Beans look great! And I really like that pea sheller. I actually like that it runs on No Electricty. I can see my grandson enjoying helping me with this job. Thanks for sharing it with us. Take care & stay cool.
I remember as a child sitting in the back room with my grandparents and my aunt and each of with two buckets and a bowl, one for pods, one for shells, and the bowl for the peas. I haven't had much luck recreating their grand garden but I'm hoping for a small harvest in my container garden this year. That hand device looks wonderful! I'm sure nostalgia will be nice for the first harvest, but after that I know I'll look into buying one of these for myself!
This video was super satisfying to watch, especially the hulling machine. I'm in 9b, central CA Sierra Nevada foothills. We bought a packet of these beans to grow, but never planted them this summer. It's Oct 2 now, it's been in the 80s - 90s during the day, I'm gonna plant like three seeds for funsies to see what happens, first frost not expected till December. I just can't wait to do it right next year!!!
OMG!!!! I'm ordering this thing as soon as I get get done watching this!!! I'm sitting here for the first time doing these peas!! Neighbor gave us a 5 gallon bucket full if these purple peas!!! :0! Thanks for this info!!!!
Those Pinkeye Hull Peas look great. I have never seen them before. I am in the UK and will check with my local garden center. I have subed you so I can watch all your latest videos. With best wishes
Our peas are good this year...still have more coming. I wanted to get one of those shellers, but they are a LOT more expensive than I expected. I think one of the motorized models might be worth it if we grew a lot of peas (which we might do next year!).
I think you are smashing some of the beans doing it that way, I suppose if you had thousands of pods it might be easier this way but idk I would probably keep hand shelling
Try to not harvest too young. Purple hulls should be purple. Also when you check a pod to see if it is ripe to pick, if you catch em when they are just getting a tiny bit loose in the pod and the skin is bendy and leathery on the ends, then it’s perfect. If you wait too long then you have dried peas. I lay the dry ones out on big plates or trays and move em around a little for a few days. When really dry you can keep em in jars until needed. Then soak overnight and cook normally.
I don't know what I'm doing but this is my 2nd year to grow purple hull peas. When my peas first form the pod, they're green. They quickly turn purple. Within just a day or two. And they stay purple. So I have no idea when to harvest. The pods are already purple before they even mature.

I'd rather do it by hand and not break none of them. Like how the Indians did and the Africans did a long time ago. Thats what motivates me to do things by hand
We used to shell bushels at a time by hand. Sometimes I think that's what families today need more of ,and throw the phones down!
mikeysback70 AMEN!!!
Oh how I wish I were 40 yrs younger. I sure do miss having a garden. 😢
Anyway, that is such a clever device !! 😃

Rebecca Jones Yes, it is fun to do it the nostalgic way, but its nice to sometimes just get it done, especially when there is a lot.
Peas peas peas peas peas peas peas peas peas peas peas peas peas. Peas and beans are not the same. You have peas. This is astonishing.
More satisfying shelling by hand up close and personal.

How awesome!
I like hand shelling. Something about putting my hands on what I’ve grown
Used to do that by hand with an older folk boy the conversations were priceless
Yes pea sheller very cool tool! Thanks for watching!
...and the beans tasted so good too! Thanks for watching!
BTW, Hope you make more videos 😃

Rub oil or butter around top of pot to avoid boiling over. Looks delicious
Nice job of massing the peas.
Nice shelling gadget! The beans look very yummy!
That is pretty darn cool the shelling gadget ...
I think it would be much quicker and more efficient shelling them by hand. It seems like a bunch were getting crushed.
This gadget seems to be for dry beans
I will have to have one
These things love hot weather in direct sun light. All the ones I kept in the shade got bugs and disease but full sun nothing wrong.

I like them when they are green, Throw some bacon or ham in with them while they are cooking. excellent eating
so i guess the dried beans can be used as seeds?
Yes but you can eat them as well. Just soke them over night.
Can you put more than one bean in the bean peeler or do you have to put only one bean at a time.
can you dry Purple Hull Pinkeye Cowpea and use them like you would use dried pinto beans???
Is the sheller stil in operation today? (6 years later)
How plants gave you that amount of beans?
What was the harvest day

I’m truly from the country because I would never use a gadget like that. We always do ours by hand with my family. Which we enjoy that time.
I thought you had to dry them for a week before you take them out of the shells

water more but still it will happen occasalily
You seem to be unsure of what you call them. They are Pink Eye, Purple Hulls. Easy.
When they turn deep purple they are going to be a little hard.
you shoulda just let them all dry in their shell and then rub em together and they'll separate better. and they wont get smooshed at all
: )
Man Them Are FUCKED UP If I Crushed Every other Bean when My Granmaw Shelled Peas Shed Make Do Twice as Many You Can't Be Crushing them Like that!
I’m confused....are they beans or peas?
E eu qui pensava que só tinha feijão no Brasil
Black eye peas are not purple hull peas. I wish I knew about that machine before I shelled 10 lbs.. Thanks nice video...

I could shell by hand faster & with less effort!
