I wonder... does drinking coffee\ caffeine strengthen the prefrontal cortex? It seems that I am a super procrastinator until I get some caffeine, then I'm super motivated....well, maybe not "super" motivated....
BrainCraft Shit. I kinda hoped there was a solution I haven't tried yet. Deadlines don't seem to work. It's reaching the point where I'm becoming desensitised to failure. Meditation apps like headspace kind of work. It takes me out of my head at least. I may have to give it another go.
I wanna know the science behind that too! When you have a backlog of games you wanna play but always put it off to later (procrastinating a procrastination) XD
I think my procrastination comes from a low will to live to begin with. "I'd rather wait and see what kills me first" When it comes to getting my life in order
Yeah, deadlines don't work for me. The closer they get the less I care that they exist and what happens happens. Reframing doesn't work either. I'd rather do nothing for two hours with a little stress than do a task for an hour and do nothing stress free for an hour. Finally, "don't enable them" wouldn't work on me, when I was in a group project with this other guy and he kept pressuring me into doing work I just slowly stopped showing up to class until I didn't show up at all anymore. Bad grades to me eventually just become the past, a fact of life. Stopping me from procrastinating is almost impossible. I'll even procrastinate on things that I don't even hate. My job is so easy and once I start I can go for hours without an issue, just starting is the issue. Oh and I get sick all the time, whether that is my diet or procrastination I do not know.
Evil Paragon 2 well I hope you find something that works for you to stop procrastinating. But I hope this helps: don't do things for arbitrary reasons, such as deadlines, or to get a good grade. Don't let this be your motivation. Instead, get something done because even if it is the stupidest thing ever that you are supposed to do, it might carry some weight in this world, and for me at least, the satisfaction of knowing that in your mind you did something of importance, that you can do something with your life, that you do serve a purpose, even if that purpose is to wash a dish, or clean the floor, or do a stupid school assignment, at least you did something and that should be enough, somebody, somewhere, would kill to have an education or a plate of food, even if it means having to clean that plate of food after you eat off of it. You just have to find the joy in the things you do.
@@melaniefrolich9139 I got tears in my eyes reading this...... I want to go to a therapist but the only way to go to a therapist by getting myself into college......... Because there's a stigma around therapy here........ And that is true most of the time I feel like even if I do a task it's not gonna change the world or something like that...... Thanks a lot for this advice and I hope I will try to follow it.......
@@Neha-bu1dy I hope you are doing well. I hope you're seeing a therapist. I am for a few months now and it does make a difference. Chronic procrastination sucks the life out of you. Much love to you. All the best for your life!

I have a few tricks that I use, and most of the time it works quite well. > First of all, remove any distractions. Go to a library to work, or go to a place without internet (If you need internet, download the material in advance if possible). >I usually make a short mental list of what I need to do right now or what other productive things I can do. If I'm in the mood to procrastinate (which is often) I will reorder my list from "most fun" to "least fun" order and procrastinate the most important thing by doing something less important, but still productive. >If I'm out of energy, I just do 20 push-ups. It's easy to do, you can do it almost anywhere and it takes less than half a minute. After that, I might have more energy to do the tasks that needs to be done.
Procrastinating always made me more motivated. Writing that paper 1 week early was boring, Writing that paper the last night, or few hours was a huge motivator. Since I was never late with assignments I never learned that it could be detrimental. Setting deadlines that have no concrete end date doesn't motivate me. I'd like help/tips for the things you can do "eventually."
I usually just assumed I'd kill the final and normally I did so the system worked. I've always been a man of science and men of science don't do science worksheets; they do fuckin science. I would read texts cover to cover and if there was stuff that sounded cool that i wanted to know about and see happen I went out to the garage, popped a candle in a microwave or something and watched it happen. Feynman said physics is like sex. Sure it has its practical purposes, but that's not why we do it.
My productivity has gone up since I've started doing something that I call "productive procrastination". Instead of fighting procrastination, I treat it like another task that must be done, along eating and sleeping, like it is another "body need". So, whenever I feel distracted and feel like procrastinating, I do. I watch a couple of videos or play a match or two in a game, and then back to work. I feel more relaxed and focused afterwards. It's been working for me, and I hope it works for someone else!
From personal experience, negative reinforcement doesn't work for me even half as well as setting goals and positive reinforcement. Could be different for everyone but if I make myself feel bad about myself I only procrastinate more. I am WAY more motivated by telling myself I can do it and it'll be good when I do.
Man, that vid hit hard. I just got back from failing my chem exam for uni, found myself feeling sick leading up to it and stressing out like mad. Now that I think back, I just kept putting study off again and again. gah, thanks for the kick in the butt to get this fixed.
Whenever I begin to sense the feeling of laziness/procrastination, I always tell myself this, "This is your responsibility and yours alone. If you don't do it now then no one else will." After that, I just do it. Finishing everything until there's nothing left to be done. At least until the next cycle.
Remove distractions. Sounds simple enough but it's more than telling yourself not to be distracted. It's doing things like putting your phone somewhere inconvenient. Moving a book you were going to read back to a shelf instead of leaving it on the table. Unplugging the tv or computer at night so in order to use it the next day you have to get down there and plug it all back in. That's how I get stuff done. I make it inconvenient to do anything other than what I need to get done.
It's all about making a routine. Making changes to one's environment enables people to feel like they can make changes to their routine, giving encouragement to be more proactive.
My anti-procrastination strategy is to straight-up lie to myself. I will convince myself that I'm just going to do one thing and then go slack off, or that I'll half-ass a bigger task. Then momentum and mild perfectionism kick in, and I'll finish everything I need to, or in the case of a big project, however much I can without burning out/triggering my chronic pain. For some reason, I fall for this almost every time.
i am such an extreme procrastinator that my prefrontal cortex is procrastinating about fighting that tug of war with the limbic system, and obviously i am writing this comment hours before my semester exam.
I planned on looking at the comment section to see any ideas ppl would have to deal with procrastinating but all i found were comments about how much of a procrastinator everyone is 😭
I have been Procrastinating for over 7 years now - I havn't done anything productive in all that time - I have never been really interested in any future job prospects - so since I had the oppertunity not to do any real work I took it and have never looked back
This video has seriously been on my Watch Later playlist since it was uploaded. I only just now watched it, in April 2017. At my desk. Procrastinating getting back to work.
honestly idk if I'm a procrastinator, I always do my homework in a set time (sat and sun, 15:00 until I have to go to bed) but NEVER even check it 'till it gets to it.
Actually, cleaning the house is a nice way to procrastinate from other things I am supposed to do. Like finishing some drawings I promised to do until this summer. Also, what is more rewarding in the end? Work is another nice thing to procrastinate in by being not very productive and reading stuff. But since I lost my current job, I wonder what will be next. The reason why I lost it was because of what I was told were my depressions and low productivity. I do not remember it being that bad, but they decided to get rid of me even though the last three months were actually very good and productive, I managed to pull off a successful project which worked and saves the company thousands of Euros each month. Well, time to move on. Interestingly, I think that one of the reasons why I was feeling better in the last months is that I was working on a study since March. Something that was fun to do, something where I see a sense and have a passion about. I wanted to ask for a part-time possibility anyway and now I got fired completely, but with nice benefits. I am not sure if they tell me the full truth but honestly I could not care less. I see this as an opportunity. I wonder where I will end up next. And how long I will procrastinate before I start looking for a job. Probably not very long, as I have a mortgage to pay...
My best strategy to avoid procrastination is to not allow myself to do _anything_ remotely fun after I wake up. If I spend more than 5 minutes doing something I enjoy when I walk in at work, that turns into several hours.
I find that when there is a "boring" task to be done, I tell myself, "If I do it now, then I have later for fun activities." It helps sometimes. By reminding myself that I can get it done now and have the time later for fun things, rather than dreading having to do the mundane chore later keeps me on task. Most of the time..... I say as I am watching UA-cam.
I have ADHD and am a PhD student, all of which makes procrastinating a really bad issue for me. The best strategies I found were from the book Getting Things Done. I found it helped me get on top of things... most of the time.
I use the 5 minute rule. If something can be done in less than 5 min I just go and do it. Also if you start a task and you say to yourself that you are only going to do it for 5 min it´s more likely for you to keep doing this task after the time ends. It´s very useful to use apps that measure your time and sets alarms for breaks.
I'm worried that I'm aware of my procrastination condition and not able to defeated completely, eventually there's a task that causes me stress to finish. I will make it my priority to demolish procrastination =) Great video Vanessa!
This is something I've been desperately needing. I used to be a normal procrastinator and do it all at the last minute, but now I've done it so many times I feel like I've run out of miracles to perform and sometimes don't even get it done at all! Which is terrible!!!! I need to fix this problem before it's too late. If you have any tips other then the ones mentioned in the video, please leave a reply. And if you're going to discriminate against me for being a horrible excuse for a human being, please don't, I don't need to be depressed as well. Or at least be constructive about it and tell me how to improve. EDIT: It could also be connected to my ADHD. It's no where near as bad as it used to be, but one of the symptoms was having trouble focusing and paying attention, which according to this video is connected to the prefrontal cortex.
I've been struggling with this for some time. I'm diagnosed with major depressive disorder and social anxiety disorder. Off medication, I can either have short bouts of energy/motivation and also times where I just sleep. Now that I'm medication, It's made me less manic and even more lethargic. I procrastinate way too much. I've taken caffeine (caffeine pills, coffee, energy drinks, tea) and I was wondering if anyone has any alternatives. Some kind of herb or daily practices? Yes I know this comment is odd and I should just ask a doctor. Pft.
I've been looking into nootropics to help with energy and focus and some look quite promising! I have chronic fatigue and get periods of depression and I'm hoping I can induce motivation with these instead of trying to use will power since I have none
I have much the same problem. I'm resistant to most meds so I'm on ones that basically make me want to do nothing but sleep and watch tv. My doctor gave me a workaround which is basically ADHD meds. They're solving my major issue but there are other problems associated with amphetamines (low appetite, hyper-focusing, sleep problems, etc) and they're addictive which can be a problem for some. As far as natural solutions go, I'm not very good at it, but natural sunshine and even just a small amount of exercise in the morning is probably the most effective.
Taylor Adams Um I have ADHD and it has nothing to do with procrastination it's actually a very serve brain disorder where parts of my brain are under developed and other parts are over developed but concentration and procrastination are not technically symptoms of ADHD or ADD it actually cause me to not be able to have a working memory and what seems like procrastinating is actually making working memory not actually working it's like when you walk into a room and go wait what was I doing again except frequently the condition also makes me unable to be patient so what the medication is actually doing is enabling my working memory and allow me to do the task at hand rather then focus
It does have a lot to do with the pre-frontal cortex. I deal with ADHD on a daily basis and it is said to be based in the prefrontal cortex. I know procrastination is bad and people can give me a hard time about it all they want. I already feel bad about it and it is chronic. Giving me a hard time because of it only fixes the problem for a few days.
For me, procrastination, as well as laziness are evolved survival instinct that force the individual to not waste precious energy doing non important tasks, in nature of course humans did not had dish, but they may have OCD and tried to clean/order their habitats or at least an equivalent and a lot of others tasks which for them were just useless, wasting precious energy, for us energy is not a big deal anymore in rich country, but cleaning is something that can improve our health, that's the ironic part, we might actually degrade our health because of an instinct evolved to helping us survive and keeping our health :D For beating laziness/procrastination, you need to start small, start with a small thing, you don't want to make the dish, fine, just wash a single spoon, you don't want to clean your room, fine, just clean the dust of a single object, at the end, since you already started the task, it will be way easier to continue and finish it.
I procrastinate so much!..(Like I'm doing rn..I should be doing my homework)The entire semester my prefrontal cortex loses before my limbic system..But still like a few days before the exams...My limbic system realizes that I need to study for good grades and I've found that I can study better under pressure!
i procrastinate a lot, but i work better under stress with a small timeframe left for some reason. i work as an illustrator. And sometimes i need to make big assignements. Even though i procrastinate i usually get things done at the last minute because i find working this way increases my drive to make something. And for some reason i make better stuff when i stick to my initial thoughts, cause i have them figured out completely in an instant. Where as if i'd make it in time i'd try lots of different stuff with way lower quality. And then i can't figure out what to do cause i have way too many options.
You see the problems is that, I am no longer impacted by the consequences, as I put the things needed for survival in check, whilst procrastinating on the other things such as studies etc. For example, yesterday, the whole fucking day, I slept, and for 24 hours, I did not get out of my bedroom. I still have a thesis to write. Someone please help.
I find that when I get home from work, if I immediately start my chores I will get them done faster and they will seem easier. If I get home and take a moment to relax, it is more difficult to start working on my chores and I often will put them off until the next day.
my room has been messy for months. i have severely irregular sleep for a year now. this all got worse when i first got a phone. shorts are so addicting, instant gratification is so addicting, i just cant stop this is worse than drugs
My strategy on handling this is to divide everything up in small, or even tiny tasks. And then promise myself a treat for doing it. Like doing something I like to do. Often such a small task is done in a few minutes and I feel invigorated and then end up doing more than what I had planned to do. But if not I just go back to being lazy. Obviously this only works if you don't have a lot of "nasty" things to do.
Go try Modafinil, it should fix your procrastination, for me it was caused by ADHD, and ADHD will cause problems in the prefrontal cortex. And may be you could do a video about Modafinil (smart drug) or ADHD?
I found prioritizing your tasks a huge help, meaning that if you write to do-lists, never write: - do laundry - netflix 1 - answer mail to teacher - do math homework Instead, write something like this: - A) answer mail to teacher - A) do math homework - B) do laundry - C) netflix ...or whatever order you prefer. A = prio1, B = prio2 etc. The concept is to make sure you're aware of how much value you see in each and every task. If you don't have that visual picture you are very likely to pick the chill tasks first and the hard ones later or... even later... At least that's how it works for me :)
When I started watching this I was wondering what is the difference between chronic procrastinators (20%) and those of us with ADHD (5% of that 20%). By the end I think I'm able to answer, us ADHDers aren't even motivated by the consequences and therefore may need psychological and medical interventions. 😁
After reading this I might have to re-evaluate myself. I don't think I have ADHD because- nvm I just researched a bit and fit almost all the criteria now I am devastated.
I don't procrastinate things because I don't like them... I don't even know if it's procrastinating anymore. I just straight up don't do things. As far as getting things done that I do end up doing, I start small and get on a roll. Usually it starts by getting everything I could possibly need out, for instance my calculator, pencils, and paper for homework, and then I might as well start since I'm all set up to go. And then once I finish one thing completely I use the high of accomplishment to get the stuff out for something else and keep the momentum going. kanbanflow.com is a great resource, the pomodoro clock especially because the breaks every 25 minutes keep me from getting burnt out and I feel more productive since I know how long I'll be working. (Ironically I don't really procrastinate school work and similar anymore, just personal goals and dreams...)
I used to be a great procrastinator, and then, when I was 31, I had a stroke. 10 years later I rarely procrastinate. Mostly because if I don't do it now, I'll forget and it never gets done. Email is a great way to remind yourself about work, because as soon as I get home from work I never think about the stuff I said I'd do. And vice versa.
I write reminders for things I have to do on my arm, then write "check arm" on my hand so that, not only can I not forget (because if I put a reminder on paper or my phone, I might forget I wrote the reminder), but I can't give myself an excuse for not doing it because the reminder is right there on my arm (so it can't be like "I know I wrote a reminder, but I don't remember for what...I'll check it later" ~never checks it so that I don't have to do the thing~). I still procrastinate plenty, but less than if I didn't do this.
From my experience with my mother, there is also a polar opposite to procrastination and it has to do with an obsessive desire to control the uncontrollable and predict the unpredictable. It manifests as things like deliberately deliberately misreading clocks, instructing others to do things they were just about to do and showing up at the airport four hours early for a flight that ends up being delayed anyways. As a result of the "unattractive traits skip a generation" phenomenon, I am a SINISTER procrastinator. Why do today what Mom is already doing for me?
A trick that i learned for making boring chores, is to do something else that you like at the same time. For example, listen an podcast that you love while you clean your dishes. The trick is to restrict yourself of doing the thing you like only while you are doing the think you do not. Therefore you start cheating your brain to want to do those stupid dishes, just because you will finally get to find out the end of that awesome audio book that you ware listening to. Oddly enough doing this made me more motivated to do other things as well, since i actually accomplished 2 tasks on the price of 1. Feeling that you have done something this day will push you do something else as well. And of course not all boring tasks allow you do do something else at the same time, but you can say to your self, "OK, i will only play this mega awesome game, after I do my taxes" I do not know whether it works for other people, but it definitely worked for me.
Don't we all know procrastinating is bad? I indulge in my denial despite the sword hanging above my head. Need halp. Nothing helps and I take things a bit too far with procrastination eg. Studying for a semester exam only an hour or 2 before. And I mean a full book chock full of stuff to learn. Just can't get myself to work. I'm in serious trouble
Procrastination comes about because thoughts arise, and then we listen to them. The best way to give your life a complete shift is to recognize that thoughts rarely help in these situations. You know you have to do something, and when these thoughts of laziness manifest, then we must recognize that it is just a thought, and nothing more. By recognizing it, it loses the power to take control over us, and then it gets easier. There's a book called "The Happiness Trap", I know it sounds kind of corny, but it has the potential of giving you absolute control of your life.
Nice explanation of procrastination which can also be explained from *impression management* or *self-regulation failure* perspectives. Some people intentionally procrastinate when a task that could be failed is approaching. So when the individual fails on that task, others will know that he/she procrastinated so that he/she failed but not because he/she is incompetent. Some people, on the other hand, can't regulate their emotions to start a task that they should be doing due to unregulated emotions. Eyyorlamam bu kadar :)
I have been a chronic procrastinator most of my life but I found some tricks to manipulate my emotions to just get tasks done. First I promote a reward for completing chores. Example, like if I clean the floor and take out the trash, then I can watch a certain amount of UA-cam or allow some video game playing. Second I jump on a task as soon as it comes up, even if I don't see it to completion. I noticed that starting a task puts my brain "In Progress" to the task or multiple tasks which tricks me into "just finishing it".
I utilize my calendar a lot. I schedule every hour of my work day so I know what to work on and when. I do the same at home. I make sure that I schedule various tasks. When the alarm goes off, I allow myself to snooze it if I want to procrastinate and only turn it off when I am finished with the task. I find this works wonders. I do this a day or two in advance. Also, scheduling in some BS time is also handy, so your Limbic system can get some reward in there while you do what you want for an hour.
This may sound dumb but when I procrastinate I do so by doing something else I need to do, just it's something else a bit more enjoyable. Like, I can clean my closet or I can clean my overstuffed email account and downloads folder, while watching some netflix on the side. Or, if it is something really boring I try to finish it as fast a possible to get to something more interesting. And, if it's something I really need to do, but really don't want to do right now, I find putting unnecessarily dramatic music on makes it more fun (and sometimes a little awkward) to do. Doing this makes cleaning actually fun. I also don't let myself binge watch more than three or four episodes of something a day. Though, that's mainly because I'd rather enjoy a show over a longer period than see it all at once and have nothing to do for a week--sorta maximizing how long I get to enjoy it. And I only watch stuff at night so I can be more productive during the day. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to make studying fun just yet, so I still procrastinate that a lot. Someone let me know if you've figured this out.
To stop procrastinating, you must reply to your you tube comments. It's extremely helpful and it deters mind's tendency for distracting you, or splitting your attention span. It's always best to reply to my comments first, according to the excessive research done by the AMA.
Aaah this is so true I procrastinated on learning my school work, and failed a math test. I was so sad, that instead of becoming better, I got really depressed and stayed home. I'm meeting a counselor to help me next week.
The best way to avoid procrastinating that I've found is to get off UA-cam (and any other addictive time-wasters like video games, NetFlix, etc.). When you have fewer readily-available options for procrastinating, the "activation energy" required to get you doing something meaningful decreases. Obviously I have relapsed and come back to UA-cam, but it worked really well for 3 months!
I like to put zones in place for my brain, so if I'm in certain places I'm more likely to do certain things. In college, I always studied in the same spot, and I never did anything else there, so that if I needed to study I just went to that spot. If people wanted to chat, I'd get up and go get coffee, and only come back to the spot when I was resuming study. It's a little harder to do at home, in a small apartment, but still. Zoning. It's worth a try.
Make a checklist of all the things you plan to do and all the steps required for accomplishing your goal. Every time you cross something off you feel like you've accomplished something.
Right now I am listening to Shia LaBeoufs "just do it" thing while listening to music and doing homework. It is working well for warding off procrastination.
My strategy to procrastinating less on cleaning up is just go on like you used to throughout the week and at the end of the week say to yourself “this is beginning to become a mess” even when it’s not. After 2 days. Just clean up even if it isn’t really that dirty. If it’s easy, you’ll do it again cuz it’s such a small task. If it’s a lot, you probably won’t make it that much of a mess next time (if you still do, you have to suffer the consequences) For me this works, but it’s not a rock solid plan cuz some things need more than a clean once a week.
what im working on right now is turning it into a game....so say you have something to do, a paper perhaps.....set a goal like im gonna finish a page or two then make a reward system for each milestones....that way you have something to look forward to.....also, you get to trick your mind into doing something...the reward system can be anything like, watching an episode or 2....
For cleaning especially I have times when I do it easier than at others. For example, I only do the dishes in the morning, if I don't do them then they sit for another day.
Ok, Vanessa. It occurs to me from time to time, but I've already found a way of avoiding tasks. All you have to do is to convince yourself that what you do is reeeealy important, you do it by reasoning. It can take an hour or so, but it works..) Seriously, gradually you become tired of your own conscience and just do the job. The next step is to make yourself like it. Just smile when you performing everyday things, think about the usefulness of the process, then, it becomes a part of you and now you try to avoid being destructed by something more fun to do.
I made myself like doing dishes. Never liked it in childhood. Now I can't imagine a dirty plate lying in the rack because of my laziness. Guys, don't ask me do your dishes, just listen to the solution..)
Procrastinating feels good but I always try to do tasks earlier so that I can have a chance to improve my performance. In order to avoid procrastination, It is a good strategy to create more time for yourself before deadlines.
"procrastinating is bad, I will never do it again", me after every time I've pushed up doing the dishes so long that I can't cook anymore. Which is after every time I do cooking. "procrastinating is bad, I will never do it again", me after everytime I've pushed up reading the book for my next literary seminar to 6 pm the evening before the seminar is due. Which is every seminar.
I don't even get pushed by the consequences anymore ._.
If there's candy in the house, I already ate it.

I even procrastinate while I am procrastinating! Yeah, I know, I am awesome like that!
How does that even work?
Yo dawg we heard you like procrastination
I wanna know the science behind that too! When you have a backlog of games you wanna play but always put it off to later (procrastinating a procrastination) XD
That's nothing I procrastinate when it comes to procrastination. I put off putting things off.
Nathan Hawkes isn't that just not procrastinating?
I think my procrastination comes from a low will to live to begin with. "I'd rather wait and see what kills me first" When it comes to getting my life in order
My will to live isn't low like you but is actually confused.
I wish I'm joking, being dead inside or depressed or whatever really fucks you up.
How are things now, stranger?

My terrible grades never motivated me to do better at school.
CW AtWork I relate strong with this. Be my friend.
I left school 5 months ago partly because of that.
Why would they? School is not a place for smart people. The whole ponit of homework is to get less of it.
Mine too
The problem is that I NEVER LEARN! I just keep procrastinating no matter what.
I wasn't procrastinating, I was exercising my limbic system
i can relate to anything related to you!
Chaz Evansdale I procrastinate so much I end up doing nothing.
Doesn't work for me :p
I usually just assumed I'd kill the final and normally I did so the system worked. I've always been a man of science and men of science don't do science worksheets; they do fuckin science. I would read texts cover to cover and if there was stuff that sounded cool that i wanted to know about and see happen I went out to the garage, popped a candle in a microwave or something and watched it happen. Feynman said physics is like sex. Sure it has its practical purposes, but that's not why we do it.
i have tried many times to find a way to stop procrastinating i think it's just impossible
The irony for me is that i procrastinate by watching a video about procrastination.
Thank you. I'll try that.
Dead lines make me procrastinate even more, I'm mostly anxious
i am such an extreme procrastinator that my prefrontal cortex is procrastinating about fighting that tug of war with the limbic system, and obviously i am writing this comment hours before my semester exam.
if i need to do my homework i just think about doing it so much that i think i have done it while i didnt
Every time you realise you are procrastinating, slap yourself hard.
Jommy Davi Or do 10 pushups
i'll end up doing pushups all day and get mad gains lol
Jommy Davi Exactly, you might as well do something good for yourself
erh, i'll slap myself later
Doesn't work.
At my desk. Procrastinating getting back to work.
i'm procastinating right now

honestly idk if I'm a procrastinator, I always do my homework in a set time (sat and sun, 15:00 until I have to go to bed) but NEVER even check it 'till it gets to it.
I do the dishes to procrastinate from real work.
I wonder of psychopaths have a smaller tendency to procrastinate because of how they're brains do (not) handle feelings. 😮
I have 2 stacks of dirty dishes in the kitchen to do and yet here I am watching YT videos. again
i buy paper and plastic plates the only thing i have whats not plastic is wine and whisky and shot glasses
brodie clamp Eish I am not that extreme. The idea of all that plastic waste stops me!
mrbandishbhoir I will try this tonight when I cook :)
Am I a chronic procrastinator let's see it's 2.30 am I have an exam tomorrow and I haven't even began studying, so I think it's safe to say YES.
For me, procrastination, as well as laziness are evolved survival instinct that force the individual to not waste precious energy doing non important tasks, in nature of course humans did not had dish, but they may have OCD and tried to clean/order their habitats or at least an equivalent and a lot of others tasks which for them were just useless, wasting precious energy, for us energy is not a big deal anymore in rich country, but cleaning is something that can improve our health, that's the ironic part, we might actually degrade our health because of an instinct evolved to helping us survive and keeping our health :D
For beating laziness/procrastination, you need to start small, start with a small thing, you don't want to make the dish, fine, just wash a single spoon, you don't want to clean your room, fine, just clean the dust of a single object, at the end, since you already started the task, it will be way easier to continue and finish it.
I'll have to try this. Once I start something I usually finish. Its the initial starting of something that I put off.
I'm such a procrastinator that I added the video to 'Watch it later' list, immediately
Someone please help.
did you break your habit of procrastinating ?
I find that when I get home from work, if I immediately start my chores I will get them done faster and they will seem easier. If I get home and take a moment to relax, it is more difficult to start working on my chores and I often will put them off until the next day.
If you're reading the comments we all know what the answer is.
"...Let them experience the consequences of their actions..."
Hahaha. That never stopped me from procrastinating!

my room has been messy for months. i have severely irregular sleep for a year now. this all got worse when i first got a phone. shorts are so addicting, instant gratification is so addicting, i just cant stop this is worse than drugs
Did anybody notice that in the thumbnail image of this video the word "procrasination" is missing the letter "t"?
Clearly I DIDN'T! Thanks for pointing it out.
Go try Modafinil, it should fix your procrastination, for me it was caused by ADHD, and ADHD will cause problems in the prefrontal cortex. And may be you could do a video about Modafinil (smart drug) or ADHD?
Never mind procrastinating - I don't do the work at all!

I found prioritizing your tasks a huge help, meaning that if you write to do-lists, never write:
- do laundry
- netflix 1
- answer mail to teacher
- do math homework
Instead, write something like this:
- A) answer mail to teacher
- A) do math homework
- B) do laundry
- C) netflix
...or whatever order you prefer. A = prio1, B = prio2 etc. The concept is to make sure you're aware of how much value you see in each and every task. If you don't have that visual picture you are very likely to pick the chill tasks first and the hard ones later or... even later... At least that's how it works for me :)
I love that watching this video literally is me procrastinating...
Hilariously, I added this to my "watch later" Playlist when this was released and just noticed it. I'll watch it later, I swear.
I generally wait to listen to my favorite podcasts until I have to wash dishes/clean. Keeps my limbic happy while I do the hard/boring stuff.
Music helps
I agree with this. Great tip!.
Msuic at least makes boring tasks more tolerable and the music and be fast or upbeat to lighten the mood.
I set timers on my phone... a lot so I'm getting an alarm. and knowing a task will only take 5 minutes helps with motivation
I've immediately put this in my watch later list
And of course not all boring tasks allow you do do something else at the same time, but you can say to your self, "OK, i will only play this mega awesome game, after I do my taxes"
I do not know whether it works for other people, but it definitely worked for me.
Some people will try all this and still procrastinate. It's a complex issue that doesn't get resolved simple simple tricks.
I procrastinated 3 days to watch this.... I need help.

I've been procrastinating since this came out, I'm just watching this now
Don't we all know procrastinating is bad? I indulge in my denial despite the sword hanging above my head. Need halp. Nothing helps and I take things a bit too far with procrastination eg. Studying for a semester exam only an hour or 2 before. And I mean a full book chock full of stuff to learn. Just can't get myself to work. I'm in serious trouble
How is it going with your procrastination after these two years?
My procrastination seems to be too far developed. I've failed several classes, and scored lower than I should..yet, I still procrastinate.
I wanna help but I'm in the same boat
I got a 12 minute DMW ad at the beginning of this video...
and I ended up watching all of it because it was so interesting.
I've never thought about the difference between people who procrastinate and chronic procrastinators before. Thanks for the great video!
To stop procrastinating, you must reply to your you tube comments. It's extremely helpful and it deters mind's tendency for distracting you, or splitting your attention span. It's always best to reply to my comments first, according to the excessive research done by the AMA.
i procrastinate getting out of bed

I laid in bed from 8am til 5 pm today...I have a thesis draft due Sunday night
I find that planning what you want to do the night before helps me to get out of bed quicker
What if procrastination is caused by not finding meaning on what we do?
I write a journal and make lists, because it satisfy me very much when I can strike out a task I have completed. This helps me a lot. :)
Aaah this is so true
I procrastinated on learning my school work, and failed a math test.
Every time you cross something off you feel like you've accomplished something.
so my limbic system is pretty weak. Sometimes it wins though

Right now I am listening to Shia LaBeoufs "just do it" thing while listening to music and doing homework.
It is working well for warding off procrastination.
Wou!! Tina Fay your English accent is spot on and I hope you make this youtube thing as successful as your acting career.
Deadlines work really well.
My missus says "Do this by lunch time or you're dead!"
Works a treat.
If it’s a lot, you probably won’t make it that much of a mess next time (if you still do, you have to suffer the consequences)
For me this works, but it’s not a rock solid plan cuz some things need more than a clean once a week.
what im working on right now is turning it into a game....so say you have something to do, a paper perhaps.....set a goal like im gonna finish a page or two then make a reward system for each milestones....that way you have something to look forward to.....also, you get to trick your mind into doing something...the reward system can be anything like, watching an episode or 2....
I'm supposed to be doing my English homework but let me watch this first.
