- We got the Canon R5 with the RF 15-35mm f2.8 in for testing! Figured it would be fun to try a night vlog. See the low light performance, test the 1080p vs line skipped 4k, 4k HQ vs 8k etc. Some big surprises!

Its not full frame that makes a camera good in low light its the pixel size. Thats why the Sony a7s iii is only 12mp. The perfect camera for video was a camcorder until they made that!

Great night vlog! I think the AF issue was because you were in such low light, but it was much brighter behind you, drawing the focus to that. The overall image quality was very clean for the conditions you were in.

The HDR PQ WILL clip in a normal timeline / Monitor.
You have to edit in an HDR timeline AND watch in an HDR monitor.
You should be able to just upload to youtube without editing and youtube will understand the format.
But if you mess with the file you might lose UP TO 2 stops of highlight and 2 stops of shadows.
Night vlogs is the way to go. More interesting people around, risk of getting beaten up. You should go for it.
The channel will go to night-vlogs exclusively when he gets his Sony a7siii.

The 4k loser mode has frickin' 3D separation that makes you look like someone is following you around with a green screen. I'm impressed.
But that has nothing to do with the recording mode. That's just subject-camera distance and focal length.

When he shows Fuji, pay attention the outline of shoulders, especially his left shoulder. Looks really soft on Fuji (although probably the lens, not the camera). You can have amazing background separation even at f4.

That's definitely a hot pixel, I've dealt with these plenty of times before. Very yikes to see this happen on such an expensive camera but, it is physics after all.
It's the Canon sniper ready to take him out, if he says something wrong.

I didn’t notice it, but if there is a hot pixel it’s an easy fix. Go into the menu select clean sensor and when it’s done the pixel will be fine.
You have to select clean sensor yourself though, as that seems to recharge the pixels vs when you turn the camera off and it cleans the sensor.
Had this happen to my r and did the above and no issues since.

impressive performance, I'm impressed at the quality of this camera! Great video, actually the only one I've seen about the camera. Every other idiot talks about the so called heat problem. You however show that the camera performs excellently for real life vlogging. Well done and thanks

Yes, the R5 still puts out the best IQ of any current mirrorless. And Ordinary Filmmaker is putting out 1-2 hour long videos shot with the R5 with the new firmware with no issues.

Surprising that the AF struggled so much in the low light. In sunlight it does exceptionally well, but in low light both Sony and Olympus do noticeably better.

Very helpful video, Kasey. If you have ever shot a wedding reception, these are the conditions you face. Odd lighting, low light, lots of movement. I really thought the R5 would do better. Not impressed for a flagship $4000 camera. Autofocus struggled, IBIS erratic, lots of noise, low dynamic range. I can see renting one of these for wedding photography, but not buying one.
That was really disappointing.....poor quality all around with the R5.
Kasey has a knack for making cameras look bad (though he's entertaining AF and funny). His results don't really jive with anybody else's. If you use a slow zoom in a backlit situation in darkness that is at the limit of the ISO abilities of a camera the AF will struggle on every camera. It's not the same as sitting in a dark room stationary with a fast prime. Also, every single tester online has shown the IBIS on the R5/R6 to be superior to the Sonys (Dan Watson, Froknowsphoto, No Life, Parker Wallbeck.... etc, etc, etc). Dynamic range of the R5 sensor is the best of any current full frame camera (photons to photos .net shows this). Dynamic range limitations are due to Clog though it's already way more than any UA-cam scrub would need. Matti Haapoja shoots with the old R in broad daylight using basic camera profiles and his videos have more apparent dynamic range than the A7SIII because he knows how to grade. FroKnowsPhoto shows a side by side of the A7SIII vs R5 in noon sun using Clog vs Slog3 and the graded images were almost the same for dynamic range, but the Canon had a much sharper/better 4k image. Clog3 will increase the range to well above what almost any video mirrorless currently has. Clog2 is available on the R5 is you shoot Raw btw (in final editing you can select this and dynamic range is better than the A7SIII confirmed by a few video guys).

If you rent the R5 for the wedding and low-light conditions, get the RF 50/85mm f/1.2 primes along with it. The f/2.8 zooms don't cut it in those conditions.
Dead pixel shows how IBIS works. That's a masterpiece of camera review.
There's a hot/dead pixel just left of the center of the frame during the end of the video. It's pronounced when the autofocus is hunting around 12:56. What's really interesting about it is that you can watch the digital stabilisation working. The pixel appears to jump around when moving because the output frame is grabbing a different part of the sensor when the digital IS does its magic.

According to the Magic Lantern forum, after the camera overheats changing the date and then popping the battery out bypasses the overheat recovery time and enable shooting right away. I would probably still let it cool down for a few minutes, but basically, the R5 can shoot 8K all day.
Why is there a moving green pixel almost constantly?? I can see it when I set the video in 4K at @9:32 on you chin for example. It’s more prominent in the low light shots towards the end. It almost seems like a pixel from the autofocus box is seeping to the recorded footage?? I saw that on an apple display, nothing massive or anything but not visible on a phone screen. Let me know if its in the raw clip or just a render thing!

a7S III has the gyro stabilization that can get perfectly robotic smooth. The more you crop in the program the more stable it is. Not that you need it, but its an option that cannot be beat without a gimbal I think.
As Kasey mentioned the Canons have Enhanced Stabilization. It is better than the digital stabilization on the A7S III. He was just comparing the IBIS. Canon IBIS is best when it syncs with Canon lenses with OIS. As Kasey said in an earlier video, the Canon wide zoom lens that he has is too long and there are no Prime RF lenses available. The A7S III is a better vlogging package, but who knows if it still would be if Canon had more lenses fit for the task.
@@robertm3951 a7S III has a gyro program. Canon doesn't. It is much better. You technically could make the a7S III like a GoPro if you wanted.
@@NirnBootMod I was talking out of the camera. Yes, the gyro information does make it easier to stabilize in post. It is not really very hard to stabilize any footage in post as long as you crop in and 8K gives far more room to crop in. I would be interested in seeing them compared and seeing which one is better in practice.

13:14 , 14:15 - the "focus hunt in the dark" - heads up... it wasn't hunting because it was dark. It was hunting because the background was highly exposed and your face was highly under-exposed.
Try a shot where you're in the dark and the background is also dark. Because the former situation in a cinema camera would require foreground lighting to balance for the focus/lighting.
I'd love to see the same night vlog with the R6 some are saying its supposed to be better

@J G Good luck Nikon, I just sold the Z6 as the AF was constantly letting me down and I would have to go back and refilm. The camera felt great in the hand, Ibis was good, colors too.
You need to punish the XT4 and A7S3 in these conditions, otherwise it is hard is judge. Great video though!
Yes... sitting in a dark room while not moving, with a fast prime doesnt compare to shooting backlit in near darkness with a slow zoom.

Hey Kasey, you will ironically get better skin tones in Ambiance priority. It tends to lean the white balance more toward warmer natural looking skin tone.
Get in front of a daylight balanced light and toggle between them to see the difference, it’s quite substantial.

At around 9:28 a bright spot (dead pixel?) starts to appear in your chin/beard area and it stays there for the remainder of the video. It shifts around, but I suspect that's the stabilisation moving the image around, which in turn makes it likely to be a sensor issue. Maybe it's a dead pixel. Do you see it? Just off center to the left. It's difficult to see until you view it full screen. Then it's clear.

@@cameraconspiracies I see. No, I meant 'actual' games like Tomb Raider, Dishonored, etc.
Just make sure when filming in low light the High speed noise reduction in camera settings should not exceed "standard". My experience with canon is that you can greatly reduce noise when set to "high" but it always soften the image. If possible you can set it to "low" and it actually makes the image sharper. That's their only way to improve their camera on low light but Sony still destroys any close competitors on low light.

@@MichaelRichards983 Hmmm, and yet, R5 and R6 in 4K HQ are much sharper than the best 4K from the A7SIII (Parker Wallbeck and FroKnowsPhoto do side by sides). In fact, in Parker's review, the 4K scrub mode on the R5 is sharper than the best 4k on the A7SIII... hmmmm.
Even the street bums are nice in Canada.
I am more curious about how the R6 does in low light. Full frame cameras do get more light, but the higher the resolution the more the light has to be divided between photosites. A big part of why the A7S III shines in low light is its low resolution. Plus a prime lens was used on the A7S III vs f/2.8 on the R5.
also the "line skipped Standard 4k" is more noisy in higher ISO. the HQ4k has way less noise. also a thing to keep in mind

Thanks for doing low light "Blue Hour" testing of you cameras. A lot of days in the PNW are heavy overcast, heavily blue and green saturated, a difficult task to shoot useable video in these conditions. Personally not a fan of anything over 4K, dynamic range and stabilization is more critical for my needs.

I think the ibis being bad is because the lens and camera are too heavy for that long tripod and increase the movement and vibration maybe try smaller tripod for stable shot .
Looks like there is a dead pixel floating around just left of center.
Auto White Balance renders weird skin tones that shift around. Never seen it work well on any camera.
The image looks really good
when the cam was struggling to AF you was very dark but the background was bright and contrasty ...maybe be better if it was all dark
It also has to do with the lens being f2.8... a f1.2 prime would have done better in the very low light
