I felt invisible going to white pride and I had a white women tell me how they loved pale skin on a woman. I had white gay men tell me that they had a Black woman inside them as they then used Black vernacular. Or said microaggressive shit to me. I had a white lesbian and her friends come at me and my friends over a misunderstanding they had. We knew this one lesbian, Mary and my friend, whose a white trans man, made a joke to the Mary. Mary laughed and then this white woman near Mary started to berate my friend. As we kept telling her, "We know her. We joke like this." She continued to curse out my friend and got her friends to curse him out. Yhen when my other friend, Nick and I stepped in, she started to use her white women tears and tell us how we didn't know what it's like to be judged. "I'm in a little tiny town in Texas."
Nick: "You're talking to a gay Latino man, a Black Lesbian and a white trans guy. Please don't use that I struggle, shit."
And I miss Pride but I feel not as attacked with microaggressions when I go to Black Pride. I dont have people ask about my fucking hair and then try to touch it like I'm a pet.

As someone who is white, I've always thought that coming out at black was harder. Because racism still exists in the LGBTQ+ community, which can suck because then you may also be alienated by a community that is supposed to love you? Especially if said person is trans and black. Back during the aids pandemic, trans people were horribly looked down upon. So that was almost a triple whammy back then. Pose really opened my eyes to this and it's broken my heart everytime I think about it.

I'm 55 years old and one thing I've noticed is that black culture is routinely adopted (especially in recent years) commercially and it becomes pop culture; but it began in black culture. Black people are cool and we do it like nobody else. And now, we're seeing it in mainstream media. So I just wanted to add that bit of a perspective, because it's really an indicator of the progress that people of color have made into mainstream culture.

Imo, it's just an acceptance of oppressed culture that would challenge the status quo, whitewashed to keep the same regimes in place -- better looking regimes, sure, but still as oppressive.

Very enlightening. This has given me plenty to think about. I'm 76/white/gay, and I appreciate how clearly you addressed the topic. I am constantly assessing my prejudices in an attempt to rid myself of irrational thinking about people I don't know. It's not easy. I walked into a gay club in LA many years ago and discovered I was in a "black club". When I walked through the door it seemed (incorrectly) that the music stopped and all eyes turned toward me... the only white guy. I was afraid. I had to make a choice to either turn around and leave, or go to the bar and order a drink. I ordered a drink. The bartender was very nice, but I felt out of my comfort zone. I have never again been in the position of being the only white guy in the room, but I am aware that black people are in that situation frequently. I've seen it, and I want to reach out to help, but how does one approach a stranger and say "how can I help make you comfortable?" (That actually sounds like a pretty good pick-up line, lol.) I'm an old man now. Talk about being invisible in a night club. I haven't been clubbing in many years, for 3 reasons: 1.) I don't pick up strangers (anymore) but boy do I have stories.) 2.) Nobody talks to old men in a gay club. 3.) Sitting alone watching young people have fun makes me look and feel "pervy". I'm banished to the fringes of gaydom...the trash bin of gay founding fathers. But I'm proud that my generation made many strides toward gay rights. I hope your generation will find a way to unite us. Thanks for the excellent video.

Maybe that is a good start. how does one approach a stranger and say "how can I help make you comfortable?" Start there. There are so many free books at the library like Stamped from the Beginning, Nice Racism, and Mediocre that can teach you how to have a more thoughtful dialogue with people, as people, and acknowledge you see them as they are.

Exactly! I’ve never heard of Pride segregation. I’ve been to Salt Lake City’s Pride Center many times and there were all races who went there. Pride is about equality! Specifically with sexual orientation. If any of you are bringing race into this then you do not stand for Pride. It’s about EQUALITY! So anyone who believes or wants segregation in the Pride community, well they just don’t deserve to stand for Pride then. Like I said though, I’ve NEVER heard of this. Sophia Is Strange the definition of pride is a feeling or deep pleasure or satisfaction derived of one’s own achievements. It’s just about feeling proud of who you are and where you come from. For example: He takes great pride in his appearance. It does not have anything to do with loving other people. If anything, if somebody has too much pride, it’s considered just being selfish. The only thing more dangerous than the enemy is pride.

Racists are people who are way to into their own group that they dont care about the other groups. We all fit into one group tho, humans, even if we were all identical, we would still find ways to go into separate groups. It would be awesome if humans werent like that and put their differences aside and work together but no. We are stuck being a civilization that separates each other and sometimes hate each other. They don’t go through our experiences so they’re desensitized. They don’t get followed in high end clothing stores, cops don’t pull them over because they “looked a bit lost.” So because they don’t go through these things they won’t understand the fact that we know the look, and that look is so damn uncomfortable. I’d also like to add that they don’t know how lonely it feels when they’re the only person who looks like them in a space. Until our comfortability is respected and steps are taken to ensure that, your safe spaces will never be our safe spaces. So rest assured that we will make our own.

I was just thinking about this topic myself! Specifically, I was analyzing how there were so many films centering on lesbians that are white or anything other than black. There are a few movies out there centering on black lesbians, but the only one I’ve seen that was noteworthy was, “Pariah”. That alone sheds light on a difference in history, because even though black lesbians have experiences that can be cinematic as well, many of our productions are limited to things like UA-cam webseries instead of Netflix or film (not that UA-cam isn’t a great platform, but of course a different audience can be tapped into when using film to portray a story). I’m glad you mentioned Pose, bc it’s a major step for that specific community and the Black LGBT community as a whole. However, there is still a long way to go for black women and our representation on bigger platforms. Pose is a dope production and I think it’s so crucial that our stories are being told and even though Ik it’s not all true, there is a realism to it and that’s why I enjoy watching it as a queer woman. I support my people and I’m always ready to be amazed by what we will do next. Going back to main topic though, the divide is all too real. Being a white lesbian and being a black lesbian are not the same and might not ever be the same because of that cultural and historical gap.

Unity is very important, however, lets be real. In many a gay community there's a lot of division for all sorts of stupid reasons. For example, when I came out as bisexual (and later more accurately pansexual) back in the late 90's early 2000's I was in no way shape or form accepted or welcomed by the majority of the gay community in my city. I was considered a straight girl or curious because I'm not butch or gold star. The gay bars were also mostly segregated with a few mainly white bars and a few Black bars only mixing a little. Time to put all that shit to bed. That being said, due to the sad fact that manu Black people are dealing with so much trauma due to systemic racism and oppression, it is sometimes necessary to have Black only spaces... so if you're not Black you don't get to have an opinion on that aspect.

UA-cam recommended your channel to me and I am very glad I clicked on this video. I have always known the gay male community was racist. From the age of 18 until now, in my early 50s, I have been confronted by and deeply disappointed by the rampant racism in the gay male community. The entire video was on point. But where you fully got me was the issue of "preference". I live in Straightville Connecticut and somewhat rely on Grindr to find other gay men, not necessarily for sex but more for nonsexual companionship. I am tired of hanging out at bars and restaurants with only straight people. I want to have a conversation during which I can fully be myself.
Unfortunately, this is where the issue of preference and racism collide and it all turns to shit. On Grindr, I have been rejected, sometimes rather harshly, for being black (as if the profile picture didn't tell you so in the first place), for not having a gym-toned, six-pack stomach, for being "old", for being black and not having the "stereotypical monster dick of death" to go with the skin tone, for not being "masculine" enough (how much is enough by the way?). All these start out as "preferences" and slide into racism pretty fast. Even from other black and Spanish-speaking gay men.
It's hard to find common ground when, as Tarek said, you are being told that you are not good enough. I am opting out of Grindr for a while starting now. My sense of self cannot take the beating anymore. I don't see where the divide will be healed within the community. I really don't. I would rather we keep having "regular" pride and Black Pride events separately. Black gay men need a space where they can feel truly emotionally safe, and unfortunately, it's not within the encompassing white America and white gay male community. Racism is the original sin of the United States. This country was built from its very beginnings on the backs of slave labor and only white people benefitted. Look at the drinking water situation in Flint, Michigan. Look at what's happening with the brown babies and children at The Southern Border in Texas? It's a crying shame and yes, I have cried and I am still crying over everything that has happened to these people since Trump came into office.
The reality is this: If that were white babies taken from their white parents being fed rancid food, housed in cages, with no real beds or warm blankets and left to sit around in soiled diapers, White America would have revolted and that shit would have been fixed, people would be going to jail, lawsuits would have been filed -- all before 10 am the next morning. The racism in every demographic is very real and the only time change will happen is when white America decides to change things because whatever it has now affected them in an intimate and compellingly painful manner. In the 1980s and 1990s, crack cocaine was the scourge of the urban centers of America. And it greatly affected black and brown people. What was the reaction from White America? "These people are animals. They are disgusting. We should lock them up and throw away the key. They should go straight to jail and not to rehab. Rehab is too good for them." Fast forward to the 2000s. There's an opioid epidemic ravaging the suburban and small town communities in America and it's affecting mostly white people. They are dying at an alarming rate --- just like the crack cocaine epidemic. What's the reaction? "These are innocent victims. They need help. We need more rehab centers and more rehab beds. We have to treat them with empathy and kindness."
In terms of of the topic at hand, "Preferences" will go away when people start using "preferences against white gay men. Racism will start to become a thing of the past when major reverse racism -- real reverse racism-- starts to hit white America and they start feeling the pain that everyone else has been feeling for centuries. Until then, good luck with that.

If you are saying that all discrimination is bad, then you are insane, and anti-LGBT. When it comes to ethnicities, people are naturally more attracted to people who like similar to them, and you need to be attracted to your partner for a relationship to work. Watching this in 2020 I’m a little shaken by how this Pride month has changed from last year. It has been a rollercoaster with the pandemic and the police violence and demonstrations. I do think that the silver lining has been that the conversation about race and systematic racism and racism in the gay community has been happening more in general. I think for gay people, and especially for white gay people (speaking as a white gay male) it’s important for us to understand that we are all a product of a racist culture. If you are white your experience of that racist culture has likely given you a false sense of entitlement wether you know it or not. We carry that baggage with us no matter where we go until we learn to look for it in ourselves and discard it. As a white person I used to get very defensive and uncomfortable in discussions about race and privilege, but now I think it’s really helpful to examine where that defensiveness is coming from and looking there to make a change and shed some of that baggage. Anyway great video and Happy Prides!

It's a difficult message to spread to white people (I find myself as a white person trying to discuss this with my white friends and family in partuclar) that being pro-black and acknowledging the privileges that come with being white are not being anti-white. Yes, there definitely are, as you mentioned, black people that say derogatory things about whites as a way to display black pride and black activism. That's kind of the nature of any social movement and social change; you're going to have people use a spectrum of rhetoric, some of which is more moderate, some of which is more extreme, some of which is divisive. But I've come to understand that you don't have to agree with those exact people to still be behind the movement and the message. I think for some white people, they can't ever make that distinction. This is so huge! Not only for people from US but all around the world. I'm white and Brazilian and this is a topic of conversation here too. We don't have like, a Black pride but we always talk about the diferences of being a white gay men between being Black and... exactly! We need to think about these racial aspects in the gay community because each one experiences the world in different way and this topic is very present in the gay community here in Brazil, of course, because of our colonial history and slave.
At the same time, the LGBTQI+ is about celebrating sexual diversity, taking into account the different forms of sexuality and how this sexuality is seen. Black bodies are seen differently from white bodies. PERIOD.
But now, if we look at black trans people, black fem drags, the discussion takes on other directions as well because each one has their own place of speech and own peculiarities. We must have dignity to be proud of and if our issues are not discussed in the community, how can we go into the parade pride if we do not feel represented in the discussion?
Your video is very important and I have to say that you are one of my inspirations to do YT, even though I have not really started yet.

Because without the pretend division divide and conquer won’t work. We’re divided by class. Race. Gender. Belief system and within these divisions exist sub divisions. This is how a few Europeans took over North America and Rome ended up falling. The divisions were exploited causing the population to fight with each other instead of the 20 who were taking the entire thing over. It’s Marxism in action.

Difference of opinion is mainly an issue when those same folks want to push their thinking onto you and thus discriminate. I care not if someone doesnt care for a trans, gay, etc, but when they say you can't have this, i wont take care of you, or actively push for laws to deny you rights is the problem. Thus determining whether this is someone who is simply having a different opinion versus actively trying to keep you down becomes very hard to differentiate.

I’m not really a part of the lgbtq community and I’m not black but I fully support equality in its purest form and so I am always interested in broadening my perspective to these issues regardless of how difficult it is to discuss. One thing that really surprised me was the club dress code thing. I always wondered why that was because I like to dress in punk attire and sometimes I get asked to leave chains or something in my car and I always thought it was for safety reasons like they’re afraid I’m gonna choke someone in the mosh pit or something. Never would’ve realized it might be a race thing.

      @b.ballooon9225 4 роки тому

@Deutsche comrade Wow, I've never met someone so opposite of my views. You are a ethno-nationalist. The truth is, no human being should have pride for their race. You had nothing to do with the accomplishments of your race, and there is absolutely no significant difference between the races. You want to know the biggest difference? White people are at higher risk for skin cancer and black people are at higher risk for heart disease. That's it. Some small genetic differences that affect very specific things. The best goal is to mix the cultures into one, I agree that creating divisions is dangerous, so we should try to assimilate cultures into each other. This doesn't mean that people can't bring parts of their culture over, that's part of the American way. For example, the Hamburger burger originated in the German city of Hamburg. But, German American immigrants eventually made it into the popular hamburger today. The German American immigrants perfectly assimilated with the rest of the nation, that's all the matters.
We shouldn't have black, white, or gay pride anythings. Why? Because all of those things are things out of your control. Those aren't accomplishments, those are just descriptions. You didn't do anything by being white, black, or gay, it just happened. The only thing we should have collective pride for is nations, for now. It makes sense in a democratic nation as we do all collectively vote either on decisions or our representatives. On top of that, the decisions your nation makes has a direct effect on you, therefore you should be able to feel partial pride for its accomplishments if you have to bear its mistakes. But, other than that, we shouldn't really be celebrating any of this pride shit.
TLDR: Blacks and Whites are the same fucking thing you stupid idiots. We're all homo sapiens, you think cats argue about their different fur colors, no, because it's fucking stupid.

But if anyone ever says "I think lighter skinned people are hotter!", it's considered racist. I don't think having a preference to skin color automatically means you're racist. It's not really different than having a preference between favorite colors (like red, blue, green etc). The problem I guess, is telling _why_ they have the preferences they do. It might just be nothing more than personal taste, but it also might be subconscious racism.

As a foreigner I've always find it hard to truly understand some racial issues in western values/cultures. I love the way you've mentioned that it's hard to do comparisons but was able to draw up specific criteria for in depth discussion. I often hear people talk about "A will never understand B" or "C just has it worse than D". Although most of these statements are most likely true, it always felt like an overgeneralization that can result in more exclusion than inclusivity in conversations.
