In December 2021, the Delhi government enlisted six manufacturers of electric kits authorized by the International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT) to transform outdated petrol and diesel vehicles into electric ones, ensuring compliance with city road regulations.
Among these selected manufacturers is Zero 21 Renewable Energy Solutions, a Hyderabad-based startup that has introduced the ReNEW Conversion Kit. This innovative e-kit facilitates the seamless transition to electric power for both diesel and CNG-powered three-wheelers. Founded by Rani Srinivas in late 2017, the startup aims to harness emerging technologies and skilled expertise to provide a diverse range of battery-powered three-wheelers.
Returning to India:
Hailing from Hyderabad, the 49-year-old Srinivas boasts almost 26 years of corporate experience spanning 20 countries. His background involves extensive involvement in business process optimization and enterprise resource planning (ERP) implementation projects in diverse locations such as the Suez Canal and Salalah Port.
Having settled in the United States in 2014, Srinivas worked for Tesla Motors as an IT manager, overseeing software aspects of production and coordinating with the shop floor and production planning. His tenure at Tesla equipped him with insights into material procurement, production processes, and supply chain management.
After nearly three and a half years at Tesla, I desired to return to India and contribute to the electrification of the three-wheeler segment to address air and noise pollution. Tesla's outstanding technology, simple yet differentiating, emphasized the importance of easy-to-maintain processes and technology to reduce air and sound pollution in vehicles, explains Srinivas.
According to a Statista survey, "about 70 percent of urban dwellers across India travel less than 10 km for work and education."
Considering the prevalence of three-wheelers in facilitating such commutes and their economic efficiency, it became evident to me that EV technology, popularized by companies like Tesla, was urgently needed here, adds Srinivas.
By the end of 2017, Srinivas returned to India and established Zero 21 Renewable Energy Solutions, where "Zero 21" signifies 'Zero air and sound pollution in the 21st century.' In early 2018, the startup initiated the development of its first product, the Smart Mule.
This commercial transport vehicle, capable of lasting up to 10 years, can carry loads of 350-400 kg. The Smart Mule, powered by a 130 (160) Ah lithium ferrous phosphate (LFP) battery, offers a range of 120-130 km on a single charge, with a peak power of 2000W and a top speed of 30 mph. Our clientele includes companies involved in the last-mile delivery of various goods, and we have also introduced Smart Mule passenger vehicles providing last-mile connectivity for commuters in Hyderabad. Regardless of road conditions, they offer a stable ride. Our upcoming model, the Smart Mule X, nearing completion, has a 1-tonne payload capacity and will obtain certification within two to three months," details Srinivas.
Conversion Kit:
With the ongoing electric vehicle revolution in India, the fate of existing internal combustion engine (IC-engine) vehicles has become a crucial consideration. Retrofitting electric vehicles emerges as a pivotal topic.
"By introducing new vehicles, we risk exacerbating traffic congestion. The only viable solution for existing IC-engine or CNG-powered vehicles is conversion. The Delhi government needs to prioritize converting old vehicles into EVs, as simply adding more vehicles to the roads will only compound our issues. With millions of auto-rickshaws in India, achieving our goal of having EV sales account for 30% of private cars, 70% for commercial vehicles, and 80% for two- and three-wheelers by 2030 necessitates converting these vehicles," emphasizes Srinivas.
