    As a Westerner (from Spain) I was well acquainted with many of the names, books, and US institutions, etc that Mr Malhotra has mentioned: Paul Tillich, J. Campbell, Heinrich Zimmer (great and credible Indologist), TM, the Bollinger Series - many of which I have read. Having immersed myself in Advait Vedanta for the past 20 years I consider myself fortunate in having discovered the lucid and important work of RM. Early on I realised the distortions and unclaimed borrowings of Freud and Jung from Indian sources. In my experience, however, things are raìdly changing in the West (at least for the past 10 yrs or more).Apart from Buddhism there is a growing interest in Advaita: new translations and publications, like Advaita.Info in Spain. I congratulate you all for having such a powerful and true teacher in your mist.

    People interested in Indian psychology can look up 'Jadunath Sinha'. He wrote 3 volumes on Indian psychology in 1930s which are freely available for download today. It's mind blowing work that draws parallels with western psychology at the time and highlights western vs oriental differences in concepts. Sadly, his name is unknown because his thesis on history of Indian philosophy was stolen by his thesis reviewer and published as his own. He even filed a case in Calcutta high court against him but the reviewer went on to become a very powerful political personality. His name :Dr. Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan.

      as far as spiritual aspects are concerned i never really trusted any western sources because they all come with an agenda of establishing fake western superiority.

    Having lived in the West all my life (as an MD and a student of Philosophy) I was fortunate in not having fallen for the water-downed or distorted views of Eastern philosophy and spirituality that Rajiv Ji speaks about. Often I realised that something was wrong, something missing as to the sources (like in the case of Jung, Freud, Joseph Campbell, etc.). Many years ago I wrote a short article ('What do we mean by Health?') in a Canadian Medical journal basing myself chiefly on Aristotle and the Bhagavad Gita. That was the beginning of my interest in India and Hindu philosophy. Would that I had discovered Rajiv's work and publications much earlier!

      Actually did you know that Hindu philosophy influenced ancient greeks as well ? For more than 2000 years, the western world has TRANSLATED AND DIGESTED Indian works and they are now called western works. I would like to share a lot with you, if u r interested (I hope u r, coz u need to spread the word about India and its achievements).

    I have been studying Rig Veda for quite sometime now...
    I don't have the words to describe this feeling of betrayal
    It's not just conciousness but cosmology, string theory, Unified field theory etc etc... Every thing originated, developed and matured from the digestion of Vedas .
    Sir,
    I'm glad that you are doing something to preserve our knowledge.
    Your teachings will someday in the future help the Indians who have forsaken their identity, realise that by the virtue of their birth they are part of something greater than all the west combined.
    Your lectures will become the guiding light for the next generation of Indians who seek enlightenment and knowledge.
    Also, It's my humble request that you publically state how the west copied the principles of unified field theory from Rig Veda.
    Michio kaku an eminent scientist in this field second to Stephen Hawking, is also doing the same process of digestion of Rig Veda
    And he has indirectly influenced many physicists of this era.
    Sir, please make a video on this also

    I do wish I'd heard this 20 years ago. I am a Westerner. Deep gratitude for your work and for this lecture. It has taken me decades to come finally to authentic dharma. I recognize the truth of these words. Thank you. And it is so ironic that people like Stephen Batchelor have done so much harm in the name of authenticity. Others here have concealed the door to authenticity in ways that are just as harmful.

    Applause to each and every word of yours! I´m delighted to hear and see your videos. May your efforts to mentally "de-colonialise" the minds of Indians be blessed by the Gods and bring rich fruit soon. Indian culture is so very superior to any other culture. But still then Indians are sometimes not aware of that and are happy to copy Western clothing, thinking, behavior, even though it is inferior. It´s sad. Even the elite of the country sometimes runs away to USA and other countries. All this has to be reversed. I really appreciate your never ending efforts for Bharat. Daniavad.

    I really sometimes worry how our concept of indian thought is converging because from last decade or so westerners are more curious about our heritage and knowledge than us and in their journey they r more likely to come across these modified/digested concept of indian thought than original or pure. Even IIT is suffering from craving for Western acceptance problem. Even I thought when watching devtdutt on TV that at least someone has taken initiative to convert our ancestral knowledge to simple terms...and I bought 'My Gita'. Then youtubing devtdutt I found Rajiv sir vedio on debunking devdutt ideologies and my little bubble shattered. Now I can see how we feel it's fashionable to call ourselves atheist and discarding our traditions as superstition. We've been denied our true syllabus in our education systems....but now with Rajiv sir I feel empowered and hopeful for Future.

    This is a brilliant lecture. I did not know about Sassure's Patanjali connection. We read Jung and Freud in undergrad in psychology courses,. Neither in India nor abroad any connection to Hinduism was mentioned. This is such an eye opener. And thanks for clarifying Digestion vs. appropriation. Although its been explained in your book, many people watching this will understand. Digestion then also leads to falsification of knowledge because if you are using only half a knowledge --without understanding its roots, you will never be able to implement it in its entirety as it was meant to. Half-baked results, based on half-baked understanding will then lead to believing that knowledge is not valuable.

    There is a comment asking God for long life for Rajivji. I wish Rajivji long life and good health so that he can continue his amazing work.
    However, great personalities come only once in an epoch. Sri Rama, Sri Krishna, Vyasa, Valmiki, Buddha, Vivekananda, and many other great personalities blessed India and the Sanathana Dharma. What we do with their creations and teachings is equally important. Their teachings are not merely for listening with pleasure and pride.
    Young people should follow Sri Malhotra’s lead and undertake the work he has begun. They should become his disciples and start schools that continue the work he has been doing. Most others should follow the tenets he has been suggesting. Those with good funds should help his efforts and the future work of those who follow his line of work.

It is quite disturbing to assimilate the fact that our knowledge of and contributions to mind sciences have been appropriated. Its high time we studied OUR history and realized WHO we really are to defend and champion Bharath dharma tradition. Jai Hind!

    I am a medical graduate and I always used to wonder why there is a strong similarity between Sigmund Freud’s theory(I’d, ego, and super-ego)and Bhagwan Gita’s updesh on how to control mind by Krishna . Now I got the answer, there must be huge possibility that Freud borrowed this from Gita because except for this part Freud’s work on psychiatry is indifferent however he was a great researcher and was a great neurologist. It’s really sad that all those psychologists and psychiatrists visits Freud’s house in Vienna and London without acknowledging their own heritage. Have to ever wondered that all those great Jewish researchers including Einstein and Oppenheimer acknowledged Bhagwan Gita ?

    Totally agree with Rajiv ji,
    Pattern in which Cristina institute work is 3 generation concept, which they did in South America to convert the South American native.
    In first generation they ask people to practice Cristina along with their native believe .
    In second generation they dilute native belief system and in third generation native belief is totally demanised .
    I have seen lot of Western people who talk about Yoga starting with india reference and then try to dilute Hindu contribution .
    And try to manipulate our history according to Cristina conspiracy then after that in conclusion they says that Hindu philosophy and system is confusing and disguising and try to stablish their Cristina idology
    Unfortunately lot Hindu gurus ,politicians, industrial people and academic people in India Knowing or unknowingly help these people to get petty benefits from Western contries

    Hi Malhotra Sir, I follow your video blog and I have added you to my linkedin as well, 4-5 years back. I usually don't comment but this article of your is the best. I have this feeling that Vipassana was one of your early influences, and maybe one strong reason why you probably might have devoted yourself to the cause of Indian sciences/ Indian culture /Indian grand narrative. If my guess is true then it completely makes sense that one day or next you would talk about Indian culture's contribution to the field of psychology. Being medical doctor and biomedical scientist, I am familiar with the field of psychology/ psychiatry, and I always felt that why we in mainstream medical syllabus we don't think about indigenous methods of understanding psychology. My intention in such thinking was why not have some contribution from Indian voices in the field of psychology. But what you suggest here is far deeper than that. YOu let us know that how central and deep is India's contribution to the psychology ( albeit completely un-acknowledged). Few months back I commented on one of science related seminar you or iswadeshi indology conference posted, I mentioned there what c.k. raju thinks, he talks about india's immense contribution in the field of mathematics. Here you talk about psychology ( very central and very deep contribution, not the sidenote/ footnote, not the also ran contribution but the central). And as c.k. raju tells further , that because western understanding of mathematics is not good enough, this is preventing them from doing good mathematics. I feel the same way related to psychology, as western understanding is borrowed one, without acknolwedging and understanding original sources, their psychology science is not good enough. And you talk this with very important examples in this lecture. I feel that this was the best lecture of yours.

    • @mnpkk
      @mnpkk 6 років тому +1

      Also, among the galaxy of western psychologists/ philosophers who borrowed from eastern philosophy, I want to add one more name. This professor's name is mihaly csikzentmihaly. He talks about the concept of FLOW. If one probes it bit deeper this is the same concept as Tao. But he doesnot acknoledge it atll. Flow is about deep concentration, as is traditionally required for practicing archery/ martial art/ calligraphy/ painting etc. One would be able to reach such deep states, by following traditional instructions far better than what csikzentmihaly suggest....as I feel after reading his book and also reading dao de jing and comparing them. The traditional approach has understood the CRUX of the matters. Mihaly CSikzentmihaly has NOT got it. He turned out to be another superficial borrower, who didnot acknolwedge, who distorted what he borrowed, and who didnot get the core understanding.

    • @mnpkk
      @mnpkk 6 років тому +1

      so for me now the rule of thumb is....if you heard some new psychology school, try to understand which eastern source / eastern conept they borrowed from, and then TRUST very little what they are mumbling, instead return to the original source.

    • @mnpkk
      @mnpkk 6 років тому

      this applies to mathematics, ayurvedic medicine, organic farming science, psycology, philosophy and many more fields. Many of the bigshot names who borrowed heavily from eastern source were just armchair thinkers, who just read some translated books, and if atall they visited eastern world they just dropped there like helicopter reporters and send some brief time. THey don't get the depth of many of the matters at hand atall. SUch superficial arrogant approach prevents them from getting it.

  • @MrWarriorspirit
    @MrWarriorspirit 6 років тому +6

    I really look forward to this book. I have known that the development of Modern psychology was deeply derived from Yoga and Buddhism, because as a student of Philosophy I was aware of the history and movement of ideas. It started with Arthur Schropenhauer, who was a direct influence on Freud and William James and Jung, the first wave of psychology. The latest(fourth) wave of CBT/DBT/ACT is more directly based on Indic thought. In other words, Indic thought is responsible not only for the birth of modern psychology but also its continuous development.
    BUT
    In science it does not really matter where you get your ideas from to develop your theories. It did not matter to mathematicians that Ramanjuna got his theory from a goddess in a dream, or to physicists that Schrodinger mined his thoughts from Yoga, Samkhya and Vedanta --- what matters is your hypothesis testable? Does it explain the current and the past data? Does it make predictions? Unfortunately, Indian people failed to exploit their own knowledge resources to do that, partly because they did not appreciate it themselves and Western people did. This has been going on for centuries now and it is happening today. The founder of Hotmail could not find appreciation for his ideas, so he had to go outside of India where they would be appreciated.
    Yoga Nidra has been around for centuries, and India has been free since 1947, so why didn't an Indian psychologist come up with 'Lucid dreaming' first -- meaning turn it into a scientific theory. The same goes for 'Relaxation response' why didn't an Indian psychologist do it first? You actually see a pattern in how this knowledge appropriation happens -- it is usually some nice unassuming guru from India that goes to the West with our ideas or they come to India and learn in our traditional ashrams. But the ideas themselves are presented in the format of religion, spirituality or well being, then Western scientists recognise worth in those ideas, and then turn it into a scientific theory. They just don't straight up plagiarise the ideas, they convert those ideas into the language of science(and or mathematics) and turn into their own contribution.
    I am sorry but India has just missed the bus on the field of modern scientific psychology up until its fourth wave of psychology. All the pioneering work has been done in the West by Western scientists. The work they have contributed will not suddenly just become invalid if it is discovered it was all lifted from India. But that does not mean that the future of psychology cannot be done in India by Indian people. If Indian people start to appreciate their own knowledge and can turn it into science, India will be leading the new 5th wave in psychology.
    I suggest Mr Malhotra, though I am sure you already on it, start pitching these ideas to Indian psychologists working in the field of scientific psychology and fill the lacuna that Western psychologists have left --- there is still a lot of ideas in India that the West is failing to validate or legitimate in Mainstream Science --- the subtle body, siddhis, reincarnation, the theory of unfoldment of evolution, Akashic field, cosmic consciousness. Build alliances with the fringe transpersonal psychologists in the West, get the Indian government to fund research in Indian universities in all these areas and co-opt them too, get the yogis, swamis and sanyasis all to join in --- and the 5th wave will be an Indian wave.

    • @MrWarriorspirit
      @MrWarriorspirit 6 років тому +1

      I agree it would be nice if they acknowledge their sources, and in some cases they have, but what you need to understand here is most of them do not wholesale lift the ideas from Indian sources, they turn it into a scientific hypothesis and then it becomes a theory. This is how they end up taking the credit.
      The point I am making Indian scientists can do it before a Western scientist does it, and there are still a lot of ideas that can be scientifically translated. Unfortunately, and I think Malhotra will agree, Indian scientists only start taking Indian knowledge seriously when Western people do it first.
      I would like to see leading, cutting edge research in India, by Indian scientists using our Indian knowledge.

    Westerner mind can be described closely with following verse.
    दुर्योधन उवाच ।
    जानामि धर्मम् न च मे प्रवृत्ति:, जानाम्यधर्मम् न च मे निवृत्ति:
    "I know what is dharma, yet I cannot get myself to follow it! I know what is adharma, yet I cannot retire from it!
    Next line is famous hindi saying "oolta chor Kotwal ko Datein". Duryodhana blaming Krishna back for his adharma.
    त्वया हृषीकेश हृदिस्थितेन यथा नियुक्तोस्मि तथा करोमि
    "O Lord of the senses! You dwelt in my heart and I will do as you impel me to do."
