    This is it... I waited two long weeks, but today I opened up the Italian hive to see if Queen Balboa's daughter was laying eggs. At the end of the inspection, I was swarmed with robber bees and had to close things up quickly.

    That queen cup will be for a stand by, and the others queen cups for the spring swarm. So be ready to do at least a small split in spring so you'll have at least 2 Balboa hives! Very cool, so glad Balboa offspring worked out better! I would feed syrup and pollen substitute if possible, so they will keep raising brood until the coldness of winter shuts them down. You'll have stronger hives in spring if they go into winters cold with more bees.

      I'm going in tomorrow and will be starting the fall feeding and condensing the boxes a bit. I'm hoping they continue to build for the next few weeks. We are still quite warm here for the near future. I REALLY want to do some splits next spring if these hives make it. Thanks!

    Love the videos! Not sure if you're familiar with Homesteading youtube channel "Appalachia's Homestead" but on there they've just started with bees, but her bee keeping mentor recommended that when putting the boxes back on, that instead of just placing them on top of each other, its better to start at one corner and slowly slide the boxes in to place, that way if any bees are on the edges of the box you just brush them off rather than risk squishing them.

    I watched the whole series and this was such a satisfying outcome! You made a hive mind very happy by waiting it out! You have a true blood successor which will be much stronger for the original hive than a re-queened queen. Watch those robbers, though!

  • @DreamofaHive
    @DreamofaHive 7 років тому +9

    Good move removing those queen cups! She should ramp up the laying ...they are probably still thinking about supersedure just because it IS a big hive, but that should calm down pretty soon. Do you still have drones around or have they been kicked out since the major flow stopped? When you go in next just make sure you consolidate brood nest frames i.e. have major honey frames on the outside and the frames where they have brood (or have prepared laying space) in the rest, particularly in the second box from the bottom as that will be the warmer box away from any cold draughts from the entrance. You will start to experience a drop off in bee numbers caused by the broodless period, and that is also probably limiting how much she can lay as she needs younger bees to feed larvae, but don't panic as her first brood should be hatching next week and will give her more resources to cope with more egg laying. A small tip to help avoid robbing when there is honey around ...take some clean tea-towels out with you next time and cover the boxes you remove ...it conserves the heat and stops robbers getting the scent. I usually also cover most of the frames in the box that I am looking through for the same reason. Great job Balboa 2 ....very fabulous looking queen :) Looking forward to spring splits :) Great video as usual!

      DreamofaHive Good tip about the towels. I had heard that somewhere else and forgot about it. Today is consolidation day. I'm heading up there to reduce the hives and probably start feeding a little syrup. Thanks for the great comment!

    Love the videos. So involved with your hives I have learnt a great deal from your experiences. So pleased to see the brood. I hate robbers!! I had problems for a few days in mid September and put a gauze bee escape on and reduced the entrance to half an inch until the robbers gave up. I had thousands of bees on the hive one day, a few hundred the next then they left as the girls defended well. Now I hope they over winter as this is my first. They seem to have enough stores so the robbing didn't seem to hinder them.

    • @vinofarm

    Have you had any trouble with mites this season? I had them but I treated and I will be testing again this weekend.
    Ciao!

    • @vinofarm
      @vinofarm  7 років тому +2

      The robbing happens occasionally. I just shut down the gates and the robbers disperse in about 30 minutes. I have seen no evidence of mites on the Russians. Nothing dropped on the mite boards at all. The Italians were broodless for 5 weeks in the middle of the mite ramp-up season, so I think that interrupted the mite cycle perfectly. I was going to do a test a few weeks ago, but I accidentally tore up a bunch of drone cells and saw no mites at all in any cells. I'm going in tomorrow so I might do a test to be sure. I'm hearing it's a minimal mite season this year.

    • @BrandonsBees

    Why not use a queen excluder to keep the queen in the brood box? This allows the nectar to become honey in the second box or shallow super giving her room below to lay below and the frames won't used for nectar storage. Katie.

    • @vinofarm
      @vinofarm  6 років тому

      This particular situation was a hive I was trying to build up from almost nothing in the spring. They were a softball sized cluster but they survived the winter so I wanted to save them. I just fed them and nursed them all season. Not a production hive. I let the queen lay as much as she wanted. The queen wound up dying and the colony re-queened themselves and this hive is now the strongest hive in my bee yard.

    I'm not sure if you've considered this but most beekeepers have their Apiaries inspected once a year. These inspectors are a wealth of knowledge as they are our local (college educated) bee officials here in the Commonwealth, they are very attuned with what's going on in our region with everyone's hives, they WANT you to succeed in repopulating bees AND they are happy to answer questions and offer EXPERT advice as opposed to vague guesses on UA-cam. It could help give you some definite direction going forward. Here's the link for our local inspectors.

    Hi there, I love watching your videos so much. I would like to donate some money towards new batteries or equipment because I love watching your content. Is there any method you use or prefer for this? Please let me know it would be fantastic if I could contribute to your hives!

    • @vinofarm
      @vinofarm  7 років тому +1

      Casey Hastings This is very sweet of you. I'm not set up for donations at this point but there are two easy ways you can support the channel.
      1. Just watch the videos! (Without an ad blocker, of course) and more importantly, comment, like and SHARE the videos. Every little bit helps. The revenue from UA-cam is pretty minuscule, but it is growing in the right direction. Growing a UA-cam channel just takes eyeballs watching and interacting with the videos. Tell your friends!
      2. Click one of the Amazon links in the description and go shopping! If you buy anything (not just the things linked... anything at all) after clicking one of those links, I will get a small percentage of the sale as commission from Amazon. It doesn't cost you anything or change your shopping experience. You just need to enter Amazon through those links. This is also a tiny revenue source, but it does add up and will eventually go straight into gear for the channel. What I make from Amazon will go right back to the Amazon electronics department.
      I am doing this as a hobby because there's no way a channel my size could support a person, but like I said, I'm trying to grow. Someday, maybe next year(?) the channel will start to pay for itself but right now, I'm just trying to learn the ropes, improve the videos, get feedback and slowly increase the audience.
      The best thing you can do is keep watching and tell a friend!
      Thanks again for this nice comment.

I'd love to do this full time, but there's the rest of my life, family, work, etc. UA-cam is a blast, but with my size channel, it's just got to fit in when I have 'free' time.
