Yaesu FT-891: Digital Noise Reduction (DNR)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 6 жов 2024
- In this video I showcase the digital noise reduction feature in the Yaesu FT-891. This little radio is quite capable. And, priced at $600 +/-, it is possibly the greatest value in Amateur Radio today. I hope you find this video helpful and informative.

Thank you so much for posting this video. I'm a fairly new ham and bought an Icom 718 but had so much noise in my home office I packed it up and bought the FT-891 thinking I could take in the back yard or the local park as a portable radio. using these tips I managed to get clear crisp reception IN MY OFFICE. You have a new subscriber 🙂
Glad I could help, Dave! There is more to these radios than the manuals truly reveal. The more I use them, the more I find them more capable than I first thought. And I consider myself a savvy purchaser. As one viewer put it, “a Yaesu is a thinking man’s radio.” There is a bit of a learning curve, but it pays dividends.
I’m still amazed at the capabilities of the FT-891. I mean, it cost approximately half the price of a good ham radio in 1959. $1200 back then. Adjusted for inflation, that’s over $12,000 today. Those hams in 1959 must have really loved amateur radio to pay the equivalent of $12,000 for a radio.

Thank you so much for this video, i just purchased an FT 891 and haven't downloaded the manual yet. More like this please.
I’m glad you liked it. There are 62 more videos in the FT-891 playlist.
Fantastic video! I just picked up the FT-891 over the weekend after passing my General. What a difference the IPO, ATT and DNR make. Thank you! 73 de KT1RUN.
Do you have a link for the rails? Any other must have accessories for the FT-891? I'm looking to do some SOTA and capture the experiences on my UA-cam channel. Thanks in advance.
Welcome to my channel. The rails are from Portable Zero. There are two colors available.
I invite you to join me on MeWe in the Ham / Amateur Elmers Group. There is also a SOTA (Summits On The Air) group, for those interested in hiking with ham radio.

@@n4hnhradio Thanks for the info on Portable Zero. It's a blessing and a curse. It looks like I now need to buy the Escort for both my FT-891 and FT-818. Their Sherpa back is also very intriguing. I keep telling my wife that I'm finally done buying equipment and gear for this hobby for this year, but there never seems to be the case. Also, I have note to look you on MeWe. Thanks for the help again.
Thank you!!! My experience with ft891 is so much better now
I’m so glad you found the video helpful.

I will definitely try your suggestions!
I may have days/nights with a lovely S1/S2 noise floor. Generally speaking, i can try to do any work and have S9 to +10 and maybe +20 on my FY-891. Very annoying - means i have hours or days where I cannot work - all I hear is hash.
All I know is the QRM in this mountain community which should be very quiet is like a stadium band rock concert where your hearing is ruined for life. Other times, it is complete quiet
Thank you for this presentation!
DNR doesn’t do much for QRM. It is mainly effective against natural noise (QRN). The noise you describe could be from digital sources, devices with your home or power line noise. Operate your radio with a battery and turn off all circuit breakers in your home. Noise gone? It’s coming from within your home. Could be LED lights, wall-wart power supply, laptop power brick, plasma TV, food sealer, wireless phone charger, and more.
A Noise Blanker can help with power line noise, until the power line noise reaches an excessive level. The NB degrades receiver selectivity so only use until you can find and solve the source of the noise.
I recommend watching the videos in my Power Line Noise playlist and my HF Noise Interference playlist.
Thanks! I ordered one of those yesterday.
Congratulations!
Thx for showing me how to better use the DNR on my FT-891!

You’re very welcome Jeff! The FT-891 is a great radio.

Tnx, you´re the best,73.
You’re very welcome! I’m glad you found the video helpful. The DNR in the FT-891 is quite good, once you get to algorithm 9.

Good vid and good information.
Glad you liked it.
This...this function with dnr is why I spent $675.00 ...
Just heard you on 7.150 mentioning this radio and the UA-cam channel :) 73!
So what are the handles on the side of the rig for? I just go my 891 and see them all the time. Thanks for the Video, good information.
I carry that FT-891 in a backpack. The handles protect the knobs and the rear connectors. The handles are from Portable Zero.
I use the FT891 with a manpack. I really enjoy that DSP, better than my IC 7300.
It’s hard to believe that we can get this level of performance from a $600 radio. 73, Doug
I agree. I got the FT-891 about 2 months ago for POTA, and DNR really pulls out the weak ones out of the noise on the FT-891. My ICOM 7300 sits in the shack and it's nowhere as good.
@@BikingHikingRadio Now if Yaesu would put a color waterfall display on the FT891 like my Xiegu G90, it would be the perfect radio.
@@forgetyourlife Real world, I measure only 1amp on receive.
I only measure 1-Amp on receive. 1.1-Amps with volume high.

Did they ever fix the NB in this from distorting?
Sadly no. I doubt they can. That is an inherent issue with DSP-based noise blankers. It’s tolerable though. It mostly affects strong signals. I usually run IPO, ATT, and RF Gain set at 5 S-units when working a strong station. And I run IPO anyway on 40m and below.
73, de N4HNH
@@n4hnhradio thanks Doug. I find in the mobile setting NB to 0 is enough to knock out the car noise etc and not be as distorted, but even my ftdx101 will distort with a strong signal , like you said I think it’s the nature of the best.
Yes, the FTdx10 NB will distort too, if set much above 5. I’m glad the FTdx5000MP has an analog NB and a DSP-based NB. The analog NB works great. The DSP NB works better in the 5000 than most, but I have to be careful not to set it too aggressive. There are times when the DSP NB can help though.
I did the firmware update for my FT-891. The update was supposed to improve the DSP. If there was an improvement, it sure was subtle.

I got a ft857d mobile with a atas120A antenna, I run 10 meters a good bit, 2 meters quite a bit and can't wait for 6 to open, do you happen to have any helpful advice on audio on that rig?
Nice setup. I hear many good reports about the ATAS. I don’t have a 857D to test, but I’m pretty sure that the settings I show for the FT-891 will get you close. Yaesu has been using the same parametric EQ approach for many of their transceivers for quite some time now.
73, de N4HNH
@@n4hnhradio i enjoy your videos, got the ft857d mobile, ft991A, ftdx10 and I want to adjust some settings on them by your videos
You will want to follow the settings for the FT-891 hand mic. Then tweak for your voice. My settings are for my voice but, they get most operators close enough to fine adjust for their voice.
73, de N4HNH
@@n4hnhradio will do, I gotta get my ole truck has my ft857d in it back on the road, it's down at the time, once I get it running again im.gonna play with it more, hope to make contact with you on 10 or 6 someday
Hopefully we can make contact.

Can you get a 250 Hz CW filter for this radio?
Not for the FT-891. It only has only two roofing filter slots, one 3,000 Hz, for SSB and CW, and one 15,000 Hz, for AM, FM, etc. The DSP handles the rest. Don’t worry though. The DSP is extremely good at CW filtering. Using a combination of IPO, ATT, DNR, Width, APF, and/or RF gain, I can make my FT-891 sound like I’m listening to a code practice oscillator. I think I showed it in two or three videos on the channel, in the FT-891 playlist.
73, de N4HNH
@@n4hnhradio That is great. I have one on order. I can't wait to do CW with it. Thanks for the great video's I would like to do a one time patreon at this time.
Larry, the FT-891 is a triple conversion superheterodyne receiver. That helps with selectivity. So the 3,000 Hz roofing filter has some assistance downstream in the receiver. Admittedly, there is a downside to triple conversion. There is an increase in phase noise. But the DSP can counteract the phase noise. You might not even notice it.
I greatly appreciate your contribution via Patreon!
73, Doug
with IF DSP, you can narrow CW all the way down to 50hz bandwidth. it’s a very nice CW rig
I just received my FT-891 a month ago and have been able to get it mobile once and used it at home twice. When I enable DNR the rig throws a ton of really unhealthy sounding static. Experience anything like that? My SWR has always been < 1.7 when used and have been on both 20M and 40M with the same results on this rig.
I should include antennas....both a buddistick setup at 20M and 40M and Shark mono-band hamsticks at 20m and 40M.
If you haven’t minimized noise first with ATT, IPO, and RF Gain, the amount of noise going into the DSP unit might overwhelm the DNR. The sound it will produce can be described as a watery sound. After I minimize the noise with ATT, IPO, and RF Gain, I enable DNR and set it to algorithm number 9.
If you use the aforementioned method and you still get the unhealthy sounding static, something else is going on.
73, de N4HNH
@@n4hnhradio This was the exact cause / solution to my issue. Had not engaged either ATT or IPO. Much appreciate the information! Cheers and 73
Unfortunately, in this case, the issue persisted. Yaesu determined the unit needed to be shipped out for warranty repair. Will see how things resolve.
the DNR is great
…..too bad it shuts off every time you change bands or even VFO’s
The rig only has 8 Megabits of memory in support of the DSP. That’s also why the DNR algorithms cannot be updated to match those in the FTdx10, even though both transceivers use the same DSP chip. The FTdx10 has 64 Megabits of memory. But the DNR in the FT-891 is still better than most competitors, if you use it correctly.
@@n4hnhradio
yeah
it’s still a great POTA rig
