Hi folks, since I've had a few requests to make this cover downloadable, you can find it as a free download on my Bandcamp page now: joshua-lee.bandcamp.com/track/outer-wilds-elegy-for-the-rings-cover Thanks for listening!
The link is not working for me. I have a buddy who hasn't played the game yet, so I'm scared to give him a link to this vid on account of spoilers. But he is a huge metal fan and I'd really like to use this as bait to get him to play the game, ha. Is the link still working on your end?
YEAHHHHHHHHHH the shift to acoustic around 4:00 is really well done. Felt like a neat reference to the overworld songs like The River. also, stranger howl at 5:00 was funny. Definitely conveyed that 'running for your life because you've been spotted' vibe lmao
So I know 5k views isn't a lot in UA-cam numbers, but this video has almost 5,000 views which feels like quite a lot! Thanks folks for enjoying this and be sure to go support Andrew Prahlow, the original composer of the Outer Wilds soundtrack. I do sometimes make original music, most of which is on my Bandcamp pages linked below: josh-lee.bandcamp.com/ (electronic music, soundtracks, etc.) pale-star.bandcamp.com/ (ambient, drone, doom stuff) I don't always make music like this but keep an eye out - I'm always working on new stuff 👁
I’m picturing the Doom 2016 cover art, with the Hatchling in place of the Doomslayer, fighting Elks, while the titan’s skull in the background is replaced by an anglerfish fossil. Amazing work, truly.
This cover works so damn well with this track. The original has the chords on what I think is a bass, so this version definitely fits the tone and mood of the game. Still for me one of the most atmospheric games I've ever played, specifically EotE. I recently played through Re: Village and the baby section for the first time, pretty horrific. For me though, honestly, I found this DLC more scary. The lack of any voice acting, no stuff to read like in the main game, just pure visual storytelling, and the dark sections take me back to when I was little and was petrified of the dark. I think that's why I found this DLC so freaky, but the way it encouraged me to find the answers in the dark made it an experience I hold in such high regard, and one that I sadly can never experience again for the first time. Sorry for the little tangent, I just absolutely love this game. Once again, solid cover.
this gave me an insane idea... A game that's like a fusion of Outer Wilds, Everhood, and a little bit of Doom, where you have to kill each of the Strangers to free them from their twisted digital immortality that they're too afraid to lose.
That’s such a neat concept! Like you spend most of the game in the “overworld” until you find where the strangers live, and then you go through a unique stage based around whatever their “thing” is
I fucking love this in my opinion I oh so wish you added a blowing air noise at the end like the strangers blowing out the lights but still badass song Edit: idk why but at 0:46 it reminds me of the Metro series OST
This cover is so much better than I thought initially. I loved it. It's become one of my favorite songs, period. However, it mirrors the species' journey quite well. It begins with an ominous, somewhat mysterious tone. It gives you something to entice you. It enters the primary section, which you could read as anger or action. The 'metal'. The next section I read as a mix of regret and hope. It's beautiful. It's an attempt at finding peace. Finally, we enter the rejection. A relapse in anger. The species let themselves lose their humanity (owl-manity?). They let themselves die. Finally, they are lost. The song ends in anger. Obviously I'm reading into it more than is likely there. I just love this song a lot.
I've been hoping for a metal remix of some of the Outer Wilds\EotE tracks. This is great. I really like how you incorporated the "ejection scream" at 4:40.
I love that you kept the distorted whine of the original that gave it an extra creepy edge, and I'm a big fan of the way the acoustic moments add a touch of melancholy to the otherwise dark and heavy flair of this cover. You just got a sub on the first video of your channel.
Love this version, so raw and yet captures the original spirit of the song so perfectly! How does this only have 12,000 views? Needs a lot more imho, fantastic work!
After having reset my settings for Infinite because of reinstall and finding out I actually really like the music at least by itself, man.... This is awesome
You'd think Doomguy would be able to just shotgun his way to victory. Then you remember you're sent into the dream world without any equipment but a lantern. Eh, he'll weaponize it anyway.
The Slayer isn't merely a monster or mindless. Given the fact he even made it here, we would probably just blow out the fires once he knew that the Owlks sealed the Eye's Signal, but also either break the vault open or figure it out and make it inside to understand the full story
@@zachrabaznaz7687 he would extinguish the campfires for the stealth part and rip the bells of the ceiling for the riddle part and kick down the prisoners door guns blazing demonstrating a detailed understanding of the entire plotline, and also demonstrating hyperviolence :D
The owlelks were around for around 250,000 years before the end of the game, and probably much longer after the sun went supernova, so I believe they came up with this version in universe
Metal is not normally my genre but damn. As a player who enjoyed the game, I can say you pretty well captured the anger and sorrow of their story perfectly with this piece. Awesome tribute.
This cover popped up on my recommended, and I'm so glad it did! I remember just sitting by the water side house and listening to the Owlk jamming out this tune, so it's awesome hearing it expanded out like this. Great work!
I rarely write comments, but this time I want to say a huge thank you for this masterpiece. It's been on repeat for three months now. this is the best thing I've heard. (sorry for the mistakes, I'm not English)
Never would have thought a metal Elegy would sound so good! Sounds just as eerie and beautiful as the original but at the same time much more epic. Amazing cover
I keep coming back to this it's just so incredibly well done. Really breathed new life into this piece of music and turned it into something really fucking awesome. Well done!
Incredible cover. Also, glad you changed the description (although it does have doom metal influence, I think too many people were expecting to hear something influenced by Mick Gordon).
I'm surprised by how well metal fits with this track, but it makes sense now that I think about it. Given what the people went through, they'd definitely make metal music to express their anguish.
Ian Jacobson, one of the concept artists has a shirt design under the merchandise section of his Artstation that is a drawing of the Owls in that kind of spiky metal style. Sadly it seems sold out, but it fits them amazingly well. I'm kinda inspired to make an animation with this track now. Imagine how terrifying it would be to have this playing as they chase you (I have no skills in animation whatsoever.)
Excellent work. The buildup is so well executed and the result is just so powerful. I was also sitting here watching the video like "man it would be so sick if the owlks vanished due to the flood when the song ends" and THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT YOU DID what a fine detail.
Awesome work. Just finished playing Outer Wilds and the DLC the other day, and now I stumble upon this. Being a huge metalhead (100 points if you recognize my pfp), I can be pretty particular about how a metal cover of a video game song should be done, but this is just perfectly executed!
@@joshualee5473 Awesome! The whole song just hits so hard, I keep coming back to it, it's a perfect adaptation to a genre that's a perfect fit for it. You kept all the essentials, added from the library and then put your own spin to it. Did you notice Andrew tuned down during River's End, and that's why you move from E to F when the song opens up?
The effect re-using that melody in this composition is unlike anything i've heard before. I literally can't put it into words the feeling it evokes. Sorrow, gratitude, rage, pride for your entire species with an intensity unqiue to this version. You made one of the best videos on this platform imo
Great stuff, ~3 minutes in gave me chills. This tells me that all the birds needed to do was invite the Hearthians in for a jam session and they would've been in a way better mood. Which I guess is part of the lesson of Outer Wilds to begin with!
Just got into metal and seeing the one song that greeted me when I first played this gem of a game turned into a metal track makes my head spin; this is fire as all hell
