    Also... The ZEF charger in this video included a $5 connection fee which is a bit ridiculous to be honest. Going forward I would probably only use those in a pinch or if I needed a full charge which would be rare as it was only a 50kW charger. With Electrify America I pay a $4/mo membership fee which then gives me around $0.31/kWh compared to the normal $0.43/kWh. You can check the Plugshare app to see what charges accompany any chargers by tapping the Info button.

    I got one of those CCS adapters from Harumio and they are well made and work fine. The locking pin on the Tesla side seems susceptible to damage so be careful with it. It does take a firm push to attach the adapter to the CCS cable from the charge station so keep at it until you hear it click. In my town there are no Tesla Superchargers but there are 2 chargepoint stalls running 250kW over either a CCS or a CHaDemo cable and they seem to work fine. I normally charge at home and am having a 220V outlet installed to up the charge rate from the very slow 110V.Thanks Bryan for your road trip videos and tips on camping and exploring out of the way places. A tip as you will likely use EA chargers a lot. If it fails to start charging then ignore the EA directions and initiate charging on the app first before plugging in the car. To save time and avoid problems most veteran EA users will initiate the charger then plug in rather than the other way around. If a session fails and you call EA customer support that’s usually the first thing they have you try

I've been using my Model Y 2021 with the CCS adapter and I've had no issues with connecting the CCS adapter with the cord to the car prior to opening the app. I've ran into awkward situations where I'm able to charge as other people tell me that station doesn't work.

Different handle design but same protocol. And if handshakes with chargers faster and more successfully than competitor cars do. I think it’s because Tesla just has better EV and software engineers than the OEMs have.

    • @bryanhauer

      They’re definitely more expensive. I think around $0.41-0.45. Hey John - I noticed it was now reporting offline too in Plugshare. That is one of the major problems with these 3rd party chargers... many of them are always broken or offline and sometimes it's weeks or more before they're fixed. Currently Tesla has the only robust and dependable charging network in the US. Hope more companies can figure it out. There's a huge space to make a ton of money there if one of them can figure out how to offer a lot of reliable chargers.

    I am wondering if you guys have different Tesla connections over there, my car Model Y has a built-in CCS connector so no adapter is needed. Do you have an older connection or are they just different over there

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  Рік тому

      In the US we have the original Tesla connector that is much smaller but still provides high speeds currently up to 250 kW with higher speeds coming soon. In the rest of the world specifically Europe you guys use CCS as the standard and have forced Tesla to use that there even though it’s huge compared to what we use. Same thing happened with Apple and the Lightning cable. Seems they like setting standards even if it’s not always the best choice. Because Tesla has a proprietary connection (they were the first to build one in scale) the other EV manufacturers here in the US decided to also use CCS. My guess is to make things easier around the world. Tesla US will switch too.

      That way cars can pull in front or back if needed and each spot between can be used. Luckily Tesla is adding many more charging stations weekly so should be even better coverage as they expand. These EA's are nice when they work. Hey Bryan, can you explain what other tester stations are saying about the 3rd party charging? I think they all say you have to pre-condition before going to a 3rd party or it will be slow. Maybe the 50 Kw was not accurate. You didn’t precondition, prior to arrival. I think if you had, you may have seen faster charging. If not explain when I’m supposed to pre-condition.

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  Рік тому +1

      Hi NiaG - Unfortunately you can't pre-condition a Tesla before going to a 3rd party charger although it is a feature they're rumored to be adding in the future. There's currently no way to do that besides just driving there. I had already been driving for about an hour so the battery was pretty warmed up. Currently you can only pre-condition when going to a Tesla Supercharger. You could do a workaround if you put in a nearby Supercharger so the car thinks it's going there, but if there's already a Supercharger nearby you may as well just go there. Only time I could see doing this would be if there was a long wait at a Supercharger, but a 3rd party fast charger really close by.
      Pre-conditioning only really benefits you if the battery is cold due to non-use or cold weather. Neither of those were relevant here.
      At this ZEF charger I was getting 43kW out of 50kW with 53% charge. That's pretty good and to be expected.
      I should also add that pre-conditioning is only needed for fast charging above 150kW. It doesn't do much for anything else like this 50kW one or home charging.
      Hope that helps! Appreciate the comment 😀

      @@bryanhauer Thanks Bryan, I didn’t want to be the deliverer of bad news when you said, if you have been driving you don’t have to pre-condition. I was told by Tesla Techs, that statement wasn’t accurate. It is why, when I’m driving cross country, after driving for 4 hours, the car starts to pre-condition, as I get close to the Tesla Charging station. At least, now with the new release, we can go to CCS stations, and do the right thing by pre-conditioning and seeing that quicker charging paces! Try it and see if you get better charging rates when you do pre-condition.

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  Рік тому

I was 100% correct when I said it didn't currently allow for preconditioning (3rd party) until the most recent update. Your Tesla has always automatically preconditioned for charging on Tesla Superchargers when you select a Supercharger on the map and drive to it.

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  Рік тому

      I believe it's newer Model 3 & Y's (think 2021 & 2022 outside of a couple months in late 2021 where they didn't include the hardware needed.) Best way is to just check you car by going to Quick Controls --> Software --> Additional Vehicle Information & look to see if it says CCS Adapter Support Enabled. If it doesn't, your vehicle doesn't contain the hardware required, but Tesla has stated they will likely offer a retrofit upgrade at some point in the future. Remember the adapter isn't officially even out yet here in America so this will probably take some time. Here's some more info: insideevs.com/news/556623/newer-model3y-tesla-ccs1-adapter/

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  Рік тому

      Correct. The $5 connection fee at ZEF makes it only worthwhile if you're charging fully or in a pinch. For the video I just wanted to show how it worked, but you're correct. Not a very cheap option if you're just getting a little charge. As for the Electrify America charger... I pay $4/mo and then $0.31/kWh which is discounted over the normal $0.43kWH.

      @@bryanhauer I think it would be smart for any charging station company to offer Tesla connection without the adapter EA rates cheaper than Tesla during the peak rates at either of their rates and only .03 more than their off peak rates so a viable option anytime especially since I see them empty everywhere and some more convenient than superchargers where I live in California

    Model 3 in Oz have CCS built into car. Don’t understand why US would be different

    • @bryanhauer
      @bryanhauer  Рік тому

      Hey Peter - It all started because when Tesla (a US company) first got going many years ago when there wasn't a worldwide standard for EV charging, so they created one. Over the years and specifically in recent years as more companies moved into the space the industry decided on CCS (but remember there was Chademo before that).
      Now there are some advantages to CCS over Tesla's "proprietary" plug like overall speed it theoretically can put out, but there's also disadvantage like size. In the end Tesla created the initial standard, but the rest of the world went a different route. It's very similar to the Lightning cable from Apple used for iPhone's vs Android and the rest of the world deciding on USB-C. In that case Apple is now moving their products over to the industry standard as well.
      In the end I think having standards throughout the world makes sense, but not everyone can always agree on what they should be. I mean look at AC wall outlets. North America has different wall outlets than Europe and most of the rest of the world and that's been going on for a very long time.

      Agree. Some of these smaller regional chargers are out of their minds with the connection fee. I assume all that will change as more competition emerges. Luckily most of these are in small towns and not on major highways so are t used very often.

I hope Aptera and Tesla can make their charger standardized because ... seriously what is that monstrosity. !!!

I've lived quite a few of the last 10 years like a nomad so having a long-term home base during the summer in MN (my favorite place to be in the world during the summer) is extremely important to me at this point of my life. I'll be building a luxury modern lake home run off of solar & wind and have plans to include one or two small cabins to rent out on the property as well. I'm super excited about it. They have to license the tech for the charger from Tesla as it's proprietary. Luckily since it's been a while Tesla has gotten many other companies like Ford, GM and Rivian to do just that and start using the Tesla standard.
