  • The weather has turned the corner and the bees are ramping up for an actual spring flow! I've never had bees DURING a spring flow before and this year is looking very positive. I decide to add new brood boxes to the Italians and reverse hive boxes on the Russians. This is a very exciting time!

    You looking great with your bees! Just some friendly advice, Don't split until your hives until mid to late June. This will allow for maximum build up and a great time for a brood brake, "Natural Varro control". Also it will maximize your honey production for the spring. Then you can split, treat for pests, and prepare for the fall honey flow. Splitting a new package early rarely ends with a good outcome. You may end up with two week hives going into winter. Glad to see all is good. Good luck!!

    Hi Jim. If you haven't already, you should check out Devan Rawn's videos on single brood box hives. You could throw on an excluder and your flow frames, giving your bees more room and something to work on. This season I'm keeping two single 5-frame deep hives. Two weeks ago I added exluders and flow frames and they're already about 1/3rd the way through finishing and filling them!

      Rockburn I did that with mine last year (in the high desert of central oregon) and regret that I did. The queen had no place to lay and I think that lead to a hive that was too small to make it thru winter. I think what Jim did here makes sense.

    Hey man,
    I just want to say, I know you are only fairly new to beekeeping but you are my go to for watching beekeeping videos. Watching you and 1 other youtube got me into beekeeping. We are going into winter at the end of this month. But the 1 hive I have has made about 50ish kg of honey. I'm selling the honey to start another 1-2 more hives in spring

    When you have big time burr comb in the shim it's time to super up. Something that might help is that when you have a lid full of comb and bees like that lean it against the entrance where it touches the bottom board and smoke it hard. The bees run in and then you can scrape the burr comb of safely without killing lots of bees. I do it that way because you really can't tell if the queen is hiding in between some comb. Usually not but better safe than sorry.

    • @vinofarm
      @vinofarm  6 років тому

      I had some fondant on top of the frames when I installed them three weeks ago. I needed the shim there to cover the fondant. In just two weeks, they took ALL the fondant and built up that comb. They don't have a shim now. It was temporary. I added the new brood box to keep them busy and allow them to grow. I plan to drop on a medium super this weekend as our flow is just beginning. I was very careful lifting up that comb!

    would have left the insulated caps and solar wall there for a while longer - I found that all mine have slowed down as soon as I took off the black tar paper and added more boxes. - something about cooling things off and expanding space. - perhaps too much all at once. I'm in same spot 20 miles east of you. but time for splits by end of the month for sure. I have double nucs too. - nucs are an amazing hot beds - incubators - makes sense - get them into nuc boxes - you'll grow faster.

    Jim, your new hive is looking good. Don't be afraid to split it. I installed a carni nuc 2 weeks ago. I started the 5 frame nuc in double 10 frame deeps (with already drawn Combs), she's laid 9 total frames (not including the nuc frames she came with). Ill split that hive in another couple weeks. On your extra honey frames.... Is it sugar water honey or actual nectar? Maybe just put them in the bulkhead where it's cool and save them for the dearth. It'll give the bees what they need during it till your golden rod blooms. We don't have GR in Idaho. Just a thought. I have about 15 frames of capped sugar water I pulled out that I'm saving for the late summer months. Cheers.

    • @vinofarm
      @vinofarm  6 років тому

      Thanks for the advice. I believe that honey in the Russian hive is all goldenrod. There are about 5 or 6 solid frames. Some of it might be crystalized. After I make up my splits, I'm sure most of it will be accounted for. Great to hear your bees are doing well!

    In regards to splits, you really need to ask yourself what your goals are going into your next winter and also what you want for honey yield this season. If you want honey, just focus on keeping the three hives you have from swarming by providing adequate space early. Just keep ahead of them, super early. Neither of your overwintered hives look like they are even considering swarming yet (in terms of population). If you want more colonies, then start splitting. Split your overwintered stock pretty hard (meaning, take a healthy amount of bees with parent queens in your splits and move to a separate location). I would not split your package unless your goal is simply more hives. I would make that a production colony. Just keep supering!Also, you may end up with a moisture problem in your "balboa hive" using that board on the end to make up for the box difference. If I was doing that, I would have just transferred your medium frames to the deep box. you may end up with some comb drawn off the bottoms of the frames, but you can slowly replace those frames as the colony develops.

    • @vinofarm
      @vinofarm  6 років тому

      This year's goal is to learn to split hives and go into next winter with as many strong hives as possible. I'm also going to try overwintering nucs if I can (a la Michael Palmer). Honey is not the goal, but I'm hoping to add medium supers for a couple weeks to try to get a taste of spring honey before I start splitting. I've never seen spring honey! As for the Balboa hive, I was thinking she'd move up into the deep relatively soon and I'd be able to take the Frankenhive apart before summer. I just want the main brood boxes to all be deeps.

    • @isedhooah3683
      @isedhooah3683 6 років тому

      Understood. I use the MP method as well for overwintering nucs. In that case, I would make your splits sooner rather than later (depending on if you are ordering queens or letting them raise their own can influence that timing). I'm in southern PA, and I made my "winter" splits last week which I will let open mate (I have more colonies than you do however). I will probably make splits again later in the spring/summer depending on the flow(s) this year. I use 4X4 double nucs like Palmer, as well as some 5X5 double nucs. I try to build them to at least 2 deeps, i.e. 8 and 10 frames each side respectively before my early summer flow, then I add a QE and super them in common. After the summer flow, I add a third deep and start feeding to let them build up for winter. As always, it really just depends on your flows, how prolific your queens are and your treatment schedules that will inevitably lead to your success come next spring. Best of luck, I will enjoy watching your videos!

    • @isedhooah3683
      @isedhooah3683 6 років тому

      Recommendation, once your queen moves up into the deep on the Balboa hive, put a queen excluder between that lower medium and your deep to keep her from moving back down. Make sure you have an upper entrance, otherwise drones won't be able to exit. Once all the brood hatches from the medium, then pull it and lose the QE.

But, man, you had me marathoning all your bee videos in 24hs. You rock. I had a lot of fun, and who knew? I actually find bees a lot more interesting now. And I would have never guessed that they are kind of friendly and kinda let you mess a little in their hive without attacking you that much (I know you have gear, but they could be swarming all around your face and they don’t do that very much). I liked this very much! Definitely subscribed!

  • @TheOregonOutlaw
    @TheOregonOutlaw 6 років тому

    Get at LEAST six "additional" 8 frame Deep boxes ready - start transitioning as you SHOULD well have a minimum of 6 very full hives by fall.
    As to HONEY - start saving up several which are full as a wintering over food source and also to assist (only if needed) when you so decide to make a split. With the numbers of bees present, it's going to be expand the number of hives of watch them swarm elsewhere.
    Going to all deep 8 frames allows for easier management (save your back) and yet offers sufficient support your colder climate as you can also condense the numbers if needed without a mich-mash of different sizes to work. Once the upcoming flows start in earnest - enjoy your new found wealth and for FUN - ship a couple 4-6 Oz jars to viewers!!!
    Best of Luck PS - Mites ARE the Enemy of Hive Health at all times! ZERO TOLERANCE!

    Hey, your hives look great. In your last year Russian hive I would take that queen cup out. It seems like you are about a month behind weather wise then I am here and I have a hive that looked just like that Russian hive a month ago. I pulled frames and made three nucs. Then it still looked swarm ready after all of the brood emerged. So I found the queen, pulled her out with four more frames and tons of bees. That hive swarmed last weekend about two weeks after pulling the queen. I went back in found most of the empty frames I had put in built out and a virgin queen, pulled her for a nuc, and pulled out three more queens that were about to emerge. I run 10 frame, and have that hive sitting with eight built frames on the bottom, ten empty frames above it, and a new virgin queen as of this morning. I don't know where there are getting the bees, but that hive I still my most active hive in the yard. So, I guess what I am saying is that cup looks like they intend on using it , and it is better to split before the get too much of an idea to swarm. Cheers

    I think the difference with the bees this year is a combination of you starting the new hive earlier this year than the others and also the fact that the first hive had no wax only empty frames. It takes 4 lbs of honey or syrup about 1/2 gallon to draw 1lb of wax. this is about 2 deep frames.

    hey vino farm it's nice to see your colonies doing well , if I was in your place I would wait until I put a second box over the new package of bees cause if there are cold nights or you get a week of cold weather the bees tend to cluster and if u have many brood frames those will freeze , just give them drawn comb on the first box and wait to have 6or 7 brood frames and then go to a second box ,they built that birr comb there cause they don't like building too much on plastic ,

    • @vinofarm
      @vinofarm  6 років тому

      There were 6 brood frames out of 8 frames in that hive. That brood is going to be hatching over this week and they seemed ready to expand. The nights have not been very cold and the flow is about to begin.

    • @P_Chalou
      @P_Chalou 6 років тому

      I tend to add space frame by frame when there is still danger for a cold night. For example you could add 4 frames and have 6 up and 6 down. You can put styrofoam at the end of the frames to limit space. I believe tight hives are more efficient too, as bees won't wander in empty frames, clean them etc. I give them only the frames they can cover. Keep up the good work.

      I've noticed the designs have changed a bit since I bought them three years ago. It's basically the same thing. I wish the vented jacket came with a square veil, but I had to buy it separate. I never liked the fencing veil. I've seen knockoff vented jackets a lot lately, but I believe the UltraBreeze is the original. Shop around if you want... that link is the most consistent route to a solid product, but there are definitely others.

      Plan is to expand. Honey is not the goal this year, but I DO want to try getting a little spring honey while it's coming in over the next couple weeks. I've never experienced a spring flow. Another great video! Have a question as a first year bee keeper. My two packages I installed back on May 27th as of today are jam packed out in 2 10 frame deeps. Do you think I should add a ten frame medium for space for now, then when they pack that out the put the excluder and the start the medium honey supers? Sorry long question, I thought of even making another box from both and doing a walk away split but would loose 30 days production, or just order one...any insight would be appreciated!

    • @vinofarm
      @vinofarm  6 років тому +2

      Phillip LaMaire I don't know where you are or what your climate and/or flow situation is but if you have two 10 frame deeps full, you should certainly add a super for space. If you know you have a flow coming up, maybe add two. In my climate, the next week or so is that latest time I could try doing a split and safely letting them requeen. You might be different.

  • @garrettjohnsonyt

    It's probably not the solar wall. It's probably a very favorable spring, one that had a clear start in very early May. No fits & starts to stress the colony, they woke up at the proper time and didn't waste energy when there was no nectar around.
    8:18 "There's a lot of drones, and there's a queen cup on this frame." That is a YELLOW FLAG. Time to find the queen, and more importantly find out if she's got a decent brood pattern. Was there open brood in that hive, or just a queen puttering around in the Russian hive? That cell looked like an emergency cell, but I can't be sure. I also can't tell if it was chewed out or never finished. The Russian colony might be superseding.
    Regarding splitting, the best time to split is right now, just before the flow. You want the bees rebuilding during the flow, and that is also when there are likely to be lots of drones flying for the virgin queen to mate with during her rumspringa. Remember it takes 16 days from the day the egg's laid to raise a queen, usually 14-15 from the date of the split. I wouldn't split the package. I'd split the Italians, who have successfully overwintered in your environment. Of course all this assumes you're not just buying a queen. I'd rather get as much feral genetics into your colonies as possible, but YMMV.

    • @vinofarm
      @vinofarm  6 років тому +1

      The Russian queen looked fine. All last year, the Russians had constant queen cups on the frames. It's a thing they do. This cup was empty. I'll have a look this weekend to be sure, but I've learned not to get to alarmed at Russian queen cups. Splitting before the flow seems a bit hasty... There aren't many drones out yet. The ones on the brood frames are not born yet. I will talk to my local mentor, but I had a feeling the splits would happen right after the flow in late May.

    • @garrettjohnsonyt
      @garrettjohnsonyt 6 років тому

      Well it sounds like you're going to try to let the colony raise their own queen, so you've got that going for ya. Feral drones are going to be carrying acclimatized genes and will likely be more hygienic, at least, than that colony you found last fall that was lousy with Varroa. Those drones are present because they're survivors.

I don't know how into Twitter I'll get but I just want to learn to use it. Facebook is really frustrating to post on because out of 300 or so followers we had, only about 25 people would see things when we posted. They don't serve posts to everyone following you. It's just not worth the time. UA-cam and Instagram go well together.

If you are... what are you're prevention methods? I don't have any 8 frame yet, but if my mentor that does 8 frames gives me a hand-me-down, I'm curious if there is more to it than what you showed. Many thanks.

    Why do you change to 8 frame and not put a 10 frame deep on top of balboa? Or dont 10 frame deeps exist?

    • @vinofarm
      @vinofarm  6 років тому +1

      10 deeps do exist, but my plan is to standardize all my brood boxes to 8 frame deeps so things are interchangeable between all the hives. I have a lot more 8 frame equipment. The Balboa hive was inherited and they came in those boxes. I just never had the chance to transition them. This is the first time in two seasons that they've been strong enough and the timing has been right.

    Why do you use 8 frame instead of 10 frame box?

    • @vinofarm
      @vinofarm  6 років тому +3

      HonzaJ several reasons, but the main one being that I have almost entirely 8 frame equipment and I want to standardize my brood boxes so frames are shareable when needed.
      8 frame boxes are lighter when full. They fill up faster which is good for our short season. And they may be better in winter for the cluster to navigate when things are freezing cold for months. It's easier to access honey across 8 frames than 10. It's also a tighter space to keep warm.

    Love the videos. I recommend planting a fencerow with flowering vine. Especially repeating bloomers like some varieties of Clematis. The bees love it and you can have a tax deductible 'cattle feed' to boot if you run bees even as a small business. Making beautiful gardens helps everyone! FYI for ALL beekeepers! Carolina Jessamine is POISONOUS to bees and people! Star Jasmine captures a bees proboscous and WILL NOT LET IT GO! Avoid these two vines! Since you seem to understand mathematics...........provide a roof......one that gives light at the middle of autumn to the middle of spring.....shade during the hot months........use the azimuth of the sun as to where to place the roof. It gives bees a more manageable temperature during summer months especially and makes the best cured honey.

    I'm seeing some high activity in my hives in SE MA as well. Spent about a week and a half fixing bad comb placement and getting them onto the new foundation frames. As for crediting the solar wall I'm not so sure. I have 3 hives in this - a.co/aaL1j4T and have very similar results right now. My 3 hives all started as packages this year so the amount of activity I'm seeing is impressive to say the least and they've only been in the hives for about a month.
