gives you less movement. It's a good point, thanks for sharing!
Got myself a Nizo 561 about two months ago. It works just fine. The only thing I would have preferred, would be a knob for setting the film sensitivity (ASA) manually. Perhaps with an automatic setting as well.
I would really appreciate a knob for ASA as well. I did shoot my S481 with 200T and 500T with decent results. Of course after a few rolls you start to get to know your camera but the price of film, development and scanning is so high that you really don't wanna waste any second cause of bad exposure.
@@soundelegy5987 I got a Bolex 8mm by mistake. It was sold as a 16mm. I kept it and now I have the ability to shoot 100 foot rolls. I got an old Soviet development tank and a roll of 100 ASA B/W film from Foma. After this investment, I hope I can shoot 8mm film at a lower price than super 8. I also got some old Russian super 8 cassettes. But haven't found anywhere to buy super 8 film in bulk yet...
That's very interesting. I would really like to know how it unfolds. I know other videographers who are also trying methods to cut down the costs to shoot super 8.
Thank you for the very informative video. For some reason my S800 will not fit into my tripod, it seems like the hole in the bottom of the handle is too large. Anything you would suggest? I've read some manuals online and it seems to suggest there is a way to adapt the tripod thread but frustratingly it doesn't say how?
Hey there! That's a tough one. Every tripod had a different lock-in mechanism and dimensions. There are tripods that are specific for Nizo cameras or else you should find the right piece to adapt your tripod to your Nizo camera. Unfortunately can't help you much without knowing which tripod you own.
Great movie! Congratulations to the author. Really interesting information and really in-depth. I have some super 8 cameras (Nikon, Zeiss, Canon, Beaulieu) and am thinking of getting a Nizo. I am concerned about comments here that Nizo has an unfriendly viewfinder. Is it really so tragic?
Thank you for the nice words! It depends on the model but it is true that is probably the weakest part of the camera and they work on very narrow perspectives. They are surely a lot of fun tho :)
I got a nice Nizo 136 on Sunday but then I realized it doesnt have the battery compartment screw door. I guess its going to be tough one to find this part
@@soundelegy5987 I found mine at thrift store. Heard Braun has good built quality and lasts quite good. Hopefully mine will do as well. The door is on its way to my mailbox so hopefully it will work
They're really sturdy and all the ones I got ended up working. Some models had a plastic retainer to hold the lock and that's quite fragile. Some repair shops swap it with a metal one for longer longevity. Good luck on your repair work 👍🏻
They are actually quite similar. Both have 1.8f lenses but the 148 goes from 8mm to 48mm while the S56 reaches from 7mm to 56mm. So you have a bit more reach with the S56. The 148 has only 18fps, 24fps and single frame yet the S65 has also 54fps option for slow motion. The S56 also has a 2 speeds manual zoom vs the single speed from the 148. I would go for the S56, seems to pack a bit more features.
Hi, I am a Norwegian art student, and I was wondering whether there was ever a refrigerator with Super 8mm Format recording capabilities? If it was designed by Herr Rams, that's even better, however what's most important to me is that the fridge keeps cold well as well as shooting quality video. Takk skal du ha!
Hello Anton. I applaud your curiosity. I've done a deep research into the matter and unfortunately I couldn't find a trace of such device. I've gone through the entire archive of Herr Rams creations but again no luck. Finally, I scrapped 8mm out of the equation and found a modern german fridge with a digital camera. It was built by Siemens in 2013 so it's almost vintage ua-cam.com/video/nDEDwlBeGSc/v-deo.html What's particular about it is that it only takes pictures inside the fridge. Not outside.
