A classic exploit in homeworld cataclysm was to hyperspace your mothership right next to your opponents and point blank siege cannon them out of existence with a single overpowered shot!! 💥
This was called hyper sieging. I loved doing this in multiplayer.. until they patched it. Before the patch, you could INITIATE the siege shot point blank and hyperspace out while shooting it, killing the other player and also escaping.
I remember in one mod it allowed you to use the Children of the garden Kedesh’s fleet. The needle mothership could ram, not on purpose like in the campaign, but because it was longer than it was meant to be. Hyperspaced in and took both of us out. Went back to salvage corvetting in mostly vanilla. Good times.
@@negativity1564 that’s awesome. When I did it I didn’t hyperspace out my mothership survived as just a carcass but still totalled the opposition. Jumping out before being caught in the blast is genius!!
HAHAHA! Yeah! I did that tactic as well! LOADS of FUN! I still have my 2 original copies of the game, however, no computer that will run them anymore. PC companies don't even build desktops with a CD/DVD drive in them anymore! If you want one, it has to be an external item you USB into a port and set on your desk next to it! Guess I'm old school since I find that kind of offense for some reason. hahahaha!

Head's up for anyone interested in trying the old games, they're on sale for super cheap on Steam right now, other than that cataclysm one, just picked them up myself.
My favorite thing to do in the original homeworld game was taking all the enemy ships. There were unarmed ships that would dock onto enemy ships and turn them into your units. So you would just fly a few cheap fighters in first to get the enemy's guns distracted then send in a wave of capture ships after them. Every mission just became a massive gain in fleet size. You never had to send in any large gunships, so you never lost any larger ships, but you would always gain a bunch so you would just roll into the next map with increasingly ridiculously oversized armadas.
I did that especially well on Level 10 where the entire area was encircled by 128 ships and then the juicy stuff in the middle. It took me over 37 hours of straight gaming time to grab [salvage] all of those, but lack of sleep well worth the effort! My fleet going into the next map was so ridiculously large, that you lost sight of the lines of ships in formation going in BOTH directions! It was amazing! That Giant rolling asteroid had nothing on my tactics! 😁 oh man, laughing hard just remembering that now!
I loved Homeworld Cataclysm, the infecting stuff was really cool, if you were not careful they would just assimilate your big expensive ships. One of the best games in that time.
Cataclysm had the dreadnaught at end game which was just hilarious to use two shotting carriers. Basically like a titan in EVE, the whole ship is one big death cannon.
Ahh yes, a fellow recon lover. I've played so many hours of Ion Cannon recons back in Homeworld 1. (via edited game files) Fun times Set to sphere formation and aggressive tactics.. its a Glorious sight to see.
Holy cow! I remember playing Homeworld back in the 90s on a dinosaur pc that couldn’t handle the processing. Everything remind me of how old I am now. 🤣
Always open an even number of windows to watch Spiff stream, or it's not perfectly balanced. And the higher the even number, the more perfectly balanced it becomes.
Spiff will still be around when humanity takes to the stars, and he shall take up a ship, and its name shall be Majestic Sausage, and it shall be glorious.
I would absolutely love to see more Rimworld on the channel, wether it's live or video you balance the game so well! All the best wishes from me and may you have an absolutely wonderful day! Cheers!
When you were describing the tactic, I thought "zergling rush", but then when you mentioned that the recon vessels are pumped out of a carrier, so definitely "protoss carriers".
The old days of original Starcraft. Get a few carriers, maximum drone upgrades and just blanket the sky with drones. Good luck selecting my carriers through the swarm of drones. Jut have to make sure I keep mashing the build drone button...
This reminds me of an old 90s game called Maelstrom. If you rushed missile research early on, you unlock a long range missile that you can throw on small, fast ships. In a fight, you just fly to opposite corners and shoot when the enemy ships follow. You could beat any enemy fleet with half a fleet of scout ships.
So one thing i noticed is the giant ships are moving far too fast compared to hw2 or 1, they can rotate incredibly quick which really takes you out of the immersion that these ships are absolutely massive. Essentially they are lacking inertia
Well, in HW 1, C and 2 ships had "max speed". In space. So yeah, of course they were too slow back then:D Likewise the max range of guns was removed, shells now travel until they hit something or leave the map. The ships won't fire beyond certain range due to sensor ranges, but with enough ships(and targeting your own ship) you can probably cause saturate bombardment of opposing side of the map😅
@@TheArklyte Re: "shells now travel until they hit something or leave the map": I don't think they do: I noticed at least on the bigger ships their shells explode when they hit their max range whether or not they hit something. And IRL even the F-16's 20mm bullets do that (prevents collateral damage), so it's not unreasonable, and it'll keep the frame rate from tanking. If every bullet had to be accounted for, for the entire map, it would get stupid resource intensive very, very, quickly: imagine a fleet of assault frigates firing bullets every which way! No, they'll solve that with exploding shells I'm sure of it.
Devs "hey, we're going to release a release copy. We'll get to showcase all of the different units, all their interactions, their strengths, weaknesses. The audience will really get a good idea of the different types of space battles we can have!!" Spiff " Scouts go Brrrrr"
Should use WW2 carrier fleet as inspiration for balance. 1) fighters class with focus on speed and large sensor, but hindered by limited fuel. 2) capital class with focus on being bullet sponge and game-changing abilities (like weapon beyond visual range, eg: Siege cannon, or ambush abilities, ie: cloaking ion array frigate), but hindered by small sensor. 3) corvette class that focus on support ability for capitals, eg; resource collection, or capture, or interact with environment. That way capitals rely on fighter for sensor, and fighter rely on capital for fuel, and capital rely on corvette for resource (RUs), and corvette rely on fighters for defense.
Most of these have all either have been done or they are being implemented to some degree. The fuel thing was a concept in the original HW1 and it was annoying. Cataclysm late-game had the “mothership” equipped with a siege cannon, and that was fun but a bit OP Cloaking is just a thing you could get with various methods in both original Homeworlds. Also, the blind ion sniper is an artifact path you can take in war games.
Also, that game between 1&2 had manual ship control. I loved that game more than 1 or 2. I hope this one adds in all the cool shit they tried in that sad in between game
Special Request to HW3 Devs: Those Torpedo Frigates should have some type of distant engagement. Meaning, instead of getting close to the enemy targets, those Torpedo Frigates should keep a safe distance and fire missiles instead of engaging enemy to where they are located. At the same time, have a reverse gear mechanism on incoming enemy ships while firing. That should define the nature of their functions. As far as corvettes, It would be great to have 4 or 5 different types of corvettes e.g., flack corvettes, double barrel gatling gun corvettes for anti fighter roles, gatling rail gun corvettes for anti frigate or anti corvette roles, or defense field corvette similar to HW1's Taidaan defense corvettes that shoots out multiple lasers on incoming projectiles.
I remember playing the scrim mode on the one between 1&2 an found that recon ships with the big sphere formation was op. They encircle any capital ship and continue to strafe while shooting non stop. Killed anything
