The plot of this movie sounds kind of wacky. Young girl is a welder in a steel mill by day, an exotic dancer by night, and dreams of getting into a prestigious school of dance. Somehow it all works and has some kick ass music along the way. The dance routines at the night club are memorable.
I will ALWAYS love this song. Primo dance tune, but also her vocals. And Jennifer Beals was fantastic in the role!

This is from the movie "Flashdance" starring Jennifer Beals. She's the dancer but there was also a stand in for the difficult dance-moves.
I'm pretty sure Beals did very little of her own dancing.

One of my all time favorite movies "FLASHDANCE"!! It's more then a movie, It's a cultural icon that came to define a time and place in the 1980's to an entire generation!!
My sister took on the Flashdance look totally: leg warmer and oversized t-shirts with the necks cut out. This movie is so upbeat and fun. Also, the main character was a welder, first and last time I’ve seen a woman in that profession in film!

The dance section was the main character auditioning for a dance academy. The film was huge but this song was bigger. Check out Irene singing Fame. She actually starred in that film.

Irene also had a big hit with another movie theme of a movie she starred in called, ‘Fame’. You would definitely want to check that out. The star of this movie was actually Jennifer Beals, a beautiful actress of mixed heritage. She was not a trained dancer. The one who did her serious dance moves was in the sequel to Saturday Fever called, Stayin Alive. Irene was also in a movie in mid ‘70’s called ‘Aaron Loves Angela’, & ‘Sparkle’ which was centered around a girl singing group. A remake was done about 8 yrs ago starring Jordan Sparks (American Idol winner) & Whitney Houston as her mother. I believe Irene Cara actually won an Oscar for best performance of a movie soundtrack, ‘What A Feeling’. She actually opened the awards night with a performance & a group of dancers. Her vocal power & delivery are reminiscent of disco queen & legendary artist, Donna Summer, R.I.P. If there ever were a movie made telling Donna Summer story, Irene should be the one to do it, hands down!

When the movie Flashdance came out, and this song with it, and this lead character who worked as a welder during the day, and as a dancer on stage in a club at night,… I absolutely flipped my lid! I wanted to be able to dance like her, but I was already too old to start that kind of athletic gymnastic dancing. (I Learned as an eight year old, that I wasn’t flexible enough and didn’t have the balance to be a gymnast.) It sucked, but I still adore this song, and the dance scenes from the movie that this video shows snippets of!
And yes, Irene should have laurels for her singing, and this song is one of her best!

You're right, Jay, about the dancing. Once again your intuition is right on target! Irene Cara did the singing. Jennifer Beals played the part. But the actual dancing was done by Jennifer's body double, French dancer Marine Jahan. That fact was kept from the press because the film makers wanted to create the illusion that Jennifer, who played the main character, was doing the dancing herself.
This song was HUGE! It was the #6 song of the entire 80's decade. It's from the movie & Soundtrack, "Flashdance." I was 11 when it was out, and I remember singing "Take your pants off... and make it happen." I remember my mom saying, "Okay Bill. That's enough." I didn't have any idea what I was saying. I was just being funny. :)
