There's another _tip/trick/feature_ for and during sieges, albeit a small one & quite niche (more often than not, it may not be that important to take notice): using your units' shields against enemy projectiles, for that marginal extra protection.
When facing an enemy settlement for siege, on the battlemap, it is safer for your soldiers when moving to face the walls, its towers, and enemy units, on their left side with the shields. It doesn't have to be a specific tactical formation like the testudo.
Same rule applies when infiltrating the settlement and you couldn't bother capturing the towers, you'll need to move on the left side inside settlements for those shields to work against the towers and/or enemy units shooting from above.
If you move your units, _outside_ settlements, on the left side of the map, they'll be more easily mowed down by enemy projectiles. Similarly yet inverse, when you move on the right side, _inside_ settlements, the towers & other enemy units will benefit from a hidden extra damage buff because your units are holding their shields on their left arm while they're being shot at, from their right side, where they're exposed.
I haven't done the math how it works with your soldiers' total defence points against wall towers' attack points (+the differences between wall levels), or other units' missile weapons, but I know it works.
I don't know if you can rotate your units without having to change their formation if somebody wants to test on battlemaps, between various units, if shields are the biggest, hidden, game changer or not.
It'd be curious to find out if an urban cohort unit can be beaten by a simple early legionary unit, just by deflecting their projectile missiles, facing on the right side, protecting them with the shield, before charging & fighting melee.
Again though, I don't know if you can rotate units without having to drag with the mouse and lose their initial formation.

Oh indeed! I think I discuss the basics of this in my 'Rome is better than you think' video. But you're right, in a siege this detail can be huuuge!
I should bring it up in a short video and experiment. Thanks for the tips!

Holding ctrl + left/right arrow keys rotates units while maintaining their original formation. Alternatively, you can also use the up and down keys to increase/decrease a unit's rank as well. Hopefully that helps.

I enjoy defending the barbarian cities. The hills make for a fun difference in siege gameplay.

I wish that Northern European cultures do get to build stone walls. We have plenty of archaeological evidence that the so called barbarians were capable of building substantial fortified stone structures for a long time and that they were doing it before Rome existed.

One of my mod videos does have a get around to fix that but I do agree that its much better in Barbarian Invasion when you can get barbarian walls.

Place your siege equipment near the entrance/side you want to take, then drop the equipment. Place all your troops on some entrance further away. The AI defender will place all their wall defenders on the wall in front of your troops. When battle starts, move your army around the city to your equipment (giving time to refresh energy) and take undefended walls. The wall defenders won't move until after you have begun moving troops into the city or even wait until you approach the city square. If you manage to take a towerless wall section, you can get your entire army in the city and archers on the wall (preferably along the path the AI will take when it finally abandons the walls to get you) without losing a single man. When the AI wall defenders come off the wall, they tend to head toward the plaza and then toward your men. If you take the walls along their shortest path to the city center (but don't get so close to them on the walls that they pursue you on the wall) they will walk by walls you have already taken and within range of your archers you smartly placed along their path on the walls - getting absolutely wiped out without any loses on your part. This will leave you just that one or two defending groups that stay in the square to deal with.

awesome.. using siege towers pushed by archers to line the walls once you have taken them is a favorite tactic of mine. Also an army with siege engines gives you a broader range of tactical options, the siege engines are used to destroy towers that are in the way of your chosen entry point.

Haha! Thank you so much for the shift attack option. It always annoyed me having them break formation to converge. More noticeable in barbarian factions with masses compared to elite armies with fewer units!
    Love it!
    Cheers mate!

1:10 - This is very important both for sneakily capturing the walls without engaging the enemy when you're attacking, but also vitally important when you're defending. The AI will engage nearby units when it scales the walls. But if it doesn't see anyone, it will capture a gate, climb down, and never climb the walls again unless you recapture the gate. So hold a single unit back, away from their ladders and towers, and it can stroll along the walls once the enemy gets down to street level, putting every tower along their way in your hands.
(You can also recapture the gate if the enemy army is particularly large and you need to separate it into manageable chunks)
7:00 - If you want to outright cheese \ cheat - go into battle alongside your allies and withdraw. They will lose the battle. A bit too lame for me, but maybe you really want to capture the settlement without fighting your allies...

I always use siege towers, wait for them to sally forth and let the towers take care of them lol, very balanced game.

When you said you need a fast running unit to take the walls to avoid huge losses, I couldn't help but notice that OTHER peasant unit icon that showed THEY were taking huge losses, what did you have THEM doing? 😆

U can also just quit the battle right before ur ally wins and all the casualties they caused and did to the ai stay the same but you get a chance to then take the settle meant or just keep messing them up

Hey, a little off topic but do you know any good tutorial on creating 2D art for either Rome or Medieval 2? I think about buildings mostly. I wanna create some nice 2d icons but I have no idea where to start.

Another great video! I’m actually thinking about getting Rome tw but idk whether to get the remastered or the original one :/ anyone got any advice?

    • @ToNerdistoHumanTNH
      @ToNerdistoHumanTNH  Рік тому +1

I personally play the original. In part, much of that is to do with UI and controls. If you never played the original then those gripes will probably be of no notice to you.
The Remastered has (almost) all factions playable, whereas the original needs simple modding... you can find videos for that here ;)
I don't think you can go wrong either way! Enjoy.

I would get the remastered version, better graphics and doesn’t have the annoying bug where RTW stutters on modern hardware despite low graphics settings. Otherwise it’s almost identical
