How Matt Hasselbeck ALMOST Joined the Miami Dolphins

- In 2001, the Green Bay Packers traded away quarterback Matt Hasselbeck to the Seattle Seahawks. But what you might not know is just how close this came to never happening. Because the Packers had a deal in place to trade Hasselbeck to the Miami Dolphins instead, with the deal falling apart at the very last minute due to greed on the part of the Dolphins. This is the story behind how Matt Hasselbeck almost became a Dolphin

Hasselbeck was drafted in the sixth round in 1998. He would be the last sixth round pick to have any success at quarterback.
lmao the greatest player in nfl history was a sixth round quarterback after 1998.
Gardner Minshew, obviously.
I see what you did there. You thought we all forgot about Marc Bulger in 2000!!!
@@astrostar49 Yeah that’s it, that’s the ticket!
The Dolphins just don't seem to want to build a complete offense. All those years of Dan Marino and no running game. Marino retires, they get Williams but never get the passing game back.
In 2007, Matt Hasselback was my backup QB in a fantasy league I was in. Tom Brady was my starter (I drafted Brady in the 2nd round and everyone thought I drafted him too high, turns out to have been my smartest pick that year). I drafted Hasselback to keep him away from others and to have a good backup in case Brady got injured.
Wow what a story.
Matt Hasselbeck’s first playoff start was against the Packers. He infamously said “We want the ball and we’re gonna score!” He ended up throwing the game winning touchdown pass. To the Packers.
Thanks for the reminder.
I know
That soundbyte makes me cringe still, not a Seahawks fan, but the overconfident utterance got such a karmic backlash and in heart breaking fashion
He will never live that down, but the receiver on the play ran the wrong route. Hasselbeck threw it where he was supposed to, but the only one there was Al Harris.
He bounced back and took them to the Super Bowl two seasons later, where the zebras and the Steelers kept him from a ring.
I remember that - and to this day I still admire the competitive cojones of confidence he had to say that.
The list of guys who backed up Brett Favre at one point is incredible... Hasselbeck, Kurt Warner, Mark Brunell, Aaron Brooks, Ty Detmer, Aaron Rodgers, even Jim McMahon in his twilight.
Let's be fair to Trent Dilfer. He started one game in October. The vast majority of the no-touchdown streak was with Tony Banks under center. Trent wasn't "bad" at all in 2000, he was mediocre and replaceable...
Bruh WTF are you talking about? Through 8 games, Trent threw 12tds and 11ints. Stats like that on any other team, they are looking at a top 5 pick
Even if we just focus on his play, Trent would have been captain check down and couldn't move the team without the assistance of excellent running, special teams and defense.
1. In 1998, the Bears tried to sign Hasselbeck from GB's practice squad, and Matt wouldn't go. He didn't think he was ready.
2. The Dolphins didn't draft Drew Brees because they didn't think he was any better than Jay Fiedler. Read that last sentence again.
Matt Hasselbeck is the 2000s Steve DeBerg probably wont be making Caton but he was NFL best kept secret
As a Dolphin fan since the early 80s....I still remember this and was a huge Hasselbeck guy.
My disappointment when we blew this non trade.
Lifelong seahawks fan here. I remember how much alot of people here didn't like Matt at first. In 2002 there was actually a large group of seahawk fans who wanted Trent dilfer to start instead. Used to drive me nuts. My step dad was one of them
Really good video. Had no clue about this and I'm a Packers fan.
Miami hasn't had a pro bowl qb since 1995. They made a big mistake in not getting this trade done.
So Miami could've either had Brees or Hasslebeck.
Miami also chose tua over herbert
I'm glad it didn't. Go Seahawks! #DontHasselthebeck
Its funny you mention Shark Tank because I have been binge watching the British version Dragon's Den here on YT, its the exact same with different accents. And as a Seahawks fan I am thankful for the Packers being the ones who screwed up for one and for the Dolphins... well being the Dolphins, who funny enough were my dads favorite team when he was a kid and we are here in Washington and he has never lived anywhere else, because he was around before the Seahawks existed, but even after they came into existence the Dolphins were a close second or a co-favorite team with the Seahawks. Until the last 20 years or so he fell off the Dolphins wagon but the more recent successes of the Seahawks isn't a bandwagon either he liked them as soon they they came into the league we cheer for the local teams. Its just the Dolphins have not had as much to cheer for the last 20 years. He does want to see them do well again. And I for one hope Tua doesn't satisfy peoples label of calling him a bust, I want to see him do well. I am grateful this trade falling through happened though the first superbowl run was when I was a freshman in high school and I remember the excitement like it was yesterday, and then I started hating the Steelers as much of the other NFL fanbases also do, lol.
Almost got Hasselbeck, Brees, and now Brady. ouch
The Dolphins had Marino for 17 seasons and never got him enough help. This is karmic retribution.
One thing that I never understood is why Hasselbeck went in as the presumed starter... he had never started a game before, was a 6th round pick, and his college stats are mediocre (at best). The guy they signed to be his backup? Trent Dilfer, the reigning Super Bowl champ.
6:06 for our favorite catchphrase
Also, I don't know how Hasselbeck would have fared under Dave Wansteadt, but the Dolphins desperately needed even just an average passer to help them go places. That team was pretty much set everywhere else, except QB. At the very least Hasselbeck would have been better than Jay Fiedler. Shame, because that was a good defense, and running back that was wasted.
I really liked Hasselbeck thought he didnt get enough respect
Mike Mike Holmgren made Matt Hasselbeck good in Seattle with the West Coast office
You totally missed that with that 2001 first round pick that Miami didn't send to Green Bay, they solved their quarterback problem by drafting Drew Brees. Oh wait, they took a nickelback who would never play since they already had two pro-bowl CBs.
Asinine that they drafted a corner back in the first round with the best duo in the nfl over drew Brees after failing to trade for Matt. Rick spielman absolutely destroyed the dolphins
Great story. I know Russell Wilson has surpassed Matt Hasselbeck as the best QB in franchise history, but even as a 49ers fan I always thought Matt was a really good quarterback that was consistently underrated. Maybe I liked his story (6th round pick), and liked seeing another quarterback thrive in Mike Holmgren's (old 49ers OC) offense. He seemed like a guy that really maximized his limited athleticism to be one of the better passers in the league.
Dolphins have had bad luck last 20 plus years, pass on signing Drew Brees, pass on dradting Matt Ryan
This unofficial Official Jaguar Gator 9 historian will remind everyone you made a video about a trade proposal in 1969 in which the Raiders would send Running Back Pete Banaszak to the Dolphins, only for the trade to fall through.
So it came out being Hasselbeck & Hutch? Nice trade. Is it me or is it weird seeing ol'Matthew in this Packers rig?
Also yeah he was pretty good.
*****CORRECTION*****
I think you meant to say, “Where they (Seahawks) made it to Super Bowl XL before losing to the referees.” Seahawks were robbed and the Steelers were gifted that Super Bowl by the zebras. Do a video on that. lol
Wow this would have really changed the nfl!
So Miami botched THIS trade before botching the Drew Brees signing?!
No wonder they haven't had a franchise quarterback since Marino retired. And when I hear Cowboys fans wanting to get rid of Prescott (and even when they were calling for Romo to go), I point to Miami as EXHIBIT B as to why you don't nonchalantly mess around with the quarterback position. Of course, Dallas had similarly instability at QB from 01-06, so Cowboys fans should DEFINITELY know better.
Jeez! Looks like a game of Madden with all those 7 step drop backs.
_Or Mike Martz's wet dream....._
*(Shudder)*
Sooo basically if Hasselbeck is a Fin then maybe Tom Brady doesn't become the GOAT
miami dolphins...
YOU GOT GREEDY!!!
Whats crazy is this didnt immediately backfire. The Dolphins despite undermining their starting QBs confidence with trade talks for a backup rolled off 3 straight winning seasons before the wheels came off when Ricky Williams was suspended/retired
Dolphins gonna Dolphin
Matt is a good QB
It was the system that made hassleback good if he would had went to Miami he would have been 🗑
If Hasselbeck goes to the Dolphins, maybe he falls victim to the Bears QB curse, which is contagious and was being spread to the Dolphins by former Bears coach Dave Wannstedt.
Explain please
@@jaysonraphaelmurdock8812 The Bears haven't had a star quarterback since Sid Luckman. Wannstedt, who had coached the Bears for some time, took over the Dolphins job the year after Dan Marino retired, and the Dolphins haven't had a star quarterback since. Mike Ditka and Lovie Smith never had a star QB in their stops after Chicago, either. I don't really know if that's any of those guys' fault, maybe Hasselbeck would have been a success in Miami, it was a facetious comment.
@@big8dog887 Wow that's nuts
I'm not sure I would've given the Packers a 1st-round pick for Hasselbeck. However, the Dolphins needed improve their passing attack and failed to do so both then and in 2006. The quest to replace Dan Marino continued.
And, depending on who you believe, continues to this day.
@@CTubeMan oh it definitely continues, at least Tua degree

@@drewdixon5556 thanks, I know you are a "who dat" but I have been saying who dey since childhood.
And if the Packers had Miami’s pick they could have taken Reggie Wayne or Drew Brees
i think he was the best qb my seahawks ever had
Thanks for the added depression Jag
Sorry to anyone here I have offended in the comments section . There are a few of you guys that I think of as friends and I think I may have irritated you recently with my attempt at cutesy humor, and I am going to try to be more respectful

As far as I know you’ve done nothing wrong. In fact I appreciate your responses to my comments.
i use humour all of the time. if it offends someone or they don't get it then f them. no need to apologize for it.
So the Seahawks traded Jamal Reynolds for Matt Hasselbeck AND Steve Hutchinson... LOL I'd say THAT was the bigger issue than the Dolphins fucking up
