Yes, I would believe that to be true based upon their quality, utility, and availability. I own a half dozen of them and always carry one. You can't beat them for an EDC knife.
Brother UKG 👊 A very good video, and one I second 💪 I will do some urban & outdoor kits this year. Personally, being a practical man, I prefer a hybrid approach, much like yourself, with a balance between form & function 😉 Thanks for sharing, ATB Gus 👍
Great video. The ones that puzzle me in the EDC community are; (1) Peoples obsession with carrying gear to start fires. When are people in this situation where they randomly need to start an urgent fire without proper gear?! (2) Peoples obsession with pliers. Exception for the trades perhaps (and they won't be using dinky keychain size pliers), but for most folk it's an utterly redundant tool outside of your home/garage, and inside of your home/garage you'll surely have a proper pair of pliers not far away! (3) EDC coins. Just why?
I think the usefulness of pliers would be highly dependent on what your every day looks like. For my every day, I use the pliers in my leatherman wave more than even the knife blade. But I'm also doing a lot of hands on work, fixing things, building things, etc... where pliers make life so much easier. (I don't work in the trades, but am pretty handy frequently do things that those in the trades would do.) I even used my pliers once at my daughters dance competition when she was little. One of the girls had a nail coming out of her tap shoes and it had to be removed. No one had any tools or any way to fix it. My leatherman pliers made easy work of removing the nail, allowing her to perform her tap dance in the competition. I do agree though, the dinky keychain pliers are a joke and a waste of space. That's lifestyle so you can "look cool" but are not functional in anyway. I'd argue they are actually a negative since you would "feel" prepared but your tool is inadequate for almost all jobs.
I carry a SAK Explorer in a Victorinox 4.0545 sheath for cleaner tasks like reading small print and clipping newspaper articles & coupons. On the other side of my hip I carry an old Leatherman Wave for dirtier tasks, and a MagLite LED XL50 for nighttime & lowlight conditions. The SAK magnifier and scissors and the Wave’s metal file/saw are my primary tools 👍
You just reminded me I have a tactical pen from Schrade which has a glass breaker tip and a built-in handcuff key. My EDC for most of the year would include a multi-tool for bicycle maintenance, if you have not done so recently, I suggest you go to a bicycle shop and have a look at their tools…
What, no fidget spinners? THAT's lifestyle, for most. I do recognize that for some people it is necessary/functional. I'm on the "elevated functional" trip. I carry a high-end multi-tool, a folder or fixed blade, and a flashlight. From a functional standpoint, the knife is redundant because my multi-tool already has a knife blade, and I carry a high-end one because it just WORKS. I've had enough experience with cheapo multi-tools, no mas. None of my stuff matches. I usually also carry a regular 3x5 notepad (or notecards) and a pen, often a pen I've made myself.
I carry a Koenig a McGizmo a Mont Blanc because you only live once. I prefer lifestyle that also meet function. Fantastic video thank you so much for the wonderful content.
I half agree about pen and paper. I got a medical condition, I need to type down appointments, of course I could use my phone but for some reason it is easier to remember when you have written it down on paper. The reason why I say that I half agree about your point about pen and paper is because they don't need to take pocket real estate, for instant, I got Keyport Pivot and their pen, meaning my pen is integrated with my keys and then I got Grim Workshop Credit card sized notebook in my Arc Company Boulder (small size) wallet, again without additional pocket bulk, since I already carry that wallet and key organizer.
I divide it by an edc pouch (Mighty Pouch +) which is my wallet, cards and cash, a triple A flashlight, key fob, pen and notebook and a few personal items. I carry it everyday. The second category is a tool pouch, (Maxpedition Micro), which I may take with me when needed. It also fits in my pocket but is bulky. I try to have a quality tool for any situation. Otherwise I have on me an Apple watch and phone, folding knife and often a Leatherman multitool. Your mileage may vary.
I've carried a surefire flashlight (currently the ECDL1-T), a leatherman wave and where legal, a firearm, for 24 years. The only one I don't use many times a day, literally every day, is the firearm. I keep the blade on the leatherman razor sharp and haven't felt a need for a dedicated folding knife. Literally everything else is lifestyle carry and not functional. This is for urban/suburban EDC. Woods EDC is different.
I am used to traveling a lot (pre pandemic), so my load out needs to be bladeless. Currently I have a KeySmart key organizer with a couple tools on it, which makes it a sort of bladeless SAK. (Though I dearly wish Victorinox made better blade less options.) The scissors are fine if I need to cut things, just fold out the blades all the way and I have a straight blade. I also have a small Maxpedition pouch in my other pocket. It mostly contains medications, a micro pen, floss, bandaids, and other odds and ends, plus a 3500 mAh power bank. In fairness I could probably fit everything but the power bank in an Altoids tin, but I want the power bank so I just fill up the rest of the pouch since I can. Though my new phone has much better life so I could potentially downsize. What I use the most out of all that? My lactaid, when I am having dairy. :-) Realistically, that plus tiny scissors would be plenty for my needs 99% of the time. The rest just gives me comfort in exchange for weight.
I mean, its not much of a blade, but my wife and I travel all the time (domestic and overseas) with our SAK classics. We both keep them on our key chains, so maybe they get lost in the jumble on the TSA scanners. And they're not too expensive, IF they were confiscated. I've lost two knives walking through White House security, and that was annoying (I was stupid, I knew I can't bring knives to WH meetings!).
@@cardiacbob I used to have a classic (it was a gift) that made it through the airport several times... Until it didn't. In theory I was able to mail it home to myself, but it never arrived. Plus, I love near Chicago and Chicago's public carry knife laws are stricter than most areas. Bladeless or bust, honestly.
I LOVE my tactical pen because it's so huge and noticeable that it can hardly be lost and/or forgotten, plus when people borrow it they always give it back! I don't use it for "field notes" though, just normal stuff.
I understand people can take notes on their phones, and that it can be functional. I could never understand why someone would willingly place themselves at the mercy of batteries and electronics in that situation. I also subscribe to the notion that analog writing has more benefit to me than digital means.
I think the leather slip pouch sans spyderco is sufficient as well as the pouch based system of your DIY one. While the signal is a good multitool, it's heavy and not really pocket carry friendly. Of the 3 I've mentioned I'd go with the leather slip and fine a way so add a sleeve so you can keep the swisscard with it.
I use regular Opinel No8 as ''clean'' knife for cutting food that I carry to work in my backpack. It is small, very lightweight (45grams) and very handy and sharp. As for urban EDC, it is either SAK or SOG PowerPint, depending on where I go. Also I NEVER carry knife with lockable blade as urban EDC because it could be interpreted as weapon by police or anyone else.
I like taking with me only the things I need, but that's the thing, you don't always know what you might need! A multi tool and a light are the basic for urban EDC, a bigger knife might be for self defense or car accident when you need to cut a belt, or like pepper spray, you carry them even if you don't use them, because you don't know when you need them! Same with pen and notebook, what if your phone breaks or runs out of battery and you need to take someone's phone number? You are right, they are comfort items, you feel better having them, and as the saying goes "The best tool is the one you have on you the moment you need it!" Also that mini elastic pouch you made looks cool, gotta find the tutorial video and put my sewing skills to the test!
I carry functional only. I have a SAK Bantam and a BIC lighter in my front left pocket at all times, and I have a Gerber Dime, a small OLight (forgot the model), a SAK alox classic (for the scissors) and a pill container (for aspirin and a $20 bill) on my keychain, which is a firebiner carabiner (that my daughter got me from the Joshua Tree National Forest gift shop!). But nothing matches and its all functional. I have a lot of flipper knives that I stopped carrying when I got the SAK Bantam (which I use every day). I used to carry a couple of plasters and a SAK card in my wallet, but I moved the plasters to my phone case (they fit nicely between and the SAK card to my EDC backpack (level two EDC) when I trimmed my wallet down.
Other than the usual (keys, cash/card holder and phone) my edc is vic compact and a Fenix e12 torch. The torch gets used 5x as much as the compact sak.
I'm more on the functional side too, none of my stuff matches aesthetically 😅 My EDC changes depending on where I am. Indoors: Super Tinker in one pocket, phone in the opposite. Outdoors: Chums wallet with an Alox Cadet in the pocket (along with my phone in the opposite pocket), and a small kit bag in my backpack with a Fieldmaster, Torch/Flashlight, Real Steel Luna, Knipex Pliers (87 01 125), Parker Jotter (pen) and a pad, plus a metal straw and a spork.
It really is. I have a bunch of Swiss army knifes, the Compact is in a league of its own. Once I started carrying the compact all my other 91mm Swiss Army knives collect dust Why would I need a full opener layer for urban EDC? the opener layer is outdated, the combo tool is where it’s at.
I am also a balance between lifestyle EDC and functional carry, but over the years prefer PSC (practical situational carry). Basically a small modular kit based on the estimated tasks during the day or week. Bare minimum would be a small tool with an edge.
Recently came across this video and your channel. Really helpful! I'm getting into edc, partiularly from disabled/chronic illness pov. Do you have recommendations for best types of opening/lock mechanisms (specific brand/model would be great) for weaker or arthritic hands? Thanks so much! Glenn
Hi Glenn, thanks and welcome on board. Could you clarify what you mean by opening/ lock mechanisms? What is the application? Are you talking about literal padlocks or clips and attachments? Or something entirely different?
Just so happens friend sent me button lock Elementum that I received yesterday... So still laying with it, but seems I really have to get my thumb on top of the button, and brace with fingers on other side immediately behind, in order to deploy... Result is I don't get good grip purchase on handle....more like I'm punching knife than properly holding ... Any suggestions or alternative styles if knife I could look in bro. Thanks again!
cant recommend the style PS + bit holder mod enough. absolute EDC champion when paired with a knife. sadly it’s discontinued because LM wants you to only carry big, beefy tools. I will say my only complaint about the smaller multi-tools is that they often don’t have clips and are easy to misplace, and keeping track of two tools can be annoying. I currently carry the LM Arc and think it’s great, but it’s a bit overkill. the perfect edc multi-tool doesn’t really exist imo. that’s why keychain tool + knife or full size multi-tool has been an EDC debate for so long
Other than my keys/wallet/phone, I carry a sharpie s gel pen, fenix pd36r flashlight, bic lighter, leatherman st300 in a kydex sheath on my belt, and a gerber flatiron pocket knife.
My functional EDC travels on me distributed throughout my many winter pockets, nothing matches. If I run a somewhat lifestyle EDC, say in a Viperade pouch, it goes in a sling bag with the lunch. In the warmer month, I'll redistribute my EDC in whatever pockets I have without a jacket & run the Viperade in a cargo pants pocket. Because ya know, I always need all that stuff. Someone's usually asking me if I have something. Lol.
I carry functional EDC. Victorinox Compact Victorinox Jetsetter@Work Alox HOTO Precision screwdriver Nite Ize DoohicKey This covers all my computer tech support needs and is space efficient and light. This can all be carried in my pocket if needed but I tend to just have the Victorinox Compact in my pocket and everything else in a pouch in in my rucksack.
I'm all about functional EDC and don't care what it looks like or if it matches. I carry as little as possible in my trouser pockets. In winter the other items go in my coat pockets and in summer in a fanny pack.
I carry whatever I need that day and don't spend much time on Instagram and honestly forget to take pictures even of things I'm working on, building, or modifying. Nice video! EDC used to be what you carried daily to do your job and live your life, not a photo op..
Long ago i was going to get one of those scalpel type replaceable blade knife they boast for hunting but for the price and function that Milwaukee give you a tool with multiple functions Utility blade Bottle opener Wire or rope cutter 1/4” Bit driver which allows you to carry extra screw heads or 1/4” drill bits its a game changer Also its best for each item you carry to have multi use when building your kits Also since your a knife guy get your self a boker dvalin tanto and get a tech lock and carry it apendix left you will thank me Its the best defense option No mapping Super stout knife Your hands rest right on top up it and always at the ready
Keys, wallet, phone, Dragonfly Salt, and sometimes my Craftsman folding utility knife for every trip out of the house. If I have a bag with me, then a Knipex Cobra, a Topeak right angle mini ratchet, a mini Altoids tin of bits, and notebook and writing implements. Rarely, I’ll bring a AA or AAA flashlight. Function over style.
I haven't seen a UA-cam channel yet, to ask viewers what they have, and then the UA-camr tries to come up with the best carry option. For example, a viewer has a Fisher Space Pen, a SOG Poweraccess multipletool, a Micro Streamlight rechargeable, and a Buck 110 classic. Now, the UA-camr has to put together the best carry options for that individual's gear.
Functionality due to necessity! I can totally relate to that. That's why everything I get tends to be black so they all match, even if they are budget friendly 😄
Used to weigh myself down with a bunch of stuff I'd hardly if ever use. I now carry a minimal amount if gear but have a Vanquest edcm huge maximizer bag in my car's console and a Vanquest trident 21 backpack in the trunk for longer trips that's loaded for edc/survival. One item I always have on me even in the house is a handgun concealed carried in my front pocket.
I just carry a knife in my pocket. I have a backpack whoever I go to put stuff inside like groceries. I usually have bike tools inside of it. If I'm at work I'm pretty sure my air tools could mess someone up pretty good or maybe a drill or a hydraulic press.
I go to a lot of places where if I were to carry a gun or some sort and they demanded to look at my backpack I'd end up going to jail but a small pocket knife they wouldn't care about.
It is a great quote. But the opposite must be true too, which I explored here ua-cam.com/video/eDpg-0XXGb8/v-deo.html thanks for watching and commenting!
@@urbanknifeguy Oh, I agree! It's definitely not as universal as most people think, and I'll certainly check that video out. My main take away from the quote is to get creative. You can use less tools for more things if you experiment with different ways of using them. Like you could theoretically use a knife for more than just cutting tasks, such as: prying, screwing, hammering, splitting, etc. So all tools can theoretically have function beyond their intended one, which means a single tool could fill multiple roles in your EDC.
People changing their EDC in their pocket isnt really called EDC.....if you rotate carries, i have heard this term from a wise man on youtube before but i forgot his name, EDS (Every Day System)
I believe that was Dave Canterbury. Well technically, EDC just refers what to what one carries everyday. So one can technically rotate the items in their EDC loadouts. But it is semantics. Thanks for the comment!
@@urbanknifeguy yea but i think hes not wrong tho, people carry EDC but rotate with gear and sometimes they even add a plier with them for example, wich some dont really carry them daily, depending what they need

I believe so too!
Yes I agree

Great video. The ones that puzzle me in the EDC community are;

Wow, what's the name of that lifestyle tactical pen? It's a BEAUT', and built like a tank!
It is the BOKER PLUS K.I.D. Caliber 50 Tactical Pen. Here is a link to the black one amzn.to/3J5jcbD
Haha. That was the biggest EDC flex I’ve seen in a while. But, if I had all that gear, I would do the same.
Sincerely not my intention. But I guess I can see that. Thanks for watching!
Lol.
What happens in the summer?
I carry functional EDC.
Victorinox Compact
Victorinox Jetsetter@Work Alox
HOTO Precision screwdriver
Nite Ize DoohicKey
This covers all my computer tech support needs and is space efficient and light.
This can all be carried in my pocket if needed but I tend to just have the Victorinox Compact in my pocket and everything else in a pouch in in my rucksack.
Nice! Thanks for your comment!
I'm all about functional EDC and don't care what it looks like or if it matches. I carry as little as possible in my trouser pockets. In winter the other items go in my coat pockets and in summer in a fanny pack.
Nice! Thanks for sharing!
Great video..I’d have to say I’m mostly functional..good points !
Right on! Thanks for watching!
I carry whatever I need that day and don't spend much time on Instagram and honestly forget to take pictures even of things I'm working on, building, or modifying.
Nice video! EDC used to be what you carried daily to do your job and live your life, not a photo op..
Haha thanks for watching!
It has to work, not look nice. But for example at work or in public i use an opinel no8, because people don't get scared by it.
Best urban folding knife is the millwakee utility bit driver
Thanks for your thoughts!
@@urbanknifeguy your welcome its a great option to accompany your edc a save on sharpening your defense blades
@@warlantactical that is a great point! Thanks.
@@urbanknifeguy you’re welcome
Long ago i was going to get one of those scalpel type replaceable blade knife they boast for hunting but for the price and function that Milwaukee give you a tool with multiple functions
Utility blade
Bottle opener
Wire or rope cutter
1/4” Bit driver which allows you to carry extra screw heads or 1/4” drill bits its a game changer
Also its best for each item you carry to have multi use when building your kits
Also since your a knife guy get your self a boker dvalin tanto and get a tech lock and carry it apendix left you will thank me
Its the best defense option
No mapping
Super stout knife
Your hands rest right on top up it and always at the ready
Keys, wallet, phone, Dragonfly Salt, and sometimes my Craftsman folding utility knife for every trip out of the house. If I have a bag with me, then a Knipex Cobra, a Topeak right angle mini ratchet, a mini Altoids tin of bits, and notebook and writing implements. Rarely, I’ll bring a AA or AAA flashlight. Function over style.
Thanks for sharing! That is a great collection of gear.
I think that is a great idea! Assuming the UA-camr has similar gear to make the video interesting. 💯 worth exploring! Thanks!
@@urbanknifeguy Yeah. Much gear needed.
I’m definitely in camp function, probably over functional, some might say dis functional, but there you go.😊
Love that. I must do a video called Dis-functional EDC in future 😄
I don't care what it looks like as long as its functional. I don't have a lot of money, so i think this partly influences this decision.
Functionality due to necessity! I can totally relate to that. That's why everything I get tends to be black so they all match, even if they are budget friendly 😄
I carry a SAK daily. BT ear piece to help me thru the daily public transport ride.
Thanks for sharing! Which SAK model?
Victorinox compact (:
THAT’S A FACT JACK!!
👍👌
Functionality first!
👍👍 but what will then happen to all the IG EDC accounts? 😅
I wish I could find that leatherman style
Hard to find. The ones ok eBay etc are way too expensive. Hope you find one!
EDC drinking game: every time you hear EDC take a shot!
🤣🤣🤣
Used to weigh myself down with a bunch of stuff I'd hardly if ever use.
I now carry a minimal amount if gear but have a Vanquest edcm huge maximizer bag in my car's console and a Vanquest trident 21 backpack in the trunk for longer trips that's loaded for edc/survival.
One item I always have on me even in the house is a handgun concealed carried in my front pocket.
Thanks for sharing! That is very decent gear!
Function vs Fashion EDC
Anyway i buy it both 😂
Completely logical! 🤣👍
Practical functional EDC
"The more you know, the less you have to carry." -Mors Kochanski
Interesting
❤😊
I think if you go ahead and say "I keep my edc strictly functional" that's also some sort of lifestyle
Yes I have to agree 😅
cool
Thanks!

Sirvivalists really are the new hipsters, aren't they?
Yes. Preppers and survivalists in one group! 🤣
This just shows you to never get in the clusterf EDC is
😅😅
A lot of unnecessary crap
A lot, unnecessary, and crap are all and each subjective.
@@urbanknifeguy walking around with pockets full of trinkets is silly and unsustainable. Crap
@user-xu9uh3dw9u I agree if pockets are full of trinklets.
ua-cam.com/video/jx-lWRx2Yv0/v-deo.html It appears I am a lifestyle edc guy 🙂
Nice! 🤣🤣
Look at that, another video of junk that doesn't have a single blemish of use on them
Thank you for the compliment.
The biggest tool in the video is the guy recording
