Thank you, solved my problem with your clear and detailed video on the Celica ignition problem. I needed the details, as an old retired mechanic, did a 5 year apprenticeship as a motor mechanic in Australia, leaving tech school in at age 14, grade 9. Short history, did a few years as a trucker for my brother, including building my own tractor/prime mover out of parts, 1955 Federal, 3-71 GM Diesel, Leyland 6 Sp Constant Mesh box and 2 sp diff.... then further education in the trade, Australia and Canada, ending as a Tech College instructor in Auto and Heavy Duty Mechanics after a couple of years of University. Ending my mechanic career in 1985 I was a bit short on the technological detail of the more modern electronics, the fuel side I was ok with, working with Renault Canada back in the 1970's, I was lucky to have some Bosch electronic fuel injection training, built on that over the years but not enough as I got into computers in 1985. When our long term family 1996 Toyota Celica, Australian version suddenly quit, I needed help as I knew where the problem was by deduction, but not exactly which component. Your sketches of the circuitry and theory filled in the blanks and put me on the correct track.... you have an excellent communication ability and persona! Hello, I am Yasser from the Sultanate of Oman. I enjoy a lot of what it offers to society. You are a positive person and transmit positive energy. Continue and we are your students.
Thanks for the information on how far a good spark will jump from the coil. I've bought an aftermarket distributor assembly, a salvaged distributor, and now am getting into multimeters to diagnose if my ignitor is bad on a 97 Corolla. This whole time the spark from the distributor was weak on every coil I've installed. The tough part about testing the ignitor is that my local store oriely's doesn't have a connector for this ignitor. It's time I order a genuine Toyota coil. My original distributor had an oil leak in it as well. I'm guessing that is what made the secondary short in the coil. This is by far the best explanation I've seen of how these systems work.
Great job. I don't think I need to tell you not to sweat the goof-ups because they're more common than people are willing to admit. Frustration gets the best of me, too. It may take a bit longer than I like, but I have to step back or away when I start feeling upset and organize parts I'm removing. Love the outtakes. When I was little I connected two 9 volt batteries together to play with. They were almost dead so they didn't blow, but to my surprise they got a little warm.
Hey, brother don't apologize to the haters, anyone that hates on you are so brain dead they are not qualified to speak. Just do what you do and those of us who can recognize a competent, wise and knowledgeable instructor will listen with both ears!!!
Yea DAN is the man LOL Sorry Mr danner couldn't resist that may have been from part 1 please keep posting your awesome video's. I`m car electrician myself and this is the real repair process sometimes where there is some fun and some things just go wrong. Thanks for funny and realistic video !!
Hey Paul, that was just plain a fun video to watch! Caleb (hope I spelled that right) you have no idea how fortunate you are to have a dad you can learn from AND hang out with ( my dad sang in a choir) . You two look like you have a blast together! Must have been fun doing the editing together! Great way to end a video! Thanks for sharing! Very cool to meet Jake too!
wow, I know the reason why I finally ended up here, yet never expected to end up HERE. THis is so educative and entertaining. The scans are above my head, yet the testing I sort of get. Got a good idea how to deal with my 97 CArine e now. Thanks a lot!! EDit: forgot to say, I always put the part I took off in a plastic transparent bag :)
Thanks so much! I'd be more than happy to help you with whatever you're fighting too. As long as you have a test light and or voltmeter to do some checks. And yeah, I bolted the bad part right back on didn't I! Haha
LMAO oh I fucking love it keep all the bloopers on reel. Nah man that's when learning gets a little funner when there little small mishaps. Dude this is one of the best vids you've done to date!!! Two thumbs up brother.
I’ve watched a few of your videos….this is the one that sold me…nice to see mistakes and different approaches to an issue…you are the real deal. Thank You.
Thanks man. What most people may not know is we film live. We don't figure out the problem first, then turn the camera on. We just turn it on and go! Sure it makes my videos longer, but we think it helps to show the process, and include the screw ups too!
I want to thank you so much scannerdanner my 97 Toyota Tacoma 2.4 did the same thing and worked on it for three weeks seen your video and got it going you kick ass thanks a million!!!!
Thank you very much for such informative videos. My Corolla has been giving problems starting for a few seconds then cutting the engine off. I suspected the ignition coil, I have replaced the condenser and igniter. I am going to replace the coil tomorrow. Now I know why my plugs and pistons were flooded. Thanks for teaching us Sir. Tony South Africa
Hi Paul, I liked both part 1 and 2. Forget about the haters, majority of us watching are learning and applying. So keep that spirit of teaching and I'll make sure I keep up with you. 😁😅👍🏽
Watching you guys diagnosing and repairing was very interesting. And when the engine finally started - big smile on my face. Thanks for the educational content.
the igniter will never fail on these 80's and 90's toyotas especially on "2A 3A and 3 A-C" carbureted engines(starting 1983) , igniter on "4" series is the same tough it is 1/4" more in height it fits in "3" series " Integrated Ignition Assembly aka IIA " !!, moisture and condensation will corrode the outside resistor wich you can solder a new one worth 10 cents , japanese products from that era were top of the line for quality , great video
Thank u so much Paul... This is my first video from u(part 1and 2) U really opened my eyes all along i have been blind.. I have been watching many videos on UA-cam but urs is just on point... Here in uganda (east Africa) am a beginner technician who lacks tools(equipment) but i thank God i get such super knowledge from guys like u... Am young and looking forward to be agreat technician in future like u Paul😀😀😀.... Thank u paul through you am getting experience
Just what I was looking for. Diagnosing some ignition issues on a 94 Corolla. Really appreciate the additional insights more than "check this check this check this, yup thats it."
First, thank you for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us. I had a intrest in being a auto mechanic and now the diagnostic portion of the equation is what really peaks my intrest now. I will be buying your book soon. Second, I love the home video's of you working with your children. Bring back great memories of my father and the fun we had working on my truck. Just like you, having your oldest lick a 9v battery...lol , my father installed a electrical wire on the bottom of our fence to keep our dog from diging under it. I bet you know where this is going.lol well he asked me to test it with a metal rod he just so happened to have with him. I remember asking will I get shocked, and his answer was " well thats why we test it". I did and I got shocked.lol Tell Jake don't feel to bad, I cried too.lol Thanks for the laughs.
Thanks for this 2 parter Paul. I come to this site almost everyday to see what's new. I've watched enough of your videos that I should have caught the fact that there was no coil ring at the beginning of the charge ramp but i didn't see it until you pointed it out. Great video as always. tony
I have the same 7AFE in my 95 Celica. Your vids are very informative. Even though I haven't had an engine problem in 11 years (except 02 sensor), these will help when issues start
Awesome video Paul, great father/ son bonding as well. Laughed my ass off when you put the old coil back on, been there done that too. Love the way you talk about the circuit with the diagram, you really make it easy to understand. Can't believe you have haters, best automotive repair channel on you tube. Ignore them, they are losers. Most of them probably couldn't do what you do if their lives depended on it. I really appreciate your videos as do my students. When ever I need a video to show in class, your channel is the only one I go to. Looking forward to the next one, and thank you for the great content.
Hello Paul, Oil in the distributor is most likely oil seal on the bottom of the shaft. I changed the seal on the distributor on my own car 96 Corolla. It only cost $5 and a little of free time. Thanks for the videos, I always enjoy watching your videos.
Noel Hernandez I did the same to my car. But if the seal isn't failing from becoming hardened, then the cause would be worn bearings in the distributor because the extra play will cause the seal to widen and cause a leak.
I have been fighting with my ignition, I will have to see if it gives ANY spark the way you showed with the bad coil. The previous owner of my 95 corolla put on one of those k&n air filters. I doubt it does anything for power but it DOES make the air intake system easier to remove for access to other stuff.
Paul I love your videos and appreciate that even someone as skilled as you and with so much love and so many followers still has to deal with the 1% of haters you get in the comments =P You don't deserve them but its great to know that I'm not alone in that regard!
ScannerDanner No way! We all make mistakes sometimes people online are way too harsh, you are inspiring and offer so much to people that want to learn, have a great attitude and we should all be grateful!
GearHeads The mistakes and bloopers are what make you human, keep you humble and give you something to learn. How boring would it be if everything we did was spot on picture perfect. Besides, laughing is good for the soul. 😉 What an amazing teacher. We’ve been blessed for sure.👍
Thanks sr you just saved me $200 dollars. I just returned the distributor assembly and got the ignition coil for 45 dollars and 💥 💥 the spark ⚡️ issue is solved. Thanks again! 😅
Very intuitive video Paul, I'm facing the same type of problem on the nissan sentra 2006 of a friend. Not starting. Fuel pump ok, spark plug are ok, we replaced the crankshaft position sensor, no change. We are facing a wall right now...
¿Devolvieron la bobina dañada? LOL. es bueno compartir con nuestros hijos ... ¡excelente amigo de video paul! ¡Saludos y muchas bendiciones para ti y tu familia!
You are tops Sir love working on cars. And now watching videos.. i have an 88 Corolla sr5 i had gone through 3 coils after head gasket and timing belt replacment. Now i can move on to carb rebuild 😊
Caleb you are doing a bang up job on the editing. It makes a real difference, for me anyway, when you do that picture in picture close up stuff. I love the outtakes too. Oh yea and Paul your doing a good job too. Lol
Paul great video man, hangin with your boys is what life is all about, I got 2 there a little young (9 & 6) but they always find there way in the garage when I'm working on something and I love it!
Awesome video Paul, great to see your interaction with Kalib, he"ll be Scannerdanner II soon. I like the way you emphasized that the CPU was receiving good Cam & Crank signals by monitoring RPM gauge and confirming Injectors being activated. Also, was neat you found out that the injectors fired in pairs, while monitoring the both pins on the injector with test light to ground, the other paired injector was activated!! Real cool. Keep up the great work Paul, look forward to more videos with you and Scannerdanner II 🙂
I remember having an older Toyota in the shop for rough running and stalling. Found there was a crack in the epoxy in the coil and when it got hot I'm pretty sure it would arc back into itself.
Did they put the damaged coil back? LOL. it's nice to share with our children ... excellent video paul friend !!! Greetings and many blessings for you and your family!
tq for this video,.glad you are still using the old school method without the fancy tools.i was hopping you do the coil primary secondary resistance checking before putting the new one.
Paul I searched on eBay UK version and there is an air intake and box for the Celica for sale $79 australian dollars. It's in new south Wales. Hope your eBay can find it! Good video I actually like it when you mess up, it's always satisfying when someone smarter than myself has a moment ☺
Thank you so much! This is what motivates me more than anything else I do. To help others, to change peoples lives. Everything else is b.s. (money, wealth, fame)
Excellent video set, Paul. Many of us work on old cars like this and we try to replace only what is proven bad, for the same reasons in your video. That work flow wouldn't be appropriate in a professional setting, because the chance of a callback or misadventure is higher. We don't have to pay for labor, and we're able to go further if the vehicle has persistent problems, without criticizing the shop in the local coffee house.
Personally I don't give a crap about bad comments I've been using a lab scope whenever analog back in the early 1980s short of using a sun ignition scope in the 70's 51+ years under the belt 35+ ASE Master tech I am now semi-retired I will use my launch on a tech to tech basis I do appreciate that you do this on UA-cam yeah she do a great job of explaining and showing
That jumper's alligator clip is biting you because you made Jake lick a 9 volt battery when he was young 😄. Anyway, this was a great video, I am a modern day technician who can understand new car technology and work and diagnose them with ease, yet I only know the basics on older cars and I refuse to work on them. After this video I knew a lot about igniters and distributors systems and can work on older cars a little bit with ease. Thank you very much.
One thing I noticed when you were changing the coil, that may make things easier for you, is after you break loose the nuts on the wires connected to the igniter and the other wire. You could come around and break loose your Phillips head screws, take the screws out, and in your hand you can spin off the nuts to the igniter and the other wire. When putting it back on reverse the process. Seemed like you may would be easier to handle and maybe faster.
Fantastic job on the explanation. As an algebra teacher, this explanation was top notch. This is my channel of choice for learning systems. I wish I could work life on the field with you.
Thanks so much man! I got as far as algebra 1 then quit trying in school (home life stuff directed my course) I really wish I could turn back the clock and have applied myself in high school. Physics, math, science, chemistry, all stuff I need more knowledge in. Paying for my poor choices for sure.
My wife was just laughing hysterically because you recited verbatim what I was saying about that aftermarket intake pipe there as we were watching the video, lol! We say the same things about certain parts or brands (stupid Ford! stupid intake pipe, lol) too. I am also famous for doing EXACTLY what you did when swapping parts from a parts vehicle to my own driver - take one part off, have both on bench, then get sidetracked and install the wrong part - gotta love doing things twice! She thinks we may be related. 😁 Sorry man! 😂 Great vid. I've never worked on older Japanese cars, so that coil setup was new to me. Was a great learning experience (as always!), along with a top-notch refresher for me on troubleshooting. Thanks for another great one! 👍

I had the pleasure of trying to diagnose what was wrong with my 7AFE lean burn in my AT191 Carina. I was getting spark but not at the plugs. I figured weak spark like you had said. I was getting no codes or anything. Come to find out the rotor went bad out of nowhere! It wasn't broken or anything. I still don't know what the hell is going on. It was a 6 month old BWD rotor too and I have been using them for years without issue. So if you're getting a healty spark like this but not at the plugs, you got a bad rotor I bet! Buy OEM only!
Well fitted a new coil , cost £20 delivered by Royal mail to my front door ! Fixed the problem , Yipee! I found those four small screws which hold the coil in place were hell to remove, must have been fixed in with "Locktite ".😃😃
Looking on my garage shelves i found an older identical coil it was made in Japan but again by Bosch., the latest also by Bosch but in China. Now!! this means that I did some years back replace the coil and I do have vague memories of doing so , also of spark plug leads. So this Carina since new and now with about 83000 miles on the clock is on its third coil. Is this usual ?
Just did a Toyota 2E headgasket replacement... Car was towed to me so i dont know the full health of the engin..... Car just cranks but dont start at all..... Gona do that coil test now to see if its good.... Just waiting for the battery to be fully charge..... Hopefully this will resolves the issue

here that one all day at wok "I could do that in 5 minutes!" haha have to remember your comments. Funny thing, I've learned more from you than working at a dealership and going to tech school drivability classes!! Still young, but determined. Thank you so much
Hello, I am Yasser from the Sultanate of Oman. I enjoy a lot of what it offers to society. You are a positive person and transmit positive energy. Continue and we are your students.
Thank you brother
Nice to see a distributer system for a change! Great troubleshooting with your son. There are no mistakes, just learning opportunities!! God bless.
Thanks Jake!
Hey, brother don't apologize to the haters, anyone that hates on you are so brain dead they are not qualified to speak.
Just do what you do and those of us who can recognize a competent, wise and knowledgeable instructor will listen with both ears!!!
Thanks for the reminder. Funny how loud the 1 comment out of a thousand is.
Sure does!
I'm a new sub and I can tell just from watching a few of your vids you know what you're doing.
Yea DAN is the man LOL
Sorry Mr danner couldn't resist that may have been from part 1 please keep posting your awesome video's. I bought your book can't find the Damn thing now but I will. we love your stuff I will be getting back on your premium channel I was before you tube took it off. Thanks 4 posting
Thank you so much, was stuck and on the verge of buying a new distributor. Changed the coil, plugs and wires, we're up and running. Thanks again..
Awesome video! Those kids are fortunate to have a dad like you. Must feel good to have a son that is into it with you too. Thanks for sharing guys!
wow, I know the reason why I finally ended up here, yet never expected to end up HERE.
Sure it makes my videos longer, but we think it helps to show the process, and include the screw ups too!
without a doubt ...the realist car guy on you tube...warts n all included in this vid.
thanks buddy
Your a legend Paul, a proper diagnostics technician
Thanks Simon but I'm not. Just blessed to be able to share what I love to do.
Thanks Paul and your knowledge is well appreciated, all the way from Ireland
With your family!!!! It can't get any better. Thanks master Danner.
I did and I got shocked.lol Tell Jake don't feel to bad, I cried too.lol
Thanks for the laughs.
Thanks so much man! Really cool to hear that you are an instructor and are able to use my material for your class. God bless you man
Hello Paul, Oil in the distributor is most likely oil seal on the bottom of the shaft.
Didn't know there was a seal that could be changed. And good tip on the worn distributor bushing or bearing.
I have been fighting with my ignition, I will have to see if it gives ANY spark the way you showed with the bad coil.
The previous owner of my 95 corolla put on one of those k&n air filters. I doubt it does anything for power but it DOES make the air intake system easier to remove for access to other stuff.
Paul I love your videos and appreciate that even someone as skilled as you and with so much love and so many followers still has to deal with the 1% of haters you get in the comments =P You don't deserve them but its great to know that I'm not alone in that regard!
maybe I do? keeps me humble
What an amazing teacher. We’ve been blessed for sure.👍
Another GREAT Scanner Danner video brother.Keep them coming and PRAY for the haters. They are just jealous.
Is there injector pulse? What codes do you have? Any immobilizer codes?
¿Devolvieron la bobina dañada? LOL. es bueno compartir con nuestros hijos ... ¡excelente amigo de video paul! ¡Saludos y muchas bendiciones para ti y tu familia!
Paul, thanks for leaving "oopses" in the video. That makes it real. I just have more "oopses" than you. Great lesson. Thanks again.
For sure! And thank you so much
Iam a young mechanic still training, you have help me big thank you my friend
You found the right place to learn my friend. Thank you
You are tops Sir love working on cars.
Thanks Michael! Keep spending time with those little ones.
I been following you video from timeeeeee ago. Your video always explain things in detail.
Thanks stephen! I'll look some more. It's been awhile
This is a big help for me sir danner scanner your a highly recomended sir.
I find that what normally takes ppl 5 mins takes me quite a bit longer. But I can live with that.
Still can't thank you enough for sharing your knowledge, it has improved my life so much!!!!!
Thank you so much! This is what motivates me more than anything else I do. To help others, to change peoples lives. Everything else is b.s. (money, wealth, fame)
I would not have had the courage before I knew your methods, to post a video or even make a video, its all because of you, never knew I could do this!
you doing videos now too! Awesome man, super cool to hear
It would mean a lot to me if you would check my channel out sometime paul, your work is in my head, thanks again for everything!
Great stuff paul...educational and humour in one vid...good to see you working at home with the family.
Excellent video set, Paul. Many of us work on old cars like this and we try to replace only what is proven bad, for the same reasons in your video. That work flow wouldn't be appropriate in a professional setting, because the chance of a callback or misadventure is higher. We don't have to pay for labor, and we're able to go further if the vehicle has persistent problems, without criticizing the shop in the local coffee house.
exactly! something some car owners need to understand
Terrific real world video. We've all done it and it gets worse with age. Terrific on location video Paul and Caleb ❤️
Thanks Arthur!
another great episode of scanner danner and kaleb!!! seriously though, greatly appreciate all the knowledge you share
😂 Indeed payback
Thank you!
@@ScannerDanner thank you sir.
I'm having this same issue on my 1993 toyota Camry right now i think am gonna just change the coil and see what happens thank you for this video.
This definitely helps me to get a better understanding on the ignition system for my 94 toyota celica gt 2.2l
Awesome
One thing I noticed when you were changing the coil, that may make things easier for you, is after you break loose the nuts on the wires connected to the igniter and the other wire. You could come around and break loose your Phillips head screws, take the screws out, and in your hand you can spin off the nuts to the igniter and the other wire. When putting it back on reverse the process. Seemed like you may would be easier to handle and maybe faster.
I love your honesty! Great REAL WORLD video
Fantastic job on the explanation. As an algebra teacher, this explanation was top notch. This is my channel of choice for learning systems. I wish I could work life on the field with you.
Thanks so much man! I got as far as algebra 1 then quit trying in school (home life stuff directed my course)
I really wish I could turn back the clock and have applied myself in high school. Physics, math, science, chemistry, all stuff I need more knowledge in. Paying for my poor choices for sure.
ScannerDanner I don’t live far from your state. From a soldier like me to you, it would be an honor to meet you and see you work.
I wish I had gone to auto repair school and have an instructor as you.
Loved the video, nice to see I'm not the only one who makes mistakes.
I have the same problems on my 96 corolla i have fuel but no sparks thanks your a life savor
Great vid. I've never worked on older Japanese cars, so that coil setup was new to me. Was a great learning experience (as always!), along with a top-notch refresher for me on troubleshooting. Thanks for another great one! 👍
LOL nice Smitty. We do think a like :-)
this was a very good video because it was fun to watch and as always very educational, not to mention it showers your just a very down to earth guy
This is one of the best priceless vids I've seen this year (12/2020). I needed the laugh. 2 thumbs up!!!
Thank you very much again amazing videos thank you for teaching me without you even though you helping me you don’t even know me and you helping me thank you that’s beautiful I know you are a little bit but you don’t even know me and you keep with me all this knowledge that I need thank you and I think you working together with your son is a beautiful My son is in a different country he’s 16 years old and I wish I was with him thank you you’re very lucky and your son is very lucky I think it’s a beautiful thing you guys working together awesome video I wanna learn as much as I can I want to be a mechanic I’m 53 years old I want to get your classes one of these days when I get some money and I’m gonna buy your book thank you for teaching me I work with at the shop and my boss sometimes three mill like crap but that’s OK he help me out 👀🌿🙏👀🌱
Thank you my friend! Glad you are here with me
DOPE vid man!!! Forget the car, just seeing you n your boy is a beautiful thing! My sons only four but still tries to help me n the shop but nothing like real help from your son!!!
Nice! I'm miss those days. Treasure him and make time for him and when he is older, he will make time for you.
ScannerDanner No truer words can be spoken. Thanks Paul. 🙏
paul I saw that your using and old TV cart from the school. lol I’m a auto shop teacher as well and I scoop those carts up all the time. They work great!!!
Thank you Paul and Caleb.
Guys I was so sure u put back the old coil great video as usual your such a good technician thank you for making the video
Thanks Kimo! This one was fun to do with my boys.
I like the amp clamp primary analysis...so awesome when you get to fix your son's car...makes for quality dad time :)
me too. It was THE test for this application. Thanks!
Excellent, I do not speak English very well, but what good classes do you teach, I've learned a lot from you. Thank you
Thank you Fernando! I can only wish I spoke another language. You are doing a fine job with English.
Danner am Omar from Jamaican. Simple mistake happen to the to the best of us. I love your videos
Wow, thanks a lot, didn't know where to touch. On it first thing tomorrow morning.
For a rookie you did a good job love the outtakes
let me know if you still need the air filter box. theres a bunch down here in texas for that 94
I think I am good. I have a guy shipping me one this week. Thanks OZ!
ScannerDanner no problem
I thank you for the teaching it really helped me out.my respect for you sr .from a nearby country.
entertaining, informative, funny and great teacher
Just did a Toyota 2E headgasket replacement... Car was towed to me so i dont know the full health of the engin..... Car just cranks but dont start at all..... Gona do that coil test now to see if its good.... Just waiting for the battery to be fully charge..... Hopefully this will resolves the issue
