Time Team S20-E07 Horseshoe Hall

- Oakham Castle is the best preserved 12th-century building in Britain, but there's much more to it than meets the eye.
The walled area surrounding the castle is full of mysterious lumps and bumps crying out to be investigated.
The castle was once home to the Norman knight Walkelin de Ferrers, who fought alongside Richard the Lionheart in the Crusades. Before that, the same site was home to some of our most legendary Saxon kings and queens.
Time Team's task is to find out about the many buildings that would once have surrounded the castle, and they're particularly excited about the prospect of finding de Ferrers' long-lost private quarters.
Fascinating finds add to the big clues on the ground, but it takes the full three days of twists and turns to determine what Oakham looked like 900 years ago.
And to mark the visit, Tony casts a special giant Time Team horseshoe to add to the extraordinary collection of hundreds of shoes that have decorated the castle hall for 500 years.
The lovely part about being half-way through Season 20 is that I get to go back and start all over again. I think I've watched the entire series and all the specials at least four times. And each time I watch, I learn something new. I'll be finished this time by Christmas (2021). the new year is coming, and so is Season 1. Here we go again. I know I've said this in the past, but my deepest thanks to Reijer Zaaijer for his dedication to the original Time Team seasons.
Said this before and I'll say it again, Never underestimate Stewart and his knowledge of a landscape! Phil is the Man! I love The Time Team! R.I.P. Mic you are missed dearly! 😔
Stewart was one of the most impressive members of the team. His skill set is unique: seeing in both 2D and 3D and the ability to put many small visual cues together into a coherent whole. Episode 3 of season 13 gives some of his background and explains his rather charming quirk of waving his hands so broadly (child of a weaver, and weavers communicated with large gestures due to factory noise).
His job is *literally* wandering about looking at scenery.... that is so badass!
@@tehboneheadwell at it's core yeah. But the level of detail you go into by the time you've reached a doctorate is dizzying. I got to audit one of Stewarts intro classes and even at the intro level it's a wild deep dive into how to soak up history clues from ones surroundings. I'll never look at a field the same again that's for sure
I’m so glad series 20 recovered somewhat after the madness of series 19!
OK, I admit it, I'm addicted to Time Team! There are worse things to be addicted to! And, it's the best reason to have a pint afterwards (or during). Cheers!
Stewart is absolutly awesome. Right from the start I've always been amazed at the stuff he can figure out from lumps and bumps. In my opinion he is one of the most intelligent people on the Time Team team. Why Channel 4 decided to cut him from the 2nd to last series astounds me for its stupidity.
TV producers have never been renowned for their sound judgement.
Stewart took a lot of abuse, but he is thinking like a true archeologist
+Murray Duncan you are correct as to Stewart. remember the best are rarely the media winners the term is the ''suckups' win. Stewart is the Best.
Murray Duncan like you said they got rid of him was a mistake and now they've replaced him with that twat Alex Langlands & Mary Anne wot ever. Shame on you TT.
@@ExUSSailor But Producers are notoriously CHEAP. It all gets down to cost and hoe little someone is willing to work for.
It's sad to see the episodes without Mick.
He was only 66. Very sad
But he would be sad to find it ended after he passed.
I love the digger, he just keeps his cool and keeps digging and nothing seems to upset his composure.
All hail the great Ian!
Could never understand why channel 4 cut time team it was the best show on tv. I have watch every episode so many times it is unreal oh what i would give for a whole new season but no chance of that .All tv channels want to make these days are soap operas so sad . I now have to watch replays on my computer and rarely watch tv because of the soap operas
Well...Mick died..
Their excuse as ratings and Mick died as well, then they decided to axe it. I am not sure what order that was. Look around the net for the information, it's out there. The nearest is the channel on here Dig Ventures. I found it from a comment someone left on an earlier episode.
...so apparently the ratings had takena dip so they called in whats-her-face and whats-his-face to, in their eyes, bring new life to the show. Well, that just pissed every off including Mick who ultimately left the show and whats-her-face got so frustrated she left and then the axe came down... good times, but, it is here for use for eternity so enjoy! and yes, DigVentures is a very cool crowd-funded venture with TT favourite Raksha Dave at the helm. They have had some very cool speakers on line including Tony, Phil and Helen... check it out!

Mick Aston quit time team around Season 17.
That is an easy answer. Time Team was all white.
Britain was occupied and advanced its civilization with Europeans.
Axe the show.
Bravo to Stewart Anisworth what a gent
Phil and Stewart are very good at what they do. Phil stiks his nose to the ground and it speaks to him, Stewart scans the surroundings and they speak to him.while our ancestry swims in our cells and remembers all.
And Phil's been DNA tested as directly descended from the mother line of Celts back twenty thousand years or so. Everyone off Phil's land hehe
Brilliant Stewart strikes again!
I have only just discovered this treasure trove and I'm in heaven!
Thank you!
I have loved to see Ian go from digger operator to archaeologist over the years.
Ian Barclay is a master JCB operator. One reason he distinguishes himself is when he feels through his handles the change of soil density or presence hard objects. Ian the Younger is good but he's got a few years to go.
Thanks so much for posting
Man wish I knew about this channel 9 years ago. Finding lots of episodes I've never seen. Thanks!
I adore that Matt's shirt indicates he likes the Kingdom of Loathing. I love that game.
At about 35:10 Matt is wearing a Kingdom of Loathing t-shirt. My life is fulfilled, we can move on.
Thankyou for spending the years for this gal of Welsh desent. Its my go to comfort ahow like scotch cookies or fig newtons.Thankyou so much.
I wish I could meet Tony, Phil and Helen. Tony now, 20 seasons later, seems like a good friend.
I agree. I am a professional archaeologist and I would love to have a pint with Mic (RIP), Phil, and Helen to talk about the difference in UK and US archaeology.
What I’d give to hang out with these guys at the pub and raise a pint to Mick!
Unfortunately, Helen has succumbed to the GangGreen cult.
I love this show we don't have nothing like this in the states Phil is my favorite
I watch you regularly. You are one of the best on the net. I have not had TV in 20 years there was nothing worth the price.
Horshoe Hall was Excellent episode.
This episode had far better research into the de Ferrers family than the Groby Hall episode (which barely even mentioned them, focusing instead on the Greys, who didn't even live there during the time period of the unearthed archaeology). Oakham Manor looks very similar to the buildable manor houses in the Skyrim video game.
I would love to live somewhere where there is so much history right under your feet. I live in one of the oldest settled parts of the US, and "ancient" around here means late 17th Century.
Having history under your feet can be dangerous, where I live there are about 10 to 20 finds a year related to unexploded ordonance from the first and second world war. Sometimes resulting in a blown up farmer. As well as some more ancient archeology pre-dating the romans and a ton of medival stuff in buildings still standing and used.

Nebraska is great! Mounds mean indian burials. 1000s of years old.
The native Americans were there for so many years prior to the arrival of us Europeans. They must have left some reminders of their lives you just need to look harder!
I'm guessing Anon lives in Florida, because Florida is where the Spanish settled before the other Europeans moved in...
I love Matt’s tee shirt.
10:41 Phill Harding without his infamous😅 hat on, looks like Stephen Fry portraying the "Master of Laketown" in the (2013) second installment of 'The 'Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug'✌🏻😁.

@Varil3 thanks your right i made a mistake
Don't understand why all the horseshoes go against all things I have learned all my life about proper way to display them. You are supposed to display them with the open end pointing upward to hold the good luck. Turning them as these are displayed allows the good luck to drain out. In an area where the shamrock is believed to bring good luck, it surprises me that they do not follow the good luck of the horseshoe. Could explain Sir Tony... lol. Love Time Team! Am glad they have returned and brought in Gus instead of Tony. Stewart is exemplary when it comes to finding the hidden things by just taking in the entire sites they are examining. The medicinal spoon is interesting. Yesterday it was used to meter out medicine, but today it is more for snorting cocaine. Wonder if they used in King Richards time any of the drugs we find in use today to snort?
Lucky rituals change through time I guess.
Like how the black cat was once lucky 😊
Walkelin Seigneur de Ferrières, 26th great-grandfather
Stewart definitely knows what he's doing.
12 minutes in and still no mention of Rutland's most famous sons, The Rutles.
If they fail to mention them I'll be pissed (in the American sense) enough to get pissed (in the British sense).

I was always told a horseshoe should be with ends facing up, to keep the luck.
The Scot's know the truth. The devil thew a shoe. (2 pieces like an oxen shoe) He woke a Smith to fix it. The Smith recognized him and nailed the shoe into the quick of his hoof to force a promise. In pain , the devil swore to never enter a dwelling marked by the Sign of the Smith (horseshoe). That's why it doesn't matter if the shoe up or down. The Irish added the part about up so the luck won't spill out.
Horseshoe upwards saves luck for the household, Horseshoe down bestows luck on whoever passes under it.
if it's stuck in the shoe, it's for no one. let it out so you can use it. who says it has to be limited as to how much it can hold? never use the fine china until we die, is that it?
@@phoule76 china at least is real. horseshoe's luck isn't. It's just about what the mýth says is right.
Wow Queen Edith's Saxon Ball Point pen.
I like Stewart as well. He's got a great eye for details. If I had to have something analyzed, I'd hire Stewart to do it. Not happy with that weird girl or the guy that supposedly replaced Stewart. I have it when some station gets a good show and then they mess with it. It usually ruins the show.
agree with you there it was the beginning of the end .They did not last long for the show finished after the next season
the problem with these analyses, is that it's just as likely that the show was already on its last legs, and the changes simply failed to save it.
The symptoms are the same: unpopular changes and cancellation. And people lóve to have something to blame for it.
In these introductions, I keep waiting for Tony to drive over a child chasing a football into the street. Or did they send someone out to clear the road so Tony could turn backwards while driving.
Do you drive in America it's in our driving test for a license 😊
The London Eye is also a product of the de Ferriers family as a descendant, George Washington Ferris, Jr., is credited with inventing the Ferris Wheel for the 1893 Worlds Columbian Expo in Chicago.
I grew up in chicago, I'm one degree of separation from the family line of a battle of Hastings veteran. Neat feeling
What I find rather interesting is that the ridge of the roofs of both the church in the outer enclosure and the hall inside the inner enclosure are in perfect alignment. Hardly a coincidence obviously but that shows the Normans meant to build both building in line with each other for a reason. The church was build in the 13th century which is about the same time the castle hall was build...
East West because jesus
Same as cathedrals
Poor Tony ... 20 years of being frustrated 🙂
All in a man's life😊
I find this so much harder to enjoy after Mick Ashton left
Who????
Mick Aston.
And yes, he's truly missed. :(
I wonder if I put car tires on my wall it would be interesing in time,,,,lol, nice video
Local to where I live there is a car parts place that has old tyres hanging on the exterior walls, used as planters!

Now that the end is near, I’m starting to get the shakes! I’ve tried to find the entire series on DVD or even iTunes. No luck. Just a few of the latter seasons seem to be available, and some compilation discs. If anyone knows how to get the entire series I would love if you can share! 🦴⛏💕

The curvered wall looks almost like a horseshoe to me
Would like to have a t-shirt like Matt has.
Probably a problem selling this all over the world 🤣😂🤣
In the States (some states) we have what's called "Miss Utility." Under law you have to call them and let them know what, where, and when you plan to dig, and they coordinate all the relevant utilities who come out and mark all the lines. It's free - paid for by owner-member utility companies. I'm surprised the UK doesn't seem to have something similar.
We have something similar in Washington State called "Call 811 Before You Dig." We don't have a clever name like "Miss Utility."(I like that.) Having some guy come out for a half-hour is cheaper than sending a crew out for several days doing repair work.
Not got the money or coordination for such things. As there are so many different utility companies it would be tricky to organise them and who on Earth would pay for it all? Utilities tend to be mapped for future work if they're modern. Some are very old though so can be a problem.
+Rick aka Shock Shockey Yup. In Maine it's called "Dig Safe".
I've noticed that often on TT, But on this episode they did show the team doing the utility search with their own equipment. Perhaps they are given free-rein for the show?
Rick aka Shock Shockey We have the 811 system as well in New Mexico. It’s also free and it’s the law! If you decide that you’re going to dig anyway without calling 811 you can and will be heavily fined if you hit a utility line Now if they have come out and marked everything and you hit something they missed then you won’t have any (legal) issues!
Manky : "1950s: probably from obsolete mank 'mutilated, defective', from Old French manque, from Latin mancus 'maimed'. This word meaning 'inferior, worthless, off-colour' is probably from obsolete mank 'mutilated, defective', from Old French manque 'lack', from Latin mancus 'maimed'."
Bambi Raptor -- very interesting - thanks for adding that.
The surname 'Ferrer' is associated with the site quite a lot. But _NOT_ really related to 'Farrier' as an occupational name mentioned in this episode. "... De Ferrier" and ... De Ferriere" are actually Spanish occupational names (Rather than originating in France) but are actually Catalan for 'Iron Workers' of some description. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrer_(surname)
Thank you for this! I’m a descendent of the Ferrer’s who were among Virginia’s earliest settlers. I’d love to know more about them if anyone has resources to share. Many early colonists were descendants of aristocratic families.
I always wondered haw many trenches they backfilled and how many they actually left.. or did they back fill them all.

Another listing for my Anglo-American dictionary! 🤣
That first "horseshoe " they found .. I was always told that was a mule shoe, I also have been told that if you hang a horseshoe upside down all of the luck will run out .. guess theirs did eventually huh?
Some traditions hold that the horse-shoe must be 'up' so the luck doesn't run out, others maintain that it should be 'down' so that the luck pours onto you, but the oldest belief is that the position is immaterial - it is the iron crafted by a smith which gives protection against those beings to which iron is anathema.
Robert MacDonald, Bespoke Kiltmaker Cool I didnt know that Robert thanks for the info
yeah, and on the surface I don't believe any of it, but you'll notice that I didn't name them....
On Google Maps photo sphere by the door on the floor you can still see is the time team horseshoe next to the great railway journeys horse show
22:00 - either thats agent smith or some kind of smudge
I wás wondering about medieval sunglasses...
The cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiores in Florence is not really a true gothic cathedral. It was begun in the late gothic period, but continued into the early renaissance where it was significantly modified and completed with an octagonal dome by Brunelleschi. There are no traditional flying buttresses as in other gothic cathedrals, nor were the decorations gothic. There is, however, an elaborate 19th century Italian gothic revival façade by Emilio de Fabris.
This also proves that Raybans were also worn in the medieval period, see 22.07, medieval picture of Edith, the figure standing to the right of her!

Stewart saved your bacon.
He does that a lot, lol!
should he be driving like that? I got scared within the first ten seconds. I ride a bike and when he drives without looking at the road, how many other "car drivers" do it?
I was thinking the same thing, but It's probable that the space was cleared for filming the scene. When he's out on roads at regular times, he does a lot less turning around to talk to us.

Neil is so strange to observe
And again - Indiana Ainsworth comes through! Phil, with mutton chops, Nosferatu fingernails + baldness looking like a zombie walker.
I think you'll find that Phil has those fingernails for guitar picking.
Yes, you will notice that only the nails on one hand are long. Guitar.
still gross...
Winchester, you're an idiot. Is this all you have to contribute?
Why are you so angry?
I prefer Francis to Niel. But at least there no Ochota or Lipscomb.
Granskare, you are wrong. If you check the history of horseshoes and the symbolism you will be surprised to find that many people think the horseshoe should be hung upside down so that any luck it released would be spread to those around it.
Horseshoe is always hung right side up to preserve the good luck.
Marnie Sweet My grandfather taught me how to ride and he trained many types of horses, including Hackney horses and thoroughbreds. In future, please do some research, before replying. The horseshoes he had, some from very famous horses, were usually hung either upside down or sometimes on an angle. If you check photographs of horses that won major races such as the Derby, The Oaks, Kentucky Derby, you will note that a horseshoe shaped garland is hung around the neck of the winner and it is upside down.
There are many stories and tales attached to the hanging of horseshoes. Here are two of them. The first quotation is from Wikipedia. When kept as a talisman, a horseshoe is said to bring good luck. Some believe that to hang it with the ends pointing upwards is good luck as it acts as a storage container of sorts for any good luck that happens to be floating by, whereas to hang it with the ends pointing down, is bad luck as all the good luck will fall out. Others believe that the horseshoe should be hung the other way (with the ends pointing down), as it will then release its luck to the people around it.
Nailing a horseshoe to the threshold of one's home helps to bring good fortune to the family. The horseshoe, tacked in place with three nails and the open end down, wards off evil.
nuf sed. no need for more.
Leopararouen wrong. Pointing down goes back centuries. Either way, it's all nonsense.
What the hell is happening to Neil at 8:14?
Reacting to Phil's yell about the cable, lol.
they always say did Edward and Edith not have kids cuz he was so pious or were theh just unlucky. thay annoys me people always forget women . Maybe knowing if she doesn't have a kid, her brother aka her family aka dynasties the most important thing, the most powerful by far. would become the ruling dynasty . women can scheme too ya kno. everyone was
They have all the horseshoes WRONG! They're upside down and all the good luck is running out!
In USA we hang them that way for luck. I had one over the barn door.
the original idea was that iron wards off evil, later on it changed to bringing luck
What is the difference between a Texas prisoner and an archaeologist? Answer: NONE, they both break rocks for a living!

I love Time Team but editing, sound effects and music in S20 are infuriating.
its funny that phil needs a haircut and know one mentions it..hehe
Hopefully people are learning to mind there own business where it concerns Phil’s hair.
He’s waiting for the go-ahead from DavidCrosby. 😂
They really butchered this show.
This last season (and a few before it) is full of added drama, made up conflicts, people behaving like teenagers.
It used to be about professionals from different disciplines working together with mutual respect to solve an archeological riddle. Showing that teamwork and different people becomes something greater than the sum of it's parts. And it ended up like some crappy History Channel show.
RIP Mick.
Aside from the music, it seems ok to me. The humour is the same. I think they were under pressure to tweak things. The one thing I noticed is Tony is mentioning peoples names which he only started doing it again in this series. I think it was their attempt to gain a fresh audience.
Time Team's ratings were on a (ever so) slow decline almost since the first season. At sóme point some exec is going to demand change or cancelation.
Trying for the teen audience just by pasting in some nicer graphics here and there, seems quite desperate. Most teens just aren't going to be interested in this style of archeology, so unless you're digging up a dinosaur or completely intact castle, you might as well accept that.
exodus my ass.
the style of this season (and 19 a bit as well) is so obnoxious ... I know they were trying to "modernize" to get their ratings back ... but now looking back its really odd ... it doesnt feel like Time Team really
As a zzz. Zzz
after19 series they should have learnt how to keep music and drums lower than speaking voices
I am finding more and more A lot of them are a bunch of close minded whiners and it shows in a lot of these segments
These shows, however flawed, are heads and shoulders above American TV. Brits got time team, Americans got stuck with Snookie.
Red Corvin, that's it ? Your contribution is whining, whingeing, idiotic and the work of of an empty headed clown. Please go somewhere else on the Internet and bore someone else with your juvenile observations.
Phil should give up on his hair and shave his head; would look soooo much better, he is bald on top!
You also noticed that bald pate! I was wondering if anyone else wondered why he didn't wear his trademark hat on day one! (If you look at ALL Phil's photos on-line, you'll see he's had that same hairstyle FOREVER! And it's still UGH!)
His fingernails are downplaying classical guitar without a pick
Phil prefers to wear his hair long and that is his choice, not yours. Shut up and leave the man alone. Time Team was not intended to be a fashion show,
