    I had a great night in The Everyman Palace in Cork, Ireland. I think it was November and1998!
    After a bunch of years and a bunch of videos like this I think the name of the venue was so apt...

    Loved this episode. Always like the sound of a 12 string. I don't own any because I really can't count past 6 but man they sound great. I live in Virginia but I'm in Baltimore Maryland for work sometimes. Pretty cool to know that guitar came from so close. Anyway, great show and be safe up north maestro😎

    Very cool guitar and I had heard from another musician that old 12 strings were tuned down one or two steps because the necks didn't have truss rods. I'll have to tune down to 'D' on the 12 string I have used on occasion to see what it sounds like. It's interesting that this is a 12 string but there are only 6 bridge pins. So each double course of strings is attached to the bridge by one bridge pin. They must be pretty hefty pins.

    I've wondered myself if there's a connection between 12 string and bajo sexto. There does seem to be a tradition of 12 string in Tejano music in the early 20th century, and kind of died out with Lidia Mendoza. I think Macias started out making them and other stuff, and ended up spending all his time shifting over to making bajo sextos and quintos.

    You’re speaking the kings truth.....only learned the 12 string tuning not so many years ago. Practical, sensible and one of the very few approaches for these gems. Should have listens to lead belly, just a little bit closer. That’s why so many of these gems didn’t survive time and toil, hurricane and drought at full pitch ...under a bed or in a closet. I include some Yamahas in that bunch. You are going deep tonight...I have that same exact trim on an unknown v shaped neck, v-shaped ladder braced unknown late 1800’s or early 1900’s Brazilian parlor I picked up for 24$....and just a few years ago. There are still unknown deals out there folks. Not many though....beside the Kalamazoo KG-32 I bought for 35$ 6 years ago. Cheers 🥂!
    I know, I know ...I rubbed it in a bit raw. Not all of us can afford TC Crandall. Not all of us deserve TC...I know, I don’t. “I’m not worthy”

    I have a Seagull 12 string that I've had for about 3 years... I'm second owner and the guitar itself is about an 05 off the top of my head... if I tune it down a whole step, it's almost too low in the action. I pretty much keep it tuned to pitch and (knock on wood).... previous owner bought it new from the shop and claims to have always kept it there... it tunes and stays in tune surprisingly well...

    I once heard (a video) of Pete Seeger stating that Lead Belly tuned to “somewhere around” Bb

    • @SkipPlaysStrings
      @SkipPlaysStrings Рік тому +1

      He did say that, but it seems that Leadbelly's tuning changed over time, and there is the idea floating about that he actually kept his guitar respectably in pitch but rather that most recordings are played at the wrong speed. He was known to have definitely tuned to both B-E-A-D-F#-B, and one step higher at "C Standard". Likely also Bb and perhaps even C#.

    • @lkgreenwell

      @@SkipPlaysStrings One of the, if not *the*, earliest memories I have of reading is the italic “(H Ledbetter)” on my parent’s 78 of ‘Goodnight Irene’. Don’t forget Huddy did a lot of playing without any reference tones available, so “good enough for farmwork” had to do!

    Steve, as a self professing Socialist , don't you think it would be intellectually honest of you to liquidate your guitar collection for the good of the community? Socialism is system in which the community/government owns the means of production after all, and despite you making a comfortable living owning your means of production like a Capitalist, I'm sure the government could use the funds stolen from that to fund some of the programs in line with your socialist views ...and you can feel good about living your message. Win Win lmao.
