- I make a useful item from a very soft piece of mystery steel.

Thanks!
You generous donation is greatly appreciated. Gas tank is full and my stomach too! Thanks so much Ron 😬
I don’t normally like skull designs but yours is pretty neat. Merry Christmas 🇺🇸🇨🇦🇺🇸
I wanted a friendly, simple looking skull and so drew this up myself. Glad you like it and I hope you're having a great holiday season.
Also, usually sharp corners on the slitter is not the best idea, because while drifting the resulting hole that sharp corners are the risk of breaking the thing you are making - that sharp corners of the hole are stress points and also potential coldshut places.
That's a good point. I need to ease those edges. Thanks.
⭕️should have brass brushed over your mark..
would be your complete signature on that opener. nice work
Your wish is my command. I made a second, better bottle opener from the mystery steel and did the old brass brush thing. I'll maybe quickly show that in my next video. Thanks.
Happy New Year!
Happy New Year to you and all 🌠
Happy New year Glen….wishing you a safe and healthy year. Maybe the Yanks will better this year! Steve B.
Hey Steve, Happy belated New Year wishes to you. The Yanks have hope, I think...
Merry Christmas to you and your family
A belated Merry Christmas to you and yours as well. Hope you're having a great holiday season. Thanks.
Happy Holidays!
Hope you're having a great holiday season.
Good post Glen! I hope your Christmas was enjoyable and your New Year is happy and prosperous!
Same to you my friend. 🎄
You are correct. 12L14 is a lead infused steel for screw cutting. It is a dream to machine on a lathe. I would have busted the top right out of there. 😂😂😂
That you mention 12L14 makes me think that is exactly what this is. It qualifies as steel but sure it soft to hammer. I'm still investigating so thanks.
@@gstongs happy new year Glen
Sheesh, if you can't trust your steel dealer, who can you trust? That's why I buy my high carbon stuff from well-known, reputable dealers. If I want mystery steel, I get it from friends who do heavy equipment repair.
Even reputable dealers sell their “scraps”, or the odds and ends of the large steel stock they cut. Usually it’s sold to us.
I’m always nervous about buying those odds and ends, even if they are high carbon etc. Seems too east for an “H13” piece to end up in a “306” pile, or any other possible combination.
I've since gone back to my old supplier. Live and learn.
Very good point about "scraps". Thanks for sharing.
Who makes your markers? Thanks. Your an incredible craftsman
A professional engraver here in Taiwan makes the logo / maker marks. Thanks for watching and for your kind comment.
Just sent you some Scooter gas money. MERRY CHRISTMAS friend.
Merry Christmas Ron. And I think 2024 will be a very good year. Thanks for all your generosity. Glen
I watch black bear for and have for a lot of years. Not all his punches are S2 steel(that he uses). And when using softer steel punches he has a can of water right there and dips it constantly to keep the punch cool so it doesn’t soften from over heating. I never see you do that. May want to try. They may last longer
Yeah, I have a slack tub of water right near me but rarely show that. I will be sure to give a wider view sometimes when doing operations like this / punch using, etc. Thanks.
Yeah we can't feel when u hammer but bsure can tell from the sound of it.
Yes, the sound is certainly different. Thanks.
are u making hole punches with a longer taper now? it looks a good bit more then mine i got from u i need one like that
Hi, I'm not specifically making longer, hand held punches unless someone requests them. Thanks.
@@gstongs I would want one with a 1/2 inch longer taper so they last longer after few dress ups they have to be made into a drift almost at least when I use them haha I sand the sides of them so it doesn’t make a huge hole. Overall a great tool. Only one available like it. Can’t beat a machine tool made perfectly.
This pieces of mystery steel looks quite fat, you could make a small tongs out of the rest of them.
That's not a bad idea. Would be very easy to draw the reins out. Thanks.
h13 air hardens btw
Yes Wesley, I'm well aware that H13 is an air hardening steel. Thanks.
nice work glen! happy new year from france !
Happy New Year to you in La France. I love the French language and French literature from decades past. Thanks Kirk.
Happy Holidays, Glen🥂🍾
Happy Holidays Scott 🎄
Glad you found a use for the mystery steel. I like the Bud Light comment, haha
I'm glad you and the gentleman right before you in the comment section caught that. I do have a sense of humor... Thanks Scott.
happy winter festival, that is some very soft steel, well done for finding a good use for it.
Really soft stuff. I made a second, better bottle opener with this same steel. Fun to hammer on but terrible for punches. Thanks.
Bud lite step aside!!!! Bwahahaha! Loved it!!!
I thought someone would comment on that and that person is you my friend. Glad you liked that. 😬
I once tried quenching in deer fat to see if it would work ... still undecided as the metal i was useing was not hardenable or least not what i was looking for. But didnt know that at the time so once i find the metal im looking for ill try again. Sure smelled good while quenching tho ..
That's very interesting. Thanks for sharing.
turned out good, happy new year Glen
Thanks and have a great holiday season.
You must have got a carbon steel, not an H style steel
If this is carbon steel, it's low, super low... I really think it's got lead added and someone said it could be 12L14 which is exactly that. Thanks.
Hoegaarden is good beer.
Yeah, not bad beer. The white wheat version with a slice of orange is good. Thanks.
🎄🎄👍🎄🎄
Happy Holidays to you. 🌠
