      I wanted a friendly, simple looking skull and so drew this up myself. Glad you like it and I hope you're having a great holiday season.

    Also, usually sharp corners on the slitter is not the best idea, because while drifting the resulting hole that sharp corners are the risk of breaking the thing you are making - that sharp corners of the hole are stress points and also potential coldshut places.

      That's a good point. I need to ease those edges. Thanks.

    ⭕️should have brass brushed over your mark..
    would be your complete signature on that opener. nice work

      Your wish is my command. I made a second, better bottle opener from the mystery steel and did the old brass brush thing. I'll maybe quickly show that in my next video. Thanks.

    You are correct. 12L14 is a lead infused steel for screw cutting. It is a dream to machine on a lathe. I would have busted the top right out of there. 😂😂😂

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  9 місяців тому +2

      That you mention 12L14 makes me think that is exactly what this is. It qualifies as steel but sure it soft to hammer. I'm still investigating so thanks.

    Sheesh, if you can't trust your steel dealer, who can you trust? That's why I buy my high carbon stuff from well-known, reputable dealers. If I want mystery steel, I get it from friends who do heavy equipment repair.

    • @RoscoPColetraneIII
      @RoscoPColetraneIII 9 місяців тому +1

      Even reputable dealers sell their “scraps”, or the odds and ends of the large steel stock they cut. Usually it’s sold to us.
      I’m always nervous about buying those odds and ends, even if they are high carbon etc. Seems too east for an “H13” piece to end up in a “306” pile, or any other possible combination.

    I watch black bear for and have for a lot of years. Not all his punches are S2 steel(that he uses). And when using softer steel punches he has a can of water right there and dips it constantly to keep the punch cool so it doesn’t soften from over heating. I never see you do that. May want to try. They may last longer

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  9 місяців тому +1

      Yeah, I have a slack tub of water right near me but rarely show that. I will be sure to give a wider view sometimes when doing operations like this / punch using, etc. Thanks.

    • @FunHobbies225
      @FunHobbies225 8 місяців тому

      @@gstongs I would want one with a 1/2 inch longer taper so they last longer after few dress ups they have to be made into a drift almost at least when I use them haha I sand the sides of them so it doesn’t make a huge hole. Overall a great tool. Only one available like it. Can’t beat a machine tool made perfectly.

    This pieces of mystery steel looks quite fat, you could make a small tongs out of the rest of them.

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  9 місяців тому

    I once tried quenching in deer fat to see if it would work ... still undecided as the metal i was useing was not hardenable or least not what i was looking for. But didnt know that at the time so once i find the metal im looking for ill try again. Sure smelled good while quenching tho ..

    • @gstongs

      If this is carbon steel, it's low, super low... I really think it's got lead added and someone said it could be 12L14 which is exactly that. Thanks.
