PLEASE KEEP IN MIND when you are watching my videos: I am showing you the least expensive, quickest "backyard" methods for repairing or servicing your lawnmower. Replacing all components such as gaskets and fuel lines is always recommended when rebuilding or repairing equipment. With these videos I hope you are able to fix and repair your lawnmower yourself with minimal parts, knowledge and tools. Thank you for watching!
appreciate you started off with; "not sure what i am doing, but..." gives us all hope to learn a little something. well done
Been working on these mowers for over 20 years, excellent mowers. Built to last. Better than almost every mower made on the market today!
Those GXV engines will run forever!
Great video!
I have one in my shop currently. After it warms up there is excessive oil blow by out the crankcase breather tube. It starts on the first pull. I have checked compression cold and hot and it is 75-80 psi. When engaging the blades it struggles to stay running. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Nice job Jeff. Honda's are great but can be hard to work on sometimes, especially the ones with internal belts that you have to split the case to replace. Thanks for the video's.
I have the later model version of this mower the Honda HRC216K1HXA (GXV160) and one day it ran out of control really high revs I thought it was gonna blow from the sound of it. I tried adjusting the governor arm like how you did but that didn’t help. So hopefully it’s the same procedure as in this video. Thanks for video and let’s see if this will help me fix my mower.
Nice ... great feeling when you pull thst cord and it starts straight up 😀👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
One of my HR215 governor arm did not move at all ,I will have to change governor gear ,while open it i will change rings also . Thank for very detail video .
thanks for taking the time, great video!
Half moon key=woodruff key, those things are a pain.... Great fix and video
Great video Jeff.
I got the same engine on my old mower. I just changed the rear drive wheels on it . I rocked it till the wheels fell off !! LOL . Well the rubber tires anyways. Now I have to tear it down and replace the rings and valve guide seals because it started to smoke on startup pretty bad but clears up after it runs for a few minutes.
Good job on this engine. People taking shots at you for how much work it is to put one back together..... but if you owned one of these engines you know that they will last 20 to 30 years taking care of properly. Mine is a 95 model and runs as good as it did the day it was new.
I agree!
Nicely done!
thanks man!
First pull,that makes your day.
One of the best and helpful videos I’ve seen, thank you for taking the time to, share this repair, I have two of those mowers, those are the same model, they’re both running perfect but after watching your video, I won’t be afraid to fix it if needed. Thank you Jeff.
Thank you!
good job jeff
Thanks MM
Good video
Nice video pal. My Lawnflight mower looks just the same. Its nice to see the inner workings. Could the Black bits be coming off the Black drive gear. Were there any teeth missing
Jeff, I believe the part that caused the problem is the oil defense pipe. It is part# 12385-ZE6-000. It can fall out and it goes into the upper half of the cylinder head. Their is a little clip that can bend and come loose when you separate the engine. I don't see one on yours when you put the engine back together. Take care and great video by the way.
Yes you right !
Good catch !
You are right! It must be. Somethimes it can loose inside, unleash and crashes. Maybe some glue helps...
I dont know the function of it, a little bit mysterious for me, but goes from the pan to the cylinder
@@szepkeify it must be to either restrict or encourage oil distribution
FIRST pull starting like my Preditor engines
I've enjoyed both of these videos. I busted a GXV140 on this same mower by running it dry somehow. Never blew smoke or leaked any. One day it kept stopping, I'd wait and restart. Thought it was heat soaked or something. And then after realizing it was dry (and basically, now seized) I added oil and slowly turned the engine with a ratchet and socket from the top until the oil worked through enough to start ... and it did ... and it ran great for about 10 minutes until it came apart inside. It starting clanking and rattling like crazy until I killed the ignition.
I have yet to take it apart but fully expect to find the rod end cap (or more) in pieces. You pull on the rope now and it freewheels ... ain't nothing connected inside.
I'd like to replace the parts but don't know if I heat-damaged other parts that might "look" OK. A project for another day.
thanks for the comment
Those old Hondas always crack me up. When you engage the blade, the engine nearly dies. NO grass cutting torque.
Thanks!
I don't know about Honda, but Briggs and Stratton had a plastic ring to sling oil around the crankcase.
Since you never identified where it came from,do you thinking that could have been the source?
I notice you don’t have a lift table for your lawnmower work. My back would be killing me. Great job on your videos Jeff
yes I need more work benches! thanks for watching
That is identical to my lawnmower I’ve had since 1995! It is still working.
I suspect you noticed that the driveshaft cover was not in place when you did the demo at the end?
Thanks for your video Jeff, Do you know by chance the correct size of the drive shaft roller pin? Many thanks
sorry no
Replace a exhaust value on a 5.0 Honda power washer
LONG stem cotton swabs are good for that
Happy New Year Jeff. Tough job on this Honda from 2 years ago. Hope you charged accordingly! What ended up being the black plastic stuff?
I found out after wards that it was an oil pickup device/tube of some sort, I never installed a new one and luckily the mower is still doing good.
Super cool repair. Did you ever find out where the little plastic bits came from?
Nope. I think it must have been part of a funnel or something that got in through the oil spout
@@JeffsLittleEngineService I think it was the oil pick up tube, I am redoing the same mower. I didn't see a pick up tube in yours, but mine does and its black and plastic
Jeff. My lower engine seal has blown and oil was pouring out. My question is can the lower seal be replaced without taking oil pan off. Is there a way to pull that seal and replace without taking the oil pan off.
yes but it is more difficult that way
The torque specs for the pan and head is 8.7 Lbs/Ft
Thanks friend
i can tell he has never done a clutch brake on one of these before, put the bracket for the cable on the engine without the cable first, put the first part with the springs and turn it to expand the springs then push it up to lock it in behind the cable holder all at one time, hard to explain but i have been doing these engines since the 80s and what he did was was wrong, even the the two return clutch springs have different ends for this purpose of going around the 10mm bolt with round spacer . its all about the details
at 9:44 there is a gear that drives the output shaft
Great video Jeff. Any chance part of that oil spout broke off?
it didn't look like it did
@@JeffsLittleEngineService Just a wild guess. Very odd. Great videos!
Hi Jeff I have a Honda with the high rev problem. How much time did you spend on the whole job? I f you have to charge a customer, is it worth repairing? BTW, great video.
good question! I remember that I filmed this video for education purposes. I knew it was not going to pay well as I spent several hours working on it. I charged the customer much less than the time I had in it but I got to see the inside of this particular style of engine.
Just curios what was the plastic from?
I found out afterward that the plastc part was called an oil defense pipe and they come loose often. Not really sure what it does maybe helps with oil distibution throughout the engine. ..
why the white dot on that oil seal ???
good video
I don't know
Why is the governor gear made of plastic?
not sure.... maybe so only that gear wears out
You should advertise it as commercial honda mower for $500
So where were the plastic pieces from? Great video, btw.
It is still a mystery. Whatever it was It must have got in there through the oil spout
@@JeffsLittleEngineService Maybe the lid off of a bottle of oil?
@@JeffsLittleEngineService Could the oil fill tube been broken off and fell down in the engine and replaced?

Christine Henderson hit it on the head there is an oil defense pipe that goes up there and it fell out and ground it up. I don't know if it will get enough lubrication that the governor to survive or not
Hey Jeff, you should have used that toothbrush on the governor's teeth.
Mystery Plastic....plastic ring from an oil bottle?? Just a guess.
Now hand the customer a $1000 bill for parts and labor on his $450 mower. Lmfao
$150.00 total. I charged less than normal because I received an education that I needed.
@@JeffsLittleEngineService - Thats really cheap Jeff. After parts and shop supplies your probably only putting a $100 in your pocket.
you are right it was $100.00 labor (too cheap). It probably took me 3-4 hours total to repair. But I had the time and I wanted to see inside a Honda engine. I have never opened one up.(the customer was very patient, I had it for almost 3 months!)
you think maybe the black plastic pieces came from the black plastic drive gear
There is no black plastic drive gear inside this engine
@@JeffsLittleEngineService I think he meant the output gear for the rear wheel drive next to the governor, you didn't spin the gear around to see if it wasn't missing any pieces.
that bracket is not tricky at the 24 minute mark, put it on first before you even start to assemble the clutch and the two clutch springs with the one end being longer goes on the bolts with the spacer not they way you did it, look what he went thru trying to put the bracket on after the fact, totally wrong way to do that, i assemble these clutches with my eyes closed and its very easy to do, if it is done correctly
Can you elaborate a bit more? Just curious. About to do this myself
@@johnh9507 I see what you mean now Thanks
@@ItsCalvin7 I edited a couple of my comments to make it more clear sorry
I think that mower is supposed to have two blades!
Only for mulching when you're in the discharge mode into a bag or on the ground it's oneblade. It's called a hi-lift blade
you are very good at making videos so as not to show your face.I don't recollect a video where your face is shown but the chickens make up for it I guess.
PREDATOR ENGINE Cloned from This ONE !!!!!
MUCH BETTER with BALL BEARING CRANKSHAFT and CAST IRON LINER
CHINESE CLONE Engines are VERY GOOD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Honda Engines OVERATED
I think they cloned the 160; that one got the ball bearing crank bearing.
@@thenexthobby YES you are Correct - Chinese Clone Engines Much better than Honda GCV160
Honda GS Engines the Best 2 ball Bearngs
The only vertical shaft predator makes is the 173cc it has bushings on the crank the only ones that have ball bearings are the gx series not the gxv's even the vtwin doesnt have ball bearings
Hit me up ik alot about this stuff
