The Darkness weren't and aren't a spoof of glam rock so much as a love letter. When they came out in 2003, British Rock was on the tail end of the height of Britpop and was taking itself quite seriously, while there was also a lot of mainstream pop dominating the charts. The Darkness were very much about just injecting a bit of fun back into rock music and it was very much needed in the UK music scene at the time.

i agree that its needed now, im glad i was made aware of The Darkness a decade ago cause theyre honestly one of my favorite British rock bands due to their deep love of glam without becoming parody (example. Ninja Sex Party or their subsequent partners)

Someone replied to Justin Hawkins’ UA-cam channel a while back about his thoughts on “joke bands”, and it got me thinking about people think about the darkness.
There’s a difference between having a good sense of humor and being a joke band.

Aside from _The Darkness_ being the best name for a rock band ever, what I love about these guys is that they don't take themselves too seriously. They have this retro-70s style and they're just having fun with it.

It's a well documented fact that one of the only effective ways to fight off a space squid is to shoot laser beams at it from your guitar. The guys in The Darkness know it and the main characters from the old Silver Hawks cartoon also knew it.

Brian May even performed with them in 2011, including this song! Here is the link ua-cam.com/video/4t5aOdDIXJ4/v-deo.html. enjoy! Adam Lambert even sang it on the show Glee.

    Jamel_AKA_Jamal,
FINALLY!!! Man, you're the best! I'm glad you got to experience the most EPIC music video of ALL TIME!!! :)
This was The Darkness's first release. I remember seeing this for the first time on VH1 and at first I didn't know what to make of it. But one thing was for sure. I couldn't stop watching! The Darkness then became one of my all time favorite bands and Justin Hawkins's voice is unmatched in its sound.
Even if you don't get a chance to react to another one of their songs, I'm SO HAPPY you got to experience The Darkness in their most EPIC GLORY with "I Believe In A Thing Called Love!"
    Seriously Man, you're the best!!!
    vgv
Oh, and to answer your question. No, this was not a spoof. In their early interviews, Justin stated, this is them, not a joke.

Lol! They were a throwback to the 70's and 80's. Serious one hit wonder. You couldn't help watching. Like a car wreck!

The Darkness is paying homage to 70’s arena rock like Led Zeppelin and Queen. This stuff is so many bands rolled into one… and smoked with love.
Check out the band Steel Panther for a band that is having fun with 80s L.A.-style hair metal.
    🤘

Man this made my day!! I love the Darkness! Great band and they so don't take themselves so seriously😂. Then again they really can play and write. I've seen them live a few times and have never been disappointed at all.
There are so many tunes you could check out by them such as Love Only a Feeling, Black Shuk, Keep Your Hands Off My Woman, Solid Gold, Rock n Roll is meant to Die, Nothing's Gonna Stop Us, Barbarian, Bald, One way ticket to hell, Open Fire, etc Just fun British Hard Rock.
If you want a novelty band that's fake is Spinal Tap.

The Darkness are one of the most fun bands, Justin Hawkins, the lead singer, famously doesn't take himself seriously at all, such a brilliant sense of humour, but the music is top notch.

OMG. Imo this is one of the greatest rock bands EVER that not nearly enough people know about. If AC/DC had a love child with Queen, this band is it. They deserve to be revered. I am on a mission to make it so.❤❤🎉😂
Astonishing guitars, the best front man since Freddie Mercury, and a two Les Paul guitar inferno (that happen to be brothers) with a killer rhythm section.
Rock is my religion & this band is the Holy Grail. Can you tell I wish I was a rock-critic? Lol.

Great band ❤ 😁 they have a different drummer now ....Rufus Taylor, the son of Queen's Roger Taylor. Another great one is ' Growing on me ' they also did a great cheezy Christmas number 😂

They're the funniest band in rock, especially in their videos, but their musicality and songcraft are seriously very good. They regularly have four or five tunes on every album that I wish I had written. Queen meets Thin Lizzy.

Finally! This song makes my heart happy. When I first heard it, it was such a throwback to all the classic rock my dad played when I was little (I'd get quizzed on the band/singer and song title when he'd drive me somewhere.) Hadn't heard that sound in any new music to that point!

There are several 80s/90s Mexican bands with a big sense of fun and stupendous music that would be worthy watching or reacting to: Botellita de Jerez, Amantes de Lola, Neón, Fobia, Rostros Ocultos, Kenny y Los Eléctricos, La Lupita, La Cuca, La Castañeda, Los Estrambóticos, Tex Tex...just to name a few

Lead singer, Justin Hawkins, was named after Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues and by the time that he was ten years old could sing and play on the guitar Queen's entire back catalogue, hence the obvious influence on the band's music and his vocal style and stage persona. Aside from his solo work and with the band, Justin has also worked in recent years with current Queen frontman, Adam Lambert (as well as being the Chameleon on the first series of The Masked Singer UK last year :) ) .

The Darkness is alive and rocking! They are fantastic live, and you can check out their two streamed Xmas 2020 concerts. There is a song called Heart Explodes which makes it do that. You may realise I love 'em. By the way I'm 69.
