Time Team S20-E10 Wolsey's Lost Palace

  • For 100 years schoolboys have been playing a few feet above the remains of the most opulent palace in Britain.
    The Manor of More was masterminded by Henry VIII's right-hand man, the all-powerful religious leader and statesman Cardinal Wolsey, who was also responsible for Hampton Court Palace. Tudor visitors remarked that it was grander than Hampton Court.
    But the palace went missing until the 1950s, when a group of pupils at Northwood School in Hertfordshire discovered its remains beneath their school playing field.
    Now one of those schoolboys - Martin Biddle, who is now one of the country's most distinguished archaeologists - joins Tony and the Team as they try to piece together the complete picture of this huge palace.
    In its heyday, the Manor of More would have been an opulent playground fit for royalty and state visitors. Like Hampton Court, it was built as a place in which to entertain. Thomas More and Catherine of Aragon would have known it intimately.
    But working out the layout of the palace is as tough a challenge as the Team have had for a long while.
    There should be a huge front courtyard, but where is it? There should be a long gallery running off the back range, somewhere under the school's tennis courts. But it's equally elusive.
    But, finally, enough pieces of this challenging Tudor jigsaw fall into place for the Team to visualise the splendour that once stood here, with its towered gatehouse rising majestically out of a wide moat.

    I love the fact that the school teachers took the opportunity to bring their classes out to see the trenches first-hand. Its not every day you can stand on the edge of a real archeological trench and probably ask questions of the people ding the digging. Well done!

    I was always taught that Hampton Court Palace originally belonged to Wolsey and that he had created it in an extremely wealthy style. When Henry found out, Wolsey attempted to placate the king by gifting him with Hampton Court (it didn't work.) Wolsey had made some bad enemies because he was a commoner who dared to climb up among his betters. He was unable to get Henry's divorce from Catherine of Aragon annulled by the Pope. He also didn't approve of Henry's relationship with Anne Boleyn. He had fled to his country estate; the one being excavated in this video. Henry ordered him to return to London, but Wolsey died on the journey.

    I copied this from Wikipedia "Hampton Court Palace is a royal palace in the borough of Richmond upon Thames, 11.7 miles (18.8 kilometres) south west and upstream of central London on the River Thames. Building of the palace began in 1515 for Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, a favourite of King Henry VIII. In 1529, as Wolsey fell from favour, the cardinal gave the palace to the King to check his disgrace. +Leopararouen You keep saying that but every time I see her handling documents without gloves it's been copies of the documents, not the actual ancient documents, like this episode, the document looked ancient on the front, but if you pay attention to the underside where it is still rolled up (where Dr. Lipscombs hand is resting on it at the edge of the table) it is modern poster paper, not ancient paper/vellum, plus you cannot roll up a document with a wax seal on it like that without the wax seal cracking and falling apart, so it is a copy of the original, not the original itself, and with so many experts on hand at least one of them would have said something to her if it was actual ancient documents she was handling. Also, why do you never say anything about the other TT members doing the same thing, like an earlier episode where she and Tony were looking at a guys family history, you commented on how she handled the document without gloves but didn't say a thing about the fact that Tony was right there handling the same document without gloves. Me thinks there may be a bit of jealousy on your part here. Maybe jealous that she gets to hang out with your crush Dr. Harding and you don't?

    • @TheRedleg69
      @TheRedleg69 6 років тому +4

      You're joking, right? Those are obviously posters. Considering the back is bright white and the seal at the bottom of the second one is flat on the paper with a blank background. Not to mention that she rolls it up and takes it out to the dig. Sounds like you are very bitter that someone can both be beautiful and intelligent.

    how could a so splendid palace disappear into thin air ?

    • @garyrobinson2409
      @garyrobinson2409 8 років тому +20

      Amazingly this is commonplace. Palaces were torn down for many reasons, but they disappear because the building materials are carted away and used in other buildings, the stone and brick would have a lot of value and so selling it was sensible. I once owned a 1620 house in East Sussex that sat on foundations of an older medieval building and those foundations contained stone and tile from Roman building located about a mile away. Our village church had lots of Roman stonework in it, so this cycle has been going on for a long time. Another place similar to this called "Nonsuch Palace" in Surrey also all but disappeared too and was demolished allegedly to pay off gambling debts ! I remember this place clearly because, as a young boy, I stupidly fell into the moat (which is empty) and broke my foot.

      It was Season 19 that Mick was commenting on mainly, which was utterly dreadful. They attempted to row back to some semblance of normality for S20. Channel4 basically ruined Time Team by moving production from London to Cardiff, and thereby losing the majority of their production staff.

    It is funny to see how pretzel-like the Time Team rhetoric has to be made to deal with a genuine, unapologetic, in-your-face Renaissance Man, Thomas Cardinal Wolsey. Preserving England from yet another protracted and hyper-expensive war with France, until resources were more favourable, a friend to some of the great humanists of the day, staggeringly rich - and using it to mark his presence also England's restored presence on the European stage. A man from lowly or modest background made good - in material terms, willing and more than able to tack with the prevailing political wind - when necessary, and - not unlike his namesake Thomas of Canterbury - he was a better friend to the king than to God, and paid the price for failure to please his temporal lord; unfortunately for him, in the eyes of posterity, he did not die the death of a martyr but that a traitor (whether deservedly so or not).

      I would think any respectable archeologists shoveling in the sun all day would deserve little spaces of their own or they would be sherkers. Squeeky clean archeologists are pikers.

    For the past month I've been watching episodes from before season 10, the energy was great with excitement, everybody is there, Victor, Mick, Stuart, Helen, etc. Then today I watch this episode from season 20 and that excitement isn't there, it's very female oriented not team oriented, and it's not hard to tell Time Teams days are numbered.

    Another episode where they dug up another man's trenches. Very convenient, but they found nothing that wasn't already documented.

      On a protected site, they are only allowed to open so much trench area. Previously opened areas do not count against their square meter area allowed and there is always a chance of finding something missed on the first dig.

    Stick to the bones Jackie. This whole episode has a tense, unhappy, spiteful uncomfortable feel to it. Example, calling out the pottery guy for just sitting there when he spent the whole series doing that. A sad end to great show.

      I agree that the sniping and bickering really degraded the program, but it had nothing to do with Jackie. It's all scripted for Tony, presumably to be funny, and Jackie's not jolly enough to smooth out his unkindnesses.

      Just change the channel, John, and stop whining about a show that others love. The rest of us keep changing with age, so why shouldn't the show?
