Hi everyone! One of my first published lessons on UA-cam was for this solo, over 10 years ago. This is my new and improved version. Next up will be another classic guitar solo lesson, but from EVH’s biggest early influence. Stay tuned! 🎸
anybody got tips on the stretchy lick? (12-15-19) i know to move my thumb down and to try to adjust the angle of the guitar, but i still can’t reach the notes far enough to do legato like he does, my hands aren’t as flexible and big lol. any tips i should know?
Sweet!!! I like how you always capture those open string note that Eddie seems to hit a lot. Almost like accidents but yet they totally add to the overall solo.
I’ve read in several places where Michael was so complimentary of Eddie - not his obvious talent as a guitarist but as a complete musician and composer. Michael appreciated that when Eddie showed up to do his part he actually had things to say about the song and arrangement, etc. Michael said it would have been so easy for him (Eddie) to just show up, lay it down and “beat it” outta there, but he didnt. That said I read he laid this solo down off the cuff and very quickly. Thanks for this FrEaK!🤘🏼🔥🥳
Hey Dave, another great lesson. Back when this came out, I thought this was another awesome Eddie solo. The band that I was in would never play this song so I never took the time to figure it out. I didn’t have a whammy bar either. Solo’s like this one just shows that Eddie is the GOAT! It’s good to see you do a Van Halen lesson. It seems like it’s been awhile. Thank you ❤️
Could not click fast enough! Thanks! One of my favourite solos and an elegant microcosm of EVH's style... esp. looking forward to your gold-standard accuracy re: lesson/tabs
still amazing how one guy can come up with stuff that gets even cooler the more you listen to it. I've read about this session & listened to interviews that it was "done in 2 takes" or "it was a bunch of pieces stitched together" but regardless, 40 years later, it holds up as a great solo.
Taking it box by box like this is fantastic. I've been working on this solo for a couple weeks now. I didn't feel like I was making any progress until I found this video. Thank you so much!
Another fantastic breakdown man. I got this album for my tenth birthday and I still have it. Its a phenomenal album. For the longest time I had no idea Eddie did the solo to this song. I remember hearing it much much later in life and I "heard" the solo and I said damn that sure sounds like Eddie. Of course his style is unmistakable. I remember being blown away yet again by the mastery that is EVH. I had no idea. I dont think I have ever seen you tackle an acoustic song. If you have my apologies. Try out the song New World on VH3. The red headed step child album that some cant seem to get into. I went to see that tour here in Houston back in 98, and Gary was fantastic live and the set was amazing. Cheers!!
How do you do the harmonics thing on the 14th fret? I'm using a strat and I can hear just a bit of the harmonics, it doesn't "scream" like the one in the video.
I assume your Strat has single-coil pickups. To really get the tapped harmonics to pop out (or scream as you say), using humbucking pickups like Eddie did really helps. That said, you can still do it with single-coil pickups... you just might need to use more distortion/gain.
I was nervous about that at first, but so far I haven't noticed any marks from it. Then again, I'm not jumping around wildly with it :) The only time I really hear it hit the guitar is when I'm lifting the strap over my head, either to put it on or take it off.
This is what I wish Tom Shreds had…. a full slow play through. I thought he did that but now I can’t find it. This is so useful!!!! There’s no one else I’d rather learn solos from than you, PDX.
This illustrates the genius of Eddie's compositions. Eat that, you jerks that say Ed never wrote a memorable solo. Here is yet another example of his fine work.
Hey Dave, luv your channel been a sub'ber almost from the beginning. How about a tutorial on VH - We Die Bold? This is an unreleased track from a '77 demo that should have made it to one of the 6-pack albums but was overlooked.
Really great playing! I've been following you for a while and i like the content you put out. Could you make a video about how to tap? I've been trying to figure out for years but i don't get what i'm missing
In those 84 years, I listened, listened and could not pick up. Then the tape recorder was not possible to listen to in slow motion. Where were you then??)))) Thank you for your videos. I still can’t find the time to sit down and learn, but somehow I’ll definitely try.
Finally getting around to learning this solo after 6 years of woodshedding I can finally do the long stretchy passages like this requires. Thanks bro - you are my go to for these lessons for years now. Keep rocking 🤘🎸
Amazing lesson thank you so much. The only annoying thing with my floyd rose trem is that my guitar is set up in standard tuning so if I tune it down half a step and perform any dive bombs then it goes back into standard tuning again.
This is so cool man! What model Music Man is that? I need a guitar with whammy bar, but no Floyd Rose. Has the guitar even given any tuning stability problems? Thank you.
Yo brother nice job as usual. Try Lick 3 as below. Pretty sure the repeated part (after the first eight notes) is like the “fives pulloff” thing Ed usually does in the blues box (although I have never seen anyone tab it like this) It works because third string 19th fret is D. Hammer the D from nowhere. Tab below: 12 19 15 12 19 (Repeat)

Just practice you’ll get there, happened with me too
Camron cooper channel 😊
Any chance of spanish fly?)
Ahhh... I've thought about that. Never really learned it past the tapping part. We'll see :)

Thanks Dave! Yeah, with Ed it always seems to fit :)
Best tutorial for Beat it. Just nailed it
Fantastic. Thanks for the lesson, finally an accurate lesson of this solo.
PDX, your tone on this solo is amazing. Nicely done!

Yeah, and he did it for free too! Super cool of him! Rock on bro! :)
THIS is what I call a tutorial... both instructive & entertaining. Thank you very much.

Bang on mate, keep up the good work. Thanks for putting the time in. Love from the UK
Hey Jon, thanks bro! :)

thanks for the reply, I'll try that out@@PDXguitarfreak
Sections would sound like octave clefs
Section One - Treble clef
Section Two - Treble clef
Section Three - Treble clef
Section Four - Treble clef (scratch in Treble clef 8vb)
Section Five - Bass clef
Section Six - Treble clef
Section Seven - Treble clef
Section Eight - Treble clef 8va (scratches in Treble clef 15mb)
Thanks for the tutorial . It helps me a lot
Excellent lesson. You explain this so well and throughly. The visualization is perfect. Thank you!
Simply awesome 👌 5 star service on this channel lol. I love the way you break down the solos and it's perfect for me! Thank you
That stretch part is really hard to nail, now I think I'll get It.
I am curious..how do you protect the finish on the EVH Signature from damage of the snap hook on the bridge eye bolt?
I was nervous about that at first, but so far I haven't noticed any marks from it. Then again, I'm not jumping around wildly with it :) The only time I really hear it hit the guitar is when I'm lifting the strap over my head, either to put it on or take it off.
@@PDXguitarfreak I was thinking about putting white painters tape on the body where the snap hook could hit...if i can find it in white that is...
Best lesson i have seen 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Seen so many lessons on this song and I think this one may be the best. Very helpful, thank you
You are welcome, Chandler! :)
when it comes to Eddie Van Halen stuff you are by far the most accurate!

Thanks again, bro! I had never heard of Tom, but I will take it as a compliment :)
@@PDXguitarfreak he’s very talented. He does Malmsteen curriculum too.
Tom has it. You just have to pay for it on his website. Tom has the best VH teaching info out there. Worth every penny.
To Eat It ! You've got to Beat It !
Hahaha Hilarious Hey Dave ? 🤣
As Always ROCK ON MY BROTHER! 🤘 ⚡️🤘
LOL hey bro! let's rock! :) 🎸🎸🎸
A million thanks for this one. Really appreicate it
You are welcome! :)
Dude, you're in front of a green-screen. Chromakey that sucka and whack those piccie graphics overlays on the background! 😅
This illustrates the genius of Eddie's compositions. Eat that, you jerks that say Ed never wrote a memorable solo. Here is yet another example of his fine work.
All tips on how to consistently get clear harmonic including apps, guitar, effect, pickup selection would greatly appreciated. Anyone?
Antisocial ...... Antisocial. Great vid btw.
This is it good. Are you sure he doesn't tap part 3?
Most accurate Beat It solo lesson ever! 👍
Hey Dave, luv your channel been a sub'ber almost from the beginning. How about a tutorial on VH - We Die Bold? This is an unreleased track from a '77 demo that should have made it to one of the 6-pack albums but was overlooked.
Hey Joe, that's a great idea... not sure I've seen anyone do that. The list is long, but we'll see :)
I really like the way you do that fast stuff (ha, ha). Can you believe they are both gone.
wow my friend you are the best so far to pass this beat solo,,,, now I understand lol thank you
Really great playing! I've been following you for a while and i like the content you put out. Could you make a video about how to tap? I've been trying to figure out for years but i don't get what i'm missing
Thanks Wolf! I've been thinking of doing a tapping tutorial... let me chew on it a little more
Awesome channel, great playing, and great walk through, you deserve way more views and subscribers!!!
Very good teacher, thank you so much.
Please do Runaround and Best Of Both Worlds solo lessons!!

Thanks bro! :)
Damn! Do you give lessons in Portland ?
I wonder if they are playing this wherever they are
Hot damn!!
Hey Dave! Thanks! :)
Hell yeah! I love this thank you! Please consider again the solo from 5150. It would be super amazing to learn your transcription.

Cadê o solo da erupton?
This is so cool man! What model Music Man is that? I need a guitar with whammy bar, but no Floyd Rose. Has the guitar even given any tuning stability problems? Thank you.
That guitar has a Floyd rose. And it is not a music man. It is an EVH.
