      Having training mode locked at the beginning has to be a mistake. That's ridiculous! And no continues and only 6 stages for $25? Yikes. Also no online is a major deal breaker as the only person I play co-op with is currently 5k miles away from me. I do love the graphics and music though.

    So amazing that beat-em-ups are thriving. No, not from the big companies that once made their name on them and have long abandoned them, but from the fans who wanted them to stay around and who have made them both nostalgic and fresh. Feels like the old-style Sierra/Lucasarts point-n-click adventure games from roughly the same time period.
    Slopes, I hope you give the Capcom Fighting Collection a look next week. Definitely would love more exposure for Darkstalkers, Red Earth, Cyberbots, Puzzle Fighter, and Pocket Fighter!

    For a person who grew up dumping countless quarters into games of this style in the holy arcades of the late 1980's and 1990's, It is a great time to be alive. Shredder's Revenge has been a legit dream come true and Streets of Rage 4 was the best game of a truly difficult year for myself, and many others. I will pick this one up next month. I just love the passion still being poured into a genre that will always have my heart.

    Love me a good beat em up game, but at 25 euros (there's a small discount if you get it during launch) I kinda hesitate. TMNT was just released, at the same price and that game has online modes for up to 6 players and a bit more depth (challenges, upgrades, unlockable characters, a known IP behind it). But I will probably pick it up because I am a sucker for the genre, picked everything from Fight N Rage and SOR4 to The Takeover and Mayhem Brawler.

    the weight of moves impacting is rather poor I would say from a glance at least. The other thing I think people don't often figure into these older type games is that by design they are limiting in how you engage with the encounters. Final fight is of course designed around it's very simply but tight fun gameplay loop but compared to Turtles in Time it always came off as less dynamic. People rightly champion Final Fight and of course the more approachable Streets of Rage but Turtles in Time managed something different with the formula that moved it on thanks to it's larger understanding for a set of appropriately ranged moves that allowed for a less rigidly defined experience
    Which one is preferred is entirely another thing of course but in truth most of the walk along beat em ups were essentially just Final Fight templates. And nothing wrong with that but it's the reason why the genre eventually died out at this point because the experience just wasn't evolving any

    • @perlichtman1562
      @perlichtman1562 2 роки тому +1

      Playing both Final Vendetta and Final Fight back to back, there’s a much wider variety of ways to approach encounters in Final Vendetta. I’d say there’s a lot more than in Final Vendetta than Turtles in Time but fewer than Shredder’s Revenge. On the flipside, you can access every move in the game in Final Vendetta using fewer buttons than in Shredder’s Revenge (though still twice as many as Turtles in Time).
      It feels very different from a TMNT game given that a hand-to-hand vs. weapons emphasis but Final Vendetta has lot more encounter options than Final Fight. The first time I beat the game on casual mode, I didn’t even use one of the four face buttons and a later playthrough I enjoyed using that button all the time.

      @@perlichtman1562 I haven't played this to know so can only say so much but what I refer to more is not the total moves so much as how you can engage with them. Turtles time has a a good set of range to it's move set which lifts it out of the mostly always close encounters. Which you can still do of course but it's opened up more
      Truth is they are a little different and that's fine. I refer to Turtles Time as a sort on Bayonetta and the more tradition Final Fight style as Ninja Gaiden. Both excellent to play but Bayonetta is more dynamic I feel thanks to how you can use the move set more in terms of what is required. Not more strategically necessarily as these games are built around these designs but you have more scope to engage the encounters in Turtles Time I would say

    • @perlichtman1562
      @perlichtman1562 2 роки тому

      @@adroharv9213 I see what you mean - I thought of the close encounters vs. more ranged ones as being partially a consequence of hand-to-hand vs weapon based combat. Nonetheless, Final Vendetta includes ranged moves that the player can pull off at any time that give the player the option to alternate between close-up encounters and mid-distance combat. In that sense it’s a lot closer to TMNT - but there are no super-wide range options to encounters like the super moves in Shredder’s Revenge (or the quick horizontal encounter options like the somersault to slide kick, etc.) or the screen-filling specials in SoR1.

    • @perlichtman1562
      @perlichtman1562 2 роки тому +1

      I forgot to mention another pair of important differences in regards to the way encounters are approached in Final Vendetta as compared to Final Fight and Turtles in Time: the differing approaches to verticality.
      In Final Fight there’s a limited number approaches to verticality: standing to standing, limited single standing to air, quick air-to-air and air to standing.
      In Turtles in Time they add two more thanks to multiple consecutive attacks while in the air: sustained air-to-air and expanded air to standing.
      With Final Vendetta taking basically all the vertical types above and expanding with the addition of extended juggling and ground kick, we get new options (at least one of which isn’t in Shredder’s Revenge): standing to launch and standing juggle, standing to aerial juggle, standing to aerial juggle with ground kick follow-ups, standing to ground kick, etc.
      There’s a great deal of freedom to keep the combat entirely standing based, almost entirely in the air, some mixture or the two or a mixture of either (or both) with ground attacks. Plus with defensive guard options lacking from both Turtles in Time and Final Fight, a player can set the game to be more defensive/punish based as opposed to the more heavily “attack or evade” approach of Turtles in Time and Final Fight.

      I could agree a little but saying that the genre is popular again is an over statement. Looks like you are still not aware that First Person Shooter and RPGs are still the trend. • @PeteOliva
      @PeteOliva 2 роки тому

      @@awakenedsoul2638 Sure man, I’m not looking to argue this point too vigorously, I’m a 40-year-old fogey and I’m not that concerned with trends so much and I typically look at the industry through the eyes of people my age. But I’m FULLY aware that FPS competitive online shooters are the mainstream focus at the moment because I have been my school’s esports coach for a couple of years now and that’s what is the focus with the kiddos. But I think you would be surprised how much kids have gotten enamored with retro style games in the past few years. In fact, Streets of Rage 4 was one of the games I saw them playing amongst themselves most in the past years when they had downtime at tourneys.
      Popularity is a somewhat subjective thing in any case so I don’t see any point in arguing it, I just go by what I observe. If me acknowledging that it is growing in popularity vs. already being popular again now is what will make you happy, well, fine, I don’t think that’s an inaccurate statement either!

      Your last paragraph is the accurate one compared to your comment on this video, this is what I was telling you. See, we both know the truth. This is coming from a man who is not a professional gamer. Two more genres that are not main stream for more than a decade now, REAL TIME STRATEGY AND MOTORSPORT! RTS and racing games are in the same situation as Beat Em Up and Fighting. You, observing your kids, I do not know if they are really kids or at least teenagers or how young they are, is only a small population of players playing the niche game genres now a days. Yes fighting have an E-Sport and the E-Sport of RTS just died and racing is also niche now even though it is in E-Sports. ARTS and FPS is still dominant and any kind of RPGs. Both of us are in the same shoes but let me add more genres that should be more popular. If you want fighting and beat em up to become popular or you think it is popular now but I am telling you it is not there yet, I want Racing (Motorsport), Real Time Strategy (RTS), simulation games to become again main stream on PC because RTS and simulation where the shit back in the old days if you want to be a PC gamer and also HACK 'N' SLASH and vertical and horizontal shooters! These are the genres that big game companies disregard but was sooooo popular during the 80's and 90's. I am tired of the popular games on electronic sports now. I never played online RPGs and MOBA OR ARTS!

    This game looks very decent and good. I would have bought it for the asking price maybe 5 years ago; but since then we have gotten ports of all the best beat em ups this game tries to pay tribute to; as well as excellent originals and sequels to some of them (many of the ones you mentioned). While this game looks good; it really looks like an upper mid tier fan game; using the Beats of Rage Engine (which usually use alot of Neo Geo sprites and assets). At $7.99 I would have picked it up (maybe $12.99 because of the soundtrack); but at close to the price of Shredder's Revenge, Streets of Rage 4 and with River City Girl's 2 and TMNT Cowabunga Collection around the corner; I am going to forget about this game and wait for a deep sale. Even if I did buy it now; I rather be cycling through the games I mentioned (plus SOR4 is supposed to get another DLC patch update), making this game very poorly positioned this year.

      Bought this the same week as Shredder’s Revenge and I feel like they are both really different and worth the money. This is on a different level than a BoR game in regards to the cohesion as about the post-modern pastiche of many BoR games: it really nails the core of making a good game within Neo Geo limitations. Shredder’s Revenge tackles an entirely different design approach in regards to removing limitations, adding more collectibles, etc. and they feel completely different.

    The thing I like about this style of pixel art is the amount of detail. When you mentioned pixel art being overdone, the first thing I think of is a game with extremely tiny characters that you can barely see or used as an excuse to get lazy with them. This game is exactly what I would hope for.

    Neo Geo might be slim when it comes to beat 'em ups, but it has Sengoku 3, which is an amazing game. Super technical with a lot of room for creativity, my favourite game in the genre, easily.

      Basically it only has Sengoku 3, which is pretty rare given how late it was released in Neo Geo's lifespan. Robo Army kinda sucked, previous Sengokus as well, Mutation Nation is also pretty mediocre (but I love the music from the first level) and I think there's another pretty generic Streets of Rage clone that I don't remember the name of.

    This game looks fine. And I don't think I would mind the difficulty (though I'm not a fan of not having any options). But... what keeps me from getting the game is... the character designs. They just don't grab me. Most of the enemies look like they'd be more fun to play than the 3 heroes. And since there are only 3 characters to play, I'll just have to come back to it.
    But I'm glad we're getting more 2D Beat 'Em Ups these days. SoR4 and TMNT: Shredder's Revenge are the top 2 right now, with River City Girls 1 coming in 3rd for me. But I'm always looking for newer games in the genre to play.

Love the subtle diferecences, while it looks like final fight there is much more strategy and less cheap hits. I strongly agree with your points althoug there are a few things i don t like. The stage 4 boss is cheap. E grabs you throw you to the floor and then grabs you again unless you do a special. Also hate to being unable to use RB or lb for bloking. No, a beat 'em up this difficult would definitely *not* be remembered as among the greatest of its genre had it been released back in the 90s! One of the good things about the "Streets of Rage" trilogy (well, the Japanese version of SoR3) and the others greats at the time like "Final Fight 3" and "Turtles in Time" is that they're among the *exceptions* to high difficulty levels back then! Those games gradually raised their difficulty across the various levels, and if you get a friend to play with you, then it's not that hard to beat those games on the easiest difficulty level, and the games are so much better for it. If you want a challenge, then either play solo or crank up the difficulty level.

    This would have not sold more Neo Geo AES consoles. That's because the console cost $650, which around $1300 in today's money. On top of that a single game cartridge could run $200-$300. Slope, what made the Neo Geo AES fail was that it was way too expensive.

    • @Aldenfenris
      @Aldenfenris 2 роки тому

      Yeah, at least for the console market, it was clear it was more of an afterthought than a real attempt, the console itself was crazy priced, and so were the carts. (I mean, I get it, you are literally buying an arcade system for your home with a cart system) so it was all priced for arcade unfortunately.

    • @natsume-hime2473
      @natsume-hime2473 2 роки тому

      @@Aldenfenris What's fun is that the Neo Geo MVS cabinets used very similar cartridges. Functionally identical, just with a different edge connector. MVS cartridges were also less expensive, if you bought several at once. Which is why cartridge adapters started coming into being. Today AES cartridges are ridiculously expensive, because they're a rarer collector's item. On the other hand MVS cartridges are relatively inexpensive, because they're much more common. Plus there's a larger library of them that work on the AES, than the AES has access to in bespoke cartridges. So having an MVS to AES cartridge adapter is almost mandatory if you have an AES console.

    • @perlichtman1562
      @perlichtman1562 2 роки тому

      The cartridge price was more of an issue than the system. I had both a 3DO and a PS3 at their launch prices but the games were so much cheaper than AES ones.

    I never understood why these pixel art games are far more pixellated than games such as Final Fight and Street Fighter 2. Maybe they are more inspired by the Neo-Geo but games on that system are far more contain attention to detail on the graphical front that making the majority of games on that system more compelling. Look at Metal Slug as a great example. I don't understand why many companies decide to make pixel art games graphics so thick and not as graphically attentive.

      It’s less in the style of Metal Slug (with the smaller character sprites) and more in the style of some of the mid-90s Neo Geo fighting games. There needs to be more big-box physical releases for modern games, they always look amazing.
    Nice lookin' merch and such advertised in those lil slips that came with that special edition, for somethin' that's having that level of time and cash invested I would've expected 'em to push this game/market it/etc. waaaaay more. Outside of the times Final Vendetta has been shown off on this channel I haven't seen it anywhere else, would have no idea it'd exist otherwise. Battle Axe looked dope too, still needa nab that sometime.
    TM.NT seems like the pick-up-and-play style while this seems like it's more of a slog, cool to have both sides of the coin out at the same time. I barely ever remember to dodge and block in these games though so I'd get destroyed haha. Only so much I can keep dying in these sorta games before I give up. No training mode til later, kinda...too much throwing you in the deep end. Wouldn't use it after playing the actual game too, just Googling the moves instead haha. Chain system looks cool, buuut would be cool if it had more multi-combo and juggling stuff. Wouldn't quite fit the 90's-made-game style they're going for though. Which is a neat sorta philosophy to go with but can be detrimental at times.
    That music though, damn nice. Noice noice noice. Graphics look good too despite the shadows look a bit off, especially as you jump on the car. But I love the animation and sprite shading too. Like ye said, the backgrounds could do with a bit of added animation though. The game's kinda pricey over here too, TMNT was the same. Woulda been cool to pick both up buuut they would've needed to be a bit cheaper. Ended up goin' with Turtles due to the online multiplayer buuuut if this goes on sale sometime I'd jump in.
    Good video this, all round great stuff.

    I absolutely love this game! The difficulty level is just right. I’m so happy there are no continues- if you just want to blindly button mash and keep feeding in continues to get to the end you should just play something more straightforward. Also no online-co-op? Yeah, how „retro“ of you, game. Thank god for SharePlay, but this option should’ve been in there. Yes, other (and probably better) games like THE TAKEOVER didn’t have it either, but then again, they also hadn’t this much of an annoying attitude when it came to their gameplay.

    • @perlichtman1562
      @perlichtman1562 2 роки тому +1

      Luckily the update released soon after that made the training mode available from the start, unlocked a new casual difficulty and added a stage select for starting on a different level as you progress in the game (even on hard mode).
      Regarding The Takeover, they each have different strengths and weaknesses. Final Vendetta has much tighter movement controls, pixel art with better animation as opposed to 3D graphics, a more consistent soundtrack and better pacing with no filler, no trash mobs or load time issues like The Takeover (I’m comparing on Switch). The Takeover has a wider variety of levels, a wider variety of gameplay types (two types of vehicle shooter bonus levels), more dynamic backgrounds and possibly a bit stronger sense of impact in the hits - plus multiple endings. I personally enjoy both for different reasons but I was going purely off of the tightness of the core controls I would give the edge to Final Vendetta.

It is shame that soundtracks could not come with variations to suit different musical tastes, which would make the overall experience one that really could get close to pleasing all the people all of the time.

      @@jc_dogen So what? There's only two difficulty levels in the version I played (Easy and Hard) and I don't think they're so different between each other that it justifies LOCKING THE TRAINING MODE BEHIND BEATING THE GAME.

    No online multiplayer? Would be nice to play with friends or randoms online.

    Did they patch the game easier? You can now also access trainings mode from the beginning. I got to the 4th level on hard the very first try and I played it through at the third time. Every reviewer was mentioning the difficulty but I found the game rather on the easy side. Especially the bosses are no challenge. I can't think of any old school arcade game I'd finish with only three credits. Anyway great game nevertheless.
