- The heat is on this week outside...and also in my kitchen. If you don't like to hear me talk or ask you questions or watch the making of unmeasured biscuits, this one might not be for you. There's also a refresher of how I clean my cast iron skillets, because y'all have asked. No matter what, we'll be raking, rolling and chopping silage before long. Until then...here you go. 🙃

Oh my land Meredith. Mother Nature is off her meds! It's hot here too in Indiana. Heat index through the roof. Too hot to cook, love your channel and it remind me of home in Eastern Oregon with all the down home goodness.
Yes, Mother Nature is being nuts :P It's crazy hot here, too. Supposed to hopefully get rain and relief Sunday or Monday. Here's hoping!

A great cook really doesn't measure what they use that what my grandmother use to say.and yes lard is the best for baking. I remember making lard as a kid cause we butchered are own hogs. Today was 93 with a heat index of 116 so it's just plain hot. Cast iron skillet are the best way to cook or bake. Keep up the great videos

Wisconsin is wet again. 2 inches yesterday and its thundering now at midnight. I gotta try some buscuits. Lard was a big item growing up but i dont hear much about it anymore since the healthy eating push over the years. Enjoy your vids very much

Meredith, keep doing what you're doing with the channel! Just film what naturally happens on that North Carolina Farm, kids playing in the creek, baling hay, feeding calves, baking it's all good! Some youtube channels are trying to be Hollywood and "stage" their content, but real life is better, just my two cents!

Try some fried apple pies. Dont cheat and use canned apples. You gotta get the dried ones and reconstitute them. My Grandmother used to make them when I was little and I'd eat them until I was sick. I miss Granny's cooking.
I miss those my Granny made them, too. They were my favorite!
I confess to being mildly disappointed with the cupcakes not being baked in the cast iron skillet. you should be able to do that, right? and I'll go ahead and admit, I'm not allowed much unsupervised time in the kitchen here at home... :)

Hi Meredith. Wow how do you fit everything in in a day or a week. My old Mum rarely measured but she was a Wizz in the kitchen..fed 4 kids and herself and Dad no problemo. I love all your vids especially with all the family and dog. I come from family of 10, 3 sisters & 7 brothers & raised on a small 100 acre farm. My Dad sold beef hogs & tobacco we were poor but rich. we wore hand me down clothes from cousins. Dad had a 520 & 420 JD tractors with equipment to match. we always ate supper after dark that was the end of our work day. Mom would can 3-400 qts green beans 400 qts mater juice, jellies & frozen veggies with no ac just a fan and a cold rag on her head. Both are gone and I miss em all the time, I still live in the home place, the farm was sold in the 70s for $75,000. Now worth $700,000 farmed by big farm family who put out 25,000 acres. Enough of my rambling. Keep up your Great work. Doug in Ky.

Sorry m late. The heat was on here to in Holland. Expecting 3 super heat days, over 100F. I like more between 62 and 63. Everything more is hot for me. Hm close to the ac is nice :) I see you"re used to it with all that cooking. That must be hot in your cooking barn :( Oh i see a big sealing fan in ur kitchen. But although. I have been wondering how the cattle are doing on the whole-grain barley compared with when you put it through Mrs Gehl.
I, personally, have found that the whole-grain is not digested fully, which indicates waste.
I love your vlogs. I am alone and watch them long into the night.

Flour , Milk / Buttermilk sounds a bit like an English / Aussie Scones
Did you know CRISCO was first made to make candles with, since LARD was considered food, folks used tallow to make candles with, and realized they would run short for cooking later on in the winter, PLUS some people figured out that plants have a certain amount of fat, that would burn as candles if processed right, so CRISCO was born, , later on yet, another person figured out crisco was a plant based product, and actually could be consumed as food, that was probly about the time gas lights, or electric was making a debut, and thats a little history lesson .. use lard for pie crusts and biscuits. crisco for door hinges and window slides..

My wife to be is from eastern NC. Im from Western NC. The way y'all cook is different from how we cook here. So I told her that her tater salad wasnt like my mom made it. Wow she was plum mad for days.

Yeah. To clean that metal skillet you boil water in it. And then you coat it with oil. Nice it works well how you did it.

I use steel wool, but most importantly, I do it while it's still hot. Dry it and hang/store it. That and paper plates equals no dishes after supper...

cold start some people like to see how good something starts in the cold I live in Michigan so people ask that a lot so when its winter start somethings that been sitting some and the people that like that will stuck to the screen lol diesels seem to be the fav just thought I help you out there your husband make like getting on that guys love starting things maybe its in our blood lol.

we are in a heat warning here in Michigan till 8pm Saturday night. with a feels like temp 110 only in the 70s starting Monday for about 3 days. you and the kids stay cool and hope for the rain you need.

I just ran across you one day and y'all brought back so many memories of when I was growing up... I continued to watch because you seem to have a good Christian attitude, The world needs more families who work together, and Love each other... I was so impressed your husband takes the time to teach your son how to do things, He reminds me so much of my uncle... I would give anything to go back and never leave the Farm.. Weve never used butter milk. Always eggs, butter,milk and meat. Prices over the past year has gone up! N for all dont leave it in water that shit will rust. Rusted pan momma was pissed and I'm lookin for a new one. Didnt know about oil to keep it rust free n ready thank y'all. Mom has alzheimers so I'm trying. I've been a protector for so long that I've lost what weve been fighting for...life.
