My theory is that the stalker “loved” the narrator so much that he couldn’t bring himself to actually act out what he had planned to do (maybe why he never actually took him previously) so he took the next best thing. This story KILLS me, I always feel sick when I think about it. So naturally I watched this entire video.

Oh man great video. I’ve been putting off reading Penpal for a WHILE but getting this notification finally got me to crack it last night. Five star read. Definitely thought it was his dad the whole time and was constantly let down by that if it was the twist. When that didn’t turn out to be the case I was really pleasantly surprised.
So recently, I picked up an old Polaroid camera. It was in a thrift shop for like $3, unverified operating conditions. I'm a fan of vintage photography, and I've always loved the charm of Polaroids, but never saw the sense in buying these new ones that are hundreds of dollars. Anyways, I digress.
I got home and researched what film I needed, ordered a pack, and in a few days, it was on my front porch. Excitedly, I opened the film and loaded it into my camera. My toddler son was shadowing me, so I decided to take his picture first. When I popped the shutter button, the camera worked perfectly, dispensing the film slide with a mechanical WRRRRRR, following by the clicking of the shutter resetting itself.
I haven't thought about this story since CreepCast covered it, but as soon as I heard that, it literally sent a chill down my spine. I remembered Pen Pal, and how the kids are arguing about the sound they hear in the woods. It sounded like a robot.
Anyway, I'm now selling a nice Polaroid if anyone wants one.
Great video, especially with the analysis at the end. In the most complimentary way possible, this felt like watching Wendigoon. Keep up the great work!

also just a tiny correction, the narrator wasn't present when josh's body was discovered and only found out later, which makes it even more tragic imo

Thanks for watching! Yeah I hadn’t read Penpal in years before I watched Creepcast do it and was pleasantly surprised at how great it still is. I was worried it was another Jeff the Killer situation but I’m glad it was just as terrifying as I remembered it being.
ok i just tried to listen to this audiobook prior to watching your vid and accidentally downloaded a romance novel with the same name.. didnt realize until an hour in, i'm crying
In my early teens I sneaked out of my house and went for a walk around the neighborhood. It was the middle of the night. I was walking down the street when I saw a car coming. Being that I was a kid, alone on a dark street I thought I was going to get in trouble so I quickly jumped into some large shrubs. Me and my friends used to play in these bushes because they were dense on the outside but large and open inside. If you’re familiar with pittosporum shrubs then this will make sense. When the car got closer it stopped and the driver got out. At this point I was as quiet as I could be. I thought it might be a police officer but I also thought it could be a guy with bad intentions. They never said anything and I couldn’t see them through the foliage. I just kneeled there hoping they would give up. I dont know how long the person stood there but eventually they got back in and drove off. I went straight home and never sneaked out again.
You described that little vignette from your childhood towards the end very well - def creeped me out. You’re a great writer, man.
Love Penpal, happy to see it get the recognition it deserves nowadays.

Even though josh was scared and being stalked when he came over to the narrators birthday he still went out to the woods to continue the first thing that made them close ughhhh sobbing 😭♥️
I feel like the stalked loves the narrator so much he couldn't bring himself to kill him so he took the "next best thing" because josh looks like the narrator and the narrator loves him🥲
