    The trouble with tribbles is one of my favorite episodes in the original star trek. A great Scottie performance, with no tribble at all.

    I think a shipyard is reasonable - probably more for repair and overhaul than building ships from scratch.

      If we assume it is a civilian station, it would build civilian ships, which would be a lot simpler than Starfleet ships.

      I was going to say that maybe it's used to build Archer Class and smaller sized vessels for local use.

      Most drydocks we see on the show are basically free-floating in space, with a proper spacestation nearby, but not physically attached. I'd assume that is the case with K7 too.

" Well, at least it will make it easier to find that Tribble bomb, er, watch your head Captain, this bin has a low ceiling." What if from the Tribble episode of Deep space nine.

    I could see the shipyard theory. I mean, we already know that Starfleet and the Galifreyans share technology. The shipyard is inside of it! Lol. But realistically, considering the Defiant was able to be built at Terrok Nor in the mirror universe, and voyager can just pump out new shuttles and small ships like no one's business, it's not hard to believe. Also it's possible the shipyard is detached, you mentioned it was moved to orbit the planet, the shipyard may be in orbit as well and not directly attached, just managed at K7.

    • @nobodyimportant2470
      @nobodyimportant2470 6 років тому +2

      More likely a shipyard was build in orbit near K7 and they ran the yard. In the Armada games stations did have small shipyards built into them but that was limited to smaller shuttle type ships like construction ships and cargo/mining ships.

    I think that it makes more sense for the station to have a shipyard than not, after all, it is visited by starships regularly and repairs need to be done and sometimes you need to manufacture entirely new parts if repairs go beyond stitching up a hole in the exterior.

  • @That80sGuy1972
    @That80sGuy1972 6 років тому +7

    I love K7 as a flying piece of junk that is always being upgraded in parts... like an old house that is owned by a family for generations, down to custom fitting various parts because the new versions don't come in that size naturally. There is a really annoying mission in STO where you tweak the electrical system flow to make things work because it is an old electrical system using modern gear. Cheap Ferrenghi, not dealing with the electrical system first.

  • @ShujinTribble

    Nice to have Tribbles mentioned. As to a 'shipyard', if K7 had fabrication facilities, it's possible that pre-fabricated ships with minimal warp propulsion could arrive & internal parts be fabricated and installed. Building a whole ship would seem wildly beyond its resources. Thanks for the vid!

    I could see them using K7 for smaller ship production and experimentation, also decomissioning of older ships as well.

    I can imagine different sizes of shipyards, they can be immediately adjacent to the station.
    If anything internal, at most, shuttles and the like.
    During the TOS run, surprised they even had the money to make it.

  • @hogfry

    Here's the thing I've always thought about a federation shipyard. All you really need is an industrial replicator, a few transport craft with tractor beams, and a supply of raw materials.
    All the stuff we see like gantry cranes and those rib cage frames are probably just to make the work more convenient.
    But you should in theory be able to assemble a vessel in space without anything else.
    K7 is certainly large enough to house industrial replicators. Has power enough for multiple tractor beams and likely has a fleet of shuttles and worker bees.

    There is one reasoning to civilians operTing the station and thats any militarization of the border might be seen as a challenge by the Klingon.
    Also while I agree the Klingons have attacked before unprevoked im sure prevoking them is something the federation doesnt want to do.

  • @joshstreet6819
    @joshstreet6819 6 років тому +10

    Sure Deep Space Station K7 having a shipyard is like saying the Oberth class is the best ship class that the federation has ever built.
    I can see K7 having maybe a small shipyard for making shuttle crafts or other small ship that are the same size but nothing bigger.

    • @DrewLSsix
      @DrewLSsix 6 років тому +1

      Josh Street. Why not? We see a much smaller station in TMP tending at least one substantial drydock. Theres no reason there cant be several dry docks out of view and other pieces of equipment not seen in frame.

    • @joshstreet6819
      @joshstreet6819 6 років тому

      Drew the station is TMP controls a group of dry docks(shipyards).With K7 we don't see any dry docks in the space around it and that's why I say it might build shuttle craft, runabouts, or other small ships that are around the same size.

    • @DrewLSsix
      @DrewLSsix 6 років тому +2

      Josh Street. You dont exactly see much of the surrounding space of K7, and the nearest dry dock to that earth station is a couple of specs in the distance at cinema resolution.
      Its entirely possible that K7 has a large infrastructure spread out over thousands of cubic kilometers, it is space after all.
      Thats been my assumption with TOS for years now, theres a lot more to it that we just dont see.

  • @krzosu

    Shipyard is a ship construction facility - it doesnt have to be a large autonomous instalation - although that would be most convienient if you wanted to construct VERY large ships. Im totally okay with it having a shipyard capable of making smaller things - like worker bees, shuttles, runabouts - or even smaller tender frigates, ore ships or construction/mining ships. Imho in this case your main problem is that you associate a ship yard with just the installattions we saw in shows - and those were the large variants meant to build way bigger ships. Having such ship yard in a deep space would make sense - you can build localy ships that are needed without having them to be shipped in from elsewhere. This is makes sense from efficiency point of view. After all you need are small utility ships mostly - and not galaxy/Constitution class ones for hauling grain,ores - for that kind of thing smaller ships will do just fine especially since the station had already industrial sections which were capable of making the parts needed to build stuff anyway it does makes sense - not only you can process resouress localy, you can build various equipment that might be needed on the "frontier" and on top of that you can build small ships to get that stuff and its all neatly packaged at the station.Cheers

    The dorsal module clearly contains a large shuttle bay and likely facilities for maintenance and repair of small warp vessels. Given the station's stated industrial fabrication capabilities, I can see it even having an articulated dry dock framework for vessel construction that when not in use is fully retracted forming the curved hull surface at the very bottom of the module.

    The ship yards we have seen in Trek so far have almost always been free floating "skeletons" rigs where the ship is assembled so if K7 was a shipyard the skeletons would float near by and K7 would function as basically a parts factory creating the parts which would be then assembled into ships at those skeleton rigs, also personally I wouldn't be so worried to add STO cannon into the lore since well they have shown themselves as far better caretakers of the Star Trek IP than STD has

    Considering that lower section was a docking bay, the use of industrial replicators, that the station used to be the area for PVP missions in STO and because we have seen ships build attached to other stations such as Terok Nor/DS9...I find it acceptable that in STO canon, ships could be built there on a case-by-case basis, NOT as a normal spacedock assembly line.

    I could see a shipyard tooled to build runabouts and shuttles. That way if a ship looses one, like they do, they can pick up a shuttle in their patrol area and not go all the way yo a core world. It would also prevent the need for carriers meant for resupplying shuttles to outposts.

    K7 had industrial fabrication plants and a hanger section that could hold runabout sized craft. It would make sense to make smaller ships like this further out from Earth, as they would spend less time traveling to where they were needed. Manufacturing smaller, science type ships would also make sense if the industrial replicators were present and not being used. Not sure about combat vessels or large capital ships though. I guess it all depends on how much the station was refitted. It might have been retrofitted during the Dominion war to help replace ships lost in battle.

    A ship yard is possible if it's just a basic gantry that they assemble. They could project a gravity field or let it be zero g and do maintenance or construction or maybe just overhauls on existing frames. It isn't implausible - but we've never seen it. I would like to however.

    I think the shipyard would be more for shuttles and other "small" non-military crafts. Also, used for repairs and refits. As a shipyard isn't about making large Capitol Ships. They can make other kinds and be used as a drydock for repairs. I can see K-7 needing one being used as a station around a planet and cannot fix everything planetside.

    Technically, in Star Trek Online you're actually buying ships - either with Refined Dilithium (Which you can process at the rate of 8,000/day, so Tier 4 ships that cost about 68,000RD's will take you a while to get the resources for.) or ZEN (Which you can buy with real-world currency, or buy from those who do so with RD's through the exchange - at whatever rate they set, which is usually AT LEAST 200RD/1Z.) - NOT "building" them. Also, the shipyard on STO's K7 is able to fix your ship if you've incurred an "injury" or 3 by dying - repeatedly.
    Also, Deep Space K7 - or rather, the Sherman System itself - is a place you can instantaneously Transwarp to - from anywhere in the galaxy, mind you - once you're at at least Level 1 in your Diplomacy Duty Officer Commendation, & since the Sherman system is close to Drozana station - a K7 variant that's seen better days & is now owned by the Ferengi - & the Nukara system - a Hell world where you find the Tholians making mischief - it's not as useless as it would otherwise be.
    Fun fact: as of 2409 in STO, the KDF has actually enslaved both the entire Gorn Hegemony AND the Orion Syndicate (Which you'd think would concern the people at Starfleet, since the Orion Syndicate is located near the Risa system & thus rather close to Sol itself - at least in comparison to the KDF's main territory.) as well as ally with the Nausicaans, the Ferasans - a race of cat-based humanoids, & the Romulan counterpart to the Federation's new Caitian allies, the Letheans, & even (If you've paid to unlock them.) some Joined Trill. Unfortunately, if you don't pay the ZEN to unlock the Ferasans & Joined Trill, then you can only pick from the Klingons or Orions if you want a FEMALE Captain - & even then, the only female Bridge Officers you can get in game that are female are Klingon or Orion unless you want to pay 500ZEN($5USD) each for a female Ferasan Bridge Officer. So, the Klingons have apparently decided to give up on Discovery's "Klingons Only" mentality. (BEFORE that even became a thing!) And, when you meet the Lukari - after the Iconian War arc - the person back at HQ you talk to after the first mission in THAT arc calls them a potential "client species." So, apparently they've taken on an American Mob mentality instead.

    Ship yards don't always build the ships. I have spend a good chunk of my Naval Career in shipyards and we were there for upgrades and repairs. So yes K7 could have that ability, and still be called a ship yard.

    Hell yeah, a "Shipyard." K-7 has storage, cargo handling and "fabrication facilities." Plenty of room like a Howard Johnson's for staff and guests. Obviously NOT for building the next class of anything; repair, retro-fit, top off the tanks..... Absolutely. An OASIS in the great dessert of space!

    Naming conventions aren't supposed to be fancy. They are supposed to stand out and easy to remember. You want anyone from the federation to be able to come and if they are told to go to KA they know exactly where KA is with little to no time spent memorizing names.

    I don't mind the idea that there's a shipyard in STO. It's loose canon at best anyway. But there is what appears to my poor eyes a docking bay at the "bottom" (I think that's what it is). I don't have a great sense of scale, but maybe that bay could fit something like a Miranda, Centaur, Steamrunner, Defiant, Sabre, Norway, Oberth, or perhaps civilian transports. Maybe something bigger when you consider seeing a Jem'Haddar attack ship moored in the bay at what appears to be a much smaller Starbase 375. I'd think, if my assumptions are correct, it'd likely be more for repair and reloading rather than full on ship construction. Being that it's a supply outpost, it would also make sense that transport ships would want to dock with it for more options for transferring cargo (a la Babylon 5. Yes, I know B5 doesn't have matter-energy transporters).

      I Have been a fan and collector of Star Trek stuff since TOS. I still have the original enterprise deck plan set. I Lost the TOS Tech Manual Long ago. And down thought the years Much of the things I have has gone from alpha cannon to beta to wtf are you talking about. but going over my beta stuff , including the FASA ship recognition manual , and Jackill's Star fleet reference Manual , ships of the fleet vol 1 and 2 ( which seems to be not simply beta but lost martial to boot.) which covers the time frame post TOS to the first cpl of movies. it includes all the classes of ships from mobile dry docks to tugs. If K-7 ( a trading out post ) has a ship yard it would have to be the assignment of a mobile dry dock.

    • @mikemalo47

  • @danielkirpes8315
    @danielkirpes8315 6 років тому

    And then there is "How was it built?" Only a minor leap that K-7 may have been constructed from previously de-commissioned Starships. A few saucers, some booms, a little re-skinning with added decks..... Imagine the efficiency of 'flying' said de-commissioned Starships to the general area for her initial construction. Warp Reactors that can concentrate on fabrication instead of propulsion. Oodles of Tech @ the ready....
    Golly, if only I could live in that universe instead of this one.

    Hey gramps, my guess is that they Klingon's and the Federation probably just stopped fighting, as we do see them go to war in DS9. I mean for an ageless people the Organians dropped the ball during the Dominion War period. As for a ship yard, maybe...if it built Runabouts, fighters and shuttles (and maybe the Defiant class ships). But nothing larger. But then again, ship yards aren't just used for construction but heavy repairs as well, and that seems feasible, but not large ship construction, that is unrealistic.

    One of the reasons I hate beta "canon" is you get crap that appears to be what some fanboy made up for a video game is somehow included as "fact". We are to believe that a 100+ year old starbase would still be useful at all, let alone powerful enough to be stationed on the Klingon/Federation Neutral Zone in the 25th century and that out of all the officers in all the Federation that a familiar name like Naomi Wildman would become commander of said station. Let alone that it somehow has a shipyard?
    This isn't on you, Lore Reloaded. This is a commentary on what I like to call the "Wouldn't it be swell..." moments that seem to make up a lot of beta lore and a lot of modern comic book storytelling.
