The Darkness weren't and aren't a spoof of glam rock so much as a love letter. When they came out in 2003, British Rock was on the tail end of the height of Britpop and was taking itself quite seriously, while there was also a lot of mainstream pop dominating the charts. i agree that its needed now, im glad i was made aware of The Darkness a decade ago cause theyre honestly one of my favorite British rock bands due to their deep love of glam without becoming parody (example. Ninja Sex Party or their subsequent partners)
Someone replied to Justin Hawkins’ UA-cam channel a while back about his thoughts on “joke bands”, and it got me thinking about people think about the darkness. There’s a difference between having a good sense of humor and being a joke band.
Aside from _The Darkness_ being the best name for a rock band ever, what I love about these guys is that they don't take themselves too seriously. They have this retro-70s style and they're just having fun with it.
It's a well documented fact that one of the only effective ways to fight off a space squid is to shoot laser beams at it from your guitar. The guys in The Darkness know it and the main characters from the old Silver Hawks cartoon also knew it.
Well technically, only Bluegrass was using a guitar to shoot beams against alien monsters. The rest of the Silverhawks shot laser beams from holes on their shoulders.
This song and video pays homage to Queen who were a huge influence. In the current formation, since 2015, the drummer is none other than Rufus Taylor, son of Queen's Roger Taylor.
It's takes skill to walk the line between a little/funny/campy bit still rock out vs being a cheesy gimmick that gets old quick, and they do it perfectly.
"One Way Ticket", "Is It Just Me?", "Love Is Only A Feeling", "Girlfriend"... these guys were such a great 70's/80's throwback band back in the 00's....
Super cool dude. There is a video where children were interviewing the band. And in the end, Justin was taking pictures with the kids and gave them free merch. He made them feel special instead of acting like a rockstar just going through the motions.
Needless to say, Queen was one of their influences. In fact, Roger Taylor's son Rufus Tiger Taylor has been drumming for the darkness since 2015. Brian May even performed with them in 2011, including this song! Here is the link ua-cam.com/video/4t5aOdDIXJ4/v-deo.html. enjoy! Adam Lambert even sang it on the show Glee.
I love the lightheartedness and fun of this Video, and the song itself is just a cheerful concept. Justin Hawkins [Rides Again] has a magnificent range for a man, and the Darkness is still a working band, after 20+ years! Loved that you reacted to this, and just had fun for a few minutes.
I remember when this came out. I appreciated that they could play so well, yet didn’t take themselves too seriously. Like they were having fun. Thanks for the reminder, Jamel!
These guys are a novelty act that can actually rock out. They're the machismo of AC/DC, the glam of Queen, and the sense of humor of Bloodhound Gang rolled into a ball.
@@america1st721 Queen were certainly glam, at least stylistically speaking. If you see some of their earlier performances in the 70s they wore very flamboyant outfits! Musically, they covered just about every rock sub-genre going.
The Darkness can really rock, the vocals throw people off because they are different but they have written some really great rock songs. I'd suggest "One Way Ticket to Hell and Back", "Girlfriend", "Is it Just Me", and " Everybody Have a Good Time" by them.
These guys came along at a time when we needed someone to put a smile back on music. Didn't take themselves too seriously, borrowed the riffs from other bands under their own admission , and played some great cheesy uplifting glam rock.
I love these kind of groups that lovingly poke fun at the ridiculousness of the excesses of rock music of the past. But make legit music at the same time. It’s really fun.
The singer was a contestant on the first season of the UK Masked Singer. He was the Chameleon. He actually did an nice rendition of Cyndi Lauper's "True Colors"..
Honestly I love these guys, their entire first album "permision to land" is fire and every song is a banger that is worth reacting to, but if I had to recomend a few try Black Shuck, Your really growing on me, and Love is only a feeling
At the very first Queen fan gathering, they won the karaoke band competition (pre record deal). They got permission from Brian May, plugged in, and rocked the house.
This video is so much fun! I was cautious to watch it again because a few years ago I watched it several times and couldn't get the song out of my head for days! Maybe it won't happen this time. A big "thumbs up". Thanks Jamel!
I bought this album. There are some severely underrated songs on there. Love Is Only A Feeling and Friday Night deserve way more credit then they ever got. Holding My Own and Growing On Me were my personal favorites.

I love this song so much, it's on my rotation. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a fun and happy song that makes you smile! And this song makes me smile.
LOVE The Darkness. A fantastic band that likes their rock serious, but never themselves. Amazing live band, and really nice guys to boot. The singer and guitarist are brothers, and not only is Justin a brilliant singer, he also plays most of the lead guitars. There's lots of great songs in their discography, I'd love to see you do more.
I saw these guys on The Family Values Tour back in the early 2000’s and was absolutely blown away by the talent and showmanship they had. I only knew this song and thought what a shame their other songs didn’t get airplay in the states. Loved your reaction as always! 💜🎵💜
Great that you got around to them. Give 'Growing on Me' and 'Friday Night' a react. There was a very short period in time where it felt like The Darkness were the biggest thing going, at least here in the UK, and then it felt like they fell off the face of the planet.
Loved this band when they got famous. I remember watching a video of them playing live with my daughter when she was 10 or 12 years old. The singer was calling out to the crowd, Give me a D, the crowd yelled D. Expecting him to spell out the name , he instead yelled out give me an arkness..... my daughter laughed until she almost fell off the couch LOL.
Just an incredible song & great band! I taught BOTH my children to play it on guitar....bc their mom HATES it & they crank it up constantly. Great reaction Jamal
Funny you should drop this on the day you did. I wasn't able to watch it right away, because I was out dancing to the song at my wedding. I appreciate you all joining in with me and celebrating love in a rockin' good time. #LoveAndPeace
First time I ever heard this song I was like WTF?! But it grew on me, and now one of my fav bands. Seriously talented guys who just have fun with their music. I still have "Permission To Land" cd, somewhere in my collection of cds. Friday Night, is another good one on that album. I would say, I always enjoyed all the songs, since I brought it when they were popular.
Campy as can be. For something completely different, would love to hear a reaction to Mazzy Star, Fade into You. Hope Sandoval, the lead singer, has a birthday coming up in a few days. Thanks.
British are something about being kinky and that’s why I love so many groups from there. This video is pure gold. I watch it when I need to cheer me up with the music, outfits and all campy stuff! Love them indeed!

Great band ❤ 😁 they have a different drummer now ....Rufus Taylor, the son of Queen's Roger Taylor. Another great one is ' Growing on me ' they also did a great cheezy Christmas number 😂
They're the funniest band in rock, especially in their videos, but their musicality and songcraft are seriously very good. They regularly have four or five tunes on every album that I wish I had written. Queen meets Thin Lizzy.
Finally! This song makes my heart happy. When I first heard it, it was such a throwback to all the classic rock my dad played when I was little (I'd get quizzed on the band/singer and song title when he'd drive me somewhere.) Hadn't heard that sound in any new music to that point!
Ha! Love it. I used to bump into the guitarist from time to time in good old Norwich, England. Good old boys ;) It's all very tongue in cheek. I particularly like their Christmas song. Ha ha.
There are several 80s/90s Mexican bands with a big sense of fun and stupendous music that would be worthy watching or reacting to: Botellita de Jerez, Amantes de Lola, Neón, Fobia, Rostros Ocultos, Kenny y Los Eléctricos, La Lupita, La Cuca, La Castañeda, Los Estrambóticos, Tex Tex...just to name a few
Lead singer, Justin Hawkins, was named after Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues and by the time that he was ten years old could sing and play on the guitar Queen's entire back catalogue, hence the obvious influence on the band's music and his vocal style and stage persona. Aside from his solo work and with the band, Justin has also worked in recent years with current Queen frontman, Adam Lambert (as well as being the Chameleon on the first series of The Masked Singer UK last year :) ) .
These guys have a ton of great songs....'Is it Just Me'...'Girlfriend'...'Friday Night'....'Nothings gonna stop us'....and the absolutely ripping..'English Country Garden'...Justin Hawkins is one of the best frontmen ever...and a respectable guitarist to boot...'Give me a D....Give me an Arkness!!!!....
The Darkness is alive and rocking! They are fantastic live, and you can check out their two streamed Xmas 2020 concerts. There is a song called Heart Explodes which makes it do that. You may realise I love 'em. By the way I'm 69.
I hated his vocals the first time I heard this song. Thanks to their new drummer, I chose to give them a second chance. So glad I did! I love them now!

Dan does the 2nd lead, but your point stands.

Awesome video once again 👍, didn't think many people knew about these guys
Lead singer, Justin Hawkins, was named after Justin Hayward of the Moody Blues and by the time that he was ten years old could sing and play on the guitar Queen's entire back catalogue, hence the obvious influence on the band's music and his vocal style and stage persona. Aside from his solo work and with the band, Justin has also worked in recent years with current Queen frontman, Adam Lambert (as well as being the Chameleon on the first series of The Masked Singer UK last year :) ) .
Taylor Hawkins is a cousin of theirs ..
One of my favorite bands! BRAVO!
THEY
DON'T
CARE
If you saw The Darkness in a small venue on the Permission To Land tour, you were present at greatness.
Greatest pure rock band of the last 20 years.
His vocals were very polarizing when this came out . hated it or loved it.
I hated his vocals the first time I heard this song. Thanks to their new drummer, I chose to give them a second chance. So glad I did! I love them now!
I gotta say it again ...GIBSONs dropping out the ceiling ? I WAS HOOKED !
I love the Darkness because the are so British. Keep rocking my brothers!
With love from Germany
This band is awesome, Jamel. Check out their entire catalog. You won't be disappointed. New album out Oct '21!
