- alright in this video i will show you how to make straight lines when landscaping or building. You can use this trick all the time, whether you're building a fence, deck, or just trying to dominate the neighbor with crisp landscaped edge. There is a single formula that you need to use, but don't worry i'll show you a shortcut that requires zero math! just remember 3, 4, 5, or any multiples of those those numbers.

I have one question, how do you know that side A is parallel to the road at which sides you're placing the posts? Or that B is parallel to the other road that appears in the backgrond?

But how do you know thta the A line is straight?
Straight or parallel? It’s a string line pulled tight so it’s going to be straight, if you mean parallel and in this case I was wanting it parallel to my driveway edge, I just measured and placed both stakes at the same distance from the driveway edge. I would venture to say they are with in 1/4” and close enough that you wouldn’t notice any deviation by eye. Hope that makes sense and answers your question. 👍🏻

Don't know if this is a silly question or if I just missed it, but how did you know the first striaght edge was striaght ? The first line I mean
No not a silly at all, and is a great question. I made sure to measure off my driveways edge when driving in the 2 stakes for the first string line. By doing this I knew that first line was parallel with my driveways edge, or in other words straight, relative to my driveway. In this application that’s what I was trying to accomplish. 👍🏻 I hope that makes sense.

If you don’t have anything to measure off, I’d say at that point you can establish your own straight line with stakes and string line. 👍🏻

This is kinda misleading. Dude really made a plumb bob mark at both sides A and B and then used a tape measure and object on the ground to mark the end of side C. I had to watch a couple times to really understand, not everyone will. The entirety of Side A does not equal 6 FT, he marked it somewhere in between, the same goes for side B, such that the continuation of the square line B lined up with line C is also a straight line, perpendicular to the drive way path.

I’ll have to re-watch to see what you are talking about. At the end of the day it’s just 3-4-5… or any multiples, I’m not trying to pull a fast one on anyone. If either the adjacent side equals 3 and the opposite equals 4 or vise versa the hypotenuse will equal 5.
I was confused too until i read this comment by the guy above. It makes it seem like the first line is 6 feet entirely because of the yellow line spanning the entire length between the first two stakes as opposed to only highlighting up to the 6 foot mark on the string. Then i also thought for a while that the second string (b) was an 8 foot long string. So when you introduced the plumb bob at 8 feet I felt lost because I assumed youd place a bob at the end of the string ( assuming the graphic highlights the length of eight feet). Makes sense now 😅 but was thoroughly confused for a bit.
