    A little bit late here but I just got into the 6mm using American Civil War miniatures. Very nice work you do. Yes the small figure are tedious, but I like the fact I can do so many of them in a single evening or weekend. Gaming at this scale really opens up the big battles for play, in my case Antietam, Gettysburg etc. Thanks for posting the videos and hope all is still going well! 👍

    Love the figures, you've based them very well. I bet they're a beauty to see on the table.

    Gaaah! Dammit Ringo, you fiend!! There I was, minding my own business and then you go an show me some 6mm - and now I have the dreaded, accursed "6mm Fever" again! Now I have to go upstairs and dig out my Seven Years War Modeno city-state troops!
    Great video, and really amazing how you base your troops to represent heavier/lighter, or regular/irregular troops - it emphasizes the "weight" and style of the various troops.

      Colour of the Gods You know you want to really! Don't blame me LOL. The basing, I just think it looks more interesting and identifiablt from afar

    Great overview. DBA 3 basing seems the same as the earlier additions. I have not noted any changes yet

    • @RingoSimpkinsUK
      @RingoSimpkinsUK  9 років тому

      pbeccas They have made the 15mm base depth optional for 3Blade elements etc, so now you can have them on 4 x 2 OR 4x1.5 bases .. thats the only realy basing difference I've spotted

    That was a great watch and very informative. Got me thinking about using 6mm for my Civil War big battles and using the 28mm for smaller skirmishes. Baccus do a very nice army bundle for under £100 that is larger than all the 28's I have painted so far! Oh dear, guess my Christmas money is spoken for...Ian

      TheDiomedef16 Go for it ... hang on though, get a sample bag first, of 6mm and 10mm and paint up a few, see if you get on with them before blowing a ton!

    I agree with and approve all that was said here. I used pretty similar basing conventions with my 6mm stuff.

      Basing is such a personal matter yet much debated. I used to get quite anxious about "getting it right" but now I just do as I like and be dammed LOL.

      ***** This may seem apples and oranges, but I am also quite anxious for basing my grots for GorkaMorka. The bases that came with that game were quite unique and were tied to a game mechanic. You could mount as many models on a vehicle that would fit. However, with the current vehicles, this could be less of a consideration as you'd be able to fit more 28mm bases on it then with the old trucks. The old GoM "Bean Shaped" bases could be used to fit a horde of grots on a new vehicle. Its whatever really, as I am not likely to actually get to play the game ever...but its a great example of paralysis by analysis that plagues my brain.

    Figure ratios later than 1:1 have always driven me nuts, not sure why, like if one model represents 30 men, it fries my brain. The only way I've been able to get into DBA was by changing my view of what the units represented. Rather than be a larger unit, it makes more sense in my head for them to just be part of an army detachment fighting in a large skirmish. Wonder if anyone else sees it that way.

      However you see it in your mind is how you see it, just as long as you get enjoyment out of the hobby that all that counts.

    Quick question, Ringo: the local store had 40mm x 15mm bases, but no 40mm x 20mm.
    Would it be horrible for me to use those, or should I hold out for the 40mm x 20mm? I don't want to base these guys on the wrong size bases.

    • @RingoSimpkinsUK
      @RingoSimpkinsUK  9 років тому

      WarbossTae It's a personal thing in my view, there is no wrong or right, personally, I'd go for the 20mm bases as it will make the strips look better, less crammed.

    how big are your cavalry bases? and is it a good idea to stick them on the same type of base as my infantry? im new to 6mm so yeah XD

  • @WarbossTae
    @WarbossTae 9 років тому +1

    Excellent! Thank you for taking the time to film this! I had no idea that however many models you actually use are just a representation and not set in stone. Can I ask what material you use for the bases themselves? Is that a thin balsa wood, or thick plasticard? Also, would you say the Byzantines are more of a rabble army (like the ancient Brits), or more organized like your Romans? Thanks again for all the help, Ringo!

    • @RingoSimpkinsUK
      @RingoSimpkinsUK  9 років тому

      WarbossTae Byzantine armies are extremley organised and well ordered. I am using pre-cut MDF but thick plasti-card is just as good, not tried balsa to be honest. In ancients and historic gaming it would be impossible to use a 1 to 1 scale, so generally ground scale is 1 to 20 or so or 1 to 50 etc, not really important, at 1 to 20, 10 figures would represent a unit of 200 men as an example.

    I really liked what you have done for your DBA bases. The numbers, spacing just look right. Do you have suggestion for DBN (DBA Napoleonics)? I am trying to figure out how to base:
    -Heavy cavalry (cuirassiers)
    -Light cavalry (Hussars)
    -Line infantry
    -Light infantry

    • @RingoSimpkinsUK
      @RingoSimpkinsUK  7 років тому

      I am so sorry I missed this comment!! Hence my late reply, I have never played DBN, I only do Ancients in 6mm, but I guess as most Napoleonic armies are highly organised you'd be looking at two ranks for Line Infantry, probably ten to twelve figures per base for your lights, the Cuirasssier the two rank standard heavy Cav and your Hussars as with the Lights probably eight figures or less on the base.

    Dude, this is great. Which of those armies did you do first? I'm not sure if it's because I'm Italian, but I prefer those fellows...were they done second, or from a different manufacturer? The sculpts just look better/more detailed. The English seem a bit "flatter"
    This is why I love and hate UA-cam. Now I feel compelled to break out some WarMaster or Epic. :shaking my fist:

    • @RingoSimpkinsUK
      @RingoSimpkinsUK  9 років тому

      TheJankmaster I did the English first, they are both from Baccus 6mm. I think it's the armour that makes the Romand look chunkier
