It’s weird to be so affected by the loss of the great EVH. But like you, I’m devastated and I feel hallow. Hey bro, thanks for the nice comment! As for Eddie's use of scales, I think of him as more of a "pattern" player, than a scale player. That is, he probably has patterns (or groupings of notes) in his head that he uses, but they don't always fit within the confines of a traditional scale. Often times (like the finger tapping at the beginning of this one), it's simply a symmetrical pattern on the fretboard... same pattern/sequence on each string. But to your point, he often plays pentatonic based licks too (both minor and major, although more of the former), of which most of this solo is derived (minor pentatonic for this solo). Occasionally, I will see patterns that imply other actual scales such as Dorian or Phrygian, but then he goes off and starts doing his own thing LOL. As for Live Without A Net solo, that's a great one for sure... one of my favorites from the usual collection of known live EVH solos. However, I typically go for much shorter solos in my lessons. Sorry if that's disappointing to hear, but I'd rather be honest upfront. :)

Hey bro, yeah I can share the Helix patch with you that I used. Give me a day or two, and I'll post it on my Line 6 Custom Tone page. Keep in mind - for my own personal use, and for each guitar that I own, I tend to create patches specific to that guitar. In other words, I have a handful of patches that I use specifically with my Flying V... and those will be a little different from the patches I use with my Les Paul... or my Strat... or my EVH Wolfgang, etc. What guitar do you play? Or if multiple, which guitar do you play EVH stuff on? That will help me decide what to post.

The Flying V Eddie used was made of Korina. Is that one made of Mahogany? I hear that Korina (or Black Limba) is the loudest tone wood unplugged of all tonewoods. I’d love to get my hands on one but the reissues are $9,999.00! A good example is You Really Got Me on the chorus he does some transitions I never realized before. Lastly!! Beautiful Girls in its entirety is frustrating me because of all the variations he does in both verses and chorus. I’d love to see you do an instructional video on the whole song except the solo since you’ve already done that. Oh also, it frustrates me because his rhythm is so complex to follow along

I have the tab to this but even till this day, I can't ever seem to get the timing right because some of it is slightly off beat and I'm a percussive player...ugh
Are you playing that all from memory? Should I learn pentatonic scales first ? I am a rhythm guitar player. I just can’t figure out how you know where to put your fingers so fast. What would be the fastest way that I can learn how to play that
Hi Steve, I think learning scales is an excellent way to segue way into the world of lead guitar. Also, practicing bending notes and vibrato.

The Flying V Eddie used was made of Korina. Is that one made of Mahogany? I hear that Korina (or Black Limba) is the loudest tone wood unplugged of all tonewoods. I’d love to get my hands on one but the reissues are $9,999.00! Thank you for being so great at communicating. I’ve taken your advice as well and listened to isolated Van Halen tracks on UA-cam, downloaded them, slowed them down, and then hear all those notes Eddie plays which you’d never notice otherwise. A good example is You Really Got Me on the chorus he does some transitions I never realized before. Lastly!! Beautiful Girls in its entirety is frustrating me because of all the variations he does in both verses and chorus. I’d love to see you do an instructional video on the whole song except the solo since you’ve already done that. Oh also, it frustrates me because his rhythm is so complex to follow along
