I simply cannot get enough of Gavin Hoey's videos. Very well done and explained extremely well. My photography has improved leaps and bounds by what his videos have taught me.
Gavin, I've been following your videos for maybe a year and I learned more with you than in the past 3 years. With this video I finally understood the function of the HSS. Your videos are the best of this channel. Thanks and I'll be waiting for your next video.
Thanks Gavin, I'm a complete novice but always enjoy your videos. You have a great style and personality for teaching, I always find them entertaining.
I very much enjoy your tutorials. You and your beautiful model were well prepared for this series of photos. She had the right clothing accessories for the photos with the head covering and the jacket which go back to an earlier period in aviation history. Well done!
Gavin, I've always loved your tutorials and have been watching for years. I thought you had a great sense of humor because I thought your last line was "Adorama, the store that has everything but us photographers." Today I saw what you really say. Still love your presentations.
I love these photos, they're perfect. And I love high speed sync too. When I discovered it myself I felt like my photography World had opened wide! Great work as always Gav.
Thank you for sharing. That was an excellent, informative explanation and demonstration of how to use HSS! Beautiful model and fantastic pictures! Thank you!
Very informative explanation on how camera/flash manufacturers incorporate controls to modify FP shutter function and allow for shooting in contrasty conditions.
Love the shots you created with HSS! Beautiful results! Wonderful video to help us understand, thank you. I just shot a job last week with HSS for the first time. It was a poolside photoshoot. I used the same lights, thankfully my Dad who has been a pro photographer since the 60s had the same light you are using so I could borrow his, he is the one that told me I needed HSS for the job.
That was the best explanation of high speed sync that I've seen. Gavin does an excellent job of simplifying what everybody else over complicates. Great photos as well!
I pretty much never turn high speed sync off. It's such a powerful tool when working with flash. Oh, and it also helps a great deal to have a model like that when taking photos. I refer to the planes of course. ;)
A great explanation in an easy-to-understand format...classic Gavin Hoey ;-) I would like to point out, for those who are new to photography, that a camera with a base ISO of 200 is not an ideal starting point, sure, you can use an ND4 filter to lose two stops of light if you don't have HSS flash available to you but if your camera has a lower base ISO then that will also reduce the exposure. I'm fortunate that I can drop my camera's ISO to 50 (two stops lower than 200). As for ND filters, they definitely have their place but quality ones are not cheap and a Yongnuo YN568 EX II flash (HSS and TTL) with a pair of transceivers can be bought for the same price as three decent ND filters.
Not sure about ISO200 cameras not being not ideal, I seemed to cope just fine ;) The Olympus E-M1 Mark ii that I use will drop to ISO 64 but the bottom line is, if it works for you... it works ;)
I finally tried HSS outside in the bright sunlight. I took exposure of the background first with the camera on Manual mode, flash setting off, minimum aperture, minimum ISO, and shutter speed according to get proper exposure of the background. Then I turned the flash on to manual mode at full power, turned on the wireless flash controller and set it on H.S.S., enabled flash firing ON in my camera and took a picture. I did not underexpose the background 1-2 stops though. It is not good if you have a tiny flash to use, like speedlights. I had a portable strobe light that has a big battery, so no worry about quick drainage of the battery. But heavy to carry around though.
Oh ho ho ho! So simple, and so beautiful! Now I wanna grab my camera, get somebody in costume, and go out to an air museum. I officially have a photo itch! I love it!
Gavin, I've been shooting consistently for the past 2 years and although, like many, starting on a minimal budget and using my Nikon D7100 (crop sensor camera)...hard to find anyone demonstrating High Speed Sync with any crop sensor camera, I've learned so much from you. You show how having a minimal budget and space to work in can still produce great shots. I shoot portraiture and street photography and REALLY am looking to up my game. I'll be purchasing the Flashpoint equivalent in the U.S. (Godox) Xplorer 600 very shortly and this video has been a tremendous help for me and seeing your use of costume/props. Please keep up the good work and tutorial videos. Huie Dinwiddie
Another great T&M video Gavin. Great explanation of HSS for viewers new to that concept. Great showing them the "underexpose the background by 1-2 stops' concept to ensure the ratios are proper to make the best portraits. Keep it up. One of my all time fave series.
Great stuff Gavin. I have been using Flashpoint gear and just got the trigger for my Olympus stuff. Been following you for a few years but love that you are showing how you can get great results using Olympus.
Your explanation of how HSS works is mostly right and applies generally to "speedlights" (multiflash) and a few full size strobes. Most bigger strobes cheat this be using a long "burn time" that exceeds the shutter speed. You can tell they're using this trick if HSS is only supported at or above a certain power level. I'm not sure if the AD600 does this or not.
Those shots are just yummy. like the soft look of the focus and color depth, that hair is beautiful. That light and light box is too big for me to go camping with. Nice Job.
Gavin Hoey, One of the greatest teacher of photography in UA-cam, thanks for your sharing
Awesome shots!! Her red hair really stands out in the portraits nicely. Well done, as usual, Gavin!
Gavin Hoey is my favorite teacher, the way he explain is simple, well structured with clear voice.
I learn a lot from him
Thank you so much

I very much enjoy your tutorials. You and your beautiful model were well prepared for this series of photos. She had the right clothing accessories for the photos with the head covering and the jacket which go back to an earlier period in aviation history. Well done!
Adorama and Gavin make a great team. I've learned more from them than from the couple of photography courses I took in college many years ago.
Gavin ALWAYS nails it. Thanks Gavin
This is very nice.Gavin doing a shoot outside and accompanied by the so lovely Kerry.
Gavin, I've always loved your tutorials and have been watching for years. I thought you had a great sense of humor because I thought your last line was "Adorama, the store that has everything but us photographers." Today I saw what you really say. Still love your presentations.
Excellent tutorial. Not realised HSS even played a part, now so looking forward to getting to grips with using HSS.
Well explained! And gorgeous photography
I love these photos, they're perfect. And I love high speed sync too. When I discovered it myself I felt like my photography World had opened wide! Great work as always Gav.

Great photos as well!
Thanks for the kind words :)
I pretty much never turn high speed sync off. It's such a powerful tool when working with flash. Oh, and it also helps a great deal to have a model like that when taking photos. I refer to the planes of course. ;)
Best vid on HSS I've found! Great illustration of how the sync works by fast flashes as the shutter curtain moves. 5 Stars!

Oh ho ho ho! So simple, and so beautiful! Now I wanna grab my camera, get somebody in costume, and go out to an air museum. I officially have a photo itch! I love it!
That's the best thing you could say Steve :)
Gavin makes it so simple to try this yourself. Great vid.
Ahh, is that how HSS work? Thanks Gavin. As always easy to absorb your amiable teacing approach.

Just ordered two AD200 as Godox has released the X1T-O trigger (used Canon-Triggers in manual mode or the FT16 before). Can't wait to try them out.
Very nice - you always make it understandable. And I appreciate your enthusiasm.
Brilliant Gavin! Thanks for sharing. Awesome pictures, beautiful model, and great knowledge about that cool technique. You set the bar high!
Terrific, thank you! I'm an Olympus EM1ii user too, and there are relatively few instructional videos using this camera, so I extra appreciate it.
Some stunning images Gavin.... Another great how to Video
Another great T&M video Gavin. Great explanation of HSS for viewers new to that concept. Great showing them the "underexpose the background by 1-2 stops' concept to ensure the ratios are proper to make the best portraits. Keep it up. One of my all time fave series.

I'm pretty sure the Xpolor600 doesn't do tail sync but either way it's to hear I'm mostly right on this one Jim :)
Those shots are just yummy. like the soft look of the focus and color depth, that hair is beautiful. That light and light box is too big for me to go camping with. Nice Job.
