A wee update: More people are reading this now and we're beginning to see an increased number of ownvoices reviews that are coming with some (imo valid) criticisms that I don't talk about in this review because...well I didn't notice them. That's why I stress the importance of not just listening to me! While I stand by most of what I talked about in terms of the book I'm also seconding my urge to go out there and read some other reviews and come to your own conclusions. (while not attacking someone who might say something negative about your fave...let's be nice).
read the Temeraire series, there is some gays reference there. Generally, the book doesn't show hardly any other people involved in romance. I simply doesn't mention it all that much other than the main two characters. I read it on day 1, as I am a huge Naomi Novik fan. I will probably read it a good half dozen more times until the next book is released. I think El is the dark queen of sarcasm. Loved this book.
To be fair, we never learn anyone's sexuality at all, whatever it might be. We only ever learn that El and Orion fancy each other, but none of the other characters have love interest so far.
the gays are in the next book! she also kinda implies she could be slightly bi, unless I read it wrong. There is very little romance or sexuality outside the main 2 Characters in this series though and its frowned upon as a dangers distraction by their student culture.
I relate to the whole “WHERE ARE THE GAYS???!!!” Cuz I can relate better to the book that way But in my opinion If the author did not intend to establish any LGBTQ characters at the start of the book then he/she shouldn’t have to just for the sake of representation. Cuz theres alot of books who like throwing the whole we have representation flag and then when you read it... I dunno it just feels so forced in :,( And who knows its a trilogy :0 Then again thats just my opinion, like LGBTQ characters in Rick riordan’s books were added in so naturally because it wasnt a matter if they were LGBTQ or not it was just because that’s who they really were. Im sorry if I aint making so much sense, I enjoyed this video. Really love hearing more insights from fellow Naomi Novik readers.
oh yeah, I think I've conveyed that better in other videos - I have a whole song about this on the channel which conveys 'don't throw us in as tokens but hey statistically if you're writing a school with 1000s of characters someone must be LGBT+'
Really loved this review, you gave some really good insight into the novel, and I appreciate the amount of info you packed in without spoilers. I'm subscribed to Illumicrate who have announced they're doing Deadly Education in their September box, and I'm currently writing a dark academia YA so it's definitely something I'm keen on. But having read a few Novik books, I was feeling kinda meh about it. So thanks for hyping me up for it again. Will definitely check out more of your reviews.
To the "where are the gays" comment. We are seeing this school from the point of an outcast who takes no interest in communicating with anyone. Half the school could be gay and El would not know or care about it as she essentially only talks to like 3 people. We would not know because we are reading from El's point of view and as previously mentioned El either doesn't know or care.
there are lgbtq in the second book as the reviewers probably knows now- and while random representative extras could have been introduced in the 1st book, I thought the few characters who we do discover are gay - while none of it was just casual, its just part of the world etc acceptance like the broken earth series, I thought the characters experiences added to the world building Also as a South Asian I didn't find anything offensive - and this is actually one of my new favourite books, but I will say the main character read like a girl with no connection to her Indian heritage which makes sense with the story but she also read as white passing. I really believe she should have more too feel bitter about regardinging her Indian heritage and lack of connection to that side of the family. And not just time thinking about great-grandma's works/her name not matching her looks/Indian classmates who know her family drama

I have read the first two - need to get to the rest. I'll be interested to see if there are other romances in later books :)
You had me at ‘tentacles around ever corner’
One of the best ways of reviewing books if not the best ❤

very true - fingers crossed for future books

Never read novik but I'm interested in her dragon napoleonic (?) series. Since 2012
Temeraire! It's good fun (I've only read the first two but they were good)
EVERY NAOMI NOVIK BOOK NEEDS GAYS SHE SETS UP SAPPHIC ROMANCES SO WELL AND BAM THEY'RE STRAIGHT COME ON NAOMI
Do you think she knows?
There is at least one gay character in the Temeraire series, if I remember correctly. But I agree with you.
